Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

When I'm not acting or tutoring I can be found in the kitchen or walking in the countryside.

Anytiime Tuesday except 3.45-7.30pm

Anytime Fridays except 3.45-4.45pm

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor since 2008.

Currently tutoring students in: 8+, 10+ & 11+ preparation (all four subjects); GCSE Maths.

Previously: English - KS1, KS2, 7+ (Successful entry to Highgate), 11+ (Successful entry to Haberdashers' Askes Boys and Emmanuel), A Level (A at A Level English and Extended English). Maths - KS1, KS2, 7+, 11+, GCSE (grade improved from D to A*). University application assistance (Successful entry to Durham and Oxford). English as a foreign language.

During my gap year I spent some time as a special needs classroom assistant, working closely with a child suffering with Asperger's Syndrome. This involved facilitating the social and academic change between primary and secondary education on a one-to-one basis.

Also at this time I ran Welsh language games sessions for primary children in non-first-language schools to improve and encourage their use of the language outside of the classroom environment.

Whilst at secondary school I taught reading skills to children who had low reading-ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material to build students' confidence. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative and effective approaches to study, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

I particularly enjoy tutoring Maths GCSE, 11+ and 13+.

Previous Students' Comments:

'Before I met Alex, as a dyslexic, I was academically unconfident and dreaded having tutors who had never really helped me before. Alex tutored me from Year 8 to 11 and she completely changed my attitude to studying, helped me develop my organisational skills and gave me a huge amount of confidence in my abilities. As I approached GCSEs she tutored me particularly in Maths where I was struggling with a D grade. Without her expert tuition I doubt I would have been able to achieve my A* in Maths.

I think Alex is an amazing tutor because she has an extraordinary talent for making it a thoroughly enjoyable experience to the extent I would genuinely look forward to our lessons. Alex was far more than a tutor to me, helping me through such formative teenage years. I consider her a friend.'

- Tally (Now studying for her A Levels)

'Alex is a truly outstanding and gifted tutor as well as a fantastic person. I have very much enjoyed being her student for over six months, and have not only learnt a lot due to her expertise and impressive knowledge but also grew to love English Literature because of the inspirational nature of her tutoring. Previously, I used to constantly struggle with my assignments since English is not my first language, however, after a few weeks of sessions with Alex my grades and confidence significantly improved. She has an ability to keep the lessons varied and interesting; always well prepared for lessons - she was kind enough to provide me with extremely useful books and personal notes. Her incredible dedication and hard working nature also deserves mentioning as she was willing to help me even in the evenings when I was panicking about coursework and the approaching exams. With Alex's assistance and firm confidence in my ability I have achieved a high A in my A-level English Literature and even a merit award in Extended English. I would enthusiastically recommend Alex to anyone who wants to succeed in their exams and learn heaps of interesting information.

Personal Description:
My name is Chris and I specialise in preparing students for both the 11+ entrance exams and A-level chemistry exams. Until January 2011, I was a Science Teacher at Plymstock School in Plymouth where I had been the Head of Chemistry for 10 years. Previously I had worked at Kelly College Independent School as a Chemistry Teacher and the Head of Lower School Science. Since January 2011, I have been self employed as both a Professional Tutor and also a Professional Drummer! I love both aspects of my self-employment and look forward to helping many more students achieve exam success.

Teaching Experience:

Chris has been teaching and tutoring A-level chemistry since 1994 and as an ex-Head of Chemistry who has worked in both state schools and private schools, he has helped countless students achieve the high grades they often need for university entrance. Many of my ex-students have gone on to vet school, medical school and Ox-bridge.

Chris has also been teaching Key Stage 3 since 1994 and has a good understanding of the level of written work and mathmatical ability expected of the most able Year 7 students when they begin Secondary School. He has helped countless students to achieve their potential throughout Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 and earlier in his career he was employed as Head of Lower School Science at Kelly College Independent School in Tavistock, Devon.

Chris has a boy and a girl who have both been through the 11+ process and so is well aware of the stresses and benefits that all families are likely to experience, if they are to apply to a selective school.

