Personal Description:
Hi, everyone,The academic year is now a term old and things are ticking along nicely for almost all my students of 2016-17. Sadly two have had to drop out of school/college studies because of personal issues which is sad, when the time is right, these two very bright individuals will come back to studying, I'm sure.

I am more busy than ever this year but do have perhaps one or two spaces for students keen to just improve or to transform themselves and their fortunes. However bad things seem, I can show you how make the best of your talents.

Craig

TWO EXAM PAPER NOTICES

A couple of examination paper notices.

1. I am now OCR trained for the new AS level source/essay paper. Obviously this has given me a clear insight into how it's marked and how students need to approach it to be successful.
2. Secondly, the ED Excel Y13 A2 sources & essay paper (three secondary sources): I worked with four students on this last year and achieved spectacular results (these pupils can be contacted; some won't be able to put referees up here because I found all 4 of them via word of mouth and the UK's other major tutoring site). I'm very happy to report that I worked hard and thought hard on refining my advice on the paper and it has clearly paid off handsomely. Do contact me for details; I can pass these on to you prior to your making a decision on whether to engage me (or not as the case may be). Naturally anyone re-taking the A2 paper in 2017 can benefit from this. The new EdExcel History exam has a similar paper so this year's cohort of Y13 students should be able to benefit too.

Note. Because I'm away for the next 3 weeks carrying out research in London and Reading for my PhD I will not be able to begin lessons this year until the last week of September.

Plus:

Important policy change! If your young one or you, the student, is/are one who is not prepared to be coached and trained as our Olympic athletes are - and by this I mean that the performer puts themselves in the hands of the coach and doesn't try to tell them how to do the job - then please do not get in touch: simply pass on to another tutor somewhere else on this site.

And now, The Pitch!

So, my name is Craig, a very dedicated one-to-one tutor of History, Politics and English. I offer an exceptionally high level of expertise as a history, politics (and English) teacher, teacher of essay writing, exam writing and exam taking. This is based on well over two decades of experience in schools and in homes. Though I have been teaching a long time, I am continually striving to improve the quality of my work, constantly analyzing the effect of my advice on performance and trying to perfect the art and craft of the job.

When not tutoring, most of my time is spent working (hard!) as a student too! I am just about to begin the third year of my PhD, supervised by Professor Tony Collins of De Montfort University, Leicester, undertaking research in 20th century British history. (Rugby fans might like to note at this point that Tony is the number one rugby historian - of all codes - in the world. All his books are very well worth reading.)

I am exceptionally well qualified. I have an MA (2011) in History and am now two years into my doctoral studies. I have written fiction and non-fiction. I have had experience in being an A level marker with an exam board. I have had long experience in teaching and preparing whole History & Govnt. & Politics year groups for A level, producing outstanding results.

I take on all types of students. Some need a lot of training, some need to be dragged away from a collision-course with failure, some need finessing, some need waking up, some need inspiring, some need a boost in confidence; some need more intellectual stimulation; all can and do improve their writing.

My chief strengths are: 1. I know how to teach students to write. 2. I know how to prepare them for exams. 3. My methods are clear, simple and work beautifully. 4. I care very much about the progression of my students. 5. I treat my work with them with the utmost seriousness. 6. But I'm a human being with a sense of humour! 7. I am very, very experienced. 8. As a parent of three children who have gone through the school and university experience, I understand what both the student and the parent is going through.

I am very happy to work with students online. I have found it to work extremely well.

More on my current research project...
I am currently working on doctoral research into the BBC, sport and social class, 1922-64, with Tony Collins at De Montfort University, Leicester. He is the director of DMU's International Centre for Sports History & Culture, a department of world renown, and the leading British powerhouse of sports history. I am very proud to be working with Tony and within the department. Undergrad students should note that I am working under one of the world's best historians, a 3-time winner of the prestigious Aberdare Prize for Sports Books.

Becoming a student again, beginning with the masters degree course at De Montfort University in 2010 has really helped my teaching. As well as keeping on top of developments in academic history. I am much better read! I know more! It has also taken me right back in touch with what it feels like to be a student and all that follows from that. It has also enabled me to extend my tutoring potential to undergraduates and masters students.

