I am a mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. I am familiar with many aspects of secondary education through my daughter, who has recently completed her A levels at Hills Road 6th form college, and a son at secondary school. My daughter has just begun reading PPE at at Oriel College Oxford. I am currently working at the Dept. of Engineering, University of Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Mathematics and Physics, to undergraduates from a wide variety of disciplines. I have particular experience of teaching Mathematics to people whose primary interests lie in Business studies and in Engineering. I also gained valuable insight into adult education when I taught adult part-time students.
I have also provided tutorials for students with many different requirements including A level and undergraduate Physics & Mathematics courses and, for example, GMAT Mathematics prep for MBA entrance exams.
Recently I have had the opportunity to tutor intensively for STEP tests and this has become a personal interest -there is always a new challenge, and the examiners are skilled at finding new ways to test the same knowledge level.

Tutoring Approach:

The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

Independently I have worked as an artist on a variety of projects, workshops and exhibitions. I have also worked within school and university art departments.

I have studied within the arts for six years. I have a First Class Fine Art Degree (Hons) and have also studied Art Foundation and Photography BETC.

Personal Description:
I am currently a First year student of the University of Nottingham studying Finance, Accounting and Management.

I am a very enthusiastic teacher who loves to share knowledge with other people and also love learning myself.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored both Maths and English to students in Manchester Academy, in both cases students made excellent progress.

I have also tutored all 3 sciences, Maths and English to 2 children between 2013 and 2015 as well as helping one of the students with her 11+ entrance exams.

Last year I tutored another 2 children, teaching GCSE maths and science.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe 1 to 1 teaching is the best form of teaching you can provide as the child can ask as many questions without fear and also you can work on a more personal level, compared with teaching around 30 children. I like this because I can then tailor the teaching to the child so they can learn in a way that suits them, for example, if the child learns through visuals I may draw many diagrams so explain points.

I have a degree in Tourism and also studied English philology and teaching English as a foreign language.

Currently I work in a legal department, where I focus on providing training to law firms, barristers and law students.

One of my biggest passions are languages. I studied French, Spanish, Latin, Portuguese and Japanese, just to name a few.
I think that given the right approach, you can truly enjoy studying a language and it can be (and SHOULD be) a fun and exciting experience.

Teaching Experience:

I taught English as a Second Language for 2 years in a private school.
My one-to-one language tutoring includes teaching: English, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese.

I have been teaching on and off for about 10 years.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is very modern. I am a firm believer that the right environment and teaching style have massive impact on the learning curve.
I tailor sessions to fit individual's needs, I make sure that they get the most of the time spent during the class and that they engage throughout.
Some of the techniques I use focus around: mnemonic techniques (how to best remember AND retain the knowledge utilizing associations), pragmatic tools (being able to recognize the goal and tapping into the value of the information attained), removing the unnecessary clutter of teaching techniques that do not work for an individual.

Following the completion of my A-Levels in Maths, Physics and Music I undertook an undergraduate degree in Music, as a part of which I was required to also study Maths during my first year. I have been playing Trumpet and Cornet for over 30 years now and have been teaching both Brass and Music Theory for the last 18 years. I regularly submit students for ABRSM exams and to date I maintain an exceedingly good pass rate for all my pupils who decide to undertake Grade examinations in both their instruments and Music Theory. I strongly encourage my pupils to undertake study of Music Theory as part of their lessons alongside their Practical Study, as experience has shown many students attain Grade V ABRSM with no substantial previous knowledge of this area.
As Grade V Theory is a requirement of the ABRSM before a student can be entered for a Grade VI examination on their instrument I feel that teaching the Theory alongside their instrumental studies assists in minimising the delay before a student can proceed to the higher examinations if they so wish. Further to this I believe it also allows them a better understanding of the music they are striving to perform. While I encourage my students to take the Grade examinations as a mark of their progress I am also happy to work with students who do not wish to undertake the pressures of certification but just wish to learn to play or improve their playing ability for their own enjoyment.

Personal Description:
Hi! My name is Jay.

I'm 24. Earlier this year I returned from a year teaching in Japan, I am originally from Bedford.

I am currently studying for a masters of research in 'Stem Cells, Development and Regenerative Medicine' at the University of Southampton.

I also hold an undergraduate degree in 'Human Physiology' from the University of Liverpool.

I have been invested in the scientific field since I was very young and I have found that my passion for the field comes across in my tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

My first experience of tutoring was a 6-month period volunteering in a middle school in Bedford town (2014)

I then moved to Japan to teach English as a second language in Mimasaka city where I learnt a great deal about teaching in classes of 3 to 43 students.

Upon returning to England earlier this year, I was employed as a student support in a college in Bedford working with disadvantaged and disabled students both 1 on 1 and in small groups.

Before beginning University, I was a team leader with the National Citizenship Service where I helped a group of 15 students complete a dynamic course including everything from adventure activities to carrying out a fundraising project for charity.

I will soon begin volunteering with a mentoring/tutoring charity in Southampton for disadvantaged students.

I have a wide range of experiences working with students from different backgrounds inside and out of the education system. I have attained high qualifications in every subject I tutor and I believe I can both discuss and demonstrate the merits of hard work and education with students who require motivation.

Tutoring Approach:

After much experience in various areas of the education sector, I strongly believe that learning through discussion and questioning is the most effective way to understand the fundamentals of science and improve in this field. Developing a deep interest in science this way can greatly improve a student's confidence and understanding. I can also provide help in exam theory to ensure students won't lose marks through misunderstandings in what is required when answering modern day exam questions.
