Personal Description:
I have been teaching 16-19 year olds and adult learners for over 13 years, mainly in London and more recently in N Ireland. I love teaching, enabling and helping others learn. I have vast amounts of experience working with young people and adults from a range of backgrounds and with a range of abilities. I understand the anxieties and challenges involved in being a learner; as well as teaching I too am a student, studying for a Degree in Counselling, so realise how important it is to give learners support, clear guidance and help them create a structure for their learning. These are all the things I need to be able to continue studying. I am a friendly, approachable and organised person who can genuinely get along with, hopefully, just about anyone. I am passionate about music, cinema, exercise, my friends and family. I am comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback and dealing with other's emotions and anxieties. After 15 years working as a tutor/trainer/teacher I still believe learning is a reciprocal process and remain enthused by it.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 15 years teaching experience.

- I am currently teaching A level/Access level Psychology, Counselling Qualifications at various levels & HND courses

- Prior to that, I was Head of Psychology (A level) and Lead Lecturer at Tower Hamlets College - responsible for all aspects of teaching and learning. I have taught a range of syllabi including AQA, OCR & WJEC. I have also taught on numerous C&G introduction to teacher training courses and on part-time PGCE programmes as well as doing a significant amount of one-to-one work as a mentor of trainee teachers. In addition, I was a Tutor Leader, with responsibility for a case load of vulnerable 'at risk' learners.
- Birkbeck, University of London. Here I was a Psychology lecturer for open access adult courses including Foundations of Modern Psychology and Psychological issues in Adolescence. For the later I was solely responsible for developing the syllabus and all resources as well as the delivery and assessment of written work. Again, I am on sabbatical from this post.

- Over the years I have undertaken private tutoring for a range of learners - young people and adults, for both Psychology & Teacher-Training.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching and tutoring style is entirely learner-focused. I aim to empower learners to identity their own strengths and areas for development, but supporting them in this process. I prepare materials that will meet their needs, with an eye always on the syllabus and the skills needed in order to pass any assessment (exams or coursework).

An effective, warm, co-operative and empathetic working relationship is what I seek to establish from the start of the tutoring process. I encourage learners to be reflective and to review/self-assess the work they do, alongside any tutor feedback. I build in regular formal and informal assessment for all tutoring, giving learners a clear sense of their journey, and their priorities at any given time during their studies. I ensure that work is marked to agreed deadlines and feedback is clear, constructive and developmental in nature. I am comfortable working in one-to-one settings, either face-to-face, over the phone or via an e-learning environment.

Thank you for reading my profile. I currently lecture at the University of Salford. I am a visiting lecturer at the University of Cambridge and an external examiner at the University of Liverpool .I am also an assessor for OCR Biology GCSE/A Level and for academics undergoing their teaching qualifications. In 2015 I was nominated by my students for best teacher and best postgraduate supervisor and in 2016 and again in 2017 I was nominated again for best teacher. I offer tuition at my home and some on line support. I have twenty years of experience of teaching. I began working as a private tutor seven years ago. This role gives me the freedom to get to know students on an individual basis and adapt to suit their needs and offers an incredible amount of job satisfaction. In 2015 I was invited to guest lecture and take on the role of medical director of studies at Cambridge, lecturing to medical students at Corpus Christi College. A post to which I shall return in 2016 I completed my PhD in rheumatology in 2009 at the University of Central Lancashire. Privately I mainly teach Biology, science, PE and study skills.I am also able to assist with other health related topics.
Prior to working within education I was a Chartered Physiotherapist within the NHS for 13 years at hospitals in my local area, achieving Senior I grade. During this time I assumed the role of Clinical Educator for students of Physiotherapy thus beginning my teaching career. While working within the NHS I was also the Physiotherapist to the England Women's football team for three years. This was a unique and memorable experience and I was immensely proud to represent my country, working with such talented individuals both at home and during tours of countries including France, Denmark, Italy, Iceland, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union. I am an internationally published author, having written and edited eight textbooks which have been translated into eleven languages, covering subjects as diverse as anatomy, assignment writing, study skills and health studies. I have been an external examiner at the Universities of East London, and Bradford for postgraduate study and currently the University of Liverpool on their undergraduate physiotherapy programme . This role includes monitoring marking quality, exam board actions ,modifications to syllabus and teaching and learning consultancy.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately for several years now. I began teaching in a professional capacity whilst working in a hospital environment where I became a Clinical Educator for undergraduate Physiotherapy students from Universities in the region. This role involved teaching and training undergraduate students within hospitals. Eventually my enthusiasm for teaching overtook that of my day job and I began teaching at Salford University on a part time basis, becoming a full time member of staff within the School of Health Sciences in 1996. I am the longest serving member of staff in the department and enjoy my job, and the interaction with students, as much now as when I first began teaching. Please note that if you are a student at the University of Salford I will be unable to offer private tuition due to a conflict of interest.

