Teaching Experience:

My main experience of teaching one-on-one is in the form of vocal tuition.

I also have experience of teaching in the classroom, where I have worked with children aged 8-11 teaching a variety of subjects (including English Booster Classes, English Literature, Reading, Egyptology and Drama).

I have a lot of experience of working with young people, with extensive experience gained from working with the Admissions department of Worcester College (at the University of Oxford) as well as working as a Choral Scholar at the College (where I had to provide an example to the young choristers of one of the choirs).

In addition to this I was a Junior Foster Carer for 11 years (from ages 7-18), where I worked alongside various members of Social Services in order to provide a stable home for children in care.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a traditional one, particularly when it comes to the teaching of Latin and Greek, which is taught by composition into the language from English and through the reading of original texts.

I ask for a tutee to try their hardest - as long as they do, they will be met with a tutor who will give their all in order to help them achieve their goal, a tutor dedicated to his teaching and his pupil.

I also incorporate modern methods into my teaching, including the use of ICT and the latest examples of Digital Humanities e.g. The Perseus Project.

My name is Jasmine, I am 19 years old, and I am currently studying TESOL and Japanese at York St John University. My career goal is to become a translator, and I am working hard to help that happen. My hobbies are reading, writing, and music, which is also how I spend most of my free time (that and running around after my two younger brothers!).

Teaching Experience:

Though I have had no professional experience tutoring, during secondary school I was a mentor for helping younger children with reading and writing. I also have several language partners that I help to enhance their English skills as well as correcting their grammar. My university course includes the TESOL certificate, which specialises in teaching English as a second language, improving my teaching skills.

Tutoring Approach:

As stated previously, while I have never professionally tutored, I think this role would be good for me. I am patient and persevering, and understand through my own experiences that it is not always possible to learn through one method, but instead, there are many ways to learn new information that is tailored to your needs. While I am young meaning I may have less experience in this field, I also think an advantage of my age is that I am very open minded.

After leaving school, I studied at Nottingham University for a BA in Music, then for a MA in Theology from the London School of Theology. Having worked for a while at an inner-city secondary school, I went on to complete a research masters and am currently studying for a PhD. My own interests are principally in theology, philosophy and politics, but also the arts, culture and social work. I am married, have two children, and am a keen football fan (Manchester United).

I have worked with extremely bright students but also have a lot of experience of working with students with special educational needs.

Tutoring Approach:

Education is about more than being able to pass exams, although this is obviously important! I have worked hard for my qualifications and belive in disciplined, productive study; however for some students getting the highest possible grade is not necessarily the most important thing. Each person is an individual with different strengths and weaknesses, so I try to structure how I teach around individual needs and goals. When teaching I also believe that giving people self confidence, an ability to think critically and an enjoyment of the subject is an important part of helping them to improve.

To introduce myself I am married with two children, a son working in Brussels and a daughter at secondary school. There must be history in the blood in our family as I have a Cambridge history degree, my wife a history degree from Warwick and our son studied history at King's College London!
I remain fascinated by history and always remember the opening lines of J. P Hartley are The Go-Between (some of you may have seen Julie Christie in the film?) "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there". Recent events underline the importance of our past and understanding how we came to be where we are.

Holidays for me often include visits to historic places. In the last few years, for example we have seen the Vatican, Knossos, Granada and the historic places in New England -Boston, Salem and the Plymouth Plantation. My favourite holiday country is France - because of the food!

Teaching Experience:

Since September 2007 I have been involved in distance learning tutoring Key Stage 3GSCE and AS/A2 history for an open learning organisation. I was pleased though it was mostly due to the students that three obtained A*s and three A in the first IGCSE history examination in summer 2011.This work has included the regular marking of students' essays and other work and support and guidance leading to examinations. I have attended training for the new A Levels.

I can also advise graduate and postgraduate students on dissertations, including proof reading.

