Personal Description:
Hi, everyone,The academic year is now a term old and things are ticking along nicely for almost all my students of 2016-17. Sadly two have had to drop out of school/college studies because of personal issues which is sad, when the time is right, these two very bright individuals will come back to studying, I'm sure.

I am more busy than ever this year but do have perhaps one or two spaces for students keen to just improve or to transform themselves and their fortunes. However bad things seem, I can show you how make the best of your talents.

Craig

TWO EXAM PAPER NOTICES

A couple of examination paper notices.

1. I am now OCR trained for the new AS level source/essay paper. Obviously this has given me a clear insight into how it's marked and how students need to approach it to be successful.
2. Secondly, the ED Excel Y13 A2 sources & essay paper (three secondary sources): I worked with four students on this last year and achieved spectacular results (these pupils can be contacted; some won't be able to put referees up here because I found all 4 of them via word of mouth and the UK's other major tutoring site). I'm very happy to report that I worked hard and thought hard on refining my advice on the paper and it has clearly paid off handsomely. Do contact me for details; I can pass these on to you prior to your making a decision on whether to engage me (or not as the case may be). Naturally anyone re-taking the A2 paper in 2017 can benefit from this. The new EdExcel History exam has a similar paper so this year's cohort of Y13 students should be able to benefit too.

Note. Because I'm away for the next 3 weeks carrying out research in London and Reading for my PhD I will not be able to begin lessons this year until the last week of September.

Plus:

Important policy change! If your young one or you, the student, is/are one who is not prepared to be coached and trained as our Olympic athletes are - and by this I mean that the performer puts themselves in the hands of the coach and doesn't try to tell them how to do the job - then please do not get in touch: simply pass on to another tutor somewhere else on this site.

---

And now, The Pitch!

So, my name is Craig, a very dedicated one-to-one tutor of History, Politics and English. I offer an exceptionally high level of expertise as a history, politics (and English) teacher, teacher of essay writing, exam writing and exam taking. This is based on well over two decades of experience in schools and in homes. Though I have been teaching a long time, I am continually striving to improve the quality of my work, constantly analyzing the effect of my advice on performance and trying to perfect the art and craft of the job.

When not tutoring, most of my time is spent working (hard!) as a student too! I am just about to begin the third year of my PhD, supervised by Professor Tony Collins of De Montfort University, Leicester, undertaking research in 20th century British history. (Rugby fans might like to note at this point that Tony is the number one rugby historian - of all codes - in the world. All his books are very well worth reading.)

I am exceptionally well qualified. I have an MA (2011) in History and am now two years into my doctoral studies. I have written fiction and non-fiction. I have had experience in being an A level marker with an exam board. I have had long experience in teaching and preparing whole History & Govnt. & Politics year groups for A level, producing outstanding results.

I take on all types of students. Some need a lot of training, some need to be dragged away from a collision-course with failure, some need finessing, some need waking up, some need inspiring, some need a boost in confidence; some need more intellectual stimulation; all can and do improve their writing.

My chief strengths are: 1. I know how to teach students to write. 2. I know how to prepare them for exams. 3. My methods are clear, simple and work beautifully. 4. I care very much about the progression of my students. 5. I treat my work with them with the utmost seriousness. 6. But I'm a human being with a sense of humour! 7. I am very, very experienced. 8. As a parent of three children who have gone through the school and university experience, I understand what both the student and the parent is going through.

I am very happy to work with students online. I have found it to work extremely well.

More on my current research project...
I am currently working on doctoral research into the BBC, sport and social class, 1922-64, with Tony Collins at De Montfort University, Leicester. He is the director of DMU's International Centre for Sports History & Culture, a department of world renown, and the leading British powerhouse of sports history. I am very proud to be working with Tony and within the department. Undergrad students should note that I am working under one of the world's best historians, a 3-time winner of the prestigious Aberdare Prize for Sports Books.

Becoming a student again, beginning with the masters degree course at De Montfort University in 2010 has really helped my teaching. As well as keeping on top of developments in academic history. I am much better read! I know more! It has also taken me right back in touch with what it feels like to be a student and all that follows from that. It has also enabled me to extend my tutoring potential to undergraduates and masters students.

