Personal Description:
APPOINTMENT SLOTS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE (as of March 2015):
Friday 7pm onwards and holiday times.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my sixth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last six years of 11 Plus entrance, including September 2014, 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Two out of three 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

Please be aware that I do charge for travelling over 30 miles (roundtrip: 15 miles each way):
30-40 mile roundtrip - £5
41-50 mile roundtrip - £10
51-60 mile roundtrip - £15
61-70 mile roundtrip - £20

Personal Description:
I am currently studying English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. I love reading, writing and reading some more. I also enjoy sketching while listening to music. I am a frank person, have an straightforward approach to everything in life and like people to behave the same way with me (which always does not happen). I love to have a laugh, but don't worry, I can be serious when needed( for example, when teaching your children English and History).

Teaching Experience:

While I have never tutored for money, I have an extensive tutoring experience. I volunteered to teach illiterate students English as a part of a volunteering program from my high school in India and have been a part of that program for the past two years. I also used to tutor my two siblings in History, Geography and English.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that children learn best in a stress free environment. If they feel it is fun and challenging, they will be more willing to learn than if they feel it to be an obligation. English is an easy subject and children enjoy learning it, once they realize the joys that English has to offer. History can be challenging due to the vast amounts one has to learn by heart but steady habit of writing down answers to questions helps more than reading the material ten times. Other than that, History is a vastly interesting subject which helps us understand the workings of the present society and of course, knowledge about our ancestors. Geography is relatively straightforward subject. A lot of practice and a dedicated perusal of it should be enough to get good scores. While it can be relatively dry, it can be made interesting with pictures and videos.I focus on exam technique, past papers as well as text work (English Lit.)

Personal Description:
I offer tuition in maths for all ages, up to and including Maths and Further Maths A-levels. I also offer coaching for Numeracy and Numerical Reasoning tests such as SHL recruitment selection tests. If you need a bit of extra help for an upcoming exam, or even if you are just keen to widen your skills base with some general functional mathematics coaching, I would be keen to help.

Teaching Experience:

I am a full-time maths teacher in the Nottinghamshire area with a number of years' experience both tutoring and teaching, and currently teaching all ages and abilities from year 7 to A-level Maths and Further Maths, including the new Further Maths Level 2 qualification which is an excellent bridge between top-end GCSE and the start of A-level Maths. I am a Maths graduate from the University of Warwick, and I hold a PGCE from Warwick Institute of Education. I have a full Enhanced Disclosure CRB.

Tutoring Approach:

I appreciate how difficult and disheartening it can be to struggle with maths, but I also believe that, when presented in the right way, it can be both interesting and enjoyable (as well as extremely useful!) I favour a student-driven style of tutoring, with an emphasis on finding the root causes of any difficulties in order to strengthen a base of understanding before jumping forward to new topics.

Personal Description:
Hi I'm Tom. I am 25 years of age and am a graduate from the University of Cambridge with a 2:1 degree in Natural Sciences in which I specialised in Chemistry and Mathematics.
Much like the 'supervision' style teaching of the University of Cambridge, I love to share my passion for problem solving with others on a one-to-one basis.
Outside of academia, my interests include Table Tennis and the Rubik's Cube.

Teaching Experience:

I have 3 years experience tutoring Mathematics and Chemistry at both GCSE and A-Level with students of all abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I understand that there is no one-size-fits-all method of teaching, and that often there are many correct explanations and solutions to problems.
Each person is different, so if one approach fails we will try again from a different angle to ensure a clear and lasting understanding.
I will aim to work towards the syllabus but am also willing to deviate slightly if the tutee would benefit from a wider understanding of the subject.
I am patient and strive to instil real enthusiasm and confidence in the subject for each student.

Personal Description:
I'm a certified teacher working as an online tutor for students in Norfolk and Suffolk. In university I had the opportunity to study a variety of subjects, including English, psychology, history and statistics. I'm able to tutor children, adolescents and adults in the following subjects and levels:

English/Literacy for Key Stages 1-3, GCSE and A-Level.
Maths for Key Stages 1-3.

Psychology (GCSE, A-Level and undergraduate)
History (KS3 and GCSE)

IT/Computing (Primary, KS3 & adults)
English as a Second Language (for adults)

Currently I offer all of my tuition online, mainly via Skype. I also make use of an online whiteboard for maths lessons, and occasionally for English grammar.

