Personal Description:
I am a qualified Modern Languages and English as a Foreign Language teacher. Languages have always played a big part in my life and have given me the opportunity to travel to, live and work in many different countries. Being able to speak another language is a valuable and rewarding skill and I enjoy encouraging and teaching others to do so.

Teaching Experience:

I have now been teaching languages for nearly 20 years. I spent 5 years living in Italy working as a language teacher, translator and then Director of Studies of an international language school in Milan, as well as one year teaching English in both Spain and France. My work abroad was varied, teaching language for Business Purposes in multinational companies, schoolchildren, general adult groups and private individuals wishing to learn for personal satisfaction.

In England I have worked as a Modern Foreign Languages teacher in both secondary and primary schools, tutored adults and children in private lessons, taught English for Academic Purposes at universities and English as a Foreign Language in adult and junior language schools.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring depends very much on the needs of the student, so the content of a primary school lesson will be very different from that of an adult's lesson. Therefore in the first session I assess competence and needs, and base my tuition on these. I have been learning languages myself for 30 years in a variety of different settings, and can appreciate and anticipate learners' difficulties. I am encouraging and approachable, and make lessons enjoyable.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced, friendly and approachable lady working on a freelance basis and am still involved with High School teaching in the Leeds area. I worked in industry before deciding to fulfil my ambition to become a teacher.

My experience as a private tutor has been extremely rewarding over the years and I have seen every one of my students go from strength to strength, and am proud to say that they have all enjoyed the one to one experience.

Teaching Experience:

I have twenty years' experience of teaching English in High Schools -class teaching and one to one tuition. My expertise also incorporates teaching English as a second language having gained a Trinity qualification in Barcelona.
Over the years I have had considerable success with a variety of students, improving achievement levels and GCSE grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very friendly person who tries to make learning fun. I understand the frustrations of young people who are demotivated and struggling to make sense of the English curriculum. My view is that there has to be a two way process and I will encourage the student to develop independent learning skills.

Practising a holistic approach allows young people to achieve their full potential through an appropriate tailor-made study plan. This will support their individual needs and requirements for personal and educational development.

I am happy to teach students in my home or the student's-depending on distance. Travel expenses would be charged if not in my local area-LS17 (North Leeds).

Personal Description:
I'm a ex-mathematical physicist from Cambridge turned film director, and also freelance as a data-scientist. I have two funded feature films in development and have made music videos and adverts. I started tutoring when I switched careers because the film industry is unstable, especially as a freelancer. I keep up the tutoring now because I enjoy it and look for assignments I think are interesting and where I can really make a difference.

I am passionate about the subjects I tutor in and education in general. Education forms the foundation for freeing us from bigotry and ignorance, makes us better people and permits us to live richer, better lives. Knowledge is liberating and my subjects especially open many doors. They are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

I'd say my approach to education is rigorous, highly intellectual and what one might term renaissance in approach. I'm interested in all aspects of education, and how our disparate academic disciplines connect which is somewhat antithetical to the modern approach to education but just the sort of thing one needs to get into Oxbridge and the like.

Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible, regardless of their ability; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many (over 100) students privately over the past six years, improving their results in all cases where the students have followed my advice and worked hard. I'm only interested in teaching people who are prepared to do this work and better themselves, especially if its for something like the 11+/common entrance.

Beside the subjects listed in my profile, I will also teach 11+/common entrance, coding/game design, statistics and probability, film-making, creative writing, government and politics, economics.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient and I persevere. I am happy to tutor people across all ranges of ability but I expect you to work hard and follow my advice.

My tutoring includes:

- encouragement of free and critical thinking
- varying teaching methods depending on what the student is most receptive to including: problem based learning, discourse, traditional exercises, experiments, lectures
- exam preparation
- confidence building
- resolution of conceptual difficulties
- helping with homework
- homework marking
- undergraduate and postgraduate application advice
- coaching for Oxbridge entrance including the STEP papers
- interview advice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- email contact throughout the week to resolve your problems as an when they arise
- group tuition

Please note (a) while I am based in Hackney, I will cover all areas of London; (b) I can offer reductions for group sessions.

Personal Description:
Hello there, this is Clair here, I`m 24 and am currently undertaking a chemical research PHD in the field of materials chemistry at UCL. I graduated from my undergraduate Chemistry degree at UCL and prior to this I lived in Portsmouth having moved there from Malaysia when I was 13. This coming September I am in line to be secretary of the Chemical and Physical Society, UCL's oldest society.

