I have recently returned from two terms teaching Physics to A level at the British School Tennerife. This was a maternity cover and included setting up the practical exam for the students.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught science in secondary comprehensive state schools for over 20 years. Ages range from 11 to 18 mixed ability, teaching physics to A level. I am an assistant examiner working for Cambridge International and marking A level physics papers. Also moderating Physics A level coursework for Edexcel.

My name is Tiziana, I am a native Italian speaker and I was born and grow up in Grosseto (south of Tuscany). I am married to a university lecturer, with whom I have 2 children. I`ve been living in England for 5 years and now I live in Stotfold (Hitchin).
I studied at the University of Sienna (Italy) where I obtained my Master Degree in Law and qualifications to teach Italian to foreigners.
​In Italy I worked as a solicitor/barrister at first and then for ten years as Chief Police Officer.
Over the last 10 years, I have developed a passion for teaching Italian to foreigners. I already ran Italian language classes while in my native country, and when I came to England, I started to give Italian lessons on a one to one basis then and I run Italian courses in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
I give Italian lessons via Skype to some distant students and I really enjoy this way of teaching.
I am also running a fruitful Italian conversation class for intermediate every Monday evening in Stotfold (Hitchin).

THE PROPER ITALIAN - MY ITALIAN BACKGROUND​

In Italy we say "the pure Italian is the Tuscan Italian in a Roman mouth".
Italy is composed by a lot of regions and every region speaks a different Italian, with a different accent. North and South Italy speak a very strong dialect. Open or closed pronunciation of the vowels "O" and "E" and doubling consonants "R" and "T" are the most crucial issues.
Italian tutor's accent reflects on the students speaking. I can recognize previews teacher origin of my students only listening to them speaking. I spend a lot of time with my students adjusting their pronunciation.
I grew up in the south of Tuscany and I didn't have to make any effort to get rid of my accent just because I have never had one. Pay attention when you choose your Italian tutor abroad. If you want to learn a proper Italian go with one coming from Tuscany or Rome.

MY STUDENTS BUNCH

I have to deal with many different students every week. Most of my students are coming once a week. Some of them come twice.​ Almost all my students are adult learners.
Half of my students are beginners and they literally start with no Italian at all. The other half have an intermediate level and they want to improve their skills in speaking and grammar.
In my experience, after 1 year of lessons (coming once per week) a beginner advance to the intermediate level and is able to speak and understand most common Italian conversations. ​
My Italian lessons are tailored to students ability, skills and purpose.
I teach all levels of Italian and my teaching experience is quite varied and rich.
I have mature students registered for Master Degrees in Italy, businessmen interested in improving their business Italian, teenagers who are doing A-levels in Italian, children from families of Italian origin who don`t speak Italian at home and tourist who want to learn a Survival Italian to hold some common conversations during their holidays in Italy.

YOUR LESSON IS TAILORED ON YOU
Every Italian lesson is customized on student progress, purpose and needs. I offer a high level of flexibility in terms of timing as ​I am available to give out lessons every day from 8 am to 11 pm weekends included. If you can't have your lesson in the same day every week I can arrange your lessons time by time at your convenience.
Students receive all the stuff they need to study Italian (grammar, exercises, practice) in advance and there is a hard job behind that. If you study Italian with me you don't spend a penny to buy books, audio-videos or other stuff.

I offer a first free meeting to all the students, before starting any lesson, in order to assess their level of proficiency as a speaker of italian and understand their purposes in attending an italian course.

Tutoring Approach:

ITALIAN TUITION ONE-TO-ONE

I teach Italian by developing written materials according to an individual learner`s needs.
I use materials of different types in order to make each lesson interesting and beneficial, including videos from Italian websites, audio tracks, dictations and games.
Each lesson is usually divided into two sections: the first one is dedicated to study some new grammar and the rest of the lesson is focused on speaking, listening and comprehension exercises to help the student`s proficiency improving day by day.
An important component of my lesson is the "free conversation", where the students tells me what they have done in the last few days. Very useful are also my "driven conversations", based on newspapers articles or other writings, on different topics.
This way my students have the opportunity to learn about Italian culture, politics, food, traditions, history etc.
I always give all my students homework to be done independently.