See the "Subject Taught" section below for rates per subject and level. Computing/IT and English as a Second Language for adults are set at a discounted rate.

Don`t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Teaching Experience:

In the UK, I have experience tutoring for two years in London, Surrey and East Anglia. I've also tutored students for four years across a number of Canadian universities, such as the University of Toronto.

Tutoring Approach:

For younger students, I assess them on their first appointment to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. I then focus the lessons on the areas they need improvement in, using an individualized approach that is suitable for that particular student. I also help students prepare for examinations, such as the GCSE; in this case I mostly focus on giving them tasks and questions that resemble what they will face on their tests.

For A-level and degree students, I'm usually asked to provide assistance with a specific task. For example, I've helped my students construct outlines in order to structure their essays, answer typical questions that will come up on their exams, and proof read their essays to check content, clarity and grammar. I can also clarify theories that are difficult to understand and help students generate ideas for their thesis.

Personal Description:
An aspiring civil engineering student, possessing mathematical knowledge that I can use to help younger students improve their mathematical skills.
During A-Levels I constantly attended 'King's Factor' through King's College London. Where we logically analyse and solve STEP and MAT questions. This programme gave me the chance to improve my problem solving and critical thinking skills.
I am self-motivated, committed and determined to achieving my goals, come what may. By being a current Vice President for two different organisations, I have demonstrated good negotiating and organising skills, a firm sense of responsibility and capacity to work harder under pressure.

During my free time I skate, play basketball & badminton. I used to play basketball for a team and won fair amount of games. I am also a passionate musician who play drums, guitar, piano, clarinet and saxophone decently. I like to learn new things that's why I self-taught myself in playing this instruments. In addition to this, currently I have my own band, who played on several gigs and even won as first runner up for battle of the bands. Lastly, I collect different kinds of rubik's cube and puzzle twist, all which I can solve.

Teaching Experience:

Currently working part-time Tutor at Kumon Sheperds Bush
• Understood the meaning of support and patience

Guitar Tutoring
• Learned how to break patterns into simple components for better understanding

Retail Store
• Developed, and enhanced skills in attention to detail

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst working as a tutor, I discovered that teaching is not just about the kid being able to memorise the content, equations and even techniques, but also being able to understand them fully and able to apply them at any problem they may come across with.

Hence, for me as a tutor, I make sure that the student understands the knowledge behind the equations they use to solve a certain problem. So in the future they will also know the logic behind a logic.

Because for me, Mathematics is not just about being able to know the answer, its also about the steps, techniques and knowledge used in attaining the correct answer.

Personal Description:
A resident of Edinburgh for the past twelve years I enjoy meeting new people and learning new things myself. I am fairly well travelled, enjoy the arts and have a passion for working alongside others to help them achieve their goals.

I am a professional actor with degree level qualifications in both Philosophy (Dundee University) and Acting (Queen Margaret University College).

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with adults in improving spoken and written English for UK degree entry level. I have also worked with college and university students in the Middle East (UAE) to train science and drama education in both Arabic and English.

For several years I have visited schools in both the public and private sectors delivering reading, drama and science communication classes.

I have regularly taught 5-15 years drama in private classes and enjoy working with pre-drama school entrants of all ages in working on giving the best entrance audition possible.

Tutoring Approach:

I am confident at creating a structured approach that works with a pupil's own strengths and needs to provide a tailor-made package for learning.

Ideally I meet with each student to discuss their learning needs, current level and expected outcomes.

Although it is important to push the boundaries of learning, it should always be a workload that is both manageable and individually tailored.

Personal Description:
I work as a Domestic Violence Support Worker and I currently volunteer with Sutton Black History Group and the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre. Through my studies I have deveoped excellent study skills and methods, as well as specialised knowledge in my subjects. I am very enthusiastic about education and I eventually plan to pursue a PhD.

Teaching Experience:

Having worked for Camp America in 2009 and a further four summers with an International Summer School in the UK, I have had a lot of experience in working with young people to teach, lead and motivate them or help to inspire them with projects. Similarly, at university I helped with the newer students in modules that they were unclear on. My roles on the boards of various student groups also provided me a platform to lead and teach newer members to the groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I am confident in communicating with others and it is important to me to work with empowerment and encouragement. Rather than telling the individual what to do or how to think, I work by presenting information and work through it with them, developing a way of working that is both unique and successful for each individual.

