Personal Description:
I have been a private tutor for 14 years. I started tutoring during my PhD in Biological Chemistry and have been tutoring ever since, including periods where I was working overseas in Italy, Belgium, France and Spain. I am currently a university research scientist developing new drug therapies. I am originally from the UK but have worked on several projects around Europe. As such, I speak both Italian and French in addition to English, which is my mother language.

Teaching Experience:

I have a vast amount of teaching experience. I have conducted both one to one tutoring as well as university seminar groups. I have tutored science to all levels from key stage three up to university level and have worked with pupils of ages ranging from 11 to 24. In addition, I have tutored Italian and French as well as English during periods when working abroad.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an extremely friendly approach to tutoring. I try to develop a rapport with each of my students in order to make lessons fun and more interesting. I often find that many students, particularly young students, struggle in class simply from not finding subjects engaging and can't relate to them, which is why I aim to demonstrate how subjects can be related to real life. Furthermore, I focus on aspects of subjects which, once understood, link to more complicated topics. I often find that students who have not fully understood the initial aspect of a subject struggle in future lessons when their teacher has moved on. Therefore, continual revision which complements the student's school or college classes is a large aspect of how I approach tutoring.

Personal Description:
I am a 30 year old female graduate from the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow. I have a joint Honours degree in French and Italian (language and studies) for which I gained a 2:1. I also have a Masters in Marketing which I also obtained from the University of Strathclyde. I am currently working in the Modern Languages department of St Ninian's High School in East arendreeshire. I spent a year abroad in Lyon, France, during my fourth year of university, where I worked as an English Language Assistant in two high schools. I am extremely patient and understanding and have a lot of experience tutoring both young children and teenagers, especially in French and Italian. I am passionate about working with and helping others and find it to be a most rewarding experience and I would love to pass on my knowledge and skills, in my specialist subjects, in order to help develop the skills of the tutees I will be working with. I am a very driven, confident and enthusiastic individual and I give 100% to everything I am involved with and I am passionate about achieving results and helping others to do so also.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified French & Italian teacher in secondary education and have acquired a great amount of experience throughout my different posts and have gained great confidence in teaching the new National 4 and 5 qualifications. I also have experience teaching the Higher Course in both languages. During my fourth year of University, I worked in two high schools in Lyon, France as an English language assistant, teaching children, teenagers and young adults, from the age of nine to twenty three. I was responsible for helping them with all aspects of the language, and developing their reading, writing, listening and verbal skills by preparing and working on a number of different activities. I also taught them about British culture, history and lifestyles so as to help develop their knowledge of Britain, particularly Scotland, in general. I ensured that I worked differently with different individuals, depending on their style of learning and I took a different approach accordingly. I aimed to make my style of teaching both informative and fun so that they enjoyed learning and I believe this is something I am always successful in as many tutees I have worked with have commented on my positive and helpful way of teaching.

In my final year of high school I was involved in the 'Peer Education' programme whereby I went into five different French and Italian classes and helped those who were experiencing difficulties with the subjects. I helped particularly with grammar issues as these seemed to pose the most problems for pupils and I also helped them prepare for upcoming speaking and writing tests. I also helped pupils to understand easier ways of making the most of their French or Italian dictionary and taught them creative and simple of ways of tackling listening and reading tests. Moreover, I worked on a one to one basis with a Higher grade pupil who was experiencing problems with French and we explored different ways of making difficult areas that much easier. I was also part of the 'Paired Reading' programme where I worked with pupils aged eleven to fifteen who experienced reading difficulties. I met with three pupils for one hour each week, on an individual basis, and we would work on techniques for improving their reading ability and they would read to me. These two programmes were very gratifying, especially when I witnessed a pupil's confidence grow as their reading skills improved.

