Personal Description:
My name is Dave, and I live in the Inverness area. I have a degree in History (Hons), and my area of expertise is UK and European social history from 1700. I have also studied US history, Scottish history, and European political history.

I also have a Masters Degree in Employment Law and Practice through the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

In my spare time I coach school football, and have done so for 8 years.

Teaching Experience:

While I have no formal teaching experience, I have home tutored several children of friends. I have also coached hundreds of children up to age 16, in football lessons. As head coach for the local school, I have taught not only technical skills to children, but just as importantly, instilled a sense of self belief, and confidence, in their abilities. The confidence to express an opinion is vitally important and I do believe that, when it comes to history, belief in ability in expressing one's own viewpoint is crucial.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to encourage self belief, and achieve this through a relaxed, proactive approach to the subject matter. I can critically analyse a students written work, and suggest ways of making those all important changes in order to achieve higher grades.

Personal Description:
I am 54 now and consider myself to have reached a point where I have experience to share and yet still enjoy working with the students and helping them to get to their own potential. I am family orientated, considered by my friends and colleagues to be warm and nurturing.

I am passionate about my students reaching their potential, even if their starting point is not deemed to be high by academic standards.

I am used to a wide variety of challenges and opportunites having worked with special needs for many years.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught through all the age ranges starting off as a Internationally Qualified Montessori Teacher, working right through to University level as an accelerated learning practitioner (I trained with Tony Buzan). My core specialism is Dyslexia and Special Needs. I have worked with home schooled children for many years as well as continuing to do regular home tutoring after school hours and some Saturday mornings. I still run Montessori workshops particularly for those involved in homehomeschooling. I am also a Qualified and Insured Naturopath and teach a wide variety of alternative health and well-being workshops, as in my experience, health and well being are directly related to the students ability to learn effectively; so many students who have experienced challenges in assimilating learning often are found to have some form of health or allergy issues. .

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer a holistic style of teaching, using where possibly a multi - sensorial and multi -discipline approach. I believe that a good relationship with the student, which, while still being professional, engenders a sense of trust, caring and belief in the students ability to rise higher than they thought they could. I feel that one has to enable the student to find out where their true base line is through good assessment, then allow them to work on their challenges through the utilization of their strengths. I believe in supporting the student in developing their own, successful and sophisticated learning strategies which are unique to their learning style.
I have a current enhanced DBS certificate and am starting up a Montessori childminding facility.

I am Talha. I am a Chartered Certified Accountant. I am a full time accountancy and finance tutor. I have been tutoring accountancy and finance courses to ACCA, AAT and University students since 2011.

Qualifications:
> ACCA - Member (London College of Accountancy)

Teaching Experience:

I specialise in the following: UK Taxation, Financial Accounting, Management/Cost Accounting and Financial Reporting. I have been teaching the above mentioned subject areas for last 5 years. I have also been working in an accounting firm which gives me an extra edge to show my students how theory is actually implemented in business.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is a passion for me. I follow a very friendly teaching style. My approach is to make sure that my students completely understand the topic before i finish the lecture. My lecturing approach is to ask as many questions as possible which relates to the topic. This gives me an idea to understand how much a student already knows about the topic and how much i need to teach him about the topic.

Personal Description:
I am 54 years old, I am married with four children. I have a degree ( Joint Honours, 2.1 in Agriculture with Agricultural Economics) and a Cert Ed. I am a member of the Institute for Learning. I have taught a wide range of subjects over 28 years and am able to coach you to success whether you are looking for science, geography, Excel spreadsheets, English as a Foreign Language or even French and German ( I worked in both countries when I was younger)

Teaching Experience:

I can help you prepare for exams in Geography, Biology, Ecology, French and German. I have taught English as a Foreign Language over many years. I can also help you with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, particularly for Business. I am a patient, enthusiastic and committed teacher with 28 years experience particularly with post 16 and adult education. I have taught agriculture and related topics over that time, and very much enjoyed diversifying my teaching portfolio as new courses arose at the college. I have taught a range of biology and geography related topics, including plant and soil science, crop science, crop production, livestock production, environmental issues, ecology, woodland management. In business I have helped many people develop diverse enterprises, preparing carefully costed cash flow projections. I very much enjoy seeing people develop confidence with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, which are an invaluable tool.

Tutoring Approach:

I am convinced that one-to-one tuition is by far the most efficient way in which a person can progress and gain confidence. Often someone can grasp a topic in 5 minutes of one-to-one that would have taken 2 hours to cover with a larger group. Once you are confident with a topic, we move on rapidly to the next one. A current A level tutee of mine told his father "I learnt more in that 2 hour session than I have all term at school" and his headteacher wrote to congratulate him on his improved grades. (The reason for this is not that his teacher is bad, far from it, but a tutor can give you personal one-to-one attention, concentrating on the bits you need) I always ensure that the learners are confident with each step before progressing further.

