Personal Description:
I'm a 28 year old aerospace engineer working for Rolls-Royce with a real passion for teaching. All my life I have loved helping others to learn (my little sister can vouch for that!), and maths was always my favourite class at school. I have a ridiculous amount of enthusiasm for the subject and love passing it on and infecting other with the love of maths (my friends, however, think I'm mad!). I think the thing I love most about teaching is the realisation; the point when the 'penny drops' and the student gets a thrill out of learning. This is why I love tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I've had quite a broad range of teaching experience - firstly, I am a semi-professional salsa dancing choreographer, performer and instructor. A little different from classroom mathematics, yes, but the teaching principles of patience and encouragement are the same in all fields.

I started tutoring when I was at university and a friend asked if I would help one of her year-11 friends with her maths, and I was happy to oblige. This experience made me realise that I not only did I really enjoy it, I was actually quite good at it. She took her maths GCSE and came out with an A grade - her expected grade 6 months earlier was a C.
This experience lead on to me tutoring a year 9 boy for a year. His mediocre grades were pulled up to level 7 - entry level for higher exam papers.

That was 6 years ago and since then I have tutored many students, usually about 3 per year for various periods. My level of expertise ranges from year 9 all the way up to year 13 in maths, and up to year 11 in physics. Although I LOVE physics, I wouldn't be comfortable teaching A-level - with one exception - Nuclear & Particle physics. This was always my speciality - so if you have a niche need, I would love to help!

Tutoring Approach:

I adore the subject matter. My students have told me that my enthusiasm not only comes across when I teach, it actually rubs off on them. I aim to make my students LOVE their subject!

I feel that the best way to encourage a maths or physics student is for them to feel that they are really achieving something. Firstly allow them to explore the problem and see if they can work it out for themselves, then drip-feed them the/a method so they don't feel like they are being spoon-fed. Extrinsic goals (doing it for someone else) are nowhere near as powerful as intrinsic goals (doing it because you want to) - my aim is to make the student find maths/physics - dare I say - fun(!). Once the student realises implications of what they are doing, and how important this esoteric language is to the world it really opens their eyes and makes them realise this is part of a thing much bigger than the problem in front of them.

Another quality that is absolutely paramount in a tutor is patience. Sometimes students just don't "get it". It's times like these that a tutor's mettle is really tested. I have learnt that a good technique is firstly to repeat what you have explained, as if it's the first time, and then repeat it again, but from another angle. Alternatively, moving on to something else and coming back to the problem helps some students. The important factor is to remain patient and relaxed at all times. Be on their side. If you get frustrated then the student gets frustrated, and then you've failed as a tutor.

Personal Description:
I'm a recent University of Glasgow Biochemistry and MSc International Project Management graduate. I'm a French national and have been living in the UK for 14 years. I'm a lovely person, very dynamic and love the one to one of tutoring. It makes me really happy to help someone achieve something they have worked so hard for.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately now for 7 years and have seen my students come to grow in confidence, in understanding and in knowledge of their chosen topics. I saw a girl who I tutored for 7 months go from getting an 'Unclassified grade' in her Biology AS Level to a B in her A2. I have never seen a student of mine's grades stay the same post-tutoring and I am very proud of that.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach tutoring different ways depending on who the student is. I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning.

I am an enthusiastic mathematician with an ability to communicate well. I have a first class degree in Maths and Chemistry. I would like to help students by either guiding and supporting them in their exam preparation or by developing their confidence and increasing their skillbase in maths.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working in a large comprehensive school in Leeds teaching 11-18yrs for the past seven years. I have experience of taking students through SATs, GCSEs, and A-Levels both in school and in private tuition with excellent results. In addition to this, I am an examiner for AQA and Edexcel exam boards, marking Alevel papers. As such, I am very well qualified to help students develop a more effective exam technique that maximises their marks.

Tutoring Approach:

I give one hour or two hour lessons which can either be in support of, and running along side, the student's school work or individually tailored lessons covering specific areas of weakness which students find particularly helpful in preparation for exams.

An experienced and friendly female tutor with many years experience of teaching mathematics at all levels and one to one tutoring with excellent results. I am an experienced and friendly maths tutor with many years experience of teaching mathematics at all levels (GCSE, HEFC, HN and A-Level) and private tutoring with excellent results. As an examination marker I have a good idea of what is expected in the final exams. In particular I use strategies to increase my students' confidence and learning skills so they become independent learners using their problem solving skills under exam condition. I endeavour to encourage my students to try and achieve to the best of their ability. I have a valid and current CRB certificate obtained by my employer

Teaching Experience:

Over 20 years of teaching, lecturing, one to one tutoring and many happy and successful students. Even those who did not really like maths in class, often stop me in the street comment on how much they have benefited from their mathematical learning, use it in their part time job or it has lead to a good career, or they are just happy to be able to do a monthly budget.
One of the signs of a good tuition is the returning customer and i have had the joy of teaching siblings from the same family for several years.

Tutoring Approach:

'There are two good things in life' according to S Poisson: 'learning maths and teaching maths'. Of course a little extreme, but i would say that enabling someone else to develop mathematical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as using and applying this ability to solve equations and carry out complex calculations, for me are some of the most exciting aspects of maths tutoring. The approach i incorporate into all my teaching is to enthuse, motivate and empower my students, so they develop a deep understanding of mathematical processes and thereby learn the skills needed for each particular topic. I also incorporate puzzles and interactive resources into my lessons.

Personal Description:
I am presently a teacher in the Muswell Hill area of North London and am extremely passionate about my profession. I obtained my teaching certificate through the Secondary Mathematics PGCE program at the University of London, Institute of Education in 2012, and have enjoyed great success during these first years as a teacher. Additionally, I hold a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from a top university in America, The University of North Carolina. I feel I have obtained a very strong subject knowledge in the field and look forward to sharing my knowledge and enlightening students.

