I grew up in the UK and then worked in Indonesia for 10 years, teaching Indonesian scholars on pre-departure academic programs. I also taught cross-cultural and study skills courses. After Indonesia, I moved to Australia, where I worked at two universities in Brisbane, the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology. More recently I have worked on Exeter and Bath University's pre-sessional program. I'm a friendly, kind and patient person with a good sense of humour and I love teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 20 years, mainly in the UK, Australia and Indonesia. I have experience working with English language learners at all levels and particularly at the university level. I can prepare students before their academic study or can assist them when they have already started university.
I am also very experienced in exam preparation. Most of my work has been on IELTS preparation courses (I used to be an IELTS examiner) but also on FCE preparation programs. I currently teach students in groups and one-to-one and I am available for Skype classes.

I think it's important to listen to students and identify their individual needs. I try and see them as they are, without judgment and I also encourage them to see the facts about their language learning, rather than their opinions. Many students say they are 'bad students' and this does not help their learning. So I show them a different path where they can look at the specifics of what they are doing and how they can improve their skills step by step. This makes them feel better about themselves and their studies. It also gives them responsibility for their own learning.
I also bring humour into the classroom as I feel laughter is very important to the learning process. Some students have said that my classes are 'like being in a family' and I think that's a lovely compliment.

Undergraduate studies:

I spent the third year of my studies living in Damascus, Syria, and speak the Syrian dialect, as well as having a solid grounding in Modern Standard grammar. A-levels:

Teaching Experience:

In addition to tutoring family friends in Italy over the summer holidays (in English), I've exchanged English and Spanish lessons for Arabic lessons. I also taught English to two groups of 20+ Arab teenagers at a high school in Israel from September - December 2012.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in cultivating a vigorous work ethic in students, which is best done through close supervision and encouragement. The work covered will involve both the curriculum required by the student's course as well as helpful extras tailored to the student's abilities and personality. I will provide these extras to increase the student's understanding of the subject and help him/or her reach a standard of excellence that will be noticed by teachers and examiners alike.

I find the most common problem students have is not with the subject itself, but with the teacher or the insufficient attention they get in the classroom. A stress-free but diligent approach will allow us to build trust, which will give the student renewed confidence in his or her abilities. Students who push themselves with me will be rewarded for their hard work by realising that the subject they once dreaded is actually really enjoyable when approached from a new angle.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is that I tailor my tuition to the needs of the student. I will tutor in the student's home or on their place of work. I will vary my style depending on the ability and needs of the student. I aim to run my tuition in support of the progression of my students through their subject syllabus, but I am also willing to progress more slowly and focus on particularly weak areas if the student so desires.

Personal Description:
I am 59 years old and retired from full time teaching in August 2014 after a teaching career of some 23 years. From September 2014 I have taught on a part time basis at Oldham Sixth Forn College. I am married with 3 children and live in the Chorley area. I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1979 with a degree in Construction Management and spent the first 12 years of my working life in the construction industry. I began teaching at Stockport College in 1991 and gained a P.G.C.E. in Secondary Maths shortly afterwards, I started at Oldham Sixth Form College in May 2003.

Teaching Experience:

I taught at Stockport College for 11 years and have just retired from Oldham Sixth Form College after almost 13 years there. I have taught a broad range of maths courses during that time and was course leader for level 2 maths at O.S.F.C. for 8 years before my semi-retirement. I have taught G.C.S.E maths for many years and have considerable experience teaching C1, C2 C3, C4 S1, S2 and D1 as part of A' level mathematics. I am familiar with both the Edexcel and AQA Gcse and A level specifications.
I have been an examiner for AQA at G.C.S.E. and am currently an examiner for The Cambridge Board marking the IGCSE and also for Edexcel marking C1 and C3, I have therefore lots of exam board experience and have many tips for maximising marks to pass on.
For students starting A level maths I have lots of bridging resources to enable students to make a seamless transition to advanced level study.

Tutoring Approach:

I pride myself on my friendly and personable approach to tutoring endeavouring to remove the impression that maths is too hard that has grown up in the media in recent times. References are available from my past and current students.

Personal Description:
I'm 49 years old and I've worked with children and young people in various settings since I was a teenager myself. This includes youth camps/expeditions for children from deprived backgrounds and musical evenings in half-way houses for young people with emotional problems. I've also worked full-time for 17 years with children with learning difficulties, Autism, and challenging behaviour in both special schools and in a community outreach role.

I have recently graduated with first class honours in Geoscience, and I'm very interested in science in general, ever keen to learn more about the world/universe from a rational perspective. I love to travel, combining meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures, along with new environments, different animals and different rocks! I also love music and to play the piano, guitar and ukulele.