I'm happily married with 3 children fully grown (it's only their father who's lagging behind).

Teaching Experience:

I taught for 24 years in secondary schools in Bromley, Kent and Derbyshire where I now live. History was my specialism but I was head of Politics for a number of years in the last part of my school career. I also taught Geography, Economics, English and R.E.

Since beginning to tutor students, I have taught history, Government & Politics and English (including basic literacy skills to a young person with dyslexia). Courses taught have mostly been those at GCSE and A level.

I have taught a wide range of topics within French, German, Russian and British history. The list includes the usual suspects: causes of World Wars 1 and 2, Hitler and the Third Reich, the French Revolution (and its causes) and Napoleon; also Tsarist Russia, the Russian revolution and Stalin as well as the European Reformation, France in the 16th century, Louis XIV and aspects of Irish and Chinese history and 19th century France, plus 20th century USA. politics (Boom and Bust, New Deal and Post-War Boom, and also the Witchcraft Persecution in Europe (1550-1680).

In terms of British history I am very much up to speed with all aspects of its 20th century political history (high politics, parties, electoral history, social history & economic history, right through to the 21st century, in fact); I have also taught most aspects of 19th history, social, economic and political. For the last decade and a half of my school-teaching career I taught the A level course in 16th and 17th century - The Tudors, James I, Charles I, Causes of the English Civil War, Charles II, James II & the Glorious Revolution, the reigns of William & Mary & Queen Anne.

I have recently added 19th century British politics (Reform Bill through Peel, Palmerston, Disraeli and Gladstone to Salisbury) and Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe to my "roster" of topics.

Since becoming a PhD student my expertise level in terms of content knowledge has leaped forward in 20th century British history. However...

...it isn't the historical content of the course that matters so much: technique is the key; know-how; how to write; how to take an exam; how to prepare for the whole exam period; how to approach the whole thing mentally, psychologically; how to be the best you can be; how to be successful - end of story!

I have worked with students on exam preparation and revision, coursework planning and execution and essay writing techniques. It is here that the battle to improve and to reach a fulfillment of potential, often with the reward of high grades, is usually won.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't tinker around the margins of issues. I give students something all those who come for help require: a method to use to dispose of the problems posed by the issue of writing that dreaded thing: the essay! Not a tinkering round the edges of the thing, a tip here, a bit of advice there, but a comprehensive yet simple and absolutely clear set of actions and principles through which the student can fulfill their potential: show the examiner what they know and understand of the topic.

Following on from the above, my approach to tutoring begins and ends with the drive to be successful. If I did not unfailingly improve students, help them to achieve the grades they want and need I would not be writing this.

In between comes what we might describe as philosophy and methods. It's hard to write about methods without immediately mentioning what I suppose might be my strongest "offer" (I don't much like that word but there, I've used it). As a schoolteacher I developed a unique but simple method of essay planning and writing that achieved stunning results. So successful has it been over 20 years that I am astonished that no one else seems to have found it. But in my experience up to February 2013 no teacher has. Essay writing is still something that many, many students find difficult and confusing. It really does not need to be this way.

Obviously content issues are hugely important and here I rely on my communication skills which have yet to let me down! These, naturally, go hand in hand with a knowledge of British and European history across a variety of years which has grown over recent years particularly through my MA studies, my PhD research and through working with students on a range of historical periods, topics and people. I find myself to be adaptable to different types of students. I am able to adapt my language and my technique to fit the situation. I am also somewhat stubborn in that I never give up on solving a problem. If we have to go over time, so be it!

Finally, some more of my personal philosophies of teaching. I believe that students generally do not achieve their potential. With each student I aim to take them to standards (and grades) that they did not think were possible. Without exception I push, push and push until we run out of time as we inevitably do. I also do not believe in lost causes. Much can be achieved in a very short space of time. I have seen this happen over and over again.

There is much more to be said but that, I hope, will do for now.

Craig

Personal Description:
I'm a personable, down-to-earth UCL master's graduate and qualified English teacher with experience in securing good outcomes. Those outcomes often include students' target grades, but considering the versatility of my subject - in constructing arguments, self-presentation, interview technique, and so on - I also emphasise the broad, contextualised relevance of what I teach. It's not just about the grades, it's also about the doors those grades might open and how best to equip students to walk through them.

