Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Hiya Ed,

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Sophie.

You're also welcome to get in touch with the Head of Classics at Clifton College, Mr Huntington, who employed me at the school between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
To introduce myself I am married with two children, a son working in Brussels and a daughter at secondary school. There must be history in the blood in our family as I have a Cambridge history degree, my wife a history degree from Warwick and our son studied history at King's College London!
I remain fascinated by history and always remember the opening lines of J. P Hartley are The Go-Between (some of you may have seen Julie Christie in the film?) "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there". Recent events underline the importance of our past and understanding how we came to be where we are.

Holidays for me often include visits to historic places. In the last few years, for example we have seen the Vatican, Knossos, Granada and the historic places in New England -Boston, Salem and the Plymouth Plantation. My favourite holiday country is France - because of the food!

Teaching Experience:

Since September 2007 I have been involved in distance learning tutoring Key Stage 3GSCE and AS/A2 history for an open learning organisation. I was pleased though it was mostly due to the students that three obtained A*s and three A in the first IGCSE history examination in summer 2011.This work has included the regular marking of students' essays and other work and support and guidance leading to examinations.

Individual tutorial support has been or students retaking examinations, mostly AS and A2 on all three examining boards and I have generally made a positive difference to their results. I do not claim to be able to cover all areas of history but my range is wide. At AS/A2 I can support students covering English history topics from the Tudors to the post Second World war period, Imperial Russia from the Emancipation of the serfs until the 1917 Revolutions and the Soviet Union from 1917 until its ending in 1991. I am also confident in topics in German history from unification in 1870 down to reunification in 1989. Similarly I can cover many topics in French history starting with the revolution in 1789. In terms of international history I am familiar with the key themes from circa 1870 through to the end of the Cold War, including the Vietnam War. I can also cover most themes in American history from the Civil War until the post-war era.
At GCSE and Key Stage 3 I can cover most topics and more recently I have also been teaching a school age pupil with autism. I have an up to date CRB

Relevant Previous Experience

lecturing on modern history (C18 to C21) on both first degree and MA courses.
lecturing on a wide range of further education courses
substantial examining and assessment experience, including first degree and MA level
research in higher and further education

HMI 1989-1993 and Further Education Inspector 1993-2001 responsible for the inspection of humanities including history in higher education, further education colleges and schools, both curriculum areas and cross college.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to students is to combine high expectations with a willingness at all times to help and advance their understanding, self confidence and self esteem and encourage them to work with increasing independence. When appropriate I work out with them a study programme with clear goals.

Many of the distance learning students I have taught have been home based because they have withdrawn from school due to bullying and some are living outside the UK. So I have good experince in working with those who, for whatever reason, have found learning difficult

My work in supporting students who are resitting examinationsbgeins with a, careful review of their performance. I , check the past examination papers and the examiners' guidance from the exmanination websites so as to discover why a student's performance has fallen short of expectations and plan a programme to achieve better in a reset.

However tutors are not miracle workers. I would stress that the students cannot expect me as tutor to do everything for them but rather they also have to make a major contribution in order to achieve success.

Personal Description:
Currently I am working as a Chemistry teacher in a sixth form college. I have been tutoring professionally for the last five years but, in a way, I started this job as a hobby when I was in school - meeting friends after school to help them with their revision.

I have a PhD in Biochemistry (Distinction) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Distinction). My hobbies are varied, but I would mention football and chess.

Teaching Experience:

I teach a wide range of students: students with special needs, students aiming for Oxbridge, students struggling to pass, etc., tailoring my teaching to their individual needs.

My classroom teaching experience includes A Level Chemistry (Edexcel and OCR), GCSE Chemistry and Physics (Edexcel), and HND in Applied Chemistry Level 4 and 5 (equivalent to first and second year of a chemistry degree).

I also work as a Chemistry A Level examiner, which enables me to guide students on how to maximise their performance in exams.

As a private tutor, I have been helping students doing A level Chemistry (all exam boards), IGCSE Chemistry (Edexcel) and GCSE Chemistry (all boards). So far I can say that the feedback from my students has always been excellent.

I have also worked as a teaching assistant in a secondary school in London. I supported Science and Mathematics lessons across the secondary age range, helping students with difficulties in learning.

