I am a 45 year old lady residing in Ashford, Kent. I originally come from Africa and have been in England for 10 years now. I trained as a primary school teacher but resigned after 16 years mainly because I wanted to travel and broaden my experiences. My hobbies are reading and writing (for leisure), travelling and sightseeing, aerobics and swimming. I could however easily call teaching one of my hobbies because I always find myself teaching people wherever I go!

Teaching Experience:

I was a primary school teacher for 16 years but I also did private tutoring as a sideline. I taught English to the age group 9-10years and outside working hours I taught adult literacy classes. I think I did well because I always found myself with so many private students to teach that sometimes it was hard to cope . All the same I enjoyed every minute of it. I have also recently qualified as an EFL teacher and am hoping to start soon.

Tutoring Approach:

When I meet a student for the first time I always believe in taking time to know them. By this I mean their well being and /or state of mind. For example, if a student has come to class only because someone has insisted, then learning will be a chore. Or if they have personal problems, or they are hungry, tired or ill then we will not get very far. So I will take a few minutes to chat and get to know their state of mind as well as reassure them before we start and if there is anything I can do to settle them then that is what I will do first. I am saying this with a view to teaching adults because that is what I hope to do. I also believe in teaching in a very relaxed environment that is conducive to learning so I always try and get rid of all distractions before we start. I have been known to be a good teacher and I hope I will continue with my good style and reputation.

Personal Description:

I have a long history of tutoring students since completing O Levels (GCSE) myself. I did my O Levels under the Cambridge International curriculum in July 2007 with 8As (including Mathematics & Additional Mathematics) and 1B. Tutoring Approach:

All subjects are taught through explanation, reasoning and home practices. Science is taught through understanding of the theory and practising problem solving while Mathematics is taught by showing the simple steps and with small tricks to remember the method or to remember common values such as sin 30=0.5. Primary English as a foreign language is taught through reading to expand vocabulary, writing to improve spelling and grammar as well as conversing to bring proficiency and comfort. After every session, the topic related exercises and homework are given for better understanding and to build student's confidence to solve any problem relating the topic.

I am a qualified teacher of Spanish and a native speaker of the language. For the last 23 years, I have taught Spanish at different Secondary schools in Kent. Personal Description:
I have been tutoring academic subjects for the last 6 years, whilst coaching/mentoring from the age of 18.

I have a long-standing interest in helping young people beyond just the curriculum and passing exams. I have a Masters in Positive Psychology from UEL, the 1st in Europe to offer the course and 2nd in the world. This new science focuses on building strengths, whilst promoting good well-being and helping to prevent mental ill health.

I have been lucky to have received some very kind references from tutees/parents I have worked with previously; you can take a look at these at the bottom of my profile if you wish.

Teaching Experience:

My core tutoring experience is focused around the individual Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), English and Mathematics, for both secondary school (up to GCSE-level) and primary school.

Beyond this, previous experience has also extended to:

- GCSE German
- Primary school - English
- Entrance examinations - for primary and second schools (including verbal & non-verbal reasoning)
- UCAS application forms, personal statements, job applications, CV writing, etcetera

(I also provided Tennis coaching at Summer camps, through Tennis England, from 2005 - 2007; this included both 1-to-1 and group lessons for children aged 4-15).

I will always be completely honest as to my capabilities/limitations, and will be advise accordingly in certain instances where I do not think I am best placed to help.

Tutoring Approach:

Every student has a different personality, and will have specific ways of learning suited to them. Recognising this, my approach is personalised, friendly and supportive, with the focus on getting the best for the individual student.

My approach is take on the combined role of a tutor and mentor, relating their academic goals to their own day-to-day lives as a whole, and future aspirations of the students that I work with - my four years working in the recruitment field also helps here.

As previously mentioned, I have a deep interest in mental health and wellbeing of students; simply put, the happiest students perform at their best. I feel that there is much value to be added here.

Furthermore, effectively "bridging the gap" as a key point of contact between the student & their respective parents/guardians is crucial; I liaise regularly with parents and guardians of my students, keeping them up-to-date with the tutoring sessions, and how best to encourage positive development of their child.

