Teaching Experience:

I studied at Dundee College of Education where I gained a Diploma in Primary Education. This was a three year course. I then took another Certificate in Early Years. After leaving College, I taught in both the state and private primary sector. I left teaching to have my children and then to nurse my youngest child who was quite sick for a few years. Once his health was better, I started working as a tutor from home or going to the client's house to tutor. I now tutor seven days a week. I have experience in Maths, Language, Phonics and Grammar. I also tutor children in preparation for entrance exams in to the independent sector, which includes Verbal, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths, Language and Spelling. The children I have tutored have all had great success, many going forward for a scholarship.
I have an online Dyslexia touch type programme which has had tremendous success. Many children, with the school's permission , come to be tutored within school hours.

Tutoring Approach:

I always believe that the child should feel comfortable with the person they are being tutored by and build up a good relationship. Tutoring is not only about helping the child to succeed but also for them to gain confidence and self belief. I have various methods of tutoring from written work, reading and oral work. I also have a computer available where we can work from. eg online games After each lesson, I give the child homework to be completed for the next lesson.

Personal Description:
My name is Duncan. I completed a Physics/Maths Degree in 1995 before researching for a PhD which I completed in 1999. I then worked for a government research laboratory and then a top-rated university research department. I have since moved into teaching as I find it more rewarding than research.

Teaching Experience:

I am a self-employed Maths Tutor and it is my main income. For this reason I am continually developing new resources for my students and continually developing my coaching skills. I am not a classroom teacher... instead I am a specialist one-to-one coach which requires very different skills.

I have a number of regular slots for long-term students (most of which are usually taken at any one time) and some capacity for one-off sessions (or a short series of sessions). I run a special "Exam Diary" from April through to June with extra sessions available for people looking for help in the lead-up to the summer exams. My actual availability varies... please contact to find out more!

I have experience of tutoring for A-level, GCSE Higher, GCSE Foundation and 11+/13+ for Maths (including C1-4, M1, S1, etc.).

In Summer 2012 one student surprised their class by getting a good grade at C1 (unlike the rest of the class) because the teacher had not prepared them for unusual questions (but I had prepared my student)... another student was raised from a U to a C at AS Level... and another student has gone up two sets at school within less than 12 months... one student got an A* and made it to Cambridge... and another student made it to Canford with a special recommendation in their acceptance letter for their maths. I cannot guarantee this level of success but believe I offer a "unique, unfair advantage".

I am also happy to offer support for all science subjects up to GCSE level (and I can also offer Physics A-Level support to my regular students).

Limited help is available to university students. However, generally this is difficult because subjects become so varied at this level that it can be difficult for me to know exactly what your course is looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is three-fold...

First I aim to work on basic skills... these are the foundation of success in Mathematics. If you know how to do a really complicated question in A-Level Maths you can lose most of the points if you accidently do not rearrange the equation correctly at the start. This is really true.

Secondly I aim to work on topic-specific skills. I have customised worksheets (written by me) that include fake exam questions for most topics. For example, for C1, C2, C3 and C4 exams I have a set of questions for every topic that are not the same as previous questions in past papers... this is a significant advantage for my students as I have tried to anticipate likely questions that may come up that the examiners have not set in previous years.

Thirdly I will coach the individual student to better use their natural ability. This may mean boosting their confidence... it often (bizarrely) means lowering their confidence in their first answer (but increasing their understanding of how real mathematicians work) so they better double-check their answers as they go through and lose less marks in the exam. It may also mean developing memory tricks for key facts, approaches to understanding questions and some really nifty tricks for how to spot what the examiner is after.

I have taught in London for the past 10 years, whilst there I worked in Year 1, 3 and 6. I now work in a school in Winchester and am in Year 6. I lead English across the school and help to prepare the Year 6 pupils for the new and challenging in SATs for reading, grammar and maths. When tutoring I try to make it practical and fun. I look at what the pupil struggles with and why they are struggling with it and then I try to overcome their issues. I'm a qualified Adult Education Tutor.
I passed my City and Guilds course for the Teaching diploma in adult education in 1999 and have been teaching in the corporate sector, in the public sector and to private pupils since then.
Clients have included Volkswagen, Gmac, O2, Transence and Inspire Change. In the government sector I have taught for MK Council, Surrey County Council, The Foreign Office, and the Police.