Aside from Chemistry I am also like running, taking photographs, going to see art, films, music and learning more about the world around me e.g. economics, politics and sociology.

Teaching Experience:

In recent years I have been in junior schools working with children during their science practicals. I have also had regular work tutoring one to one and small groups of KS3-GCSE students and have also been called in to help particular A-level/BTEC science classes. At university I mentor to undergraduate students.

Tutoring Approach:

During our tutoring session we'll do the normal thing of going through past papers but also work hard at actual understanding of the concepts. With me you will be able to understand and enjoy complex scientific and mathematical ideas and consequently get the grades you want and deserve. Hopefully we can work together to make this happen.

Chemical Engineer, teacher and examiner, double graduate in Chemical and Process Engineering, holding tremendous experience in teaching and private tutoring.
Punctual, reliable, hardworking and extremely professional.

Teaching Experience:

Worked as a chemical engineer for 6 years before starting working as a teacher. Worked with many London schools and colleges for the last 8 years. Helped many students to fulfill their potential and assisted them to get into top UK universities, including Oxford University, Cambridge University and Imperial College of London.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an exceptional teacher who is driven and enthusiastic about teaching. I believe each student has their own way of learning and that teaching should be tailed to match individual needs and leaning styles. Not only does this keep the student interested but I have also found that this creates a desire to learn more about the subject. I believe patience is another key factor to teaching, and which is a skill that I see myself to possess. Moreover, identifying the key aspects of the subject which challenge the student followed by structured tutorials and innovative teaching methods helps students attain the highest grade.
For all students I will set work to be done in between each lesson in order to reach the student's maximum potential. I also monitor students regularly and give progress reports to the parent/guardian in due times.
If you prefer group tutoring I am running group classes in Dartford (closer to the Darent Vally Hospital). The class usually consists of 4-5 student for GCSE and A Levels. Personal Description:
Hello!

I have been told that I am an inspirational and motivating teacher. I love people and am passionate about my work which I manage to incorporate into an exciting yet balanced life. When not teaching I spend my time painting, singing, swimming, reading and travelling. My fourteen year old son, Charlie, attends our nearest Steiner school in Garlinge Green where he is very happy, I am delighted to say!

Teaching Experience:

I have been to Art College and also studied the four year BA in education at Christchurch in Canterbury, qualifying in 1994. I am therefore a qualified primary school teacher. I taught in several different primary schools before taking on a position as a drama teacher in a local secondary school. ( I have always been excited about all subjects and thus very happy to teach anything and everything!)

I was Head of Art at a local prep school for seven years, a super job, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have spent a few years teaching children with special needs which also gave me tremendous satisfaction, especially with regards to the social development of the children.

I am now working as a supply teacher as the flexibility suits my lifestyle perfectly.

Tutoring Approach:

Working with a person on a one to one basis is a luxury that has so many advantages. Unless, it has to be said, you are learning hockey skills, or something similar! Time is valuable and expensive, so, although relaxed, I am keenly aware that there is a lot of work that can be accomplished in one hour... the sense of satisfaction gained from work done, progression and obvious good results lead to a huge surge in confidence. It is my belief that it doesn't matter what area/field this is, only that it takes place, again, age is irrelevant too, five or fifty five, success is success and it makes us happy!

Personal Description:
My name is Annie and I am a nineteen year old student. I study French and Italian at University College London and am entering my second year. I have just received a high 2:1 in my end of year exams.

Teaching Experience:

As a language student I've done a lot of volunteering, mainly helping out in the younger years' language lessons at school doing oral and grammar work, but sometimes helping out my parents' friends' children in their preparation for GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm very enthusiastic about foreign languages and have knowledge of French, Italian and some German. I strongly believe that the world is only as big as the languages you speak! I'm very flexible with when and where lessons take place, though weekday evenings and weekends work best for me. I live in a maisonette in Camden with a light and spacious dining area where it will be possible to have lessons.
I'm prepared to tutor from complete beginner with no previous knowledge up to GCSE level. If you are a student at primary or secondary school, I'm happy to do lessons that help with your school work or target any specific weaknesses you feel you have. Alternatively, I'm also happy to decide what we cover myself. I'll teach oral/conversational classes, vocabulary and grammar.

Personal Description:
I am a native English speaker. I enjoy my work as a private ESL/ESOL tutor and teach at my home or student's home/workplace. I can teach one to one or small groups.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified English tutor holding a Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)
I have ten years experience teaching English in Further Education Colleges across Kent. I have also taught in English Summer Schools and accommodated students from abroad, in my own home, teaching them English and introducing them to English culture by taking them on excursions to places of interest in London and Kent.

