Personal Description:
I am a 2:1 graduate with a good grounding in both the arts and sciences, as I studied English, German, Maths and Physics at A-level, before gaining my BA in Architecture from UCA - University for the Creative Arts (formerly the Kent Institute of Art & Design). I now work as a freelance Sinhalese interpreter and Buddhist teacher / meditation group leader. In my spare time I'm an amateur singer-songwriter.

Teaching Experience:

I currently teach adults early Buddhist philosophy, as well as how to meditate. I have also led occasional meditation groups for primary school children as part of their Religious Education lessons, and have tutored children to improve their Maths ability for their 11+ exam.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm always friendly and encouraging, and am good at helping students understand concepts by using examples, illustrations and provoking discussion. Several adults who I teach Buddhism and meditation to are foreign nationals with poor English; so I communicate clearly, using stories and anecdotes, with lots of eye contact, facial expressions and hand gestures to get my message across.

Come to a session with an area you want to go over, a topic you don't understand or just some homework that you don't get. I promise you that no question will ever be too stupid, no matter how many times you think you have asked it before. We will go over it until we find a way that makes sense to you.

When you don't understand a topic, it is usually because there are some gaps in your knowledge further back - especially in subjects like maths and science. Teaching Experience:

I have taught English and English Literature for over 25 years in both state and independent schools to a wide range of pupils, from the very high achieving to the less able.

At A level I have taught English Literature, English Language, and English Language/Literature.

I have been Head of English for 18 years in two schools (one of which has been one of most successful comprehensive schools in the country) for a number of years. My departments have always been the most successful or among the most successful departments.

My teaching career has involved teaching and tutoring pupils and students of all ages and abilities from year 3 to degree level.

Over a period of three years three of my pupils - from over 350,000 candidates in each year - were awarded the highest marks in the AQA GCSE English and Literature examinations, .

My department received an award for the highest performing A level girls nationally.

My GCSE results for have been consistently better than predictions by between a half a grade and a grade.

I have had similar success with A level.

My classes' National Curriculum levels are usually a level or more better than predictions.

I have successfully coached primary age pupils for entry to public schools and selective state schools, including Eton, Oundle, Magdalen College School, King`s Peterborough and Bourne Grammar. I have many years of tutoring experience.

Tutoring Approach:

Since every student is an individual with their own range of skills and knowledge, I tailor my teaching to their needs. Accordingly, I select from a range of traditional and more informal methods to suit the individual.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified Teacher / Lecturer, and have taught Biology and Chemistry for over thirty years in Secondary, and Further/Higher Education in the US, the EU, and the UK. I have taught the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and the International Baccalaureate specifications.

In addition to teaching students, I have trained teachers, as well.

Tutoring Approach:

While my Bachelor's Degree is in Biology and Chemistry, my Master's Degree is in Education with emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction, which means I have trained in designing and delivering effective lesson plans, as well as a complete curriculum. I design my instruction taking into account the student's learning style. The 'one size fits all' type of teaching is responsible for the failure of many students. Every student can learn and can do well, provided the teaching style accommodates the student's learning style, and there are no 'gaps' in what is prerequisite knowledge for taking a certain course.

Knowledge builds on pre-existing knowledge. I make certain that my students really understand and appreciate that. I diagnose any 'gaps' in content knowledge that my students may have, and I 'fill' them, providing a solid foundation for my students to build on.

Study skills, which figure prominently in my teaching, and exam technique, along with a well-rounded, in-depth knowledge of content, provide the key to success.

At the end of the course, my students not only do they have what they need to tackle the Biology or Chemistry Exam, but also a wealth of learning skills which they can apply to other subjects as well, and which they will find essential in all their future academic studies.

Educational technology supplements my instruction. The content in every session is presented on PowerPoint with quality images. I clarify every point and make certain my student has 'grasped' the present concept before I proceed with the next. Where appropriate, the PPT presentation is followed by a brief video which makes the content 'come alive'. My PowerPoint presentations, as well as my notes on PDF or Word files are available for my students after the lesson.