I have also tutored two family friends, both in French and Italian, with a great focus on exam preparation and the skills that they needed to do well on class tests. I also help my niece and nephew with their French, focusing greatly on the areas they find the most difficult.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a different approach to my tutoring depending on the individual I am working with. On my first session with my tutee I will find out the areas that they are experiencing the most difficulty in, and what their strengths and weaknesses are, as this will help me to develop an effective and helpful way of teaching. I prepare various worksheets, practice tests and activities which are interactive and will allow for valuable learning. I will ask the tutee what their preferred way of learning is and look at ways in which they successfully learn in other subjects and try to incorporate this in to my way of teaching. I encourage tutees to ask questions wherever necessary and to state if they wish me to try a different approach. I believe communication is the key to successful learning and I pride myself on my friendly and approachable nature and my ability to achieve results in my tuition. On the whole, I am aware that my way of teaching has to be of benefit to the tutee so I will tailor my approach to suit their wants and needs.

Personal Description:
I am a native speaker of Turkish. I've been living in England since 1997 and completed my Computer Science degree in 2006 at Aston University / Birmingham. For my final year project I developed computer program to translate between Turkish and English. The program was build using a dictionary, set of rules listed in a pattern and a logic to extract meaning using the dictionary and the pattern. Turkish is morphologically a complex language. However complexity can be simplified by learning the patterns, and then enjoy making sentences using logic. I find learning a language exciting myself and after my degree started to learn German. Through listening to cd's of Michael Thomas. It was fascinating to see that he was using the same technique to teach couple of his students. During the learning process it was their logic that was being challenged more than their memory of words and phrases. I think it is ok to 'cheat' and look up words that you don't remember. Once you start making sentences using particular words and you are comfortable with the sentence you will also remember the word due to the pattern you have built in your mind. Regardless of our individual learning styles, I think building patterns is a more permanent and easy way of learning than trying to memorise everything.

Teaching Experience:

I ve been giving private tuition in Birmingham, and now I would like to continue this in Bournemouth. I am currently doing a research about effective ways of teaching Turkish. I am interested in teaching Turkish because I enjoy teaching, also the experience will support my project. My ultimate aim is to write and record my own teaching materials for learning Turkish

Tutoring Approach:

I developed my interest in languages through my degree. I am competent in teaching, and I will adopt my technique based on the individual's learning style. Most native English speaking people in the UK finds agglutinative languages difficult to comprehend, as they attempt to 'understand' by comparing them with their own or some other European language. I believe that I can provide techniques that will overcome this difficulty. I enjoy teaching Turkish because I believe that I can understand how different individuals perceive and learn. I find it challenging and rewarding to be able to connect with people, deliver information the way they will appreciate, and see people enjoying the experience of learning.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified secondary school art teacher, and university lecturer in History of Art. I completed my PhD in History of Art at University College London (UCL) in 2013. I have published my research in a number of academic journals and edited book collections, and I am a practicing artist, currently based in Hulme, Manchester. I am also currently a Junior Research Fellow at University College London's Institute of Advanced Studies.

I'm based in London Monday-Wednesday and can meet students within 10 miles of Bloomsbury (WC1E 6) on these days. From Thursday-Sunday I'm based in Hulme, Manchester and can travel up to 20 miles from the city centre, or meet students at my central Manchester art studio. I'm available for Skype appointments at any time.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully trained secondary school teacher, specialising in Art & Design and Photography at KS3, KS4 & KS5. I have 10 years teaching experience, including working as a specialist Learning Support Teacher, and in Special Needs schools catering for children and young adults with a range of special educational needs, from moderate learning difficulties to profound and multiple disabilities.

I have particular expertise in studio practice (art and design), digital and darkroom photography (theory, history and practice), literacy, social and vocational skills, as well as History of Art, Anthropology and History of Medicine at undergraduate level.