Chris has an up to date fully enhanced CRB check and also public liability insurance.
You can also find him on the internet listed with various other agencies.

Grammar school education is really rewarding for able students and I hope to get the
chance to show you what the schools are looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

CHEMISTRY
I use boardworks PowerPoints to aid understanding but try to focus the learning around past paper questions and answers as much as possible.
I have handwritten answers to AQA, OCR-A and OCR-Salters past papers which are scanned in to the computer for projection onto a smart board.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified, approachable and professional tutor with nine years teaching experience. I am friendly, reliable, patient and I believe in building a student's confidence to help them achieve their potential.

I graduated at the University of Liverpool and achieved a Masters Degree in Chemistry with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I then completed my teacher training at the University of Nottingham, before going on to work full time as a secondary school teacher.

Teaching Experience:

For the last nine years I have taught:

- Combined Science to Key Stage 3 (in a secondary school environment)
- Biology and Chemistry to GCSE and A Level (in a secondary school environment)
- A range of examination boards, including AQA, OCR, Edexcel and also the IGCSE qualification
- In both a comprehensive and an independent school
- One-to-one private tutoring sessions to students finding Biology, Chemistry and Science difficult
- One-to-one private tutoring sessions to students needing to achieve the highest grades in A Level Biology and Chemistry for entry into Medicine and Oxbridge

As well as teaching and private tutoring I also work as an Examiner so I have an additional insight into exam preparation.

My role as a teacher in an independent school also involves marking entry examinations, so I am able to prepare students for these exams.

During my industrial placement year at university I worked as a Research Scientist for GlaxoSmithKline, applying Biology and Chemistry to researching new pharmaceuticals. I frequently draw on this experience to stretch and challenge students needing to achieve the highest grades for University entry.

Tutoring Approach:

I thoroughly enjoy motivating my students and I have built a variety of teaching resources to help students of all abilities. My students tell me that I help them break down complex information into more manageable sections. As well as preparing students for examinations I try to inspire them to enjoy and apply their subjects beyond the focus of exams. I strongly believe that learning should be enjoyable and accessible to everyone.

I understand how daunting it can be for parents and students to begin tuition so I am more than happy for parents to stay during my lessons. I can provide references and testimonials from my previous students and the schools I have worked for, as well as an enhanced CRB check. I am happy to set homework, mark examination papers and give detailed feedback, as well as organise additional lessons during examination periods.

Personal Description:
Hi there,

Whether you just need just some extra help for exams or need that A in GCSE's or A-Level I'd love to help you.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching for 5 years in West London. 6 months in Midde East teaching. Experience teaching across KS3, KS4 and KS5.

Tutoring Approach:

From teaching experience I know what the main misconceptions are and use this to base my teaching on. So before we begin a topic I try to tease out any difficulties a student may have and go forward. For me building confidence in maths is one of the main building blocks to helping a student improve substantially.

Personal Description:
I am currently a Civil Engineer working for Atkins Global, having graduated from Imperial College London. Having studied through all levels of school I can appreciate how useful having a source of targeted teaching is, this is the service I hope to provide. Having participated in youth organisations and group bursary projects I have had the opportunity to work with people from many different backgrounds and cultures, this allows me to tailor to individuals. I am a STEMNET ambassador for which I volunteer in various schools and teach pupils how to apply classroom knowledge to real world scenarios. I play hockey in my spare time as well as recreationally painting to focus my time on activities outside of work.

Teaching Experience:

I am a STEMNET ambassador. For this role I work with young students in interactive workshops to engage them in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
I was enrolled in a mentoring scheme in university, for which I was assigned multiple students. I provided guidance with work and general university issues.
During my time at secondary school and sixth form, I worked in sessions with younger students during which time we would cover material which they were struggling with.
Participated in a youth organisation, BSS Shaka, for which in my role as a senior member would organise and run weekly workshops which focused upon cultural learning as well as sporting activities.