I'm happily married with 3 children fully grown (it's only their father who's lagging behind).

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 24 years in secondary schools in Bromley, Kent and Derbyshire where I now live. History was my specialism but I was head of Politics for a number of years in the last part of my school career. I also taught Geography, Economics, English and R.E.

Since beginning to tutor students, I have taught history, Government & Politics and English (including basic literacy skills to a young person with dyslexia). Courses taught have mostly been those at GCSE and A level.

I have taught a wide range of topics within French, German, Russian and British history. The list includes the usual suspects: causes of World Wars 1 and 2, Hitler and the Third Reich, the French Revolution (and its causes) and Napoleon; also Tsarist Russia, the Russian revolution and Stalin as well as the European Reformation, France in the 16th century, Louis XIV and aspects of Irish and Chinese history and 19th century France, plus 20th century USA. politics (Boom and Bust, New Deal and Post-War Boom, and also the Witchcraft Persecution in Europe (1550-1680).

In terms of British history I am very much up to speed with all aspects of its 20th century political history (high politics, parties, electoral history, social history & economic history, right through to the 21st century, in fact); I have also taught most aspects of 19th history, social, economic and political. For the last decade and a half of my school-teaching career I taught the A level course in 16th and 17th century - The Tudors, James I, Charles I, Causes of the English Civil War, Charles II, James II & the Glorious Revolution, the reigns of William & Mary & Queen Anne.

I have recently added 19th century British politics (Reform Bill through Peel, Palmerston, Disraeli and Gladstone to Salisbury) and Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe to my "roster" of topics.

Since becoming a PhD student my expertise level in terms of content knowledge has leaped forward in 20th century British history. However...

...it isn't the historical content of the course that matters so much: technique is the key; know-how; how to write; how to take an exam; how to prepare for the whole exam period; how to approach the whole thing mentally, psychologically; how to be the best you can be; how to be successful - end of story!

I have worked with students on exam preparation and revision, coursework planning and execution and essay writing techniques. It is here that the battle to improve and to reach a fulfillment of potential, often with the reward of high grades, is usually won.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't tinker around the margins of issues. I give students something all those who come for help require: a method to use to dispose of the problems posed by the issue of writing that dreaded thing: the essay! Not a tinkering round the edges of the thing, a tip here, a bit of advice there, but a comprehensive yet simple and absolutely clear set of actions and principles through which the student can fulfill their potential: show the examiner what they know and understand of the topic.

Following on from the above, my approach to tutoring begins and ends with the drive to be successful. If I did not unfailingly improve students, help them to achieve the grades they want and need I would not be writing this.

In between comes what we might describe as philosophy and methods. It's hard to write about methods without immediately mentioning what I suppose might be my strongest "offer" (I don't much like that word but there, I've used it). As a schoolteacher I developed a unique but simple method of essay planning and writing that achieved stunning results. So successful has it been over 20 years that I am astonished that no one else seems to have found it. But in my experience up to February 2013 no teacher has. Essay writing is still something that many, many students find difficult and confusing. It really does not need to be this way.

Obviously content issues are hugely important and here I rely on my communication skills which have yet to let me down! These, naturally, go hand in hand with a knowledge of British and European history across a variety of years which has grown over recent years particularly through my MA studies, my PhD research and through working with students on a range of historical periods, topics and people. I find myself to be adaptable to different types of students. I am able to adapt my language and my technique to fit the situation. I am also somewhat stubborn in that I never give up on solving a problem. If we have to go over time, so be it!

Finally, some more of my personal philosophies of teaching. I believe that students generally do not achieve their potential. With each student I aim to take them to standards (and grades) that they did not think were possible. Without exception I push, push and push until we run out of time as we inevitably do. I also do not believe in lost causes. Much can be achieved in a very short space of time. I have seen this happen over and over again.

There is much more to be said but that, I hope, will do for now.