Tutoring Approach:

I concentrate on speaking and listening with some reading in class. Writing tasks are set for homework. I always find out what it is that the pupil wants to concentrate on: it could be just listening with comprehension tasks or just grammar with gap fills. That way the courses may meet individual needs. I usually agree a course plan at the start so that the pupil knows what's coming next for each lesson and we can change it if necessary as we go along. I explain what we're going to do, we do some role plays, some listening tasks. We use material from Pasos A First Course in Spanish. For the listening there is box ticking or answers to comprehension questions. At the end of a 20 hour course the learner should be able to get by in a Spanish speaking country, as a visitor, in the topics covered.
I charge the basic rate per hour below plus a 1 surcharge per mile travelled.

Hello,

I obtained my law degree from Queen Mary University of London. Then I studied the Legal Practice Course as well as the MA (LPC with Business). Finally, I have completed my Bar Professional Training Course and I have been called to the Bar in July 2016 . I have been working at a law firm since then.

I am from Cyprus, thus I speak, write and read fluent Greek as well. Despite my country of origin, I have been living in UK for six years and I can confidently say that I am fluent in English. I have obtained 8 out of 9 in IELTS.

Despite my academic background, I always participate in various volunteering projects. I have worked in Ireland at Barretstown camp where I had to supervise children from all over the world. I have been a student adviser at the Legal Advice Clinic since 2014. I have been the student director in the call screening part of the Legal Advice Clinic since October 2015.

I am a really hard-working and organised person and this can be justified by the fact that while I was studying the BPTC and being a student adviser and student director, I have been working part time in a law firm.

Teaching Experience:

For the past five years, I have been tutoring students of various ages. I have worked with younger students up to the age of 18 by assisting them with their homework and their yearly exams. I have done a vast amount of work with pupils with self-esteem issues and challenging behaviour. In addition, working with gifted and talented students.

I have taught Drama to both GCSE and A-level students, I have supported students through course work and controlled assessment.

Media and English have been taught up to GCSE.

I am currently teaching English and Drama in a secondary school in Warwickshire.

Tutoring Approach:

To work with the student on identifying the areas in which their are struggling to reach their full potential and why. Whether it is because they are struggling to understand or they lack in confidence in the particular subject. I would then work with the student to build the gaps in their knowledge and build confidence through interactive and individual learning. A combination of both styles of learning secures knowledge and the belief that the student has the knowledge.

The students progression will be monitored through continual assessment.

The student will also be a part of self-assessment to recognise their own needs and development.

BSc, Microeconomics tuition with H. - I worked with H., a native English speaker understand the way to approach and revise for her micro-economics module. She requested one week of intense online tuition, albeit the exam was imminent in one month. H. has now successfully completed the module

BSc, Advanced Economics Subjects, Econometrics (essay based) with V. - I worked 2 and half months giving V. 2-5 hours of tuition every day to prepare for his exams and coursework. V. learning needs had to be tailored to his special needs: being a dyslexic student I had to stimulate his learning ability and memory skills using visual aids and ad hoc examples. MBA dissertation with H. - H. was a full-time working mum of two children with special needs and had very little time to complete her MBA dissertation which was due in two months when we started. BSc, Economic Development, Regulation, Business & Management with S. - I gave S. tutoring in three final year BSc subjects helping him increase his grades and better plan for his revision in order to use her time well.

PhD Management tutoring with K. - K. is one of my current tutees studying for a PhD in management. We have highly intellectual sessions on his research progress and he consults with me regularly on all aspects of his PhD studies.

Economic Development BSc exam preparation with J. - J. needed to discuss his understanding of the module to better prepare for his exam. He requested me to have regular questions and answers sessions one a week for two weeks with him so that any knowledge gaps could be filled. I am a recent Masters graduate from the London School of Economics. Having spent the last 5 years in higher education, I feel I have the right skills and knowledge to tutor students from all ages. I have been tutoring various 11+, GCSE, and A-Level students for the past 10 years, as well as running various economics workshops for the LSE.
