Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching both one-to-one and groups for a few years now in the disciplines named in this site. I prefer sessions to happen face-to-face but online is also fine with me.

Tutoring Approach:

First thing is to improve the tutee's self-confidence. Then to break down the big barriers into small knots that the tutee can undo with dedication and practice.

Originally from Newcastle, I am now an actor and enjoy tutoring alongside my acting work. I have worked in TV, and also in theatre, including venues such as The National Theatre and the West End. Especially with younger students, I like to keep my lessons creative and practical. I studied English and Drama at Bristol University and then went on to train at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Recently, I have been tutoring in English, Drama, 11+ Common Entrance exams and general Primary school help.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for over 6 years. Alongside my tutoring, I am currently teaching Music and Drama in schools and I run workshops with Sixth Formers on ways of analysing texts practically.

7+ - I worked with Elektra (6) preparing her for 7+ Examinations. Covering English, Maths and Reasoning focussed on entry to Notting Hill and Ealing High School.

7+ - Working with Harry on English, Maths and exam technique, focussing him for 7+ exam for Dulwich Prep School. Harry has traits of both dyslexia and dyspraxia.

7+ - I work with Jules on his English. Jules is French and has just started attending a French school, so we are working to keep his English up to scratch. Main areas of focus are: speaking, spelling, listening/understanding and grammar.

7+ - Working with Charlie mainly on English, increasing his confidence in all areas but focussing on Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, and Comprehension.

11+ - Working with Guy on English and Maths one day a week. Mainly focussed on Guy's writing and spelling. Guy is preparing for entry to Westminster and Eton Schools.

11+ - I worked with Ingrid on English and Maths in preparation for exams for Notting Hill and Ealing High School, Francis Holland and Godolphin and Latymer Schools. Ingrid went to her first choice of Notting Hill and Ealing High.

11+ - I worked with Olivia in preparation for her Common Entrance exams on all papers (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as well as interview practice. Olivia is now attending North London Collegiate School (her first choice) but I also prepared her for entrance to Highgate School for Girls, City of London School for Girls and Queen's College.

Primary Help - I worked with brothers Teddy (7) and Alfie (10) mainly on English and Maths but also across all subjects generally to improve knowledge, confidence, spelling and vocabulary.

Primary Help - I worked with Rohan (10) on improving his confidence and basic skills in English and Maths. Rohan was very inquisitive and keen but needed help focussing and answering the specific questions that he was being asked.

A Level English Literature (AQA) - worked with Oliver (17) helping with coursework on The Great Gatsby and the poetry of Keats and Larkin. Oliver achieved an A grade.

AS Level Drama (AQA) - helped Yasmin to explore the analysis of texts of Lady Windermere's Fan and A View From The Bridge in preparation for exams, in which she achieved an A.

GCSE English Literature - tutored Amy in preparation for coursework and exams. Texts: Lord of The Flies and A View From The Bridge.

SKYPE - I teach Pietro (11) English as a Second Language weekly online.

Home Schooling - Inigo (6 when I started) had been getting reports of generally dropping behind in class work with a lack of concentration. I homeschooled him every Friday for two terms. He was having particular trouble in English and Maths. Inigo was struggling especially with English, in all areas, and was most behind with Spelling and Grammar. For him to engage, I had to be both creative (to keep him interested) but also quick as the plan was to get him into Kew Green Primary for the next academic year. We covered the basics of year 1 and ironed out any problems (also to give him confidence with the things he could do) and then went onto year 2. I would use a lot of what he was naturally interested in (football and particular comic book characters) in the teaching to keep his attention. With Maths, Inigo could do simple addition and subtraction but struggled when getting into 2 digits, multiplication, or any sort of wordy problem where the sum to be done was not absolutely clear. So, again, we covered the basics and then pushed on. He worked really hard and eventually we were looking forward to things he may encounter next year. At first Inigo was quite reluctant to work but I managed to win him over and build up a good rapport for productive days of homeschooling. Thankfully, he gained a place at Kew Green, and we were delighted! (Though it did mean, unfortunately, that he didn't need me any more...).

English for Foreign Learners - Helped 8 year old Augustinos (Greek) with reading and homework to improve English, as well as taking him on educational trips around London.

Drama (practical) - Coached Emily (21) and Hannah (20) with acting lessons in preparation for Drama School Entry auditions. Emily has now trained at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Hannah is training at LAMDA.

Voice and Elocution - Helped Law Student Amar (20) with speechmaking and projection for use in debating.

SEN - worked with Dean (20), a law student with dyslexia, upon exam preparation and practice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. Especially with the younger students I teach I think that lessons need to be fun to keep them excited about learning! I am 33 years old and have a 1st in French (BA Hons) from Nottingham University, with a distinction in spoken language. As well as a year spent working in Paris, I have worked in French speaking West Africa. I currently work part time for a charity and have a broad range of interests from gardening and cycling, to music and French culture (of course!).