I am a student at the University of Oxford reading German. For my A Levels I studied German, English Literature and History and received A*, A* and an A. For AS I also did Mathematics and for my GCSE's I studied: Maths, Dual Science, English Literature, English Language, German, French, History, Art and Drama.

Teaching Experience:

I worked in a primary school for 6 months in my gap year, primarily teaching reading, writing and mathematics to the younger years as well as art, sport and IT skills. Previous to this job, I taught a German club at a local primary school and have worked on a charity literacy scheme, where I tutored reading and writing one on one to a child who was underachieving for his age group. I have also done other volunteer tutoring at a primary school, reading one on one with the children and improving their literacy skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it is best to discuss together what you feel you need help with or needs to be worked on and from there we can assess how best to proceed. I prefer you to bring your own material to me as from this I can see what it is you are struggling with, how advanced your school work is and the level you are aiming for.

Personal Description:
In 2013, graduated from King's College London and Humboldt University in Berlin, where I studied English law and German law, LLB an LLM, in English and German. After working for a year in admin-related jobs, I did another masters, in EU International Relations, at College of Europe in Bruges, studying in English and French. I spent the last half a year in Brussels, doing a traineeship in the European Commission and now I am back in London, looking for a job and would love to do some tutoring as well, as I have some experience as a teacher and really enjoy doing it!

As far as my knowledge of German is concerned, I spent a year in Berlin (Humboldt University in Berlin) doing my masters in German and European Law and Legal practice. It included writing and defending a masters thesis in German as well as passing exams in German. I learnt German at school (passed it with the best grade at my IB final exams - A-levels equivalent, I also passed the test DaF, proving the knowledge of this language at the C1 level) and at university, where I had legal German courses. I have experience teaching German as I was tutoring German during my last year at KCL to fellow stundents within the framework of the KCL Language Society. I was also teaching German through this website a couple of years ago and very recently, during the traineeship in Brussels I was teaching intermediate German to a group of fellow trainees on a weekly basis.

As for Polish - I come from Poland originally, so Polish is my mother tongue. I went to school in Poland and only left the country at the age of 19. During my last year at KCL, I was also giving individual Polish lessons part time to English people.

Teaching Experience:

I was teaching English to children in kindergarten in my home country when I was at secondary school. The children were aged 4-6 and I was teaching basic vocabulary and expressions to them. I was preparing various games and songs in order to make the teaching experience easier for them.
While at university, I was an active member of the language society and so I taught German to fellow students, at the beginners and intermediate levels. I taught them grammar rules but also made them practice speaking and listening. I was giving individual Polish lessons during my last year at university as well. Recently, I was a German tutor teaching intermediate level German to the trainees in Brussels.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutors must be very patient and answer every question as carefully and as exactly as they can. They should know what their tutees' motivation for learning new languages is and try and set goals that would be suitable to the tutees' needs. This means, tutors should approach each tutee individually and find out what is most important for them in the learning process.
I also believe that learning a new language requires a lot of work to be done by the tutees at home. This is why I give homework as I believe students need to have motivation to study also outside the classes. I set a specific number of vocabulary they need to learn for the next class and check if they have done that. Moreover, I believe learning a language is not just about the grammar rules and for this reason I not only give my students grammar exercises but also encourage them to listen to the radio/news/tv etc. in the language they learn and try to speak as much as possible.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm in my final year of a French and Italian degree at UKC, where I'm reading lots of novels and writing essays on them! Last year I studied at universities in Geneva, Switzerland, and Bologna, Italy, where I also travelled. When I'm not in the library or a seminar, I love to cook, read, and write, I have my own blog. I can tutor in French, Italian, and English, up to A Level. I'm also willing to travel around North Kent, about 45 minutes outside of Canterbury, and tutor over email and webcam. We can cover anything on your course, from basic grammar and vocabulary to A Level cultural topics and speaking exams. Get in touch and we can see what would work best for you.

Teaching Experience:

At sixth form I helped several friends with their GCSE Italian work (they all achieved at least an A grade) and helped my younger sister with both her GCSE French work and her GCSE History coursework, for which she achieved and A* grade. When I was studying in Italy I also took a course on teaching languages to Primary School Children.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is simple: start with the very basics and build on these once they are secure. I will help with homework and coursework as well as practice for exams. I am also happy to provide materials such as grammar exercises and mark these.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying BSC Economics at The University of Birmingham.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for almost 4 years having taught various students of different levels. My students have mainly been from ages 5-16 however in exceptional cases I have taught older students.
Over the years I have developed my teaching skills having worked with different students and working at various tuition centres and schools. Park View Business and Enterprise School (now an academy) invited me to teach students in the Mathematics department. This two week work placement taught me how to plan lessons, manage grouped lessons and cater to individual students that may require particular assistance.