I finish the lesson practicing exam - style questions. It goes without saying that regular revision is important, and I provide my students with lots of past exam papers.

From 2011 to 2016 I worked as a lecturer at the University of Westminster, receiving a prize for my efforts having been nominated by my students for teaching excellence.

I also have an excellent academic record, completing my PhD at the University of Westminster in 2016. Prior to this I studied politics, sociology and philosophy at the University of York and the University of Leeds. At Leeds I received a prize for the highest mark in my graduate year at Leeds and I was awarded scholarships to fund my studies at York and Westminster.

I have successfully completed my PGCE course (Secondary Mathematics) at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2011. Prior to this, I hold a combined degree in Pure Mathematics and Statistics. I have also been on a number of courses covering behaviour management, AFL, pace in teaching/learning and differentiation.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experiences began at Woodlands School and Seven Kings High School, as part of my PGCE training and I had the opportunity to teach across the full ability range of year 7 to 11. I also fully participated in helping pupils in the Statistics and pure Mathematics AS Level classes. I finished my most recently teaching practice at Woodlands School where I taught maths across range and the use of ICT interactive board for maths lessons. My teaching practice was encouraging because I enjoyed interacting with students at various levels. During my teaching practice, I planned my lessons to very good standard and appropriate and challenging learning objectives which include a variety of activities and assessment techniques. I have gained a lot of experience from especially the one to one and that modified my teaching of low ability classes, concentrating on breaking tasks and making lessons interesting enough to lengthen student's concentration.

Tutoring Approach:

Having had the opportunity to teach across board for this while had provided me with a wide knowledge base for my professional conduct as a teacher. I constantly upgrade my teaching methods through evaluations and feedbacks I get from pupils and sometimes through learning walks by SLTs. I am confident I have acquired a lot strategies and methodologies for teaching all topics to all years and sets. I thoroughly prepared each lesson taking into consideration previous knowledge and suitability of the time it's taught. I recorded all homework and some important class exercise which are used to monitor children's progress and to find ways of how to address any inconsistencies. I have often liaised with parents if I needed parental support. For bottom sets, I learned the importance of the use of pictures and visual stimulus to meet pupils' learning needs. I have mastered the art of breaking up lessons into chunks to make it simpler for pupils to follow and finding straight steps pupils can easily grasp with complex topics. This has been one of my enviable achievements as it has always interested my maths colleagues. Concerning year sevens and lower forms, I learnt a lot about the importance of giving rewards in the form of stamps, commendations and stickers as motivation. Every learning has been thoroughly planned using Maths Framework Standards with levels and differentiation. For bottom sets working in partnership with support staff for SEN and EAL pupils has been very enjoyable and rewarding.
The opportunity to be a year 10 and during my last term a year 7 form tutor as well as the homework club tutor at Woodlands School had also given me a strong knowledge base on the pastoral care of students and participations in extracurricular duties.
Commitment
I am committed to developing my professional skills in all aspects of the art of teaching. I look upon my students not merely as students in the strict sense of the word, but also as an extension of myself. I want them to succeed, because when they do I also succeed.

I received private drum tuition myself for a number of years from an excellent educator. I have been teaching drums to young children, teenagers and adults for over 4 years. I have taught classes at professional music schools, and provided one to one tuition as well. I have lots of experience reading and writing drum music, have been a professional musician for 10 years, and love it!

Tutoring Approach:

I have a thorough and practical approach to teaching. I believe in my students setting their own goals (with some suggestions from me), whilst encouraging and equipping them to achieve their best. I use a very down to earth and open approach to education. I hope to develop an excellent rapport with any student, so they can share their own goals and musical aspirations, so we can work together to achieve them. I teach students of all ages and abilities, including those with SEN (special educational needs). In a classroom situation, on a one to one basis or as part of a small group.

I have extensive knowledge of the curriculum taught in years 7-11 and excellent resources, including past exam papers.