LESSONS PRICES AND PAYMENT TERMS

I charge 18 per 1 hour lesson or 25 per 90 minutes lesson at my house.
I offer discounts for families and groups.
I prefer to be paid monthly in advance but if you struggle to pay monthly I can accept payment lesson by lesson.
If you can't attend a class, please advice 24 hours in advance and I will offer you to re-arrange your lesson for another day.
If you miss the lesson and you haven't canceled it in advance, you will be asked to pay for the missed lesson.
You can pay my lessons cash, via cheque, pay-pal or bank transfer.​ ​If you need a receipt for your payment, feel free to ask.
For lessons at your house I will ask you a petrol refund.

​CONVERSATION CLASS

An "Italian conversation class" is a valuable opportunity for Italian students to practice their spoken Italian within an informal, relaxing environment, in front of a cup of tea.
Each conversation class is organized with students who possess the same level of Italian, so that no student would feel embarrassed and the conversation can be useful to all.
The purpose of the conversation classes is to connect people who are studying or who would like to begin the study of Italian and want to practice and improve their skills acquired so far.
Each class is developed around a specific subject, easy to be addressed within a conversation: events, personal experiences, or topics, such as sports, cinema, history, hobbies, celebrations, holiday, etc..
We start from an Italian newspaper article or we comment texts about Italian history, art, traditions, culture, society and even food receipts. We watch Italian videos, we prepare together some Italian recipes and we play together some Italian table games which help everyone to practice Italian speaking. Sometimes we practice grammar trough some "grammar games" which turn the Conversation Class into a shared grammar lesson. I moderate the discussions and assures that every student takes part in the talking.
Conversation class takes place every Monday at 8:30 pm and it lasts for 1 hour.
The class is open to all. Most of the people coming to the class are my one-to-one students but some of them attend only the conversation class. You are free to attend the class whenever you want and you will be asked to pay 5,00 per class.

SURVIVAL ITALIAN COURSES FOR TOURISTS

Are you worried about your language skill during your planned holiday in Italy and you are thinking to learn the most common Italian phrases in order to express yourself and understand most important conversations? ​
​Unfortunately in Italy not so many people speak English and everything you will come across is written in Italian.
We have a different shopping and public service timing, different public transport rules, different emergency and hospital services and also different habits in hotels and restaurants, which can cause you some distress if you pump into a urgent situation and you are not confident with it.
​I offer some "SURVIVAL ITALIAN COURSES" for tourists.
They are specific courses, designed for touristic purpose. In a few weeks lessons you will be learning about dining out, shopping, renting a car, manage with trips and tickets without be fussed about the nightmare of the Italian grammar.
They are the only courses I set up completely in English, in order to speed up your Italian learning.
​These mini-courses are designed specifically for people who are planning a short trip to Italy and just need to learn some basic survival phrases in the minimum possible time.
2 different survival courses are available for you.
- 20 lessons survival course for 300
- 10 lessons survival course for 150
You can choose your timing lessons, having lesson once a week, twice a week or 3 times per week. Every lesson lasts 1 hour. I apply interesting discounts if you book one of the "Survival Italian Courses for tourist" together with your friend and special packet is available for you and your family!

ITALIAN LESSONS VIA SKYPE

Have you ever tried the enjoyable experience to have your lessons from home?​
​Maybe you would like to learn a survival Italian in order to hold some common conversation in your next planned holiday in Italy. Maybe you are able to understand some Italian but you don't feel confident in speaking and you would need to have some conversation classes with a native, experienced teacher. ​Maybe you work with Italian companies and you need to improve your business Italian.
​What ever is your purpose for learning Italian, you can have your lesson comfortably from home, saving you money for petrol and time driving.
​​Where ever you live, doesn't matter how far from me, you can have your lessons via Skype.
I have some distant students having lessons via Skype and they find this way of learning easy, cheap and comfortable, avoiding the stress of traveling and any petrol expenses.
You only need to have a computer, headphone and microphone and you are ready to start.
I offer a first free"Skype meeting" to the students, before starting lessons, in order to assess their level of proficiency as a speaker of Italian and understand their purposes in attending an Italian course.
I will prepare your lesson in advance (tailored on your purposes, needs and skills) and I will send you the lesson via email before the arranged lesson in order to allow you to print off all the stuff.
During the lesson you will follow my writing seeing me on your computer and listening to my voice. So, you will write grammar exercises, you will read texts and you will practice your speaking with conversation exercises exactly like in a normal face-to-face lesson. I often share my computer screen with you in order to watch some videos together and listen to some audio tracks.
In other words, Italian lessons via Skype are exactly the same lessons I have with students coming to my house.
My students really enjoy this way of learning and I am very pleased to teach Italian this way.