Teaching Experience:

As previously stated, I presently am employed as a Secondary Mathematics Teacher in North London, where I am to begin my second year this fall. During my teacher training course, I was also fortunate to obtain experience in secondary schools in Chingford and Tottenham - which means I have worked with a very diverse group of pupils of all ages and abilities. I have spent more than 70 hours tutoring privately during these past 3 years in London and my pupils have achieved great success. Additionally, I have spent more than 60 hours volunteering in a maths tuition center in a local secondary school throughout my three and a half years in university.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe patience is one of the most prominent qualities in a successful teacher, and I think my aptitude to be patient will allow me to be an effective tutor for children of all ages. I understand that each student learns differently and works at a different pace, and I will cater my tutoring style to each individual.

Personal Description:
I am currently an undergraduate at Cambridge University entering my fourth year of natural sciences and taking courses in Theoretical and experimental physics. I have a broad interest in all the sciences and Maths.

Teaching Experience:

I am tutoring on a regular basis at present. During term time I tutor a nine year old maths to GCSE standard, a fifteen year old who I teach a mixture of all sciences and some maths, and a fourteen year old boy.. I have assisted in primary schools and have taught lessons at secondary level so have experience with young children. I often tutor friends at GCSE and A-level in the run up to exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I have gained immense pleasure from the tutorial system at Cambridge. Not only is it an enjoyable way to learn but the way I am taught has given me a very good understanding of the basic ideas behind a concept which are then built upon. My approach to tutoring is similar in that I hope to give the student the ability to step back from a problem and understand the theories behind it. This is particularly important for Maths and Physics but I find it is also very useful in aiding understanding in Chemistry and Biology. Equally, I am very flexible and often it is the case, especially with GCSE and A level sciences that it is specific methods which must be honed and understood.

I do not believe in simply telling a student what to do. Instead getting them to think for themselves, prompting them when necessary allows them to go away and follow similar lines of thought to solve different problems. It also teaches students to be more independent and not seek assistance for every problem they are faced with.

Personal Description:
I am a teacher with over thirty years' classroom experience in both Primary and Secondary schools. I have taught in UK state schools as well as overseas.

Throughout my years in schools both home and abroad I have tutored Primary, Secondary and Adult students as a vocation as well as to supplement my income.

Teaching Experience:

My experience includes 12 years teaching English and History to GCSE and A level in the UK secondary system and eight years teaching the same subjects to the same levels in international schools in Italy, Egypt and Kenya.

During this time I have always had a number of students on my books for home tuition to provide extra help in Primary, Secondary and University level subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

In my long experience of tutoring I have seen the benefits in aptitude and confidence that pupils can gain from one-to-one tuition. In the unique one-to-one situation the teacher can inspire pupils to begin at last to see the relevance of subjects they find difficult to grasp in a high-pressure environment like school.

Once the pupil sees the need to master the subject I take them on to the next stage where they can undertake tasks which build up their confidence. It is also a means for me to ascertain what the pupil's strengths are and to build on them.

The next stage is the slightly more painful one of identifying weaknesses and gauging the pupil's awareness of them and motivation to put them right. Once the student and I have agreed which areas need improvement we use lesson time to extend competence and skills by undertaking thinking and written assignments that allow the student to develop these.

Any homework set will advance and reinforce the skills the pupil has been encouraged to bring to the lesson.

I am a (young!) 50 year old woman and my degree is in Mathematics. I am, at present, working part-time in a school judged to be outstanding by OFSTED.

Personal Description:
I am a second year undergraduate at Cambridge University (Christ's College) studying English Literature. At a world class university I have developed the ability to rigorously analyse language and the historical contexts that affect it: I am confident I can pass on these skills to the pupils I take on.

I am hugely passionate about literature of all periods and believe that sharing this excitement is essential for helping people learn effectively. I am lucky enough to have studied at first class institutes where my tutors had a genuine love for their subject and this has led me to, first hand, understand its importance and incorporate it into my teaching.

I excelled at both GCSE and A-Level English and scored full marks in my AS level examinations. Moreover, as I have, relatively recently, sat those examinations I have a practical and up-date understanding of the pressures and standards of current examinations and how to shine when sitting them.

Aside from my studies I am a very keen guitarist- I am currently working on my diploma- and lead a band, which gigs regularly, at university. I am also a passionate sports player interested in tennis, football, running, and windsurfing.

If you have any questions at all please feel free to send me an email.

Teaching Experience:

I have vast experience within teaching English and developing lesson plans: I worked at a school in Uganda teaching English to classes of up to 25 pupils. As the pupils ages varied from young boys to adults I am also confident tutoring all age groups. I also volunteered at a primary school in Highgate helping teachers supervise large classes of young children. Similarly, I have experience in tutoring one-on-one and, as my mother also tutors children, have helped her discuss how best to teach children.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in having engaging yet vigorous lessons and strive at all times to try and keep the pupils interested. Likewise, experience within sport, and in a band, has taught me the value of motivation and encouragement and I strive to utilise this within my lessons.

I am extremely organised, track the pupil's work and always have lesson plans in place. As such, I will always check when I first take on a pupil what their end goal is so we can effectively work towards it from day one. Ideally, I would like to be given examples of pupil's written work so I can assess their strengths and weaknesses.

I took all essay subjects at A level and regard writing them as a major strength of my academic work. It is surprising how poorly structured and written most GCSE, and even A-Level, essays are and I will teach students the fundamentals of writing essays, including introductions, conclusions, and topic sentences, to help maximise their marks.