Craig

Personal Description:
I am a 30 year old female graduate from the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow. I have a joint Honours degree in French and Italian (language and studies) for which I gained a 2:1. I also have a Masters in Marketing which I also obtained from the University of Strathclyde. I am currently working in the Modern Languages department of St Ninian's High School in East arendreeshire. I spent a year abroad in Lyon, France, during my fourth year of university, where I worked as an English Language Assistant in two high schools. I am extremely patient and understanding and have a lot of experience tutoring both young children and teenagers, especially in French and Italian. I am passionate about working with and helping others and find it to be a most rewarding experience and I would love to pass on my knowledge and skills, in my specialist subjects, in order to help develop the skills of the tutees I will be working with. I am a very driven, confident and enthusiastic individual and I give 100% to everything I am involved with and I am passionate about achieving results and helping others to do so also.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified French & Italian teacher in secondary education and have acquired a great amount of experience throughout my different posts and have gained great confidence in teaching the new National 4 and 5 qualifications. I also have experience teaching the Higher Course in both languages. During my fourth year of University, I worked in two high schools in Lyon, France as an English language assistant, teaching children, teenagers and young adults, from the age of nine to twenty three. I was responsible for helping them with all aspects of the language, and developing their reading, writing, listening and verbal skills by preparing and working on a number of different activities. I also taught them about British culture, history and lifestyles so as to help develop their knowledge of Britain, particularly Scotland, in general. I ensured that I worked differently with different individuals, depending on their style of learning and I took a different approach accordingly. I aimed to make my style of teaching both informative and fun so that they enjoyed learning and I believe this is something I am always successful in as many tutees I have worked with have commented on my positive and helpful way of teaching.

In my final year of high school I was involved in the 'Peer Education' programme whereby I went into five different French and Italian classes and helped those who were experiencing difficulties with the subjects. I helped particularly with grammar issues as these seemed to pose the most problems for pupils and I also helped them prepare for upcoming speaking and writing tests. I also helped pupils to understand easier ways of making the most of their French or Italian dictionary and taught them creative and simple of ways of tackling listening and reading tests. Moreover, I worked on a one to one basis with a Higher grade pupil who was experiencing problems with French and we explored different ways of making difficult areas that much easier. I was also part of the 'Paired Reading' programme where I worked with pupils aged eleven to fifteen who experienced reading difficulties. I met with three pupils for one hour each week, on an individual basis, and we would work on techniques for improving their reading ability and they would read to me. These two programmes were very gratifying, especially when I witnessed a pupil's confidence grow as their reading skills improved.

I have also tutored two family friends, both in French and Italian, with a great focus on exam preparation and the skills that they needed to do well on class tests. I also help my niece and nephew with their French, focusing greatly on the areas they find the most difficult.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a different approach to my tutoring depending on the individual I am working with. On my first session with my tutee I will find out the areas that they are experiencing the most difficulty in, and what their strengths and weaknesses are, as this will help me to develop an effective and helpful way of teaching. I prepare various worksheets, practice tests and activities which are interactive and will allow for valuable learning. I will ask the tutee what their preferred way of learning is and look at ways in which they successfully learn in other subjects and try to incorporate this in to my way of teaching. I encourage tutees to ask questions wherever necessary and to state if they wish me to try a different approach. I believe communication is the key to successful learning and I pride myself on my friendly and approachable nature and my ability to achieve results in my tuition. On the whole, I am aware that my way of teaching has to be of benefit to the tutee so I will tailor my approach to suit their wants and needs.

Personal Description:
I recently graduated with a degree in English Studies from the University of Barcelona. The degree was based on literature, history, grammar and linguistics of the English language; giving a level of expertise with the language, its use and its literature.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst studying I started working as a foreign language teacher (English), giving me the opportunity to gain classroom experience. I was in charge of a wide range of students, from five years old students to adult students. I gained experience with lesson preparation, activities preparation, coursework marking and dealing with the daily classroom obstacles. Skills that I have also applied and expand in my former work.

I also had some private students, providing one-to-one tuition in English as a foreign language.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring approach according to my experience, is always based on the needs of the students and the necessity that needs covering in the curriculum. After examining the tutee necessities and the lessons needed to cover, I will work in specific activities that will cover the tutee necessities.

Personal Description:
I am an LSE graduate in BSc Accounting and Finance and have also obtained postgraduate qualifications in Statistics, I am currently a dedicated and passionate full-time tutor, I am passionate about my subjects and dedicated to seeing students do well.

