We live close to the 281 and 285 bus routes and an overground station.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in many London Schools and some in Berkshire. I was head of chemistry at Woolwich Polytechnic School. Most recently I have been lecturing in 3 colleges (Richmond, Kingston and Westminster ) Also ran the Foundation Chemistry course at Kingston University 2011/12.

Tutoring Approach:

I always tailor the tutorials to the specific needs of the individual Student. Access to the internet is essential these days to take advantage of the many online resources. I have been working as a teacher since graduating from the University of Oxford in 2007. I completed my PGCE Teacher Training in 2008, working in a range of contrasting environments. Hello there! My name is Sam and I'm a full time private tutor who has moved back to London this year. I completed a master's degree in maths at Leeds University and have been teaching ever since. I'm still very passionate about maths and am applying for a PhD to start in the next academic year. My personal time is taken up by studying the areas of maths I want to pursue (category theory and topos theory), learning more undergraduate maths courses so that I can tutor a wider number of areas, rock climbing, highlining and playing gigs. I also have a few maths related side projects such as co-writing a maths textbook aimed at those who have just finished their A levels, and error checking/giving feedback for a soon-to-be published book on topos theory by a researcher in Canada. Teaching Experience:

Teaching in a variety of different areas and environments has been my primary source of work for nearly 8 years now. For the past year and a half since I finished my masters I have been a full time private tutor of maths, predominately working in Leeds. The variety of levels I've had the opportunity to teach has been exceptional. I have taught at GCSE, As, A and further maths level for school level maths along with teaching at every level of undergraduate mathematics, teaching both on a one to one basis and conducting group tutorials with groups of 20 second year students. In particular, it has been deeply gratifying to help foreign students secure undergraduate positions and students with health issues who have needed extra assistance due to being absent from school.
During my degree, I held weekly tutorials for the lower years and gave informal guitar lessons. During my gap year, I worked for six days a week as a climbing instructor for most of the year and taught guitar on my day off. It was over my A level years that I got my first teaching experience as a piano teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

One great difference and indeed benefit of being a private tutor over a teacher is the need to adapt to each individual student. I am in the great position of being able to focus on one student per lesson, and I wouldn't be doing the best work I can if I didn't take advantage of this. My style of teaching therefore revolves around learning from each lesson about the student's evolving strengths and weaknesses, so that I can focus my lesson planning around them for our next meeting. Along with this, I try to encourage students with positive reinforcement. Frankly speaking, maths is a scary subject for a lot of people and I have found that increasing a student's confidence in their ability does wonders for their grades, proving their confidence right. Patience and understanding are key to this form of encouragement. On top of all this, I have to take into account what level the student is studying at. Maths is a very different beast every single year, the challenge of understanding quadratic equations for the first time is very different in nature to understanding quotient groups for the first time, and so I change how I teach depending on the level and age of the student.

Tutoring Approach:

As Stephen Krashen puts it, "Simply being a native speaker of a language does not in of itself qualify one as a teacher of that language. Conscious and extensive knowledge of grammar does not make one a language teacher either. Rather, the defining characteristic of a good teacher is someone who can make input comprehensible to a non-native speaker, regardless of his or her level of competence in the target language."

Your primary goal as a student is to learn a language. In that regard my primary job as a tutor is to guarantee the effectiveness of your learning process in relation to your needs and expectations.

How do I achieve that? First and most importantly by combining the right set of tools in my teaching repertoire:

- TPRS - Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling - is at the core of my methodology.

Traditionally there has been a prejudiced view that only certain people can 'do' languages. That only smart students can become proficient and that only the really smart can move on to advanced study. TPRS has demonstrated that the vast majority of students can achieve high levels of success at all levels of foreign language study, and that acquiring a second language isn't nearly as difficult as we teachers sometimes make it. TPRS is making particular headway in language classrooms across the US and considerable research has been done and published on its efficacy.

TPRS works because it is brain-friendly and multi-sensory methodology, fitting the needs of various learning styles. Students develop a real "ear for the language," learning to listen and respond to what sounds right.

- Teaching grammar in meaningful context from day one
The focus is first and foremost on the message, with realistic expectations (level-appropriate) for grammatical accuracy. My philosophy is that of John DeMado: "Linguistic accuracy is a destination, not a point of departure." My way of teaching grammar is based on usefulness, frequency of use and level appropriateness.

- Tremendous amount of Comprehensible Input.

This approach supports the language acquisition theory by Stephen Krashen, who says: "We acquire language in only one way, when we understand messages, that is when we obtain comprehensible input."

- Reading as a major component of learning process.

In his book, The Power of Reading: Insights into the Research, 2nd edition, (p. 37) Stephen Krashen states, "Studies showing that reading enhances literacy development lead to what should be an uncontroversial conclusion: Reading is good for you. The research, however, supports a stronger conclusion: Reading is the only way we become good readers, develop good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammatical competence, and the only way we become good spellers."

- Teaching Russian to heritage speakers as a language arts/social science.

I later formed my own company, specialising in developing applications for small- to medium-sized companies. I used the logical skills developed through studying Mathematics in my work as Business Analyst and Project Manager.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in tailoring the teaching approach to each student's needs and individual learning style. For school children and university students, I discuss their aims with them - and with their parents, if required - to determine what topics need additional tuition and then to work out the appropriate programme. I advocate continuous assessment to measure the student's progress. Closer to exams, the pupils will work through old papers. At this stage, strategic choices may be made to focus on the pupils strengths.
For adults, I work with them to develop a personalised programme to enable them to achieve their goals. This may mean working towards a specific qualification.
I have great passion for and a deep knowledge of Mathematics. My aim is always to get my students to enjoy the subject. Most importantly, they are encouraged to gain confidence in their own abilities by building on what they feel comfortable with. I believe that the right teacher can undo wrong learning very quickly.