Teaching at a university entails a range of teaching methods including lecturing to hundreds of students, small and large group seminar-based sessions and a mix of theory and practical skills. Since 1998 I have been the Year One tutor which involves a pastoral element as many students are having their first experience of independence away from friends and family.

As a private tutor both in my own home and in the tutees home I mainly focus on one to one tuition which I find hugely rewarding as I am able to dedicate unwavering attention to the tutee and their chosen subjects. I have experience of teaching students from diverse backgrounds and ranging in age from 14 years to 50 years.

In 2009 I won the first ever Teaching Excellence Award at Salford University, and the following year was nominated for the Times Educational Innovative Teacher Award - both nominated by my students, a fact of which I am extremely proud.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a friendly and informal approach to teaching as I believe a relaxed environment is most conducive to learning regardless of subject or age, however i am aware that privvate tuition is a serious commitment and it is very important that there is a clear structure to the sessions. I am familiar with the syllabus for OCR, AQA and EDEXCEL for G.C.S.E., A level and degree. The first session will include an informal discussion with parents/tutee to gain an understanding of the tutees requirements and to explain my role and how I can aid learning.
The structure of the sessions are largely dictated by the tutee, the subjects they wish to focus on and their preferred learning style and this can be discussed at the first session. As the student develops, the structure can be adapted in line with this.


Additional Information

While I prefer to teach in my own home under certain circumstances I may be able to travel to the student. This will be subject to the inclusion of travelling costs in addition to the tuition fee. This will be undertaken by prior arrangement; please indicate your requirements on initial contact.

I studied Classics at King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 2009. I then trained as a teacher at Queens' College, Cambridge, graduating with a PGCE in 2010. I have been a private tutor since 2009, and have now clocked up thousands of hours' tutoring experience in Latin and Ancient Greek. I tutor both languages to degree-level standard in London, Cambridge and online. I love Classics, and my main aim is to make my lessons fun and inspirational.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring Latin and Ancient Greek intensively for the past 7 years, with thousands of hours' teaching experience to date. I have taught towards all major public exams in both languages, such as Common Entrance, GCSE, AS, A2, SAT, Pre-U and even BA (i.e. University exams). I am familiar with the entrance processes for a number of independent and grammar schools, and have had a lot of experience teaching towards scholarship papers. I have tutored many students applying to Cambridge and Oxford, and can provide in-depth advice and support with choosing the right course and college, as well as getting to the necessary level for the language tests. I have also taught the languages to those who have decided to learn them purely for fun! In addition to my face-to-face teaching, I have taught extensively online (about 50% of my teaching is conducted on Skype), and have built up an array of handy techniques to get the most from the online format. I was Head of Latin at a school in Bury St Edmunds for two years (September 2011 to July 2013). Since October 2010, I have been supervising Cambridge undergraduates in Latin and Ancient Greek (colleges so far have included Pembroke, Downing, Homerton, Queens', King's, Murray Edwards, Newnham, Caius, Peterhouse, St John's, Emmanuel and Trinity). I also own and run a private tuition agency, Titanium Tutors, which I set up in 2011, managing a team of 8 staff members and over 1000 inspirational tutors.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching style is structured and thorough. I start every lesson with a five minute recap of the key content of the previous session, checking how much the tutee remembers. A typical lesson will then consist of a translation, in which I ask the tutee to note down each unknown word as it is encountered and to devise a memory trick which will help them to recall the word in a five minute test at the end of the lesson. Together with the tutee, I will then pick a grammar point which stood out in the translation exercise as requiring the most immediate attention. We will spend five to ten minutes working on that, with the tutee's understanding tested with some reinforcement exercises. At the end of the lesson we will recap all the new vocabulary and grammar which was covered, and I will typically set a manageable 20 - 30 minute homework for the next session based on what was covered in the lesson. Every lesson is of course different, and tailored to the tutee's requirements, but I find this approach works in the vast majority of cases. I consider grammar to be crucially important, but treat it as a means to an end and always emphasise the ways in which it can be usefully applied to translation rather than learned in isolation. I believe that any tutee can excel in Latin and Greek with a little guidance and a decent amount of independent work. Above all, I strive to make my lessons fun and enjoyable. I love my subject and want all of my tutees to love it too.