I am also experienced in teaching at undergraduate level, having taught gallery-based first year History of Art courses, for University College London's History of Art Department, and on the History of Art degree programme at the University of Manchester.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a one-to-one, flexible approach to learning and teaching, which first establishes the needs and goals of the student, and then sets out clearly structured strategies for achieving these goals. These may be results-focused when preparing for exams, or aimed at developing a broader understanding of a subject area, depending upon the student's own priorities. I am happy to work with any course materials the student may provide, and I am familiar with all current GCSE and A Level syllabuses. I am able to guide both GCSE and A Level students through their studies, offering consistent, dedicated 1-2-1 tuition for the full term of the course. I can also provide practical tuition for students who are preparing their art portfolios for University submission, and can offer assistance with UCAS forms and references for students who undertake long-term A Level tuition with me.

Tutoring may take place at the student's home, or at my art studio in central Manchester, where I can provide a range of art materials and resources by prior arrangement, for more intensive practical art sessions. Please note that I can travel within 20 miles of central Manchester based on the fee structure quoted below, travelling further will incur a small additional fuel fee.

I have had recent successes with my private students, one of whom attended one-to-one sessions at my Manchester studio for 8 weeks and improved her predicted GCSE Art result of a B by two grades, achieving an A* in her final art exam. My most recent undergraduate student also attained a First overall in her History of Art degree, achieving a high score of 78 on her dissertation project, with intensive tutorial support conducted via Skype.

*Please note that due to the time-intensive nature of undergraduate level tutoring, I am only able to take on a maximum of three undergraduate tutees at any given time. Please see below for my current availability for tutoring at this level.*

I am currently tutoring ONE undergraduate student.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

University Undergraduate Level:

"I wanted a tutor to give me help and advice on my undergraduate history of art dissertation. I needed reassurance that what I was writing was okay and some one to proof read and give me their opinion on my arguments. Gemma was brilliant, she gave me the confidence that I needed to keep going with my dissertation by reassuring me that I was on the right track. She discussed my ideas with me in detail, proof read all of my work and suggested and sourced articles that I might want to have a look at. I have recently graduated from Newcastle University with a First in History of Art and Media and I know that I owe Gemma a huge thank you for the support she gave me on the way to achieving this."

Personal Description:
I have always been very passionate about maths right from a very young age ergo it has been the subject I have throughout excelled in during my academic life. I have recently graduated with a 2.1 in Maths with Business at University of Surrey. Having done A-level Maths (with over 97% in all core modules) and Further Maths as well as Maths and Additional Maths at O-levels, Iam equipped with a solid foundation when it comes to tutoring Maths. Apart from academic stuff, I try to indulge in different maths activities such as UK Senior Maths challenge or Senior Maths Team challenge (on behalf of college). I have also been a Business Advisor for Young Enterprise UK's company programme.

Teaching Experience:

I haven't got an official experience as such but I have been tutoring my friends and family over years. They have always recommended me to get into teaching since they say that I have all the qualities to be a great teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

My style is not at all fixed. Since maths has different aspects to it so I approach every student based on their weaknesses which I discuss on the first meeting. This means if someone has difficulties in remembering formulas, I work accordingly. If someone gets confused on how to approach a question, I adapt a different style. So it all depends on my tutee-which area he needs to work most on.

My tuition is tailor-made and flexible, according to each pupil's needs and requirements.
I ask the pupil to do homework, as there is no learning without personal work.
Depending on the level, I prefer to follow a book, for example Façon de parler 1 for absolute beginners. I of course add exercises, explanations, texts and resources to the book.

Please feel free to contact me for any enquiry: I am available for weekly lessons or for a one-off session!
Feel free also to be joined by a friend or two and share the cost!

Alors, à bientôt j'espère !

Personal Description:
I am a 54 year old mother of three grown up children and one a adorable granddaughter. I love working with young people and children. And really enjoy encouraging young people to fullfill their potential. I may be slightly more expensive than university students who offer tuition however I have teaching and exam experience and good exam results.

I have 14 years experience teaching Biology in an outstanding school; teaching GCSE and A Level.

I have a good exam results track record. On two occasions supporting over half of my GCSE students to gain A*; as well as many of my A level students gaining A and A*.

I also tutor primary aged children Maths and English.

