Personal Description:
As a school student, I was a confirmed hater of Science! I am still haunted by the drafty labs and memories of sitting in silence on wobbly stools taking notes from ancient text books and carrying out odd practicals with the ubiquitous Potato tuber. It wasn't until I started studying Science as an adult learner in an FE college, where I was taught by inspiring and enthusiastic lecturers, who illustrated important concepts with analogies, diagrams and genuinely interesting practicals, that I began to realise that science was relevant to me and was "my thing".

This experience has stayed with me and has given me a passion for making science exciting and largely the reason that I chose a career in personal tutoring.

I am a professional full-time private tutor. I have recently graduated with an MSc in Science (Medicinal Chemistry and science education studies). I have also graduated with a First class honours degree in Life Sciences (Open) and I have completed a Post-graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education, specialising in Science Education.

Teaching Experience:

I specialised in A level and GCSE tuition and I have extensive experience working with a wide range of students, from those who are struggling and need help understanding the key concepts to those who do well in science but need support to develop the exam technique that will get them the top grades.

I have tutored students working towards exams with all the major exam boards, including AQA (AS, A2 Biology and Chemistry, GCSE core science, GCSE Additional Science, GCSE Biology and Chemistry), OCR (AS, A2 Biology and Chemistry, Salter's Chemistry, 21st Century Science GCSE), WJEC (A level Biology), EDEXCEL (AS and A2 Biology and Chemistry, GCSE, IGCSE)

I also have much experience working with students entering for exams as external candidates and I can provide assistance in making arrangements for this.

In my professional life prior to tuition, I was employed as a company trainer in the catering industry, working with newly employed staff on an individual basis to help them develop the skills and knowledge relevant to their new positions and training existing staff to take on more senior roles. This gave me extensive experience of one-to-one tuition and creating individual training strategies.

Tutoring Approach:

When I begin tutoring a new student, I spend some time getting to know the individual and we begin by discussing their current feelings about Science and what they would like to get out of the tutorial sessions. I also carry out an assessment of the individual's learning style (sounds scary, but it's not, it's just a short quiz). By discovering how the individual learns best, I can structure the tutorials so that they are composed of activities that will be both effective and enjoyable. In all cases, I endeavor to make Science enjoyable and relevant to the individual student as possible and tailor the explanations to their particular interests.

As well as providing subject-specific tuition, I place particular emphasis on the development of study and exam skills. Where relevant, this includes teaching essay writing skills, how to revise, how to approach exams and specific scientific skills, such as data analysis and evaluation, which are often assessed in course work. I also offer tutorial sessions which focus just on study skills, for those who are comfortable with their subject knowledge but need extra support in these areas.

As well as traditional face to face sessions, I also offer fully online lessons using skype and an interactive whiteboard which allows me to interact with students in the same way as in a face-to-face lesson. If you are interested in online tuition but are not sure how it would work please contact me to discuss.

Personal Description:
I am currently a third year medical student from the University of Newcastle but I have also graduated in Human Sciences from the University of Durham back in 2007. During the holidays I live in London. I have a wealth of experience working with children and teenagers from being a Christmas grotto host at Harrods to volunteering at Great Ormond Street Hospital for over a year.

My work ethic when I was younger was not as disciplined as it is now and I am aware of the difficulties that students can face when it comes to learning new concepts and hope to help tutees overcome these barriers.

Having applied to grammar school, university and medical school I am aware of all the application processes and interviewing processes.

I am outgoing and to keep active I play hockey for my local club and my university college.

Teaching Experience:

I have helped younger family members to grasp ideas and offer new ways of learning if they were struggling. I have had job roles in the past training new employees up and feel this is a mode of teaching.

I would like to extend my higher knowledge to helping students achieve top grades in their GCSE's and A-levels

Within my current course we have peer to peer teaching which has proved to be a very effective learning tool.

Tutoring Approach:

Different individuals have different learning styles, I for one am more visual. I would try to get an understanding of how the tutee learns best, and encourage them to engage in activities that would help them. For instance, if they are visual learners then get them to draw things out.

Encouragement and patience is of great importance and listening to the needs of the individual.

My role as a tutor would be to guide and encourage the tutee to reach their educational and professional goals.

Personal Description:
Hola, I am a University Educated Native Spanish Speaker residing permanently in the UK. I am a professional translator with years of experience in translating documents from English into Spanish.
I find it very rewarding and I enjoy helping others to learn a new language or improve their knowledge and skills they have already got.