Personal Description:
As a British Chinese, I spent my childhood in China until I was 11 when my family moved to London. I found the pace of study of mathematics at my state school to be too slow for my curiosity. From the age of 12, I self-taught mathematics until university. During this period, I completed my GCSE maths with A* at the age of 12, A-level maths at 14 with a score of 599/600, A-level further maths at 16. For A-level studies, I completed 7 A-levels (Maths, Further Maths, Music, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Business Studies) and AS-level in ICT, all at my inner city state school. I went on to study Mathematics at Imperial College, graduated with first class honours and my final year exam results ranked first in my year - it is something I aim to teach my students.

I worked for a number of years for a finance firm in the City of London. At the same time, I have been tutoring since I was 18. My tutoring spread through recommendations, and I still have a number of long term tutees. I have always found tutoring to be most satisfying and fulfilling, especially when I witness students' progress from bafflement to appreciation, and eventually achieving their aspirations. Now I have decided to become a dedicated full time professional tutor, and has been doing so for last three years.

Teaching Experience:

I have done a great deal of one-to-one maths tuitions, more than 60 students over the last ten years and more than 5000 hours. Almost all the tuition is in mathematics, although sometimes I also help with sciences at the same time. Most of my previous students have been introduced to me by way of recommendation, a few found me from uktutors site, I have not had the need to advertise else where. I have tutored maths at GCSE, A-level, and also tutored Further Maths. All my students have done very well in their maths exams, so far all A's and A*'s, they have had offers and gone to top universities, including: Oxford, UCL, KCL, Warwick, Cardiff.

New from this academic year 2015, I also offer grade A guarantee for A level maths, with reimbursement if the guarantee is not met. I take pride and responsibility for my student's grades! Probably more than they do!

My teaching experience started from myself, as I self-taught maths until university. In order to master my subject by myself, I read many text books and assimilate the best ideas and methods of each. In the end, I summarized the best methods, which are often starkly intuitive and widely applicable. With these unique methods, a focus on deep intuitions and my own enthusiasm, the passion I have for maths is often transferred to my tutees. I am also of the philosophy that if a topic does not feel easy for a tutee, then that is my problem, not theirs. Then I would strive to find a better way to allow my tutees to understand the topic as I do, and feel as easy as I do.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring approach is one of efficiency and clarity. Efficiency and clarity means that I will be able to cover a vast amount of material in a short period of time, while not sacrificing clarity and understanding for my pupils. Students are required to learn most of the methods available for any topic. Where possible, I will emphasize the why something works the way it does as well as how to use it. All these are to help pupils to develop a deep understanding and appreciation for the subject, as well as best equip them for exams. All these can still be achieved efficiently and at speed! My pupils are usually surprised at how much we can cover and how well they can understand something at such speed. The efficiency and clarity can be achieved because I make it my goal to deliver the clearest ideas to my students as efficiently as possible. This is what I spend time doing when I am not tutoring. Along the way my students will benefit from many new ways of thinking on many topics which are not found on text books or anywhere else, which give them an edge in exams. Final note, I usually cover everything, and in advance, which will allow the student to have school lessons as revision class.