My tutoring takes place after school and on Saturday mornings at my own premises.

Teaching Experience:

I have some early years experience from when I lived in New Zealand for fourteen years. However, my more relevant experience to this is I have a 2:1 degree in Biomedical science, and 13 years experience of teaching KS 3 science, KS 4 and A level Biology.

Tutoring Approach:

As I am a very positive person I encourage my students with lots of praise. However, this is not just when they do well but also when they try hard. I emphasise that its learning from mistakes that improves learning. I strongly encourage the ethos of having an open mindset; only by giving something a go can you succeed! I lead my students to become independent thinkers and learners.

Personal Description:
I'm an undergraduate at the University of Oxford studying for a degree in English Language and Literature. I have achieved As or A*s in all my qualifications and thoroughly enjoy being an academic. I'm passionate about both English and French so I find tutoring fun as well as rewarding.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience involves editing coursework essays for my peers and running study groups for A-level French and English classes. I have attended many seminars focusing on effective study skills and over the years I have developed my own highly effective systems of organisation, learning, and memorization which I aim to pass on to all of my tutees. I work with my tutees to find out how they learn most effectively and help them to turn their work into note forms which they can easily process as well as explaining any difficulties they come across in their subject.

Tutoring Approach:

In my tutoring I hope to imbue my tutees with an appreciation of their subject as well as increasing their understanding. I aim to make my tutorials enjoyable as well as educational.
In regards to French I have a strong grasp of grammar as well as an extensive topic based vocabulary which coincides with the A-leve and GCSE syllabi. My French tutoring focuses primarily on exam skills such as reading and comprehension, listening, writing, and speaking and I show my tutees how to maximize the marks they achieve in each section. However I also enjoy speaking French and I also hope to improve the fluency and understanding of my tutees in a conversational as well as an exam setting.
In regards to English I would work with my tutees to help them develop close reading and analytical skills which are invaluable when it comes to doing well in the unseen section of exam papers. I would also teach my tutees any relevant contextual information which surrounded their set texts and would explain why it is relevant and how to use it to pick up marks in exams. I have read the majority of texts which are set for A-level and below but if I were to come across a text I was unfamiliar with I read it and prepare notes on it in advance of any meetings with a tutee.
My tutoring can be tailored to suit the individual needs of each of my tutees. I hope to teach in such a way that my students can appreciate the joy in their subject as well as helping them to do well academically.

Personal Description:
I am currently doing a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Reading. I finished my Masters in July 2015 and received a First Class. Have tutored several people throughout my time at university, ranging from KS2 to third year university Maths students, including someone studying for their PGCE numeracy test.

Teaching Experience:

Have tutored several people throughout my time at university, ranging from KS2 to third year university maths students, including someone studying for their PGCE numeracy test.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very comforting and relaxed approach to tutoring. Too many students are not reaching their full potential because they are intimidated by the subject, and so can't break it down into logical steps. Tutoring styles should be dynamic and flexible, and for students who are already excelling in subjects, you should push them past the level they are at currently at and make them strive for excellence.

Personal Description:
I have graduated from Queen Mary University of London with a BSc Honours in Mathematics.

Teaching Experience:

Maths and Science at all age groups from Primary School up until A Levels.
Business Studies and Economics at GCSE and A Levels.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring varies between age groups.
With younger children, I prefer the use of examples, starting with easier questions and building up to more difficult questions.
I feel that this provides a strong foundation and the confidence to expand their knowledge of the subject.
With older students, I believe that they should dictate the method of teaching and I adapt to their style.

Personal Description:
I am a passionate historian who since finishing my Masters degree in 2014 has continued to study and write about history and politics amongst other subjects.

I have been teaching privately for the past seven years and this has ranged from home schooling to teaching several students at once. I have experience teaching at GCSE/AS/A2 and undergraduate level, and teaching one on one or groups of several students. Although I mostly teach history I teach all of the subjects offered and I am extremely proficient at teaching exam technique and essay structuring.