Teaching Experience:

Before coming to England I worked as an English Teacher at a Secondary School in Cuba, my native country for 1 year and taught the Spanish Language to English speaking adults who visited the country as tourists. Since I started tutoring in England I have been teaching the language to adults and children which have given me more practical experience and ideas for using new and different ways to teach according to their personal skills and aims. I have good rapport with my students and I encourage them to review at home what they have already learned in my lessons for them to be able to reach their goals quicker and move a step forward. I also use a good and useful activity book which helps the students to do practical exercises during the lessons and for homework if they wish.

Tutoring Approach:

I design my lessons specifically for you, working at your speed and focusing on what you prefer the most, speaking, pronunciation, reading, listening, writing, vocabulary, grammar, conversation or other. I will develop a learning plan to suit each person's needs, goals and abilities. I enjoy teaching people of all ages and levels, beginners or more advanced.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified English teacher. I am currently working as a tutor within schools, supply teacher and privately teaching English. I have been teaching for over ten years, eight years as a full time teacher and two years as a Tutor/Supply Teacher. I hold a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a PGCE English and a 2:1 BA (Honours) degree in English. I hold current CRB/police check and I am eligible to work in the UK.

I have demonstrated a flexible approach to cater for individual learning needs and to differentiate the work accordingly, ensuring the personalisation of teaching and learning. I have created resources and effective strategies to support pupils. I have extensive experiences marking GCSE coursework, assessments, GCSE speaking and listening tests, assessments including Controlled Assessment tests. I have organised and participated in workshops to support planning lessons, class activities etc.

In regards to voluntary work, I have spent a lot of time as a voluntary youth support worker at the Saint Patrick's Youth Club Letterkenny between 1984 and 1990. I have organised table tennis competitions and other sporting activities at the club. I created a special youth club magazine and was one of the co-ordinators of an exchange trip with a German youth club in 1986. As a UNICEF volunteer, I have also organised a special charity fundraising event for UNICEF. In 1988, I helped with the visit of the UNICEF Special Ambassador, Miss Audrey Hepburn to a special UNICEF event at the Westbury Hotel.

Over the years I have played a significant role in an intervention strategy of borderline pupils at key stage 3 and 4. I have extensive experience supporting pupils on a One to One basis and in small groups. I have taught mixed ability pupils in years 7, 8 and 9. I have provided appropriate advice to learners and helped many pupils reach their target level grades.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English for over ten years, eight years as a full time English teacher. I have taught very successfully in two schools during this period and have received positive feedback from parents, colleagues and from Ofsted (who rated me as a good teacher). I am passionate about teaching and committed to helping students make real academic progress. I have helped many pupils reach their target level grades. I have excellent subject knowledge and a broad understanding of the curriculum. I have demonstrated a flexible approach to cater for individual learning needs and to differentiate the work accordingly, ensuring the personalisation of teaching and learning. I am supportive and sensitive to the students/tutees needs. I am able to work with tutees with special educational needs as I will differentiate resources accordingly. I generally agree and set targets, which are regularly checked to ensure progress towards the learning outcome. In tutoring, resources are tailored to meet the learner's needs.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring sessions are interactive, fun and stimulating as I believe it is important to help students explore and understand their skills and knowledge base. I encourage pupils to work harder by helping them build their confidence. I support each student in all aspects of learning, including homework support, speaking, listening, reading, writing, practical and functional skills, students undertake assessments to improve both their subject knowledge and examination results.

I try to be creative, but once an idea is understood, I think the key emphasis for the pupil is to practice to re-enforce confidence. I ensure that work is clearly structured and organised to allow the child not feel overwhelmed, but to understand it clearly. I work well with challenging children, with learning disabilities and with those pupils with behavioural problems. I am understanding and patient tutor who encourages all pupils to make a bigger effort.

I love this profession because you never stop learning and it is wonderful to be in this fortunate position to share my passion for this wonderful subject. I believe a tutor has to be flexible to the childs need.

Personal Description:
I have recently graduated from the University of Warwick with a B.A. in politics. I have an excellent academic record; I received firsts in three of the eight modules that made up my degree, my second year work was praised for its excellence by the examinations board and my contributions to seminars were praised by lecturers. Prior to this I completed A-levels in economics, history and politics (all at grade A) at Pate's Grammar School. I have a comprehensive knowledge of and passion for the subject area; I have had work experience with the BBC's Sunday Politics and am the author the "Young Citizens Agenda for the UK".