I hugely enjoy the sheer stimulation and engagement which great literature brings and hope to inspire my students with that same passion.

Teaching Experience:

I began tutoring in 2008 through a university programme, and since then have worked with schools, private clients, abroad, and as a schoolteacher. My students have come from virtually every background and ability level. I have also taught since 2012 in various contexts including abroad and at home in schools.

Tutoring Approach:

Fundamentally, I take the mystery out of English. Whether it be essay structure, metaphor, politics or themes, I explain the subject in down-to-earth and practical terms, while always encouraging my students to expand their horizons and think about the world in which they live. My depth of learning in English at one of the world's premier centres for it, UCL, ensures I can meet any challenge you or your child may have.

I cannot teach English all in one go; like all languages, it must be learnt through years of immersion. Therefore, I ask that students work hard on their own, as well as with me, by reading regularly for pleasure and consuming other media in English as well. What I can do is refine your understanding of it and give you tips and tricks to get through those difficult exams.

I look forward to engaging with great students.

Personal Description:
I have a thorough knowledge of UK NC requirements and continue to work closely with CIE and Edexcel. I am very well organized and try and structure learning so that every student is clear and comfortable as to what is needed to swiftly progress between levels and am quick to intervene where this is not the case. I am a strong believer in making teaching and learning fun, meaningful and thought provoking - encouraging collaboration, presentation, debate and discussion as much as possible. I am an advocate of inquiry based and active learning where appropriate and in making the learning process as memorable and enjoyable as possible. At the same time I remain conscious of the need to constantly maintain the high expectations, pitch, pace and rigour which are needed for exam success in years 10-13. I pride myself on the fact that pupils of all levels and abilities enjoy coming to my classes even though they know they will have to work hard and apply themselves to the best of their ability. I am student centred, approachable and patient.

Teaching Experience:

I have been part of a number of very strong and well organised Humanities departments in the UK, Spain, Asia and the Middle East each of which has enjoyed high take up rates and excellent exam results and from which I have learnt a great deal when it comes to effective teaching and learning. I value collaborative working and the sharing of best practice and am proud of the network of solid contacts I have built up over time as well as the relationships I have built and maintained among staff and students, in the UK and abroad. I take care to keep up to date with the latest pedagogical practice and regularly attend events at the Institute of Ideas and the Historical Association. I am also currently working towards my Masters and am genuinely interested in reflecting on how young people best learn and how to best achieve a balance between exam success and love of subject

Tutoring Approach:

I am always looking to take on board ways in which I can improve what others and I are doing in order to raise pupil engagement and thus attainment and firmly believe that if something is worth doing it is worth doing well - and then improved upon second time round. A portfolio of pupil work, results and student/parent feedback is available. I am aware of the need for stimulating tutoring coming as it does at the end of a long day of study and have a proven track record of engaging students and getting them the top grades at every level.

Personal Description:
I love history! I have been 'doing' history since I was 14, and it is something that encapsulates me into a whole different world. I have worked as a history teacher at a secondary school for 10 years, and have loved delving back into the past with the older and younger students alike. I studied and worked in archaeology before becoming a history teacher, and found working with real objects from the past was an amazing experience.

At home, I am mum to a 6 year old daughter, and 4 year old son, a cat and a dog. We keep ourselves busy being outdoors as much as possible and are totally hooked on camping! We enjoy the freedom it allows and

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching History at KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level for 10 years. For four of those ten years I was Head of Department, responsible for issues such as curriculum, exams and monitoring student progress, so I am experienced in identifying areas of need for students and helping them to progress. I have been very successful with exam results, and have enjoyed guiding tutee's through their exam subjects.
I have taught AQA in the main, but have knowledge of OCR and Edexcel. I am also part of the teams of markers for AQA at GCSE, and am a moderator for the Unit 4 coursework with Edexcel. I have knowledge and understanding what exam boards are looking for in response to exam questions and coursework objectives.

I am also working as teaching GCSE English and Functional Skills in English to adults, which I enjoy.