During my PhD,I worked as a teacher for undergraduate practicals, and in a voluntary capacity with teenagers in a socially deprived area. All these experiences have been highly rewarding.

Tutoring Approach:

In the first lesson I show original documentation for identity, proof of qualifications and DBS (previously known as CRB) to my students and their parents.

I offer the first lesson as a free no obligation lesson, which is only charged if students decide to continue to have further lessons with me. Therefore if after the first lesson you are not fully satisfied and decide not to come back, then you would not have to pay for it.

My approach to teaching students consists of the following steps:
-To establish a good atmosphere between the student and myself.
-To identify the student's current level and the difficulties they are experiencing in the topic we are going to start working on.
-To define the learning objectives for the session so that students have a clear idea of what they need to learn.
-To keep a continuous interaction with the student during the whole lesson though questioning and different activities in order to keep the student engaged whilst I can check if learning is taking place.
-To evaluate the session in terms of what the student has mastered and what needs further work.
-To set homework so that the student consolidates the acquisition of new concepts and skills.

Personal Description:
I am a Native Spanish tutor (from Galicia, North-West of Spain) and this is my second year working as a freelance tutor in London, where I am also studying for my PhD (Comparative Literature). I enjoy films, football and music and I would be glad to use these topics in class if you share any of these interests.

Teaching Experience:

I have had experiences teaching at almost any level, from nursery toddlers to 73 years old ladies. I have worked with small groups at the University of Liverpool as a Native Spanish Speaking Tutor (2008-2009) and as an English teacher with big classrooms of up to 30 students at a secondary education school in Spain (2009-2010). In London I am working a lot with adult learners who have an interest in learning, improving or keeping fluent in Spanish for conversation, holidays or even looking forward to moving to Spanish-speaking countries. I have also been successful helping a couple of A-Level students get their best results. At the moment I am working part time as a Spanish teaching assistant at brentsido Highschool, on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, providing conversation practice sessions and A Lavel training to small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe I am absolutely flexible and I always try to provide the best strategy for getting the best results. Every student is a different world. For adult learners, which is probably the sector I am most often working with, I usually draw conclusions from a first class where a bit of every skill is tried and interests and objectives are discussed. For absolute beginners who want to build solid foundations, I recommend using a textbook (or handouts I prepare) with some other extra activities I provide. For advanced learners I usually bring real-life texts (from newspapers, ads, literature, etc) and in class we discuss both grammar aspects (with a selection of exercises) and whatever topics are brought up by the texts, in conversation. I am also open to specific outlines the student may want to follow.

Personal Description:
I'm a 25 year old Mathematics graduate from Bristol University. I spent my 3rd year abroad, studying maths on a French island off the east coast of Africa, and becoming fluent in French.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching all abilities and ages, and a good track record of results, with pupils always attaining or surpassing their targets.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths
In sessions I generally stick quite closely to the course, revisiting the school lessons and homework to target weak areas, whilst also working on a more thorough general understanding. When possible I let the tutee lead the session, so that they get the help they actually need, usually asking a few quick questions on any material skipped over to check for problems, but my teaching methods vary to suit my tutees.

French
I teach fairly independently of the school topics, revising grammar where necessary, as it is good grammar which makes everything else possible, but concentrating on speaking French as much as possible during the sessions, especially with A-level students, since this gives them the confidence they need to access the higher marks. I try to minimise rote learning as much as possible by working on generalisations and explaining the reason, and sometimes history, behind the otherwise random and confusing spellings and exceptions.

Personal Description:
I studied music at Hertford College, Oxford, where I sang as a choral scholar. I now work in music as a conductor, singer, pianist and teacher. I conduct the Harpenden-based Lea Singers and the Solis Ensemble, and sing with the choir of St Albans Cathedral. I am employed as an accompanist by Portland Place School, London, and regularly accompany ABRSM and school music exams.

I am able to teach piano, theory and aural skills. I teach music GCSE and A' Level, either independently or as back-up to school classes.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught piano, theory and musicianship for many years. My experience at Portland Place School has taught me various approaches to working with younger students. My current range of teaching includes children and teenage piano students, GCSE and A' level tuition for various exam boards, and adult musicianship.

I have personal experience of dealing with children with ADHD and related concentration difficulties.