In my spare time I enjoy keeping up to date with politics and learning about new historical periods and areas. I also enjoy playing rugby and cricket and help to teach both of these sports.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years teaching experience at various levels from primary to masters level. I also have experience teaching individually and as a group.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is based upon several elements. Firstly, it is important to be flexible as every student is different and learn in different ways therefore it is essential to be flexible and adaptable. Secondly, it is based upon being organised and methodical in planning and preparation and finally upon making lessons interesting and interactive.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Zuri and I am an American MA History student at King's College London. I specialize in study skills, writing, history (particularly intersections of race, class, and gender), and voice! I am very interested in teaching voice lessons and I will be able to help with basic music theory as well as vocal coaching as I am a jazz, musical theater, and classical singer. If you have ever wanted to sing, but feel you lack the confidence or technique to do so, I would be glad to help. I don't have a piano, but I'd be happy to meet at a practice room in London, or just use backing tracks on my laptop. As far as history, writing, and study skills, I would be more than happy to edit essays, show you how to improve your arguments, and teach you more about the methods of studying history. I can travel anywhere the tubes will take me, but I prefer zones 1 and 2. We could easily meet at a library, coffee shop, or bookstore. Also, I am available Monday after 12pm and every other day except for Tuesdays!

Teaching Experience:

English as a foreign Language for Roeland (Belgian summer camps)-advanced English
Math and English tutor in Boston (Prospect Hill Academy)-preparation for standardized exams
Engineering and math instructor for Girl Scout Camps
Singing lessons for students and Tufts University

Tutoring Approach:

I will first assess what you need to learn, what your skill set is at the moment, and how long we have to work together. Then I will develop a plan with very tangible end goals and milestones along the way. If you only need one session, of course we shall expedite this process. Everything will be catered to your needs!

Personal Description:
I have been involved in martial arts for over 14 years now and enjoy the process of teaching others how to better protect themselves. In my current main job, I teach and train members of staff and provide workforce development for over 1000 staff members on a variety of topics. My second job is as a Kickboxing and Self Defence Instructor at the University of Sunderland, where I have worked for over 6 years.

My peers and tutors have told me that my mannerisms and personality lend itself well to instructing and teaching. I am patient, understanding and explain subjects in an accessible way. I genuinely get enjoyment out of teaching, especially that moment where a student suddenly 'gets it' and then starts to take leaps and bounds in the training.

I sincerely look forward to hearing from you and training you or your class to better protect themselves.

Weekday's would have to be organised at least 2 weeks in advance so I can secure a leave day to accommodate this training.

Teaching Experience:

- 1st Dan Black belt for ASMAA Freestyle
- 1st Dan Black belt for Kickboxing
- Level 1 Coaching qualification in Kickboxing and Self Defence
- Phase 3 in Jeet Kune Do, Kali and Silat
- Over 14 years in martial arts, 6 years teaching
- Trained Gold, Silver and Bronze winning Kickboxers at a national and local level
- Part of ASMAA (All-Styles Martial Arts Association)

Tutoring Approach:

A personalised, considerate and professional approach. I would speak to you to find out what needs that you have, for example if you encounter situations at work or in your personal life, and then train you in a bespoke, specific way to deal with those issues. If there are no specific issues you are looking to cover, then a general overview would be covered that is useful for all walks of life.

Every step of the way I will explain concepts, reinforce them with real-life examples and ensure that, in your mind, you have confidence in the techniques I will be teaching. You will then have the opportunity to train these techniques at your own pace, with detailed feedback and giving you opportunities to improve and praising good form.

All techniques can be 'pressure tested' to ensure that they will work under stress or imminent attack.

For those students that are younger, I have delivered sessions that gently guide students into the world of martial arts and about respect for one another. Fitness, games and good solid technique would be the backbone of any sessions delivered.

Personal Description:
As a current medical student at UCL, and with lots of teaching experience, I know by exactly what my tutees need to ace their A levels, GCSEs, university entry tests, and interviews.