I have been tutoring since Dec 2011, and really enjoy the change from class teaching. I have tutored a wide range of students with a wide range of needs, and have taught to all the exam boards. It is really rewarding to set up individual lessons and focus on exactly what is needed, knowing I can offer help and support to students. I like to be well prepared for individual lessons and to make the most of the time we have to improve techniques, subject knowledge and overall exam grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what really helps students to progress is an understanding of exam technique. Having knowledge of the subject is important, but knowing how to handle it and use it in an exam situation if key to gaining top grades. I like to adopt a friendly and approachable manner with students to encourage focus and progress. I will go through essays and exam questions to identify areas that could be improved, and suggest ways of improving the use of language to make the most of student's knowledge. Giving feedback for written work is imperative to aid progress and this will take a large role in my tutoring.

Personal Description:
I'm a friendly, qualified teacher, currently working in a London secondary school teaching RS, Philosophy and English. I studied Theology and Religious Studies at Cambridge (First) and I initially moved to London to do an MA in International Politics and Human Rights at City University. I caught the London bug so I'm still here! I really enjoy the opportunity it offers to teach students from a whole range of backgrounds and abilities. I have always loved learning, and I love helping children develop their understanding of the world through their chosen subjects, so I find tutoring really rewarding.

I am both professional and personable, and have always had good relationships with my tutees and their parents.

Teaching Experience:

I have a lot of experience with children through nannying and youth camps I've helped on over the past 10 years, and also have experience tutoring 1-1 in London on a weekly basis. I did my teacher training in Tower Hamlets 2 years ago, and have been working as a teacher since. I achieved 'Outstanding' or 'Good' standards in all lessons that were observed during my training.

I am passionate about the importance of education, for building both competence and confidence into children and young adults.

The Cambridge supervision system showed me how beneficial individual tutoring can be. I had two 1-1 sessions every week with my subject supervisors, which taught me first hand how to inspire, challenge and build confidence in the tutor-tutee relationship.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to have a preliminary discussion (usually by phone, but in person is also fine) with the student's parent(s) to find out about the student's level of understanding, capability and confidence, as well as their main goals and any relevant exam board they are attached to. I will tailor my approach on this basis, as well as through meeting the student and talking about what s/he finds interesting and how s/he learns best.

The method of teaching will vary between pupils as well as between subjects, most markedly between languages and sciences. However, common methods used will be explaining and clarifying any 'sticking points', going through set questions and reviewing the answers, and using creative means to bring the subject to life for the student. I strongly believe that when a student enjoys the learning process and achieves set goals, however small, his/her learning is much faster and memory is greatly improved.

I think Art and Language are very close to each other, both of them play an important roll in the world's communication system and in the development of society. Art&Language are pure culture and a very important thing in the development of children too.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that teaching Spanish is much more than teaching a bunch of grammar rules, it's teaching our art, gastronomy, our understanding of life… in short, our culture.

I use a communicative approach to the language, so grammar is always in context and at the service of real communication skills.

I focus on the objectives and needs of each student or small group. In the first lesson I will give you a level test and a content negotiation where you can tell me what grammar and cultural topics you are more interested in and how you prefer to learn them. You are the protagonist of your own education!

To teach in the best possible way I use a wide range of activities that I prepare to fit you.

Personal Description:
First half hour free - This is an opportunity for you to decide if you are happy with me and my teaching methods and also for me to assess your level and expectations.

I am a friendly native Mandarin Chinese speaker with Chinese Teacher Training Qualification from the Beijing Language and Culture University. I am also a fully qualified Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor. In addition to teaching, I love reading and writing.

BBC reports: "Researchers in Britain have found that people who speak Mandarin Chinese use both sides of their brain to understand the language. This compares to English-language speakers who only need to use one side of their brain." Chinese characters are logograms instead of phonics; I would love to help you explore the fun facts and culture meaning behind the scene. Using both sides of the brain will help in other areas of learning.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching Chinese to Korean students in China in 1992. Before moving to Layer-de-la-Haye, I taught in a Chinese School in Hampshire for one year for children from aged 6 to 10. I have the experience of making the lessons fun and attractive for the children. For Adults, I will tailor lessons to suit your specific purpose: Tourism, Business, Universal and Academic. I have also given Chinese culture lectures in both primary schools and colleges.I am teaching students GCSE mandarin in Chinese School. I have experience to help students to get ready for their GCSE exam.