Tutoring Approach:

The purpose of a tutor is to assist students in learning the concepts covered in the students' learning material. Hence, I help in reviewing the students' class material, discussing the text, working on sample problems, and predicting test questions. I also ensure that the work covered during the lesson is understood by giving homework which is then marked and corrected with the student to ensure that the student learns from its mistakes.
I am able to accommodate students of different levels and motivate all students that are willing to put in time and effort to excel in their studies.

Personal Description:
I have a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Creative Arts, comprising Textile Design and Fine Art, from Bath Spa University, and a Masters Degree in Fashion and Textiles Design from the same university. After completing my degree as a mature student in 2006 I worked as a Textile Designer for a year before setting up a luxury lingerie business, which I closed in 2010 due to the financial situation. However, this experience taught me a great deal about setting up a business and manufacturing a product. Since then I have been self employed as a practising artist/designer and sell my work both online and through exhibitions and fairs.

Teaching Experience:

I spent school holidays working with disadvantaged youngsters on playgroups in Salford, Manchester. After leaving school I spent a year as a Community Service Volunteer in a school for blind children in Newcastle upon Tyne. This involved working with children from the age of three to eleven. I have also helped children with their reading skills at my local primary school when my own children were young. During my degree I mentored students, and completed a work placement at a sixth form college in Birmingham where I tutored students in drawing skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I want to support each individual to realise their potential to the best of their abilities. I aim to help students develop their confidence and creativity using sketchbook work, research and critical analysis, and can assist students with portfolio presentation and with report and essay writing. I have an extensive background in fashion, textiles and painting, with specific knowledge of dye processes, surface design, free embroidery, drawing, Adobe Photoshop and painting, and enjoy helping students progress and excel in these areas.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Zuri and I am an American MA History student at King's College London. I specialize in study skills, writing, history (particularly intersections of race, class, and gender), and voice! I am very interested in teaching voice lessons and I will be able to help with basic music theory as well as vocal coaching as I am a jazz, musical theater, and classical singer. If you have ever wanted to sing, but feel you lack the confidence or technique to do so, I would be glad to help. I don't have a piano, but I'd be happy to meet at a practice room in London, or just use backing tracks on my laptop. As far as history, writing, and study skills, I would be more than happy to edit essays, show you how to improve your arguments, and teach you more about the methods of studying history. I can travel anywhere the tubes will take me, but I prefer zones 1 and 2. We could easily meet at a library, coffee shop, or bookstore. Also, I am available Monday after 12pm and every other day except for Tuesdays!

Teaching Experience:

English as a foreign Language for Roeland (Belgian summer camps)-advanced English
Math and English tutor in Boston (Prospect Hill Academy)-preparation for standardized exams
Engineering and math instructor for Girl Scout Camps
Singing lessons for students and Tufts University

Tutoring Approach:

I will first assess what you need to learn, what your skill set is at the moment, and how long we have to work together. Then I will develop a plan with very tangible end goals and milestones along the way. If you only need one session, of course we shall expedite this process. Everything will be catered to your needs!

Personal Description:
I am currently studying my second year of A-Levels at The Liverpool Blue Coat School. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and believe I have a friendly, approaching personality which makes me able to communicate with children of all ages. In my free time I enjoy playing hockey and attend Ancient Greek lessons. In the future I aim to study maths at university.

Teaching Experience:

In recent years, I have delivered a maths lesson to a year 8 class, which proved to be very enjoyable for both the students and I. I deliver weekly lessons to year 7s at Blue Coat and I am currently tutoring year 11 latin students in preparation for their latin GCSE. As well as this, I have a younger sister who I regularly help with homework. I am also currently tutoring several students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the key to success for anything in life is
1) to have the necessary knowledge
2) to know your own personal weaknesses and also knowing how to go about fixing them
3) to have self-belief and confidence about whether you can succeed
I am here to provide a positive environment for students so that no question is a stupid question and to help students achieve their very best potential. Unfortunately in schools nowadays, teachers may not have the time to check that every single individual student understands everything they have been taught so I am able to teach and revise 'fuzzy' areas so that students feel both confident walking into an exam and knowing they have tried their very best to reach their potential. The most rewarding thing about being a tutor is seeing students' self-satisfaction and personal development.