Personal Description:
I consider myself to be articulate, eloquent and competent in the field of literacy. I have a great love of the written word and all forms of creative writing. I am a firm believer that the use of comprehensively impeccable speech and literacy can substantially improve ones progression in any field, be it professional or personal. Mastering the use of the English language and being able to articulate ones thoughts via speech or written correspondence is an invaluable life skill. I have always loved to read, write and study all aspects of literature and media. I have spent time as a critic, a reviewer and a freelance writer, as I revel in any opportunity to write.

Teaching Experience:

I have privately tutored individuals who wished to improve their ability to write. I assisted in all manner of writing; for example, I tutored university students in writing papers, assessments, personal statements, Curriculum Vitae and course work. I taught students at GCSE, A Level and Primary level how to study literature, history and media and produce competent work for educational and personal use.

Tutoring Approach:

I would be forever grateful for the opportunity to share my love of the English language and help those struggling in the field, or wish to enhance their ability.

Personal Description:
I am a Spanish nurse currently working in UK and I would like to help with learning my language to who wants to (any age). I think it is the best way to learn the culture from each other and it is a useful way to spend my free time.
I like work with people and I think it could be a rewarding experience.

Teaching Experience:

I worked as tutor of biology for primary school childs when I was studying my nursing degree. It is my experience of teaching and working with childs.
It would be my first experience as language teacher.
For tutoring Adults I have not previous experience yet but I think it could be a great way to learn from each other and my work makes my feel confortable when working close and with people.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the best way to learn a language is to prepare some scenarios to talk about. I would Split each lesson in a first part of grammar and writting skills and a second one for speaking about prearranged topics.
All lessons or tutoring meetings can be online using Skype but I have no problem if we are meeting at my home.

Personal Description:
CIAO A TUTTI!

My name is Stefano, a Ph.D. student in Italian Studies at the University of Reading, where I have been teaching since 2014.

There is no age limit for learning ITALIAN!

Grazie e a presto,
Stefano

Teaching Experience:

I have been a part-time teacher at the University of Reading since 2014.

I have a good level of experience in teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

In Italy, I have taught on XIX and XX century Italian literature at the Università di Chieti and on Dante and Italian Philology at Salerno. Since moving to Reading, I have taught on literature and theatre as well as contemporary and modern European history. At Reading, I am also the leader of study sessions on feminism and fascism.

Here I am also a Study Skills Adviser.

You may also visit my academic profile (conferences, publications, translation, theatre at Reading) on academia.edu.

Tutoring Approach:

Interactivity and students' involvement are at the core of my teaching. My focus is on the creation of original learning activities.

I have always believed in teaching Italian language and culture in a more dynamic and informal way.

In Italy, I taught elocution classes and theatre for students of all ages. At Reading, I founded the 'Italian Theatrical Group' within the Department of Modern Languages to improve students' linguistic fluency and knowledge. I find extremely useful recording scripts and rehearsals to give students feedback as well as to encourage their creativity and self-correction.

My lessons are specifically tailored on students' needs, individual or groups, children or adults.

Thanks to my theatrical experience, my lessons for CHILDREN will include the use of 'puppets' and other activities to be decided time by time, according to the topic and tutees' needs.

For ADULTS: As well as standard lessons, I also offer to translate/proof-read Cv, COVER LETTERS, AND ANY OTHER DOCUMENT, CERTIFICATE OR CREATIVE WORK.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PRICE AND OFFERS, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Personal Description:
Дoбрoгo здoрoв'я! Здрaвствуйте!
I was born in a mixed family (my farther is Russian and mother is Ukrainian),so actually I am bilingual (Ukrainian and Russian are equally native languages for me). I am graduated philologist (BA).Always eager to develop and learn something new in my profession and personal life.Have essential tutor experience (have being taught Ukrainian, English, Russian for more than 8 years). I'm passionate about Art and Music and in my spare time enjoy painting and playing the piano. Also really like travelling and over the last few years I've been in the United States and almost all EU countries. I fluently speak English, Ukrainian and Russian languages, can almost easily understand Polish speech and communicate at a certain level.

Teaching Experience:

Business Leader June 2010 - Sept. 2012
School of foreign languages, Kyiv
English teacher
• Organising group and private lessons
• Managing timetable

Tutoring Approach:

I teach people according to their level, needs and individual preferences. The main thing at studying any language is, of course, speaking practice. So my question is what can be better and more effective than studying language and speaking practice with a native speaker? Think a little about it and call me then! ;)