Tutoring Approach:

For piano students I make it a priority to identify what music excites and inspires the student to practise. This way there is always a balance between hard work, a challenge, and enjoyment. I try to be flexible and cater to each student's tastes and needs, always with the background aim of advancing his or her technical ability and musicianship.

Tutoring is especially useful if a student is finding classroom teaching insufficient or unfulfilling. In one-to-one sessions individual problems can be identified and addressed with a more personalized approach than is possible in a classroom environment. For those who are no longer enjoying the subject, I try to reach the source of the disinterest. For those who are wanting a greater challenge than they are currently being offered, I develop exercises to push beyond the constraints of the curriculum. My emphasis is always on developing holistically as a musician.

Personal Description:
I have been teaching full time for some years preferring to work in the private tutition/coaching area because the personal satisfaction is higher.

I have a first class honours degree in chemistry from the University of Leicester, a DPhil from the University of Oxford and a PGCE [Chemistry] from Oxford.

I keep up to date with my subject through regular Continuing Professional Development activities including reading about the subject and attending seminars and courses.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Chartered Chemist and a Chartered Scientist.

Teaching Experience:

I was Head of Chemistry at Eton College [yes, the famous one!] for four years and taught part time students chemistry at the University of Northampton.

Since 1989 I have been an Associate Lecturer in chemistry with The Open University teaching part-time students by distance learning and at Summer Schools. I currently teach 2 Open University chemistry courses.

I have been coaching students in science and maths for over 30 years. Post-16 I have extensive specialist background in chemistry - for Edexcel, OCR and AQA at AS and A2, including Salters' A-level plus I have experience of the International Baccalaureate; and supporting vocational courses.

I have supported students in chemistry, biology, physics [as triple or double science, for the AQA, Edexcel and OCR syllabuses (including 21st Century science)] and maths at GCSE/IGCSE [IB or equivalent] for many years and in helping with Independent School entrance. I have also supported students studying for equivalency testing for career development.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient, friendly and successful teacher specialising in chemistry at GCSE and A-level [and university level]. In addition I have extensive experience of tutoring science and mathematics to GCSE level. My experience covers helping students of all ages [from primary to adults] and from all backgrounds. I have a good sense of humour, am used to teaching on-line and in 1:1 situations. My approach is to boost a students` confidence in a relaxed environment resulting in greater success and self -belief which results in more enjoyment - and success - in the subjects being studied. Over the years I have successfully helped over 70 students to achieve success.

In-between sessions students can contact me by email or telephone for support with exam questions or school work at no extra charge rather than waiting until the next meeting.

Currently teaching:

6 A-level chemistry students
3 GCSE science students
1 IGCSE chemistry, physics and biology student
2 GCSE maths students
1 Open University course in chemistry

Currently I have a few slots available but only during the day before 2.30pm

Personal Description:
Hi, my name's Chris and I provide a guitar tuition service in and around Worcester. I offer both acoustic and electric guitar lessons for beginner and intermediate students of all ages. I teach a variety of styles and can tailor lessons to your own musical interests so that you're not only learning the music you love, but developing other essential skills in a relevant musical context.

Teaching Experience:

I have 12 years experience playing guitar and hold a joint-honours degree in music.

Tutoring Approach:

In addition to teaching you how to play the guitar, I can offer expertise in other areas of music. Having spent three years studying music at university, and being a writer myself, I can assist you with your own compositions, arrangements and songs. Likewise I can help with the sometimes precarious art of accompanying yourself as a singer! The focus of lessons is up to you, though equally if you're unsure of exactly what you'd like to learn I can offer plenty of options. As a patient and considerate individual my lessons tend to be relaxed but highly productive.

Guitar lessons can be arranged at times to suit. I'm generally available on weekday afternoons and evenings but feel free to contact me to check my current availability. I teach at my family home in the Barbourne area of central Worcester but I am also willing to travel within Worcester and to nearby surrounding areas of Worcestershire. For this service I charge an additional fee to cover the cost of transport and travel time, this is £5 within Worcester and £10 for Droitwich and Malvern.

My rate is £15 per half hour, however longer lessons are perfectly possible. For more information, or to arrange a lesson please feel free to contact me.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic native speaker Italian teacher qualified at the Italian Cultural Institute of London with a TIAFL (Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language) certificate. Furthermore, I have attained a Master's degree (Distinction) in Italian Literature at University of Bologna gaining an excellent command of the Italian language and a deep insight into the culture.

