Personal Description:
I am a passionate, patient and friendly psychology Assistant Psychologist looking to support students in their GCSE and A-Level and level psychology. I appreciate that finding the right tutor, motivation and support can be difficult and therefore will offer the first lesson free as a taster! Having been a student myself, I understand how stressful the period can be - the not knowing which exam questions will arise in the exam, having to retain a host of studies and worrying that you will go blank in the exam. Totally normal worries! However, together we can identify key areas you feel you need support in whether that be exam technique, looking at past mock and/or specimen papers, understanding the assessment objectives in relation to specific questions or simply quizzing if you need a "study partner". There are many forms of support that can be tailored to your needs.

Teaching Experience:

Although I am not a qualified teacher, I have completed degree level poster conferences, internal presentations to peers and lecturers, led mindfulness and relaxation sessions for adults experiencing chronic conditions in an outpatient service and currently co-facilitate an anxiety management group with young people that have eating disorders and self-harming behaviours as an Assistant Psychologist. Essentially, I really enjoy working with people and believe that my clinical and research experiences will enable me to better understand your needs and support you during this period.

I am aware that since completing my GCSEs in 2008 and A-Levels in 2010, the exam specs have changed. For this reason, I wish to tutor GCSE/A-Level students on the AQA syllabus only given the time frame. Please do not hesitate to contact me via email or phone for further details.

Tutoring Approach:

Simply put, I adopt a person-centrerd approach when working with individuals. It is all about what you want to achieve and understanding the information in a way that suits your learning style. For example, I am a visual learner - anything that has colour/structure in the form of a spider diagram suits me very well. We all learn differently and hopefully we can gauge which method suits you best so that you can 1. Retain the information, 2. Enjoy the revision time 3. Achieve the best possible marks 4. Learn in a way that accommodates your skills - REAL! It is time to get "real" you can and will do it!

My aim is to enable students to have the confidence to learn the course content and have the self-belief that they can do this! I would prefer to do tutoring in a public library (if possible) but not in my own home.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my eighth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last eight years of 11 Plus entrance 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Three out of five 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

I am a young professional with a strong background in volunteer mentoring with children and young people, as well as a solid academic resume. I was home educated (tutorial-based) through primary and secondary school, and went on to study English Literature and History at the University of Edinburgh.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working since June 2011 at Mackenzie School of English, teaching English as a second language to foreign high school students.

Also, I have been a private tutor since February 2011, working with a range of ages and levels in both English Literature and History.

As well as my professional experience, I have been involved in youth work, summer camps, and one-to-one mentoring of young people for the past eight years or so. Working at summer camps has given me experience in both group work - teaching and leading discussions - as well as in one-to-one mentoring. Currently I am involved in a weekly youth club here in Leith, working with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people from the local community.

Coming from a rather unconventional educational background, I would bring with me a deep passion for the need to create a tailored and bespoke educational experience for each individual young person. Tutoring Approach:

I use only English in my lessons, encouraging my students to speak as much as possible, and to correct their own or each other's errors wherever possible.

My emphasis is on fluency, natural language and confidence, so when teaching grammar or considering problems, the student can refer to concrete examples in their heads, rather than abstract formulae in textbooks.

I use a broad range of materials, techniques, and situations, setting high standards and pushing my students to work hard towards accuracy and creativity in English.

Though I am happy teaching one-to-one, I find that a group of two to four students can be more dynamic, more relaxed, and a better environment for free expression and mutual correction. I am a student at the University of Bristol and would like to be a french tutor this summer (2013). I am currently on my year abroad in the South of France and on my return in June would like to help young students improve their french. Having studied french for 8 years i am very enthusiastic about the language, but also the culture. I am completely flexible this summer and have a car so would be able to do home tutoring. As i spend most of my time speaking french at the moment it would be a great opportunity to further this hobby in England whilst helping somebody else and hopefully giving them the enthusiasm that i have for the language.

Teaching Experience:

Although i have not got any formal qualifications as a teacher, when studying my A Levels I helped with the younger classes and often help my younger brother with his language revision. I have acquired voluntary work with children for two years as a leader at my local Brownies group, therefore engaging in and leading activities. I would feel comfortable teaching children or adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to take an approach to tutoring that suits the individual client. I would offer structured lessons with exercises and small tests for those who are preparing for exams. However I would also be happy to tutor somebody who needs to practice their spoken french. In the first lesson we can identify what suits the student best and together choose our method of teaching and learning.

I am Spanish teacher living in London. I am really friendly, responsible and I will always love to learn as many languages as possible.

Teaching Experience:

I studied a degree on Translation and Interpreting so I have a good English and French. Two years ago, I ended my MA degree on Spanish language and culture which is mainly focused on teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

I have been an English assistant teacher in two Summer Camps for 4 to 6 year old children and also taught Spanish as a foreign language to Erasmus students coming to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
I have also been personal tutor of many children between 5 and 15 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I really try to focus on a Communicative Method, I make sure grammar is learned but I do not focus on showing grammar as a separate subject which has to be learned by hard. I try to show real texts (news articles, stories, tales, etc) and once you are able to understand the vocabulary, you will notice how is grammar used in different contexts.
There is no sense of teaching a language without a real context, I try to avoid inventing sentences which have no meaning at all.

In case you wish to try different approaches, I have no inconvenience on adapting it to what you really want to do.

I'm an Engineering PhD student at the University of Cambridge, and my research is in vibrations and acoustics. I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol where I achieved a 1st. At A level I studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and French.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching two students Maths at KS3 level, one of whom moved up a Maths set at school with my help. Most recently I taught a third student A level Maths last year, helping him to achieve As in both the exams he sat. I also have a younger sibling who I'm always helping with homework!

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the best way for a student to build confidence is to work in a relaxed environment, where they're not afraid to say the wrong answer. I use the student's textbook to guide the pace of their studies and to help prepare questions for each lesson.

Personal Description:
As a recent university graduate, I offer a closer bond with students than most tutors due to the lesser age gap. Many exams that students struggle with are ones that I myself have taken, so I can empathise and relate to issues students face on a better level than older tutors. I graduated in English Literature from UEA with a 2:1, achieved A*AA at A Level in English, Philosophy and History, and obtained 10 GCSEs at A* to A and 2 more at B. I was educated at Wilson's School in Surrey which during my time there was consistently ranked as one of the best boys' state schools in the country, and indeed was at number 1 in the rankings for a few years while I was there.

I am currently working towards an MA qualification with a view to going on to a PhD to pursue a career in academic lecturing and tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

Most of my experience comes from being on the receiving end of teachers and tutors from entrance exam up until university, and understanding their shortcomings and failings and what could have been done better. Crucially, I understand student mentalities and what students want and need at all levels. I have tutored Year 5-6s in Maths and Year 10-11s in English so far. Since joining UK Tutors I have taught a 9 year old in writing skills and a 15 year old in GCSE English.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer a fun and friendly way of helping the student to realise their full potential through going over schoolwork, practice papers and other forms of assessment - but critically, I focus on talking with and building a relationship with the student. I don't want them to see tutoring as just another school classroom with another teacher - it should be a fun and intellectually stimulating environment that they enjoy participating in. My experience has shown that if the student is enjoying themselves, they will perform to a far better standard.

I can offer high level teaching in English and History, as well as Philosophy, Critical Thinking and German to an A Level standard, Maths and Sciences up to GCSE standard, other subjects can be discussed.

Crucially, I was a master at dealing with exam pressure and good coursework - I will provide expert tutoring for students suffering from exam stress and help them to format and write essays for coursework. As I did much of the same things just a few years ago, I understand better than anyone what it feels like!