Tutoring Approach:

Every lesson will be tailor-made to satisfy individual needs, interest and skill level. It is important to me that you not only enjoy the classes but also see your Chinese develop.

Lessons will cover any or all of the scope you require: talking and listening, reading and writing.

I am also very happy to teach Chinese Philosophy and Chinese Medicine if you have big passion in the Chinese Culture. The essence of Chinese Philosophy is helping gain inner strength and peace of mind. The Chinese Medicine is a natural way to keep healthy.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying my second year of A-Levels at The Liverpool Blue Coat School. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and believe I have a friendly, approaching personality which makes me able to communicate with children of all ages. In my free time I enjoy playing hockey and attend Ancient Greek lessons. In the future I aim to study maths at university.

Teaching Experience:

In recent years, I have delivered a maths lesson to a year 8 class, which proved to be very enjoyable for both the students and I. I deliver weekly lessons to year 7s at Blue Coat and I am currently tutoring year 11 latin students in preparation for their latin GCSE. As well as this, I have a younger sister who I regularly help with homework. I am also currently tutoring several students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the key to success for anything in life is
1) to have the necessary knowledge
2) to know your own personal weaknesses and also knowing how to go about fixing them
3) to have self-belief and confidence about whether you can succeed
I am here to provide a positive environment for students so that no question is a stupid question and to help students achieve their very best potential. Unfortunately in schools nowadays, teachers may not have the time to check that every single individual student understands everything they have been taught so I am able to teach and revise 'fuzzy' areas so that students feel both confident walking into an exam and knowing they have tried their very best to reach their potential. The most rewarding thing about being a tutor is seeing students' self-satisfaction and personal development.

Personal Description:
I am a postgraduate student from Beijing and currently studying MA in Theatre in the University of York. It has been an exciting journey leaning English since I was a child and I believe I am able to help people who share the same passion about Mandarin now.

Teaching Experience:

I have always paid extra attention to how my tutors were teaching me, both in English and Mandarin; and I have applied the same method to explain course materials to my friends who needed help. I am confident that with my level of English and Mandarin, I can communicate with the students without language barrier, and provide the help needed for them to speak Mandarin fluently.

Tutoring Approach:

I will ask what the students want

Personal Description:
2008 National Teaching Award Winner (Southern Region.)
Volunteer linesman every Sunday - for my 3 sons' football teams.
Keen cyclist - I've cycled further than the distance around the equator as I commuted to and from school.
Animal lover - I enjoy jogging with Scout, my rescue dog.
Educational author - I wrote a maths assessment book that was sold in WHSmith.
Piano player - I accompany a large choir that performs in both the Guildhall and the Cathedral in Portsmouth.
Prioritiser - In 2010 I decided to reduce my hours so that I could spend more time with my wife!

Teaching Experience:

I have been a classroom teacher for 23 years in 3 different schools; I was head hunted for the last job and when I left it in November 2016, it was graded outstanding by OFSTED. I have predominantly worked in year 6 where I have helped to raise standards of attainment - I have been successful in accelerating progress for many pupils (particularly in maths) to double Government expectations.

I have spent most of my career as a maths manager in schools but I have also led English and science. I have been a key stage leader for over 10 years and have mentored trainee teachers who have gone on to have their own successful teaching careers.
Winning the 2008 Award for Best Primary School Teacher in the South was an amazing experience. The judges interviewed pupils, staff and parents - families who weren't able to attend the meeting were able to submit letters of support and the highlight of the whole process was getting to read these testimonials afterwards.

Tutoring Approach:

Every pupil is different: each pupil has their own particular knowledge of facts, procedures and concepts, but they are also unique in their attitude, experience, confidence and motivation. Finding a tutoring approach that best suits each child is very important and, where appropriate, I make use of the recent educational principles of 'Growth Mindset' which challenge the notion that some people are just born clever, and encourages pupils to value risk taking, criticism and effort.

Individual tuition allows time so rarely afforded in whole class lessons to track back and identify the misconceptions that can sometimes be the underlying cause of slow progress or issues with confidence. The focus of good teaching is about building all new learning onto secure foundations and making strong and varied connections between concepts.