Tutoring Approach:

During the first lesson I will assess my new student in order to place them at their correct level of English language acquisition. Thereafter, I can provide lessons appropriate to that level, taking into account their idividual learning needs and learning style.
I am very patient and aware of how it feels to be learning a foreign language as I have studied both German and Spanish as an adult. I like to ensure my students feel comfortable and at ease in their learning as I feel that they will progress more easily and quickly if they are confident that they will be encouraged and helped at all times along the way.

Personal Description:
Born in Edinburgh, I was raised in India and then Africa, before returning to the UK. Having lived in London and South East England since then, our family moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2012, primarily to raise our children in a less chaotic and more natural environment. We've had no regrets at all...and our various dogs and cats are similarly happy with the move!

I have always been passionate about English, from the weekly spelling tests and grammar exercises of primary school to the privilege of being taught at A Level by Tolkien's grandson. His vibrant, interactive approach shaped my ongoing learning and fired my imagination. After leaving Edinburgh University with a Masters in English Language and Literature, I went on to take a TEFL qualification and used this when travelling abroad in Turkey and throughout the Caribbean. I am delighted that I continue to work in the area of EAL with overseas students in British schools, and that technology has allowed me to work with individuals in their home countries, via Skype.

My love of English directed my career, working first at the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an independent theatre producer in London, and a theatre advertising executive on accounts such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats' and Cameron Mackintosh's 'Les Miserables'.

In 2008, my partner and I began the home education of our two children at primary stage. It was both challenging and inspirational and the experiences and knowledge I gained during those years - not purely academic, but also the different ways and methods of learning, the different developmental stages of children, the different learning styles of children - continue to inform my present day tutoring.

While home educating, and with my love of theatre, I founded an educational theatre group, Active Arts, with Margo Gunn, a teacher and director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. We worked with a wide age range of home educated and mainstream school children, providing workshops on various Shakespeare plays including 'Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Tempest' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Workshops were also designed specifically in support of GCSE/IGCSE work. As passionate advocates of Shakespeare, our approach was active and energetic, lifting Shakespeare off the page and introducing his plays, his language and his theatricality in an engaging and tangible manner. I was thrilled to be able to resurrect this work in the Highlands, initially at a local primary school, conducting 4 workshops for Primary 4-Primary 7, resulting in workshop presentations of 'The Tempest' and 'Macbeth'.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to home educating my two children and running Active Arts, my personal and professional lives led me into private tutoring and I have been a private tutor in English Language and Literature since 2009, working alongside children and young people from age 5 upwards, whether on general literacy issues, EAL or focusing specifically on exam work, from SATS, Nationals and GCSEs, through to A Levels, Highers and beyond. Tutees have been those in mainstream state schools, leading UK private schools and home education, following the English and Scottish curriculums, as well as IGCSEs with providers including Cambridge, OOL and Edexcel.

A number of my tutees have challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Tourette's and dyslexia, and the combination of experience, research and support courses have built my knowledge and understanding in these areas.

While I am registered with tutoring agencies, many of my tutees come via personal recommendation and I was delighted that tutees I had worked with in England chose to continue working with me via Skype after our move to Scotland.

Critically, I am PVG checked, and would be happy to provide evidence of this, together with references and qualification documentation.

Tutoring Approach:

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
My approach is not one of 'dip in and out' for an hour, or 'one size fits all', but of creating a relaxed, enjoyable, constructive atmosphere and building a relationship within which the young person's potential can be maximised, against a tailored, individual approach. While texts and challenges might be shared by various tutees, learning styles, atmospheres for learning, methods for learning, will always be different.
As importantly, my approach places great value on the parents, their involvement and their right and need for clear, ongoing and comprehensive communication. As such, I am often in regular contact with both my tutees and their parents, should they require it, outside of tutorials.

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited."
Plutarch

If you're looking for a desk-based tutor, one who does all the talking and expects your child to just sit and listen, I am not the right person for you.

If you're looking for someone to ignite a love of English, to build confidence, to be energetic, to make learning enjoyable, active, off the page, accessible, then, here I am!

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
For many young people with whom I work, English and everything to do with it - their texts, their homework, punctuation, close reading, writing an essay - is a minefield. Often, what holds them back is a mixture of low confidence, fear of getting it wrong, and simply not having grasped the 'map' of how to 'do it'.