Tutoring Approach:

Methods for teaching are subject to the individual therefore I strive to find a method which worst best for both parties. Aside from teaching the core syllabus I also would like to know what you struggle with such that more emphasis can be put upon that. I prefer to set up a dialog with my students such that the teaching is more interactive. I will prepare a lesson plan, and set students questions to work on between sessions; anything which they are unsure of can be covered in the next session.

Personal Description:
I was born in France and lived there for 25 years before moving to England where I completed a postgraduate diploma and subsequently worked as a civil servant. This is also when I met my husband.

Following the birth of my children in 2001, 2003 and 2006, I left my demanding job and got involved at first in French groups for pre-school children before starting tutoring students for French GCSE.

As I am helping at my children's primary school, I hold a current CRB check.

Teaching Experience:

After teaching beginners French to young children for a few years, I now specialise in tutoring students at GCSE. I am fully conversant with the GCSE syllabus and it is currently, by choice, my sole area of tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I begin first by assessing the student's strengths and weaknesses. I have a flexible approach and will base the lessons/exercises around the current topics covered at school (i.e.: environment, education etc) using my own materials. I retain a strong focus on the different exams (oral, writing, listening) required throughout the year for French GCSE, and provide mock exam practice for my students.

Personal Description:
I am a Physics graduate and trainee Science teacher with over four years of tutoring experience and a brilliant track record.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked at two different Tuition Centres where I offered individual and group tutoring sessions in Mathematics and Physics from Primary to A Level standard. I have covered the vast majority of the exam boards for GCSE and A Level on numerous occasions and I have had the pleasure of helping students achieve their potential.

I am very flexible in my tutoring approach - I tailer my lessons based on what suits YOU.

I am very happy to answer any questions you may have. Please get in touch.

Tutoring Approach:

The most important thing is to ensure the tutee is comfortable with the approach. I do not have one particular approach but adapt my tutoring sessions in a way to suit the student.

Whereas I understand the importance of exams and will often stress this, I find it more useful to to engage with the tutee in a way which would result in them loving the subject. This will encourage and motivate them to work further.

Personal Description:
Having always taken academic learning seriously myself, I am keen to help others do the same. My 12 A* GCSEs led to A* A* A* A grades at A Level, and now I'm studying towards a French degree at Oxford University. I am a very capable linguist, whose knowledge has a particular depth to it, having studied French, German, Latin and English Literature at A Level. This level of expertise stems from a natural love for these subjects, and this passion is a great asset for a tutor to have.

Teaching Experience:

I have assisted Key Stage 4 lessons at Chesterton Community College, taking small groups aside to help them with grammar and speaking tasks.

Tutoring Approach:

As I teach, I am able to focus on the exact components of the subject which it is necessary to know for the examination being taken, so that everything I teach is of the utmost relevance. Having been through the same exams I will be teaching, I will make it clear exactly how to excel. This practical approach is nonetheless accompanied by the natural enthusiasm which I have for these subjects.
As an Oxford University student, I am also well-equipped to shed light on the Oxbridge application process, as well as the application process for Hills Road Sixth Form College, which is where I took my A Levels.

Personal Description:
I am a mathematics teacher with eight years experience mainly at A level. However since 1993 when I began post graduate study at UCL I have always tutored at least one student either at degree level or at A level.Since 1993 I have lived and worked in London but in 2008 I also worked at the University of Warwick near Coventry for 18 months on a research fellowship. I enjoy teaching students whose main interest is mathematics and would like to pursue their studies in mathematics at a top University such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, or Warwick. I have taught students who have gained entry to these institutions.

Teaching Experience:

PGCE in secondary mathematics at Goldsmiths College, University of London, 1999. Following this I taught undergraduate problems classes at LSE in 2000. In 2001 I taught for one year at Yesoday Hatorah school in Stamford Hill and was responsible for all mathematics teaching to GCSE level. From 2002 to 2008 I taught mainly A level at Ealing Independent College . I returned to teaching at Ealing Independent College in 2012 to 2014 after a break working in Coventry.