As such, I will tailor an educational program suited to each individual and their needs, which combines a focus on exam techniques and exam preparation, with real, holistic, genuine understanding of the material covered - the most sustainable and enjoyable approach to learning.
This will give my tutees the best chance at passing their exams and retaining the information they learn to use throughout their life.

About me:
Though I am new to the UK Tutors site, I have students across London and plenty of experience teaching and interacting with young people - something that I love and wanted a career in before I decided to study medicine. I interned as a youth worker for a year, spending a lot of time with all age groups and learning how to effectively communicate and deal with different young people - who are often very interesting characters!
I also spent my gap year abroad in Spain, where I was an au pair. I looked after an 11 year old boy (doing plenty of cooking and cleaning - not my favourite!) and teaching many private students English, which I found extremely rewarding. Although I knew no Spanish before this, I left with a high level of fluency (B2).

A little about what I like and my background! I am 23 years old, and having grown up in Hertfordshire I now live in Camden Town where I study medicine at UCL. I hope to specialise in neurology when I graduate. I absolutely love sport, and in 2012 I won Hertfordshire's Dacorum Young Achiever award, for finishing the Ironman Triathlon, climbing kilimanjaro, and cycling Lands End to John O Groats solo. I really enjoy music and acting, and have performed at a number of events and shows. I also serve as an Army reservist, which I enjoy as a hobby and doesn't take too much of my time.

Teaching Experience:

- Multiple private students across London
- Year spent as a youth worker, interacting with many different age groups.
- Year spent as an Au pair in Spain, looking after an 11 year old boy.
- During this year had many private students to whom I taught English.
- Have been a young leader on 3 different summer sports camps.

Tutoring Approach:

As briefly outlined earlier, we will approach learning using fresh and engaging educational psychology methods, whilst focusing on two particular emphases to maximise fun and success; complete comprehension, and exam preparation.

From our first session, I will meet my tutee at the level of understanding that they are at, and gradually build upon that level to ensure that the foundations of knowledge that are essential to their subject are completely understood, that when they move on to harder problems they are able to tackle them effectively. A common and frustrating problem I have seen in the educational system is that many teachers consistently misunderstand and misinterpret the level of knowledge that their students actually have, which causes massive problems down the line and lack of enthusiasm in school. If I see that a particular student is having problems with understanding a concept, I will break it down into its constituent parts until we can identify exactly where the confusion lies, and together we will work at that until we are able to solve the problem.

Another frustrating and often unidentified weakness a particular student may have is in exam techniques and preparation. It is the unfortunate, but perhaps inevitable problem with our current education system. I knew many clever individuals at school that simply could not pass exams to a high level, and whose exam results did not reflect the ability and knowledge that they had. This was often because teachers simply did not emphasize or communicate how important it was to understand the exam boards and they way they mark exams. I realized this early on and spent many private hours away from school in trawling through past papers, mark schemes, and examiners reports to get in to the mind of my examiner. Many of my fellow pupils, some superior to me, simply did not realize this soon enough and so suffered in their results. I will ensure that my tutees know exactly how fickle and unforgiving the exam boards may be and prepare them to the best of their ability.

As I hope to practice in neurology when I graduate medical school, employing new methods of educational psychology and unlocking the potential of the brain is something I do with my students, using up to date and new study techniques to maximize memory retention and comprehension. These include multiple forms of memory encoding, such as visual, acoustic and elaborative encoding, and thoroughly bending a given concept to many creative scenarios - ensuring it is processed in an optimal way.

Something else I want to say is that if my tutee has a particular aspiration to join medical school, I would be an excellent choice for them as I can guide them closely and in detail. We can cover different medical schools, entrance requirements, personal statements, interview techniques and much more to make sure that they succeed in their goals. They would be free to contact me at any time with any questions, to which I will gladly offer my advice. I want them to get on to this brilliant course!
Of course this offer extends to all my tutees, that I would help them reach any aspired university course, but my knowledge will naturally be more limited.