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience assisting younger family members with GCSE and A-level work. I was the person to come to at school for A-level politics advice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will work to understand the specific needs of the individual tutee. This will involve closely examining the syllabus of the specific course which they are undertaking set against what they need to do to produce work that will get into the better grade boundaries. This will require working with the tutee to understand their own learning style so they are able to do this. But most importantly I hope to generate an genuine enthusiasm for politics and current affairs.

Personal Description:
As a practical enthusiastic, determined and, very academic individual I keep abreast with contemporary events. I read on daily basis, it is a habit and an addiction as well as, subscribing to several Science journals (Royal society of chemistry and Biomedical science journals) and magazines, keeping up to date with current developments in the scientific world. I am very open minded friendly and easy to talk to.

I have assisted friends and families with all sort of coursework from international business management, Human Resources, health and social care, early years foundation child care courses, Health and social care, nursing and GeneralSciences. One thing about academic exercises is that knowledge is transferable. The skills acquired in one area can be transferred to another subject. What is required is, understanding the concepts, have the structure laid out, have the right evidences to back up one's assertion, provide appropriate examples to support literature and make your literature flow in a coherent and consistent manner using suitable connectives.

There is a first time for everything, try a tutor out and don't get too paranoid until you test one. It is always natural to have hesitations until you become comfortable with someone new.

Teaching Experience:

My experience in working in 6 different schools has enriched my perspective towards education. I have witnessed very good teachers and terrible one's with poor teaching skills. I have worked as a science technician and teaching assistant directly involved teaching lessons when teachers are absent. I am familiar with all the various school academic curriculum for AQABA, OCR, EDEXCEL etc. I am abreast with the latest curriculum and work closely with teachers providing them with latest science experiment and practical in order to enrich the understanding of students.

My laboratory background gives me the advantage to connect abstract academic theories to reality. Few teachers actually have practical experience and rarely integrate practical in their lessons. I have worked as a laboratory technician and tutor in Biology and Chemistry laboratory in several colleges. During my periods as laboratory technician I do engage one to one with students to sharpen their understanding of the subject matter.

In addition to that, I have worked in 2 different NHS TRUST my current involves analysing biological specimens, investigating diseases and up to date with current developments in Science.

Students struggling with their dissertation and course works always benefit tremendously from my assistance. I also teach classes when lecturers are absent. I am an experienced home to home private tutor, and teach have taught primary, secondary to university students. I have tutored numerous students from various backgrounds across the length an breadth of London. I am adaptable and fits quickly in any given environment and a people's person. I have no problem travelling distances within London. Currently, I am writing a book for practical and experimental science for teachers, tutors and students.

I understand that every student is unique and vary from their method of learning, absorbing and understanding teaching materials. The different types of learners range from kinaesthetic, visual and auditory. During my tutoring session I implement all three method of tutoring and then instinctively monitor and gauge student learning approach. I adjust and adapt to student tutoring needs, then reinforce the style that is most suitable.

I am currently working with the NHS as scientist taking patient's blood samples etc.

Tutoring Approach:

Due to my background as a laboratory technician, my approach is both practical, kinaesthetic, auditory, visual and theoretical. I will ensure my student understand the subject topic in depth by creating scenario's, diagrams, examples that matches the theoretical concept being discussed. I will keep prompting the student and using different learning approaches to engage the student to enhance assimilation of the learning material. As an experienced private tutor I have in possession numerous scientific diagrams, lecture notes, and power point presentation which I use in my tutoring. During and after tutoring students receive materials which continues to assist them in their studies. I use laptops, tablets, videos and diagrams to enhance and maximize teaching experience.

I have also worked with Local Government Chemist (LGC) the biggest private scientific firm in Europe with several outlets in the world. I have experienced hands on and progressive scientific developments and several analytically scientific progress. These include detection of cocaine, heroin and other drugs in body fluids such as urine, saliva and blood samples.

I demonstrate Scientific experiment and practical alongside teachers. My style of teaching is relating theory to practice. The advantage of this style of teaching is it unifies theory to practice, and hence, consolidating and building scientific confidence.