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching French privately since April 2011. I primarily teach GCSE students, including students who struggle with French because of dyslexia. I have developed a variety of creative methods to make sure my teaching is as clear and as interesting as possible and have helped students improve their marks by up to 2 grades. I have taught to above A level standard and have a very high level of French.

At the start of 2017 I worked for two months as a supply teacher at the International School of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). As well as private tuition and teaching I have volunteered as a mentor for young offenders. During this time I tried to find ways to teach some of the young people basic skills without them even really realising it (i.e. teaching basic arithmetic through carpentry lessons).

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor teaching sessions to the needs and interests of my pupils. This influences both the content of the teaching, and teaching style. I use a range of teaching techniques and feel strongly that teaching should be fun as well as informative.

While I ensure that the material covered matches the GCSE/A Level syllabus, lessons can be tailored to other needs if the pupil is not studying for the purpose of exams.

I am 23 years old and I am in my final year at The University of Manchester where I am studying French and Italian. I have spent 6 months in Bologna in Italy, working in a private language school for those wished to learn either Italian or English. I worked as a copywriter for the school website, working in French, Italian and English. I also worked as a conversation tutor to those who wanted to learn English. I am now waiting on my results for a recognised qualification, a C1 CILS exam. In the same year, I lived in Paris for four months where I worked at ELLE, the well known women's fashion magazine, where I used solely French. I am very down to earth and my biggest passion is football, I enjoy a good movie and love a good comedy. If you feel more comfortable meeting in a neutral place, a coffee place or in the town centre that is fine by me. It is flexible. A clean criminal record and can boast a detention-less education!

Teaching Experience:

I now have teaching experience and I have shadowed those who have done this for a job. I have worked voluntarily in a school teaching beginner's Italian. Having already worked as a conversation tutor in a private school, I feel I would excel in giving private lessons, given the chance.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel every student works at their own pace, however it would not take me long to work out an approach which would realise the full potential of the tutee. I am patient and I can sympathise that learning a new language or topic can be frustrating.

I firmly believe that when it comes to exams, success lies in getting back to the original text. Teaching Experience:

My experience with tutoring has varied from one to one sessions, to small classes to assisting with written work online.

I specialise in getting students ready for dreaded exams, preparing them with the forensic knowledge of a text that is required to really succeed. This begins long before the revision process, with homework help and extra work. If you 'learn as you go', things will be much easier later on! I really care for the students I have worked with in the past and believe that everyone has it in them to achieve what they desire with regards to their education.

Equally my work in creative writing provides me with an innovative approach to English for younger students, allowing a more stimulating method of teaching.

I feel that having a good foundation to any subject is the way to go thus this would usually where I begin. If a student has a good understanding of the basics in any subject, more complicated details will seem much easier; like building blocks. After this, a focus on the weaker areas would then be applied to reinforce the student's understanding.

To begin, I start with revision techniques, worksheets and make new, very detailed, class/revision notes with my students. After developing a solid understanding, I begin with exam questions . Every lesson I give them homework. Essentially, what I offer are school lessons that are more detailed and focused than what they receive in school. Through these methods, I am able to thoroughly assess a student's abilities, increase them and hopefully up their grades.

My innovative pedagogies and teaching style and teacher friendly approach makes the concepts easy and passion and love for teaching has made me popular among my students

Hello, I am 21, live in Hull and have been playing the drums for around 5 years. I am currently studying Music Performance at university and have just finished my first year in Bristol. I have lots of experience playing live with various artists and bands. I play many styles and appreciate all music as an art. I am very passionate about teaching as I believe a good player doesn't make a good teacher. I believe in breaking things down to the simplest level to give the student the best foundation possible. My name is Annie and I am a nineteen year old student. I study French and Italian at University College London and am entering my second year. I have just received a high 2:1 in my end of year exams.

Teaching Experience:

As a language student I've done a lot of volunteering, mainly helping out in the younger years' language lessons at school doing oral and grammar work, but sometimes helping out my parents' friends' children in their preparation for GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm very enthusiastic about foreign languages and have knowledge of French, Italian and some German. I strongly believe that the world is only as big as the languages you speak! I'm very flexible with when and where lessons take place, though weekday evenings and weekends work best for me. I live in a maisonette in Camden with a light and spacious dining area where it will be possible to have lessons.
I'm prepared to tutor from complete beginner with no previous knowledge up to GCSE level. If you are a student at primary or secondary school, I'm happy to do lessons that help with your school work or target any specific weaknesses you feel you have. I've been teaching Spanish, English and Polish for about 6 years now. I used to teach adults in a Further Education Centre ( Polish and Spanish) and I helped in MFL department in a secondary school in Leeds.

Tutoring Approach:

Born in Edinburgh, I was raised in India and then Africa, before returning to the UK. Having lived in London and South East England since then, our family moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2012, primarily to raise our children in a less chaotic and more natural environment. We've had no regrets at all...and our various dogs and cats are similarly happy with the move!