I am a twenty-one year old postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential and understand the tricky bits of their material which is escaping their understanding. I am a Canadian studying abroad here in Glasgow and therefore do not have GCSEs or A levels, but I have the equivalent levels from Canadian institutions with top marks. I tutor best in history, my chosen subject, English or French as a second language, and maths, which I not only did well in during secondary school, but all of which I have also studied at the University level. I have several years of teaching experience in different settings and with different age groups. By helping the student understand the material first and then explaining the method the teacher used to explain it first allows the student to reach their full potential, understand the material, and go back to class with a better chance following the teacher's instruction.

All of this is done in a light-mannered way that does not make the child feel as though tutoring is a punishment for not understanding in class, but rather, a (sometimes lengthy) temporary situation until the student becomes more confident about his or her own skills!

Using the student's own work is an important tool for helping them recognize their own areas of difficulty and should be used again as mock exams to help the student see tangible proof of their improvements. The best understanding of any subject comes from watching it being done/having it explained, doing it oneself, and then teaching it in turn.

My Teaching Experience dates back to my days as an A'Level student preparing for the GCE Cambridge A'Levels Exam in 2005. I made sure I carried all my colleagues along by conducting regular free tutorials.

When I got into the University, I continued. Every other evenings and every weekend, I would take part in tutorial sessions for my colleagues and sometimes for junior colleagues. This I did from 2006 to 2011.

In 2012, I registered as an Online-Tutor and have engaged a number of students in America and UK on mathematics and engineering related subjects. Not to mention that I have been involved in peer revision meetings all through my post graduate days at the University of Manchester where I took charge of conducting Mock Examinations.

To me, this has been fun.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is very very simple:

Step 1: Ask you what area you have problems with.
Step 2: Tell you to go on and teach me the aspects you know and even the aspects you do not know.
Step 3: I will take note of your strengths and weaknesses.
Step 4: Leave the rest to me, the tutorials would be worth the time and pay.

PS: Many times, from experience, students think they have problems with a topic, but all they have is just "no confidence about what they know". That is where we come in, to restore your confidence in the things you know and add to it. Hence, my best approach is to keep the interaction "both-ways".

Tutoring Approach:

Friendly and very encouraging. I have had experience giving remedial lessons to younger students falling a little behind at school and also to stronger students so can adapt approach well. One challenge is students who doubt their abilities or are afraid to get a question wrong. I constantly encourage that mistakes are okay, and they shouldn`t be afraid to tackle a difficult problem. I often find that it takes a lot of experimenting with stupid, less fruitful ideas in order to reach a brilliant one. Prompt when stuck and hold belief that it is the journey to solving the problem that is most important than the final answer and most fun of course :) Despite being guilty of not doing this many times in my young mathematical career- It is important to realise that Mathematics is not a spectator sport- much of learning comes from actively solving many problems and having bravery to explore the subject alone sometimes.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies depending on the student's needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don't lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students' homework for them!

I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student's understanding and technique. I also give a lot of emphasis to some of the less obvious but vital skills such as essay structure and technique, logical thought, and the effective use of numbers and graphs.

I believe passionately in the huge value of tutoring to students and take great satisfaction in seeing my students achieve their full potential.

I started teaching my peers while at Princeton University and have continued tutoring since moving back to the UK. Over the past three years I have taught students at various levels and abilities; from higher level GCSE to Further Mahs A-Level, as well as US university entrance exams (SAT and ACT).

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring approach is to teach a full understanding of the material, so that the student is able to engage with material in way that means they can tackle any problem. Often in higher level exams questions will have many topics layered on top of one another, so a deep level of understanding and an ability to apply mathematical methods is required. In my experience the best way to deal with this is for the student to not only know the methods, but also understand why they are being applied. I have also found that this understanding is difficult to grasp from a conventional classroom setting.

After this process I then turn to focus on exam technique specific to the exam board the student is testing through.