In addition, when I take someone on, it is naturally my goal to help motivate them along the way. If a tutee isn't doing enough work, I will take an active role to encourage and motivate the student to work harder. To me it is all part of what I do, if the thing that is stopping a student achieving is their habits or time management, then I will help them deal with it too.

Finally, I place great importance in maintaining a positive relationship with the tutees. Before any tuition start, we would have an informal chat with parents and student to establish how the student would like me to help him or her. It is most important that the student understand that I am here to help them achieve their goals, not that of the parents goals. This will allow us to start from a good basis to form a positive relationship in order to help the student.

Tutoring Approach:

The best tutors in my life have been the strictest ones, with high demands and set standards. I have learned from them well and would aim for the same level of aspiration they have given me. Tutoring Approach:

I use the first lesson to assess the extent of the pupil's grammatical knoweldge by asking for the recitation of tables and perhaps a translation of a small piece of prose or verse matched in difficulty to the pupil's level.

After this assessment, the following lessons are based around the needs of the pupil, with practice questions and passages forming the basis of our learning.

Imperative to my lessons are a sense of humour and frequent chats - this provides relief, which in turn stimulates concentration and allows for a rapport to to be built with the pupil.

My eagerness and determination to learn and teach foreign languages (French, English and Italian) developed my interest in analyzing, comparing and synthesizing information as well as enabling me to discover various methods of teaching a considerable amount of knowledge. Through assiduity and responsibility I managed to find the path towards mastering these foreign languages and teaching them with enthusiasm.

Foreign languages are a source of mystery, a mix of rules and originality, a mine of meanings and linguistic surprises, a challenge. I've always found them a very absorbing and fulfilling but sometimes frustratingly vast field which attracts and challenges to a thorough study and wider analysis.

Personal Description:
I have recently retired from full-time teaching but remain very active in the field of education. Apart from private tuition, I work as a consultant for schools both locally and nationally; I am a highly rated examiner for AQA and I deliver courses on their behalf to schools and teachers.

Teaching Experience:

I taught both Economics and Business Studies at GCSE and A level with great success in terms of examination success; for most of that time I was head of a large department.

Tutoring Approach:

Students find that I am easy to relate to. I am very calm and friendly by nature, the vast experience I have of working with students aged 14-19 means that I feel very comfortable working with young people. This is something which appears not to diminish with age! The depth of knowledge I have means that I can recognize whether or not a student has full understanding of ideas and if they have not I am able to find alternative ways of explaining until the concept has been grasped. A particular strength lies in my careful and detailed analysis of past examination papers to ensure that I cover the things which are needed and avoid the things which are not.
For students who do not live in the Lincolnshire area I am able to provide on-line tuition.

Personal Description:
I'm a master student from China majoring in human nutrition in Glasgow university. Before this, in my undergraduate university in China I have worked as a proofreader of dictated draft from speech records for student union. I'm good at wording and grammar. Recently I learned a little German and Arabic to experience how people speaking varies around the world and also inspired by these teachers as to how to approach to a language from 0.

Teaching Experience:

During this year I have taught a classmate mandarin from 0. He is a Scottish. However, he is keen to learn a wide variety of languages. When he found Korean and Malay easier he gave up mandarin. Such a worldwide culture vulture! Anyway, no matter you learn mandarin for culture, travel, work, yellow-face friends, curiosity, or just Chinese restaurants, you are all warmly welcome! I can teach you from the basic pronunciation which is like singing to beautiful Chinese characters which is like dancing.....

Tutoring Approach:

I'm only available from September to December 2016. I'm friendly and very patient. If you have time for homestudying I can teach more during tutorial; if not, we will practice more together to consolidate memory. Language is for communication, absolutely not for getting a high score!