I was privileged enough to be afforded a very good private education and originally decided to take on tutoring as an opportunity to share my knowledge with others and allow them to realise their full potential and all the other benefits of a good education.

Five main factors have contributed to my success so far namely,
- I have high expectations of myself and my students, I believe every student can achieve the best grades with the right help

- I instil confidence and a "can do" attitude in students, regularly reminding them that nothing is "hard" if you have been shown how to do it properly

- I listen to students, this keeps lessons interactive and ensures I have constant update on their thought process and current understanding

- I am relatively young so students feel comfortable engaging with me and enjoy learning from me

- I ensure continuous support for students, I make myself available for questions via phone or e-mail throughout the day to ensure the support does not end at the end of the lesson!

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Mathematics and Economics tutor for 4 years in this time my reliability and skill has enabled me to develop a good reputation which has allowed me to have a consistent base of 12 - 16 students on a weekly basis.

Career Highlights!

- Academic Year 2011 - 2012 I helped a student who was predicted a C grade at GCSE to achieve a coveted place at Eltham College after passing a difficult 16+ exam

- Academic year 2012 - 2013 I helped a student who scored a D grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 level after 8 months of tuition. He was the only student to score an A grade in his school since 2007.

- Academic Year 2013 - 2014 I helped a student who scored a C grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 Economics with an impressive 97% in Unit 1, 99% in Unit 2 and 100% in Unit 3. He had also had three previous tutors who he was dissatisfied with before coming to me.

Further Teaching Experience

At degree level I have taught Macro and Micro Economics to students attending Russell Group Universities, this year I helped an international student from Ukraine achieve over 70% in both Macro and Micro Economics.

I have taught A-Level Economics across Edexcel, AQA and OCR syllabuses with equal success. I have never had a student score below a B grade and have had several students score over 90% in modules.

I have taught Mathematics at A-Level, GCSE, 16+ and 11+ common entrance levels and covered AQA, Edexcel and iGCSE exam boards. I have helped students gain coveted places at top independent schools such as Eltham College and Bromley High. I have also helped students improve from as low as C grades at GCSE to A grades, however my most notable success this year came when I helped an AS Maths student who scored a D grade in January achieve a B grade in May with an impressive 84% in C1.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach embodies a long term approach to learning I teach students in a way which will allow them to be successful in higher study as well as their more short term exams. I also try to make students more confident in their abilities overall not just the material I teach.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation to success in academic study. I concentrate a lot of time and energy on instilling these basic principles in students.

I am also a strong believer in understanding over 'rope learning' I ensure that pupils understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, never encouraging them to simply regurgitate what they have seen previously.

I also encourage practical understanding of concepts frequently referencing real world examples and using objects to illustrate theory as I recognise that theory on its own given no relevance is harder to remember. Supplementary to this I also relate teaching material to potential job roles and tasks which I have knowledge of (mostly Banking or Business related) in order communicate usefulness to students and keep things interesting.

Finally I believe teaching successfully is ultimately about listening to your students I constantly encourage students to question things and express anything they don't understand or are not too sure of. If a student looks unsure or hesitant about something I will ask open questions or get them to explain concepts to me in order to fully grasp their understanding. This also helps build their confidence and ability to express themselves accurately.

Personal Description:
My name is Andrew and I currently live in Fleet, Hampshire. I studied Fine Art up until degree level which I accomplished a 1st class BA Hons Degree in Fine Art. I paint mostly portraiture in a hyper-realistic fashion however I have also experimented with many different and expressive styles of art work, as well as sole abstract work.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work for the Meath Epilepsy trust in Godalming where I teach as an observational and technical instructor for the mental health adult clients who live there. There I work closely with the students building up their personal portfolio in their art work consisting of painting, drawing, charcoal and pastel mark making equipment.

I also teach privately and run art workshops in my spare time in which I teach mature students art techniques in drawing and painting. My main qualities in teaching come from portraiture and painting with acrylic and oil paint.