Tutoring Approach:

Getting to know the student's strengths and weaknesses. Much checking of understanding which is the main advantage of tutoring. Helping the student to plan learning for examinations. Plenty of opportunity to work through past examination papers to improve performance.

Personal Description:
Hello, my name is Luis. I am a PhD candidate at the University of Aberdeen working on oil spills in the deep sea. I am from Spain and I am very passionate about academia and learning in general.

My background is on oceanography, where I have covered ecology (biology), ocean dynamics and sediment geochemistry (chemistry). Data interpreting is part of my research work and it involves statistics of academic level and mathematical modelling.

I collaborated with AU Science Magazine writing blog posts and editing articles. I am currently involved in a Research Development initiative to create a collaborative framework within the University of Aberdeen for researchers and students alike.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a demonstrator at the University of Aberdeen since October 2014, where I assist in the following courses in two Schools:

School of Biological Sciences:
- Oceans and Society (SX1015)
- Animal Population Ecology (ZO3307)
- Ecology and Environmental Science (BI1511)

College of Natural and Computing Sciences:
- Chemistry for the Life Sciences (CM1020)
- Chemistry for the Physical Sciences (CM1021)

I have ample tutoring experience from when I was at University in Spain and I continue tutoring to this day in Aberdeen (+6 years). I have long-distance students whom I tutor via Skype. I was also a collaborating student at University in Spain where I prepared practical work for students.

Tutoring Approach:

Where students find difficulties I like to break down concepts into simpler pieces that then assemble to represent the entire idea. I also think it is important to let the pupil know the purpose of these concepts in a wider context so that they can appreciate the value of learning the contents of the course.

Finally, I am an advocate of enjoying learning and always endeavour to make lessons as fun and interactive as possible.

Personal Description:
I have always had a very approachable manner as a teacher as I have always believed that this is the best way to relax a pupil and make their mind more pliable to different approaches. I fully understand that mathematics can be a challenge, and this I believe is where my very patient and empathetic demeanour can produce results quickly and restore a pupil's self-belief. I am thorough in my preparation, professional in my presentation of written materials, and prompt and comprehensive with marking. I will be reliable, wholly courteous, and totally focused on the pupil's development.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a qualified teacher since 2006. From 2005 to 2012 I taught at Swansea College (now, Gower College Swansea) on a range of programmes including BTEC courses, GCSE and A-level Mathematics. While at Swansea College I continued tutoring mathematics privately, building my knowledge of the demands of Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, and developing a range of strategies to effectively teach those specifications.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe that mathematics is based on a number of core principles, and success in mathematics depends on a concrete understanding of these principles rather than rote learning of topics. My private tutoring sessions are always designed around the effective delivery of these principles. I am always flexible in my approach, and I understnd that a pupil's attention may be distracted by something that they remember they have covered in a formal lesson. However, my commitment to ensuring that the principles are understood will not change. My lessons last for 1 hour and 20 minutes, and incorporate a 5-minute introduction to the objectives for that session, 1 full hour of teaching and a 15-minute review at the end.

Personal Description:
I am a practising barrister in Belfast with a background in French Law and European Studies. As a practising barrister I have a wide range of legal experience across a number of sectors including Land Law, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Family Law and of course European Law. I lived in France for a year and completed a specialised Diploma in European Law. I can converse fluently in French and I have an excellent knowledge of written French and French Grammar.

I have bases in Ballymena and Belfast and my practice as a barrister takes me to all parts of the country. As a result, I am available to travel to a range of destinations. Please do get in contact to determine whether I can be of assistance.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent many years teaching a wide range of people from very young children to adults.I tutor 2-3 times weekly in addition to my practice as a barrister and find that my practical knowledge is of a huge assistance to all my pupils in assisting them to reach their maximum potential.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach each pupil differently according to their personality, skill set and ability to progress. I find that generally no two pupils are the same therefore one-to-one tutoring invariable yields the best possible results. However I demand absolute commitment from each pupil and expect everyone to fulfil their potential, regardless of their age or experience.