Personal Description:
I am a University graduate with a first class degree in Politics from Northumbria University. I completed a very well-received dissertation on the subject of citizenship in America. I plan on beginning a Master's degree in Political Theory at the University of Manchester in the next academic year.

Teaching Experience:

While taking my A levels I was a prefect, and my duties included helping English students in years seven and eight with their work. My Politics A level was self-taught with two other students. While at University I have served on the committee of the Debating society, where aside from helping students express their ideas, the training also often involved providing concise explanations of current events and related political theories.
I have worked with the veteran's charity Forward Assist, teaching political understanding and general knowledge to veterans to help them in civilian life.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring is tailored according to the student's needs - whether these are to gain a broad understanding of a subject, prepare for a specific assessment in a particular area, or to develop skills applicable to many subject areas.

Personal Description:
Hello, I'm Sam. I am a 19 year old second year English student at UCL. I attended All Saints Blackheath primary school and Dartford Grammar School secondary school and sixth form. At Dartford I received a fantastic education allowing me to achieve 11 A*s and 1 A at GCSE, and 43/45 points in the IB (the equivalent of 4 A*s at A-Level). The IB required that I took 6 subjects - rather than 4 at A-Level - which was wonderful as I was allowed to keep my learning as broad as possible. I have a specialist knowledge of the IB and so offer tutoring all the subjects I studied at that level (including Classics which is not an option on this website).

During term time I live in Kings Cross, North London. I am happy to travel to surrounding boroughs. I am very flexible in regards to when the tutoring sessions would take place. During the summer, winter and easter breaks I live in Blackheath, South East London, but will still be able to travel to you.

Besides from my studies I enjoy a variety of sports (swimming, tennis, football), as well as writing, reading, acting, and politics. I also play lead guitar in a band with three close friends which gives me a great sense of creative fulfilment and joy.

Teaching Experience:

From October 2015 to May 2016 I taught a student GCSE English language through this website. English is not my student's first language so it was very important to create a comfortable atmosphere where he felt able to share his thoughts and ask questions. I witnessed an increased confidence in his grasp of the English language and in his personal interactions, helping the student achieve a C grade in both his written coursework and his speaking and listening. Before I began tutoring my student was on an E; he has now passed the course and will attend his college of choice.

From January to April 2016 I volunteered at a local comprehensive in Stoke Newington through Action Tutoring, teaching English Literature to a year 11 student bi-weekly. This presented a different challenge to my private tutee, with the student aiming to turn his grade from B to A. I helped hone his essay planning and structuring skills, and encouraged him not to be shy and express his creativity. I received a card of commendation from my coordinator who agreed that my student's writing had shown significant improvement.

During Sixth Form I was involved in a volunteering scheme called VSU with a local primary school in Dartford. This involved teaching children aged 8-10 certain sports and games as well as helping them with homework. Apart from being great fun this gave me good practice of communicating with younger age groups.

During sixth form I attended History Club, helping year 7s, 8s and 9s plan their research as well as sharing knowledge from my IB history course. Since leaving for university, Dartford Grammar have twice invited me back to advise current sixth formers on their university prospects and provide first-hand knowledge and experience of what to expect at university.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been incredibly lucky to have a series of hard-working, caring and genuinely inspiring teachers throughout my education. This has had a great influence on me, demonstrating how powerful a tool education can be. I have always wanted a job that in some way benefits society or helps others. This is why I am very enthusiastic to tutor.

My approach to tutoring is personal and dependent on what the student and student's parents are looking for. I am open to change and quick to adapt my style of teaching to the student's specific needs. If the student is preparing for an exam I will look at the components of the exam in specific detail. For example if tutoring GCSE English I would pay close attention to the assessed texts and poetry. If tutoring IB Latin I would prepare lessons on Latin language as well as analysing the themes and characterisation of set texts. As I have completed my GCSE and IB exams very recently, my knowledge of the courses is still fresh in my mind and I have a range of coursework, essays and notes to draw on. However although the final grade is important, I am very keen that the student enjoys learning. I am happy to look at external materials, in addition to the curriculum, that may be of interest to the student.

The lessons would be conversational and relaxed; I want the student to feel comfortable and happy. I am sympathetic and patient with people. I have worked very hard throughout my education and I would carry this work-ethic over into the preparation and organisation of the lessons.