Teaching Experience:

During the intensive teacher training course TIAFL 'Teaching Italian as a Foreign language' at the Italian Cultural Institute in London I have taught to students of different levels including complete beginners and intermediate, planning innovative lessons and creating activities with authentic material.
I am currently working with one-to-one tuitions with a more tailored approach adapted to the student's needs and expectations.

Tutoring Approach:

I love involving students into the 'Italian world': natural and artistic heritage, social customs and peculiarities.
In my professional experience as a teacher I have developed a communicative approach able to show short-term improvements in the students' speaking ability and competence.
My lessons are student-centred enabling the tutee to effectively practise the language in an active way.
The interest is stimulated through innovative and engaging activities such as games adapted to language learning as well as audio, video and visual material.
The grammar is instructed through an inductive approach to make the student able to understand the concept within a specific context, and pronunciation is facilitated with a focus on individual phonemes, stress and intonation.
This active and engaging approach is the perfect way to stimulate the students' interest and motivation in learning a new language.

Personal Description:
I have always been passionate about English and have studied it up to degree level; also doing further learning and completing a TEFL course so that I am able to deliver another dynamic to my tutoring. I would like to pass on my love of the subject to the pupils that I tutor and help them in any way I can to achieve a high standard. With working in the primary school setting it has connected me with Maths in such a big way. The techniques that have been developed are engaging and I find it a great subject to tutor. I definitely think that it is a key subject for keeping the mind active and focused. I have always been a dedicated and hard-working individual who is able to communicate with people of all ages and backgrounds. A quality that I possess is being a people person and this is an attribute that I think is also important when you are in this profession; showing that you can fully engage with the person that you are tutoring as well as the subject. Looking forward to meeting you and helping you progress towards your targets!

Teaching Experience:

I am currently a tutor full time but I have worked as a teaching assistant with all abilities. I have also worked extensively with students on academic work in an editing capacity.

I also work at a Saturday school tutoring groups of students from reception up to GCSE level and at all abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I am flexible and able to cater to individual needs as I know that not everyone learns in the same way. I will make sure that the sessions that I conduct are appropriate to the individual learner.

I like to involve parents as much as possible throughout the entire process and include elements such a copy of the lesson plan every week so that parents can follow what we work on.

Personal Description:
Hello! I'm a 30-year-old professional freelance saxophonist and music educator from Sydney, Australia. I am living and working in the UK with my wife, a physiotherapist. I am jazz trained but have a love of all music and a wealth of experience tutoring individuals, groups and directing ensembles in many different genres. I am also a freelance session musician and have done a lot of TV, touring and recording work, including with Guy Sebastian (AUS), Friendly Fires (UK) and Aloe Blacc (USA).

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching saxophone for 15 years (half my life!) and have experience teaching ages 9-60, from complete beginners to university music students, and from people looking for a fun hobby to students intent on becoming professional players.

Tutoring Approach:

I am committed to giving beginning pupils the best possible start on the instrument, with care taken to ensure good fundamentals of posture, breathing, sound production and technique. This prevents students from reaching a plateau in their learning that may discourage them and hinder their progress on the instrument. Aware that everyone learns differently, I am able to adapt the style, content and pace of my tuition. I am completely besotted with music and the saxophone, and it would seem that this rubs off on my students!

Personal Description:
I was born and grew up in France, attending French schools throughout my lower education. Both parents being British I am therefore fully bilingual in French and English. This early learning has given me a natural ability and passion for languages which is why I opted to study German and Spanish up to Baccalaureate level. I also lived in Germany for part of my education and, upon returning to France, undertook advanced studies in German, leading me to obtain a German Abitur as well as a French Baccalauréat. I moved to the UK to study Architecture and am now married to a teacher!

Teaching Experience:

I tutored struggling students in Maths and Physics at GSCE and A-level, whilst always having been available to help friends in France with their English and German homework. During my time as an undergraduate, I also supported students who were studying towards a degree in French.

Tutoring Approach:

There is no single approach which will work with everybody so I am committed to finding out what works best for you! However we choose to go forward, I will always aim to make it fun and enjoyable, and make sure there is progress every session.

Unfortunately, I am currently unable to arrange new lessons before 7.30pm on a weekday evening.