My 10 year tutoring experience is vast, ranging form tutoring at seminar level at university, to private home tuition for KS3, GCSE, and A Level. I have also set up tuition programmes at state schools in London. I have a specialist area of tuition, namely exam preparation.

Tutoring Approach:

Many people can attempt to teach maths, however it takes a certain type of person to communicate maths effectively. Over the years, i have collected information and experienced the fact that students need to learn more applied maths techniques for exams. Its simply not good enough to just learn how to solve and equation, or do some long multiplication. The mindset and understanding of problems in context are key to success, and this is what i teach. Circa 200 students have passed through my professional tuition service, and I could count on one hand the amount that didn't achieve a C grade or higher. Most achieve B or higher.

I have a passion for Science and hope to go into laboratory research. In August I will be finishing my Masters in Biological Sciences at the University of Manchester.
In June 2015 I finished my BSc in Biology from Imperial College London with First Class Honours. . My A level grades were A* A A in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics (respectively). I am committed and enthusiastic in everything I do and I love new experiences and challenges.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over 4 years and have had over a dozen students, ranging from 4-28 years of age.

In addition to my professional tutoring:
-In the lab I teach new practical techniques and knowledge to students and my peers
-I am training to become an assistant instructor in Women's Self Defence with the charity that I do martial arts with
-I have a younger sister whom I have helped with academia since she was a child, improving her knowledge and confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is something that I thoroughly enjoy. It makes me feel like I have made a difference when I am able to help someone better understand and apply something that, up until then, teachers or peers have failed to do.
A large part of my role as a tutor, particularly with younger students, is to improve their self-confidence, I give them additional knowledge, confidence to apply and convey it and confidence to ask questions.

I believe that the path to exam success involves three things:
-Thorough knowledge of subject material
-Exam technique (what to write/say to get the marks)
-On-the-day performance

I feel that my job as a tutor is to assess these points in my students and to help them with whatever stage they require to boost their performance.

YOUNGER STUDENTS: when tutoring children I find that it is important to continuously change the activity or topic every 5-10 minutes so that the student is engaged and gets the most out of the lessons. I have learned many of the techniques for tutoring children during my training and experience as a Young Scout Leader.
In my lessons I play games based on the material and use tools such as white boards, the feedback I receive is that my students really enjoy and look forward to our lessons.

SECONDARY LEVEL & OLDER STUDENTS: I feel it is important for my students to understand how the topic they are learning fits into the wider picture. Often I find that the reason my students struggled with some subject areas is that they were not taught the broader concepts or knowledge was assumed, this is particularly common with Chemistry. I aim to fill this gap so that students learn and understand the syllabus learning points as opposed to just memorizing them.
With Maths I go through many practice questions with my students. I set a question and we will work on it together or independently, then I will give the answer and show my working. My students find it very helpful that I work alongside them and provide them with a full solution including method, as opposed to just an answer.

Personal Description:
I am a student at the University of Bath and am currently in my third year of a four year course, studying BA French, Italian and European Studies (History, Politics, Culture and Literature of Europe). In compliance with my degree, this year must be spent abroad and so I have just finished my summer employment at a private language summer school in Belgium, working as an English teacher.

I teach French on Twitter, where I have over 16,000 followers and regularly respond to questions and update my page daily with useful phrases, every day speech and more complex language issues.

My passion for learning and teaching languages stems from when I moved to France at the age of 13 with my parents, not one of us spoke a word of the language - other than the vague memories of the beginnings of GCSE, with the only words springing to mind being 'ruler' and 'pencil'. It's really just not ideal when you're actually in the centre of a new culture, and not in a classroom.

I didn't have friends for the first few months there because of the language barrier (it didn't help either that I was home-schooled so it was incredibly hard for me to even meet people!). So I just had to learn the language. In teaching myself it, I know what works, I know the easiest ways to memorise words and phrases, I know what to do and what will be easiest for you.

After three years of living in France, my parents decided to move back to the UK where I continued my language studies at a scholastic level; completing my AS Level and my A2 Level in French, gaining an A in both.

My passion for Italian stems from my father's family being Sicilian. We moved there, also when I was 13, however, sadly we only spent a very brief time there - it was a spontaneous country-hop so we really just were not prepared for the culture shock. Again, none of us spoke the language, so I began teaching myself and then continued again when I came back to the UK to study.

English is my native language and I have taken my A Levels in English Language.

Teaching Experience:

While teaching, my classes would change weekly, so during my stay there I gained the experience of teaching 9-17 year olds, with English levels ranging from absolute beginner, A1 to almost native, C1.

I gained many skills, including, but not exclusive to, classroom management, lesson planning, evaluating language levels at the beginning and end of the stay of the children, meeting parents and giving feedback and of course, teaching full days; my teaching day would even include private one-to-one lessons. I would often deal with situations that required being able to think innovatively, without guidance and under pressure so I have gained a considerable amount of confidence and self-discipline due to my work there and I have improved my time keeping and organisational skills.

I have also been privately tutoring children, from 11 to 14 years old, for over two years now, via Skype. So even if the distance seems too far - teaching via Skype is an option.

I tutored one of my students through her French GCSE and she gained an A*. I was always available to prepare her - even the day before her exams. She only ever felt confident to go into any of the modules (be it speaking or writing).

I really care for the children that I tutor and am proud to say I have been there to help them with all aspects of their schooling, from homework help, to exam preparations, extra work and even life lessons - I'm very personable, patient and overall positive and happy so am always willing to give advice and have really become a friend to my tutees. We've also worked on all subjects, everything from science, to history, to music, to teaching the time and additional mathematics help.