I am a divorcee with two teenagers and a rather loopy dog (all housetrained!) I discovered the joys of teaching as a parent helper at my children's Infant and Junior schools which inspired me to qualify as a Primary School teacher. Unfortunately I have developed arthritis in my knee which is why I am looking to continue my teaching in a non-school environment. My favourite academic subject is literacy because I love reading books by a wide range of authors, e.g. Austin and Dickens to J K Rowling and Jacqueline Wilson. I love creative crafts e.g. card making, cross stitch, scrapbooking etc. Music plays a big part in my life, including listening and making. I'm a bit of a diva on the recorder and can play the full range from Sopranino to Bass. I love to sing.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified Primary School Teacher who has worked in a number of schools in Essex in permanent, temporary and supply posts across both KS1 and KS2 over the last four years. My PGCE was obtained through School Centred Initial Teacher Training (which comprised spending a lot of time working directly with children). Prior to that I was a parent helper and governor for 5 years at my children's Infant and Junior Schools. I was Music Leader at my last school for two years and ran the choir. - Let's start with my teaching system.
I am familiar with tutoring face-to-face (6 years) and online (+3 years). I have been part of a research which involves language teaching and technology, and I am right now studying a Masters' Degree in Online Education and Virtual Course Design. I use a wide range of visual tools to make lessons more appealing (virtual whiteboard, Google Drive, etc.) and have a personal platform to connect all my students.

- How do I speak?
I have a language certificate for working in the media, so my diction and elocution skills are very good. In case you wondered, I have a clear standard accent from Spain (and an Occidental accent in Catalan).

- How am I going to make you improve your language skills?
Let me be honest: I am a language learner myself, so I know the key is practice, practice... and practice! But I have good news for you: I'm here to help you with it in the most fun possible way, without forgetting about the cultural aspect of the language. Of course we'll see grammar (it is necessary), but always in a very practical context and according to your needs.

- How about session types?
This is absolutely up to you! From exam preparation, grammar, writing and conversation to the most advanced rules of ortotypography (I am a proofreader). This is the good part of teaching one-to-one, that I can tailor my lessons to your needs and learning style. You set your goal, I design a specific lesson plan!

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching Spanish and Catalan for +3 years in a famous language platform. During this time, I have given more than 1000 online lessons to +180 students, with 100% attendance and positive feedback. References available upon request.

ACCENT REDUCTION
Do you have a special interest in perfecting your accent in Spanish? Do you want to roll your [r] like Spanish people do? To follow specific training on a certain sound? In my university research (2014) I have proved that it is possible to do so via Skype, and this is actually the field I specialise in. In this course, I will diagnose your speech, prepare individualised exercises tailored to your needs and create a path for you to follow in order to achieve your phonetic goals.

If you're curious about this type of training, I can provide the reference of one of my students, who trained very hard and in around 2 months was able to roll her [r], or another student, who could improve her prosody and expressivity in only two sessions. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I'm 17 years old and am a current student of the Sixth Form at St Bartholomew's School. The four subjects I'm currently taking are Maths, German, History and Politics. In my AS levels I received an A in all three subjects I took, including in Maths. I am a big sports fan and am known to often watch football games at Hungerford Town and Reading. Patience is key. Children and young teenagers, who may find maths difficult, can easily become frustrated. It's up to a tutor to let the child overcome their frustration by enabling them to solve complex problems and to make maths interesting. It's often challenging for children to use up their spare time for extra tutoring, so tutoring must be enjoyable and enlightening in equal measure.

Personal Description:
I am a current Psychology MSc student. I love learning, but I haven't always felt that way. I currently read one book a week, while not so long ago as a student I truly hated reading. I had a tough time with developing relevant skills, procrastination and a very limited mindset while studying for my A Levels. This resulted in many set backs, high stress and low motivation. However, I learned something that has completely transformed my life in every way. I am determined to share this with others, which is why I love working with young people.

While attempting to find a solution to my 'student problems' I developed a fascination with the human brain. I read extensively on the topics of psychology, neuroscience and learning. The knowledge and tools that I have discovered has helped me to overcome many issues that most students face daily.