Individual tutorial support has been or students retaking examinations, mostly AS and A2 on all three examining boards and I have generally made a positive difference to their results. I do not claim to be able to cover all areas of history but my range is wide. At AS/A2 I can support students covering English history topics from the Tudors to the post Second World war period, Imperial Russia from the Emancipation of the serfs until the 1917 Revolutions and the Soviet Union from 1917 until its ending in 1991. I am also confident in topics in German history from unification in 1870 down to reunification in 1989. Similarly I can cover many topics in French history starting with the revolution in 1789. In terms of international history I am familiar with the key themes from circa 1870 through to the end of the Cold War, including the Vietnam War. I can also cover most themes in American history from the Civil War until the post-war era.
At GCSE and Key Stage 3 I can cover most topics and more recently I have also been teaching a school age pupil with autism. I have an up to date CRB

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to students is to combine high expectations with a willingness at all times to help and advance their understanding, self confidence and self esteem and encourage them to work with increasing independence. When appropriate I work out with them a study programme with clear goals.

Many of the distance learning students I have taught have been home based because they have withdrawn from school due to bullying and some are living outside the UK. So I have good experince in working with those who, for whatever reason, have found learning difficult

My work in supporting students who are resitting examinationsbgeins with a, careful review of their performance. I , check the past examination papers and the examiners' guidance from the exmanination websites so as to discover why a student's performance has fallen short of expectations and plan a programme to achieve better in a reset.

However tutors are not miracle workers. I would stress that the students cannot expect me as tutor to do everything for them but rather they also have to make a major contribution in order to achieve success.

At the academic skills pre-sessional courses at the University of Birmingham in 2012-2016 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning. I am a creative teacher and try to interest and enthuse students, so that they enjoy learning and celebrate their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a selection of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan of work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain self- help book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.

Tutoring Approach:

I concentrate on speaking and listening with some reading in class. Writing tasks are set for homework. I always find out what it is that the pupil wants to concentrate on: it could be just listening with comprehension tasks or just grammar with gap fills. That way the courses may meet individual needs. I usually agree a course plan at the start so that the pupil knows what's coming next for each lesson and we can change it if necessary as we go along. I explain what we're going to do, we do some role plays, some listening tasks. We use material from Pasos A First Course in Spanish. For the listening there is box ticking or answers to comprehension questions. At the end of a 20 hour course the learner should be able to get by in a Spanish speaking country, as a visitor, in the topics covered.
I charge the basic rate per hour below plus a 1 surcharge per mile travelled.

I am teacher who has taken early retirement. I have 15 years experience of teaching at infant level and further education level.

I have many years teaching experience at every level from Key Stage 3 to post graduate.

During these years I have become acutely aware of how valuable it is for young learners to progress to secondary education with a good grasp of key skills, particularly in Maths. Since retiring from full time teaching I am focusing on working with primary age students to help them develop these skills.

Teaching Experience:

Maths teaching in a number of secondary schools at GCSE level + Key/Core Skill Numeracy at college level.

Tutoring Approach:

I see Maths as a language. In simple terms the language of numbers (let's not get too bogged down in the tricky stuff like algebra at this stage). As with all languages, if it's one you're familiar with it's pretty straightforward. If it's a 'foreign' language it can be a complete mystery.

Unfortunately all too many young people progress to secondary school feeling uneasy about their understanding of Maths and therefore develop a mistrust or even fear of the subject. The longer such reservations are held the more deeply ingrained they become. A fear of Maths developed while in primary school can hold learners back at all subsequent levels.

My aim is to help young learners develop a positive and confident relationship with the subject at the earliest possible age.

Usually, I begin with ensuring that they have a strong foundation of the topic before studying it in greater detail. A strong foundation allows the tutee to apply their knowledge more effectively to exam style questions.
If the tutee would like to consolidate a particular topic, I would prepare various questions either from past papers or text-books to ensure that their understanding is clear. Also, I believe that memorising key definitions and facts can be very useful in an exam. Therefore, I use various memory games, flash cards and mini-tests to ensure that the tutee can recall these key definitions in a time-pressured exam environment. Through being a published research chemist, I have been able to understand various topics in detail such as, 'photo catalysed transformation of some toxic substances on semi-conducting chalcogenides'. I have also written a thesis on this topic and therefore, I believe, that my knowledge will allow me to tutor for A-Level Chemistry very effectively.
Due to my ample experience of working in different fields, I have gained good communication and problem solving skills. I believe in having a high standard in work and hope that it will reflect in my tutee's progress.