I have always been passionate about English, from the weekly spelling tests and grammar exercises of primary school to the privilege of being taught at A Level by Tolkien's grandson. His vibrant, interactive approach shaped my ongoing learning and fired my imagination. After leaving Edinburgh University with a Masters in English Language and Literature, I went on to take a TEFL qualification and used this when travelling abroad in Turkey and throughout the Caribbean. I am delighted that I continue to work in the area of EAL with overseas students in British schools, and that technology has allowed me to work with individuals in their home countries, via Skype.

My love of English directed my career, working first at the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an independent theatre producer in London, and a theatre advertising executive on accounts such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats' and Cameron Mackintosh's 'Les Miserables'.

In 2008, my partner and I began the home education of our two children at primary stage. It was both challenging and inspirational and the experiences and knowledge I gained during those years - not purely academic, but also the different ways and methods of learning, the different developmental stages of children, the different learning styles of children - continue to inform my present day tutoring.

While home educating, and with my love of theatre, I founded an educational theatre group, Active Arts, with Margo Gunn, a teacher and director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. We worked with a wide age range of home educated and mainstream school children, providing workshops on various Shakespeare plays including 'Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Tempest' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Workshops were also designed specifically in support of GCSE/IGCSE work. As passionate advocates of Shakespeare, our approach was active and energetic, lifting Shakespeare off the page and introducing his plays, his language and his theatricality in an engaging and tangible manner. I was thrilled to be able to resurrect this work in the Highlands, initially at a local primary school, conducting 4 workshops for Primary 4-Primary 7, resulting in workshop presentations of 'The Tempest' and 'Macbeth'.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to home educating my two children and running Active Arts, my personal and professional lives led me into private tutoring and I have been a private tutor in English Language and Literature since 2009, working alongside children and young people from age 5 upwards, whether on general literacy issues, EAL or focusing specifically on exam work, from SATS, Nationals and GCSEs, through to A Levels, Highers and beyond. Tutees have been those in mainstream state schools, leading UK private schools and home education, following the English and Scottish curriculums, as well as IGCSEs with providers including Cambridge, OOL and Edexcel.

A number of my tutees have challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Tourette's and dyslexia, and the combination of experience, research and support courses have built my knowledge and understanding in these areas.

While I am registered with tutoring agencies, many of my tutees come via personal recommendation and I was delighted that tutees I had worked with in England chose to continue working with me via Skype after our move to Scotland.

Critically, I am PVG checked, and would be happy to provide evidence of this, together with references and qualification documentation.

Tutoring Approach:

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
My approach is not one of 'dip in and out' for an hour, or 'one size fits all', but of creating a relaxed, enjoyable, constructive atmosphere and building a relationship within which the young person's potential can be maximised, against a tailored, individual approach. While texts and challenges might be shared by various tutees, learning styles, atmospheres for learning, methods for learning, will always be different.
As importantly, my approach places great value on the parents, their involvement and their right and need for clear, ongoing and comprehensive communication. As such, I am often in regular contact with both my tutees and their parents, should they require it, outside of tutorials.

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
For many young people with whom I work, English and everything to do with it - their texts, their homework, punctuation, close reading, writing an essay - is a minefield. Often, what holds them back is a mixture of low confidence, fear of getting it wrong, and simply not having grasped the 'map' of how to 'do it'.

One of my main motivations, is to make English accessible; to take away the fear factor, to provide clear and simple structures, to grasp some key exam techniques, to demystify the exam paper, to clarify what the heck the exam paper is testing them on; to remind tutees that they have, naturally, learned one of the most difficult languages in the world and are fully capable of expressing themselves on paper, under pressure and against time.

However whimsical it may sound, as with many things in life, self-belief and understanding are powerful tools for success.


MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
The demand for private tutoring is growing exponentially. As The Telegraph reported in 2012, "more than a quarter of parents use private tutoring to supplement their children's education", spending "6bn a year in the UK." A double page spread in Femail, February 2015, states research that almost 1 in 4 children are now privately tutored, with pupils at private schools almost twice as likely to have private tutoring than those from state schools. Whatever explanation there is for this rise, cost to parents remains an obvious barrier to its provision.

I am, of course, a 'business', but I also firmly believe that access to tutoring should be made as wide as possible; education is a right and not a privilege. As such, while I have a standard rate for 1-1 tutoring, I am also very happy to discuss your requirements with you and to look at options available, such as small group tutoring where the cost per head can be significantly reduced.

I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

I start by explaining the meaning of mathematical functions or just give a summary of how this can be understood by relating it to daily life or through the use of logic. I also offer a past paper session, which includes me and the tutee solving a paper together that will help him advance his exam skills and improve their confidence.

Teaching Experience:

I studied Law at university and decided to make the move to education in 2013. I am now a fully qualified teacher working at school during the daytime, and offer tuition in the evenings after school. I have been tutoring for 4 years and have a great deal of experience.

I have knowledge of the national curriculum and different learning styles. I will plan lessons according to your child`s needs, as I do not believe in the `one brush fits all` approach.