One of my main motivations, is to make English accessible; to take away the fear factor, to provide clear and simple structures, to grasp some key exam techniques, to demystify the exam paper, to clarify what the heck the exam paper is testing them on; to remind tutees that they have, naturally, learned one of the most difficult languages in the world and are fully capable of expressing themselves on paper, under pressure and against time.

However whimsical it may sound, as with many things in life, self-belief and understanding are powerful tools for success.

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
The demand for private tutoring is growing exponentially. As The Telegraph reported in 2012, "more than a quarter of parents use private tutoring to supplement their children's education", spending "6bn a year in the UK." A double page spread in Femail, February 2015, states research that almost 1 in 4 children are now privately tutored, with pupils at private schools almost twice as likely to have private tutoring than those from state schools. Whatever explanation there is for this rise, cost to parents remains an obvious barrier to its provision.

I am, of course, a 'business', but I also firmly believe that access to tutoring should be made as wide as possible; education is a right and not a privilege. As such, while I have a standard rate for 1-1 tutoring, I am also very happy to discuss your requirements with you and to look at options available, such as small group tutoring where the cost per head can be significantly reduced.

Please do take the opportunity of discussing your requirements with me, rather than potentially losing the opportunity of providing tutorial support for your child.

Personal Description:
I am a tutor of maths and physics. I mostly teach A-level and university but sometimes I teach GCSE. This is done online via a virtual classroom (WizIQ). I have taught students between the ages of 15 and 26 from a wide range of backgrounds with a wide range of abilities and am fully CRB checked. Depending on the student's requirements, I can also teach introductory computer programming, specifically Python and Fortran.

I am based in the Coventry/Kenilworth area doing my PhD in Plasma Physics at Warwick University. Most my tutoring is done using the WizIQ virtual classroom and Skype. This means I can teach students anywhere in the country from anywhere in the world (and indeed I do). I can also offer face to face tutoring either at your home if you live within cycling distance of me, or on Saturdays in my office at the university of Warwick.

As well as my PhD studies, I am also working towards a post-graduate teaching qualification which I expect to obtain this year. It is worth a sixth of a masters degree, and will grant me associate fellow membership to the higher education academy.

In addition to this, I am also studying level one Japanese and have a fondness for languages in general.

Teaching Experience:

Testimonials:

Luke - I am thankful to Ben for always encouraging me to learn more and work hard! I used to be scared of taking a maths test but thanks to Ben I can take a test without worry. Ben is very good at explaining things when you don't understand them. In my opinion if you struggle with maths Ben is the best tutor to teach and support you!

Kathy - Having Ben as a tutor for my son gave him the confidence in this subject, and he was a completely different person when his GCSE came round. He now has a great attitude toward his Maths subject, and this was all down to Ben and his tutoring.

Dean - Ben was able to improve my mathematics skills in a short space of time when my job was overcasting my University work. He changed his schedule around me and tutored me late at night to get me through my exams. He has a solid understanding of mathematics and physics and importantly, he can break it down and make it easier to digest without hesitation. He has always gone the extra mile and I have started enjoying mathematics thanks to his tuition. Highly recommended.

Sanjay - I found Ben extremely proactive yet flexible and understanding at the same time. Authentic and genuine are some of the words that suitably describes Ben. All that with plenty of humour too makes Ben a highly desirable tutor!

Tutoring Approach:

I find teaching extremely enjoyable, not only is it very rewarding to see students make progress, but it also keeps me sharp when doing my own physics research! I like to be quite informal with my tutoring, as I find this helps to re-enforce the knowledge they have learned in the school classroom. I tutor at the pace the student requires, before each lesson starts I will have spoken with the student and decided what I'd like for them to achieve in the lesson. If the student should happen to struggle on a particular topic however, I would devote more time to that.

I have recently started to get involved tutoring students who would like to take their GCSE or A-level exams earlier, and have not yet been taught the subject/s in a classroom. My awareness of all GCSE and A-level syllabi makes this possible, as I can create detailed, structured learning programs to facilitate the student's independent learning.

I also have a wealth of experience teaching Maths and Physics to early year undergraduate university students, particularly those taking summer resit exams that are in need of a "crash course".

A detailed C.V and a scanned copy of my CRB certificate is available upon request.

I am looking to tutor throughout the summer holidays and potentially continue this into term-time whilst I am seeking full-time employment. I love helping young learners to find their passion for education and I will always adapt my teaching style to suit their individual needs. I am used to differentiating work to allow all children access to the curriculum and I aim to make learning as fun and engaging as possible.
My interests include travelling, arts and crafts, exercise/healthy living, baking, and learning new things! I am also a patient and caring person and I do not shy away from a challenge :)