Teaching Experience:

I teach GCSE Maths to students who need extra help to reach their targets, this can be in a classroom situation or as part of a small group.
I also run intervention groups in tutor time and after school that offer extra help to GCSE students before their exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I get a great deal of a satisfaction from working with students and helping them become more confident in a subject they quite often dislike because they find it difficult.
I have a very calm and patient manner as I want to build a good relationship with my students and for them to feel relaxed.
After assessing the student I set realistic goals for them so they feel they are achieving, each student is different and learns at a different rate, the important thing is for them to make the progress they are capable of.

After approaching my student on her/his chosen areas of focus (GCSE pupils can expect to improve their writing skills as much as or even more than their speaking skills, while professional people may prefer to be more at ease first with their conversational skills) I try and devise lesson plans that are well-focused and engaging.

Teaching Experience:

Between 1992 & 2010 I lived and taught in Hong Kong to a variety of students from Chinese medium of instruction (CMI), English medium of instruction (EMI) and International schools to help them develop the four English language skills. Assistance was given to help students progress towards their HKCEE (GCSE equivalent)and `A` levels, and in recent years the IB diploma, IGCSE's, and HKDSE.

Topics used in the lessons cover many of disciplines in the school curriculum, including, History, Geography, Economics, Biology, English Literature. Further guidance was given to help students prepare for exams, such as, Cambridge`s KET and PET; the SAT; and IELTS exams and common apps for HE.

In the past six years I have been tutoring students in the UK to prepare them for the 11+ and 13+ entrance exams; teaching students at KS3, GCSE and A levels. Throughout my university life it has always been encouraged to teach our peers through case based learning and PowerPoint presentations. Therefore I have taught to individuals, but also to small groups and even whole classrooms. On the other end of the scale, I have tutored Maths to a year 6 pupil that was struggling to make the grades in this one subject, and by the end of the year she was competing with top of the class. I have also taught English in Asia to students aged 4-18. I have also been part of a University society which aids in teaching medicine to younger people hoping to take such a career path later on in life.

Tutoring Approach:

Having tutored people as young as key stage 2, I am able to adapt to the needs of the Tutee and instead of enforcing my learning techniques upon a person; I gauge the needs and learning styles of the individual which allows them to develop their own skills whilst trying new ones. Personally, I like the use of short, concise notes (flash card style) and colourful posters which enable me to visualise my notes in an exam. However, I understand this is not suitable for all people and would be more than happy for tutee's to make extensive notes. Having performed research and undertaking multiple entrance exams (GAMSAT, UKCAT) I have learnt to quick read which I can also teach. I can also help with University style interviews (especially medicine) if necessary. My teaching style is very informal (within reason) as I believe that strict lessons can often be counterproductive.

Hello! I am an undergraudate student at the University of St Andrews reading Modern History and Psychology. I'm Italian but speak English fluently as I attended an International high school. Learning languages is very important in my family: my father speaks 7 languages fluently, so there was also competition between my sister to see who could learn the most! I speak English and Italian fluently, as well as Spanish. I'm quite confident in speaking French too (although I may be slightly out of practice!). I'm currently learning Arabic and Russian with the University. I took Biology for A-Level, as well as Histroy, Spanish and French.

Teaching Experience:

While at school, I founded a Student Tutoring system, where A-Level students would spend an hour after school tutoring GCSE students in specific subjects. This was very successful; the GCSE students who attended our weekly tutoring sessions achieved (on average) GCSEs two grades higher than their predicted grades.

Tutoring Approach:

During my first lesson with any new tutee, I will test them to identify the way in which they learn best.
Many students believe that the only way to learn a subject is to read and reread their textbooks. While this technique may work for some, it's completely ineffective for most.
For example, I realised that the best way I learn is by teaching the material to someone else who has no knowledge of the subject. Others may find that mindmaps and flash cards help them best, while others still find watching YouTube videos to work.
Each student is completely unique in the way they learn, and my teaching style will reflect that. I keep notes on each tutee, in order to identify any patterns in their learning. This will help me structure each session so that the student gets the most out of it.
