APPROACH TO TUITION

Tailoring tuition to suit the student
The advantage of one-to-one tuition is that I can assess what specific needs a student has, and organise my lessons around those needs. Some students need essay technique help some have a specific set of topics they want to go over others might need an entire course taught to them as they have left school or are being home educated.

Knowing the syllabus
All GCSEs and A Levels follow a national syllabus, and I know them all very well. In my first lesson with any student I will make sure they are aware of the overall requirements of the syllabus, on a topic-by-topic basis. I will always stick to what the student needs to know to pass that particular syllabus I do not needlessly make students learn things they do not need to know.

Digital handouts
In my years of tuition, I have built up a cloud-based digital archive of hundreds of handouts. Say a student is learning about arguments for the existence of God for RS A Level - I have handouts very clearly outlining the Ontological, Teleological and Cosmological arguments and all relevant criticisms. These handouts are a great extra help alongside my teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to proof-editing / English checking is to look primarily at the language. For some clients - university students in particular - it is not appropriate to offer an editorial service as this goes against the rules of university submissions. However, where I think a mistake has been made or something is not clearly expressed - and it is not a simple matter of correcting the language - then I will flag it up to the student so they can look at it again.

My main aim with students is to build their confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. To this end I concentrate on teaching the skills they require to achieve the grades they want. My role is not to replace the teaching they get at school but to compliment it so a tutoring session could concentrate on planning an essay the student has been asked to write or going through specific areas the student needs help with. I won't necessarily give homework - unless required - as I feel students have enough to do without me adding to their workload.

In return I expect my students to engage with the sessions. They don't have to like the subject and of course I'm there to help those who don't understand some things or just need a little help or encouragement, but the student must be prepared to be tutored.

I have done a vast amount of work with pupils with self-esteem issues and challenging behaviour. In addition, working with gifted and talented students.

I have taught Drama to both GCSE and A-level students, I have supported students through course work and controlled assessment.

Media and English have been taught up to GCSE.

I have worked in various schools in Sheffield and Birmingham.

I am currently teaching English and Drama in a secondary school in Warwickshire.

Tutoring Approach:

To work with the student on identifying the areas in which their are struggling to reach their full potential and why. Whether it is because they are struggling to understand or they lack in confidence in the particular subject. I would then work with the student to build the gaps in their knowledge and build confidence through interactive and individual learning. A combination of both styles of learning secures knowledge and the belief that the student has the knowledge.

Personal Description:
My name is Andrea. I was born in Hungary, but I live in the UK in Eastbourne. I`m a dedicated TESOL/TEFL teacher with very good results. I have been working in different language schools in the UK as an EFL teacher and Director of Studies and at the University of Southampton, teaching international students. Besides teaching English as a second/foreign language I've always wanted to improve my knowledge and get to know more about how language learning can become even more effective. I am 53 years old, have lived in Manchester all of my life (except for a brief time in Glasgow where I met my wife!) We have five children and usually have one or two foster children with us. We love to do stuff together; camping, fishing, walking, canoeing, you name it, we'll have tried it. By my friends I am known as Bar-B-Q Steve. To my tutees I'm known by a variety of names but mainly as the guy who helped them get where they wanted to get to. They all started in Manchester but are now truly all over the world doing some amazing things; this brings me the greatest pleasure.

Teaching Experience:

I gained Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) in 1987. Since then I have worked in both High School teaching Physics and in Primary School as a class teacher. Five years ago I further qualified as a specialist maths intervention teacher. I presently work at a Primary School running maths intervention programs. I have received and given training in the new 2014 National Curriculum and am therefore aware of new approaches being used by schools.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that secondary school students should be independent, critical thinkers, being able to easily relate historical context to the English Literature curriculum. I would provide information and set small homework tasks that will give the student both historical contexts and a further understanding of the source discussed, enabling them to make a further connection with the author. This is one of the criteria's that examiners look for in GCSE English papers, so I hope to improve this skill.

I also hope to make the subject of English and Drama enjoyable, conducting assessments and learning through games. For subjects such as Shakespeare, I endeavour to use clips of performances and DVD's to help with the analysis of the language. I will also set small creative homework tasks, that make learning fun and creative.

My main approach for KS2 students would be to make English fun and creative, conducting games and exercises that will both entertain and educate.

I have been playing Trumpet and Cornet for over 30 years now and have been teaching both Brass and Music Theory for the last 18 years. I regularly submit students for ABRSM exams and to date I maintain an exceedingly good pass rate for all my pupils who decide to undertake Grade examinations in both their instruments and Music Theory. I strongly encourage my pupils to undertake study of Music Theory as part of their lessons alongside their Practical Study, as experience has shown many students attain Grade V ABRSM with no substantial previous knowledge of this area.
As Grade V Theory is a requirement of the ABRSM before a student can be entered for a Grade VI examination on their instrument I feel that teaching the Theory alongside their instrumental studies assists in minimising the delay before a student can proceed to the higher examinations if they so wish. Further to this I believe it also allows them a better understanding of the music they are striving to perform. While I encourage my students to take the Grade examinations as a mark of their progress I am also happy to work with students who do not wish to undertake the pressures of certification but just wish to learn to play or improve their playing ability for their own enjoyment.

Though I have had no professional experience tutoring, during secondary school I was a mentor for helping younger children with reading and writing. I also have several language partners that I help to enhance their English skills as well as correcting their grammar. Tutoring Approach:

As stated previously, while I have never professionally tutored, I think this role would be good for me. I am patient and persevering, and understand through my own experiences that it is not always possible to learn through one method, but instead, there are many ways to learn new information that is tailored to your needs.