Personal Description:
As a child, I learned by being told, by beatings, shaming and a strict examination system. As you can imagine I didn't learn much that I could later apply to my academic life. As a result, I became an inveterate learner, always interested in learning the next thing. At one point, the drive to learn was because I didn't see myself as being good enough. Later on, that drive became an interest in discovering my own abilities as well as about helping others. I have now learned so much about how not to teach that I have gained good insight into how learning happens. I am keen to ensure all my learners learn how to learn and understand how to apply what they discover.

Teaching Experience:

My background is in teaching, training and facilitation. I have over 25 years experience of teaching in different forms having worked within primary, secondary and further education settings. I am an NVQ / TAQA assessor and trained and assessed Parenting Practitioners and other candidates up to Level 5 in Health & Social Care. I have specialist skills in Personal Effectiveness subjects such as Report Writing, Speed Reading, Presentation Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a private tutor used to be the preserve of only those with the highest qualifications and the greatest experience. Now all that's changed.

However good a tutor is, the learner needs to be astute in order know if the tutor is a good match for her / him. Importantly, making the right choice can be complex.
Here are three tips to help you decide if I am or someone else is right for you. The following tips describe how I teach and how I will enable you to be an independent learner.

1. Look for a tutor who can teach you how to learn
Here's a funny thing… learners study a subject, sometimes for months and years and can come away with no long-term memory of the underpinning principles of the subject. As disturbing, they have no ongoing understanding of the subject. They are unable to apply what they tried to learn. This is easily resolved by clearing up past issues with learning. In Applied Scholastics it is now well known that if as a learner, you are helped to do so, you can learn any subject. This is central to how I teach.

2. Look for tutors who understand the main barriers to learning and can help you overcome them
There are three main barriers to study. They relate to confusion over an idea, missing out critical steps and having unclear ideas about the subject under study. Gaining a day to day facility with overcoming those barriers is key to effective and efficient study. I use these methods to help my own reading and study. I will introduce them to you so that you can use them too.

3. Look for tutors who can help you find the information you need so that you keep expanding your own understanding of the subject

Sometimes, a learner during a course of study will find that s/he wants to give up. Have you ever experienced this? Whenever that happens it is because there is something - an idea, a symbol, a form of punctuation, the use of a word, or something else - that you did not understand. Without the proper factual information on this and without the correct knowledge of why and how this happens, the learner will struggle. Without knowing what remedies to apply, the learner will give up.

When you study, you are investing time and energy. In this case, money too. If you want to discover more about how you learn, what your barriers to study are and how to understand more, you will benefit from being an independent learner. That will repay your investment.

Those three critical points should help you decide if I could be right for you. They briefly describe the way in which I would work with you and enable you to be an independent learner.

Personal Description:
Hello, I am a GB skeleton athlete currently on a sabbatical from my job as an exercise physiologist. My expertise is in sport science, specialising in physiology which I have a MSc degree from Loughborough University. I am living in Bath again (I did my first degree here) in order to train full-time for skeleton, with the goal being to compete at the Olympic Games in 2022.

I have plenty of ambition, drive and determination and love to inspire people to work hard to achieve their goals. So far I have achieved all the goals I set for myself since school e.g. studying at university, working in elite sport.

I studied maths, english, science, history, geography, P.E., textiles and French for GCSE and got A and A* grades. At A level I studied biology,P.E. and history and received AAB respectively. I have a upper second class honours BSc in sport and exercise science from The University of Bath and a first class MSc in exercise physiology.

Teaching Experience:

I was a class tutor at Loughborough College for three months after graduating from Loughborough University. This involved working closely with pupils to assist them with their school work across a number of subjects at GCSE level.

Part of my role as a sport scientist was to educate athletes on a number of subjects which would improve their performance. This involved constructing and delivering presentations to groups of adults as well as GCSE/A level students. I also regularly worked on a one to one basis to educate athletes on ways they can improve their performance. In both instances I always use examples to demonstrate the point I am making and improve understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a supportive tutor, who encourages students to find the solutions to their problems. I aim to facilitate learning, not spoon feed. I'm also keen to focus on the bigger picture in order to motivate students, for example reminding them that the work is important so they can pass their exams to get into university. I find having a goal is a strong motivator and also the practise of setting goals puts students in good stead for the future.

I take a kind and patient approach to tutoring. I like to encourage students to adopt a growth mindset whereby they do not fear failure and value hard work and effort.