Recently I have completed the PTLLS teaching training course and wish to continue my studies in teaching within the near future.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that teaching is about personal connection with your students and interacting with them on their level rather than simply 'getting the job done'. I can teach someone how to do something and for them to copy my influence is something however to teach someone to do it well themselves without my aid takes time to practice over and over certain techniques and my advice. I think a student should be taught from the ground upwards and by neglecting bad influences from the past the student can become highly skilled and more importantly 'satisfied' with their work and practice.
I teach my students by constantly reminding them of basic principles of drawing/painting techniques and methods for which the student automatically revises their own work and own mistakes alone.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is that I tailor my tuition to the needs of the student. I will tutor in the student's home or on their place of work. I will vary my style depending on the ability and needs of the student. I aim to run my tuition in support of the progression of my students through their subject syllabus, but I am also willing to progress more slowly and focus on particularly weak areas if the student so desires.

As I aim to tailor my tuition to the individual I expect students to maintain regular contact in regards to their subject progressions and their individual needs. I expect students to arrive at tuition sessions with a clear idea of what it is they hope to get from the sessions.

I will provide each student with a progress log and detailed feedback on how they are performing and areas where they need to improve, I may also set work for my students to complete outside of sessions and for this set work I will offer a marking service.

Personal Description:
My students find me enthusiastic, supportive, cordial and professional. I am responsive, a good listener, able to make complex ideas accessible and exciting, and can balance exploratory, individualised and structured approaches to learning. Ultimately, I believe that curiosity, engagement, and questioning are the keys to being both successful in exams and developing a life-long love of English.

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced A level English specialist tutor who has taught in three 'Beacon Status' sixth-form colleges, all of which have been rated 'outstanding' by OFSTED. I have an excellent track-record of results in terms of both 'value-added' and 'raw' grades and am able to inspire and motivate students to attain their potential in English. I have managed an outstanding department of 10 teachers and 850 A level students for four years in a sixth form college in Surrey, introducing new creative and digital methods into daily practice and have also worked at Britain's top state-sector sixth form college in Cambridge.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in drawing from a wide range of teaching methods to make a student's experience of English varied, fresh and challenging as well as identifying the particular needs of each individual to ensure that the right skills are prioritised and tackled rigorously.
Many students appreciate having a clear direction to learning and I believe in signposting different areas in a focused way - whether the skills involve close reading, constructing a debate, understanding or applying theory, researching contexts, or working on essay techniques and planning past papers.

Personal Description:
I was born in Regensburg, Germany and grew up in Penang, Malaysia. After completing high school (IGCSEs) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, I worked at North London Collegiate School Jeju, South Korea for six months as a teaching assistant. After this I attended the University of Melbourne in Australia for my three year undergraduate degree in Environments, majoring in Environmental Geographies, Politics and Cultures. During this time period, I also completed an intensive Mandarin language summer programme at the University of Hong Kong and taught English in rural Thailand during university holidays. I am bilingual, speaking English and German fluently and also speak a bit of Malay, French and Mandarin. I enjoy exploring new places and cultures and am fascinated by languages. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring and teach with a passion.

Teaching Experience:

- A2 and AS Geography (AQA, Edexcel, WJEC)
- GCSE Geography (AQA, Edexcel, OCR)
- University level Geography
- German - all levels including complete beginners and adult learners.

I am currently working (part time) as a Geography teacher in two private sixth form colleges in Ealing, London and St Albans. I teach both A-levels and GCSEs. I have experience of teaching the following exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, WJEC and OCR. Importantly, I am familiar with both the old and new specifications.

I tutored AS and A2 Geography (WJEC Board) at Uxbridge High School in preparation for their exams in June 2016.

I have been working as a private tutor for five years now, alongside my degree in Australia, as well as after, both in Australia and now London. I have had a very large and diverse range of clients. I have tutored university students in Geography and have guided them through essay submissions and exams.

I have also taught on an international level at North London Collegiate School, Jeju, South Korea (as a teaching assistant) and in rural Thailand (as part of a university project).

Tutoring Approach:

Building a strong working relationship and trust between the tutor and student is very important, and being easily approachable is a vital characteristic a tutor should have. Some students may have just lost their inspiration to learn and so it is the tutor`s job to motivate and inspire them. It is important the student is guided on an individual-based level and encouraged to actively engage and think, making links with information explained to them, and not spoon fed. I believe i can bring international experience and diversity to the students i tutor. Especially applicable to Geography, my lessons have a strong focus on exam technique and effective exam preparation.