I am positive, calm, patient, adaptable and responsive to individual needs and enjoy supporting people to overcome their challenges.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to my youth work experience, I lived in Seville for nearly 3 years, teaching English as a foreign language, mainly to young adults in a language school and in 1:1 private tutoring. Within my experience in special schools I have taught pupils on a one to one basis and taken small groups.

Personal Description:
I am a third year medical student at Imperial College London. I am very approachable and patient when it comes to working with kids. Having only just left school and achieved excellent results in both GCSE's and A-levels, I know what it requires to bring the best out of a pupil, and that with hard work and the belief that you can do well, that anyone can go on to achieve their ambitions exceptional grades. Having also only recently entered medical school, I understand their requirements extremely well, and can assist with UKCAT (my score: 740) and BMAT (My score: 6.7, 6.5, 4A) revision as well as working on interview and the UCAS application.

Teaching Experience:

Having recently been recruited by keystone tutors, I have had some extra training with regards to the different approaches with different pupils. Since joining university, I am now assisting 8 students with their studies, all of varying levels and take pride in watching them improve over the past few months. The age group varies from doing the 11+ test all the way up to A-level sciences and maths. Having helped a couple of them with GCSE's last year, they improved from a C to an A in their sciences and achieved A*s in Maths. During my A-levels, I was biology and maths prefect, so every week I would run drop-in clinics for year 10 pupils to help with areas they didn't quite understand. Having had some very influential teachers throughout secondary school, I tried to emulate them when tutoring these students. I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-to-one session can be and look to bring the best out of the pupils.

With regards to medicine, I was president of Medic Society during my last year, which involved informing pupils in the younger years about the application process as well as giving them interview and UCAS application preparation. They all found it incredibly useful and have all received offers from medical schools since.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching style is based around this motto. My sessions are as interactive as possible, explaining complex ideas in inspiring and interesting ways, making it simple to understand. I believe in setting a good base on which to build upon and then tackling exam questions and focusing on exam technique. Nothing is easy and I do expect the child to work hard in order to understand certain aspects, at the same time I am not stern.

Something I certainly found extremely confidence-building was learning beyond the restrictions of the course guide so that I walked into the exam hall relaxed, knowing that I had excess knowledge, and that the examiners could throw any question at me. It will also help the child's understanding if they do intend to carry on the subject.

Of course I would not pile on too much information if the child does feel he/she is struggling, and would work at a pace they feel is comfortable.
Most important thing though, above all else, is to have fun and enjoy what you are learning.

For potential medicine students, I can provide tips and questions for BMAT and UKCAT practice. There are certain tips that are effective which I can provide. Along with this, I can prepare you for the various different university interviews, having experienced all of the ones which I applied for; Cambridge, Imperial College, St Andrews and Aberdeen. Another important field is the personal statement and I can help to improve it as well as relay it to other contacts I have to proof read it and offer constructive criticism.

Following the completion of my A-Levels in Maths, Physics and Music I undertook an undergraduate degree in Music, as a part of which I was required to also study Maths during my first year. I have been playing Trumpet and Cornet for over 30 years now and have been teaching both Brass and Music Theory for the last 18 years. I regularly submit students for ABRSM exams and to date I maintain an exceedingly good pass rate for all my pupils who decide to undertake Grade examinations in both their instruments and Music Theory. I strongly encourage my pupils to undertake study of Music Theory as part of their lessons alongside their Practical Study, as experience has shown many students attain Grade V ABRSM with no substantial previous knowledge of this area.
As Grade V Theory is a requirement of the ABRSM before a student can be entered for a Grade VI examination on their instrument I feel that teaching the Theory alongside their instrumental studies assists in minimising the delay before a student can proceed to the higher examinations if they so wish. Further to this I believe it also allows them a better understanding of the music they are striving to perform. While I encourage my students to take the Grade examinations as a mark of their progress I am also happy to work with students who do not wish to undertake the pressures of certification but just wish to learn to play or improve their playing ability for their own enjoyment.

I want to be a part of making students love studying English as much as I do.
I am currently studying an English Literature degree as a mature student. I have a current DBS (previously CRB) certificate issued February 2017.
I am a patient, friendly and hardworking person and like to use my knowledge to help others. There is nothing more satisfying to me than knowing I have taught someone new way of understanding.
After graduating from my degree I will be going on to teach English at Secondary level.

Teaching Experience:

I have lots of experience working in schools, providing reading and writing support to primary level students and English GCSE work and revision support to secondary level students, as before going back to university I was working as a Teaching Assistant.
I also have a lot of experience working with SEN students, most of my experience working with students with Autism. I have an understanding of P levels that some SEN children may be working towards rather than following the national curriculum.