As i have a wealth of practical knowledge, I find I can easily distill difficult concepts for students who are struggling with confusing legalese and complex academic arguments. I can help with assignments, practice papers, model answers, tutorials and more difficult concepts that arise in lectures.

Personal Description:
My name is Davínia and I am a Spanish language assistant (MLA) in Aberdeenshire. I am from Alicante (Spain) and I am a native bilingual speaker of Spanish and Catalan. Moreover, I have the C2-Proficiency level of English (certified by Cambridge University).

Regarding my qualifications, I am a fully-qualified teacher of English as a foreign language in Spain since I have the equivalent title to the PGCE by the University of Alicante (Spain). I have also certificates by the University of Alicante, the International University Menéndez Pelayo and the Pennsylvania State University that show my experience and knowledge teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

Previously, I gained my M.A. in Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition in Multilingual Contexts at the Universitat de Barcelona. Here I developed my knowledge about bilingual and multilingual education and societies, Sociolinguistics, languages in contact, methodology and statistics. Moreover, I specialized in Educational Sociolinguistics with my M.A. Thesis "From Primary to Secondary School: a Case Study of Changes in Language Attitudes among Students of the Bilingual Programs in Alacant". Results and conclusions of this M.A. Thesis have been presented in several international congresses (AESLA, 1st International Congress on Bilingual Education at the University of Cordoba, XVI International Congress from the Spanish Society of Language and Literatura Didactics among others).

I also received graduate education in Hispanic Linguistics at the Pennsylvania State University (PA, USA) where I learned everything related to Phonology, Syntax and First Language Acquisition. Finally, I got my BA in English Philology at the University of Alicante (Spain) majoring in Linguistics and Catalan.

In my free time, I love swimming, watching TV shows and films as well as going to the theatre to enjoy plays and musicals.

Availability:
Tuesday from 8am until 12pm.
Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm until 8pm.
Friday from 2pm until 8pm.
Saturday and Sunday from 8am until 8pm.
I am willing to travel around Aberdeen city and the surrounding areas of Cults, Peterculter and Banchory.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently working as a Spanish language assistant at two high schools in Aberdeenshire (Scotland) and I am also in charged of the Spanish Club for the staff members of one of the high schools.

I also worked as a teacher or English as a foreign language at the private academy Climbing English Centre (Alicante) where I gained experience teaching English to people of any age range: from babies who were 2 years old up to elderly people who were 60/70 going through teenagers who were between 13 up to 18 years old or adults trying to get official certificates from Cambridge University and TRINITY. I also offered private lessons to students in primary, secondary and post-secondary education.

Moreover, as part of my teaching qualification, I did my internship of teaching English as a foreign language ate the bilingual state high school IES San Vicente (San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante).

As part of my experience at Pennsylvania State University (PA, USA), I received teaching instruction and worked as a Spanish lecturer in basic and intermediate undergraduate Spanish courses.

Finally, I also worked as au pair in Oxfordshire (England). I was in charged of three siblings who were 13, 10 and 9. I had to take care of them, entertain them and teach Spanish as a foreign language.

Tutoring Approach:

All my personal experiences learning and teaching foreign languages have shown me the important role that teachers, language assistants and tutors play in a classroom setting and, specially, in the long journey of learning a new language.

Furthermore, being a language learner for so many years has given me the ability to predict and to overcome difficulties that students may have in the process of acquiring a language.

Additionally, I believe that a language is linked to cultural aspects which enrich it and make it more interesting. This is why I look for resources that transmit the vast culture that Spanish carries and I try to create didactic materials that appeal to students' interests so as to keep them motivated and interested. I usually introduce the content and then the students have to solve a task (task-based teaching).

Based on the previous ideas, I feel working as a tutor would provide me with the perfect setting to develop my teaching skills and I am willing to contribute to my total commitment and enthusiasm to the teaching of my own culture, my two native languages and English as a foreign language.
I am also looking for new challenges in the work and research world so as to keep learning and gaining professional experience.
