I am a local university English lecturer and professional writer based on the western borders of Coventry, close to Meriden and Birmingham International Airport.

I currently tutor a range of students in GCSE, AS and A2 English Language and Literature (part-time evenings and weekends).

I am familiar with English coursework texts and anthologies and tutor students for both GCSE and IGCSE English Language and Literature.

I have successfully coached students for entrance exams to Warwick, King's High, Bablake, King Henry and Solihull Schools in Coventry and Warwickshire.

I attained my English degree (BA Honours) from Stirling University in Scotland.

In addition to my English degree, I have a second degree in Education (1st class Honours) from Stirling University, which allows me to teach Mathematics, Sociology and Politics.

I have been teaching English and Creative Writing for 15 years.

I have also run a variety of creative writing and travel writing workshops at Warwick University.

I was one of the 'pilot tutors' on Warwickshire County Council's Tutoring Programme for Children in Care, tutoring teenagers across Warwickshire in literacy.

On December 20th, 2008, I was awarded the accolade 'BEST NEW TUTOR 2008' from Fleet Tutors, an independent tutoring agency based in Fleet, Hampshire.

Tutoring Approach:

My style is engaging and enthusiastic. I have a passion for creative writing.

I tutor in pupils' homes in the evenings and selected weekends, and set weekly written tasks to monitor students' progress.

A normal GCSE lesson lasts one hour, but I can offer 90-minute or two-hour sessions for AS/A2 students.

I also specialise in creative writing workshops, and am a published author, contributing to a number of paid-for UK magazines.
I also tutor online via SKYPE.

I have had excellent recent successes, with 10 students gaining A* in GCSE English, and five students achieving A grades at A level.

In 2016, one of my GCSE students scored an A* and was one of the top-performing 1,000 students in the country.

All of my A2 and AS students scored A grades in 2016.

I have also successfully tutored many students who have been accepted into Solihull School and Bablake School in Coventry.

I am 23 years old and I am in my final year at The University of Manchester where I am studying French and Italian. I have spent 6 months in Bologna in Italy, working in a private language school for those wished to learn either Italian or English. I worked as a copywriter for the school website, working in French, Italian and English. I also worked as a conversation tutor to those who wanted to learn English. I am now waiting on my results for a recognised qualification, a C1 CILS exam. In the same year, I lived in Paris for four months where I worked at ELLE, the well known women's fashion magazine, where I used solely French. I am very down to earth and my biggest passion is football, I enjoy a good movie and love a good comedy. If you feel more comfortable meeting in a neutral place, a coffee place or in the town centre that is fine by me. It is flexible. A clean criminal record and can boast a detention-less education!

Teaching Experience:

I now have teaching experience and I have shadowed those who have done this for a job. I have worked voluntarily in a school teaching beginner's Italian. Having already worked as a conversation tutor in a private school, I feel I would excel in giving private lessons, given the chance.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel every student works at their own pace, however it would not take me long to work out an approach which would realise the full potential of the tutee. I am patient and I can sympathise that learning a new language or topic can be frustrating.

I graduated in 2006 from Queen Mary University of London after achieving a 2:1 in English and History. It took me a couple of years before I found my passion for teaching, a passion that was made even more acute, by having worked in more conventional jobs, which I didn't enjoy after leaving university. I have a passion for horses and horse riding and have a young horse, I love writing, reading, cooking and walking my dogs as well as teaching. I love living in the country and taking part in all aspects of country life.

Teaching Experience:

I began my career teaching in Andover as a full time primary school teacher. I started off in Year 5 and progressed into Year 3. I have tutored a variety of different children:
Child 1: 2010- present, 16 year old (Autistic), GCSE Geography, English Literature, Science, Maths and Environmental Science. B-Tec in Countryside management.
Child 2: April 2011-November 2011, 10 year old, Year 6 Maths, 11+ preparation.

I have been a freelance educational journalist for three years now writing for `Primary teacher Update` magazine which is a very reflective exercise and I thoroughly enjoy it.
In September 2012 I moved to a school in Ringwood and was the Year 3 Year Leader covering a maternity position.
(September 2013) As I`ve moved into my fifth year as a qualified teacher, I have now settled into a different school in Ringwood and am back in Year 5 enjoying supporting a wide variety of different abilities of children.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very individualised style and approach to tutoring. I believe that each child is completely unique and that if you find the right key, whether its jumping on a trampoline whilst reciting their times tables or making a colourful mind map to understand how the bodies immune system works, you can unlock their understanding. I enjoy tutoring because you see children really blossom and the progress they make with one on one support is truely astounding and lovely to be a part of. Personal Description:
I am an Economics graduate from Liverpool University and taught economics and business studies in secondary schools for over 10 years. Prior to teaching I worked in advertising for 10 years. I now focus on tutoring economics and business studies students and I also own two online businesses. I live in Bristol, am married with 3 children and I am passionate about helping young people achieve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

I taught Economics and Business Studies in state schools for 10 years and have also tutored students for many years. My students consistently over-perform - all students I tutored in 2015 achieved at least a grade B and improved at least one grade since I started working with them. Several improved by 3 or more grades. For example, one recent A2 Economics student went from a grade E in his January mock exam to an A* overall in June, whilst another A2 student went from a grade B to a grade A overall and achieved 100% on an AS resit paper. I am an experienced Economics examiner and am familiar with all the major exam boards. I can supply references on request (some are listed on my profile) and I have a current CRB.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always begin by discussing my tutee's individual requirements and areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. Once these have been established, I usually start with a return to basics, teaching economic or business theory that may not have been fully understood by the student. Once they are comfortable with the concepts, I will look to build in higher order analytical and evaluation skills as well as providing real world examples. I will use a variety of teaching methods to stretch students, backed up with exam technique by practising past papers. I am happy to teach face to face for local students, however I often teach online via Skype, using a whiteboard facility, which my students can also access. This makes the sessions as interactive as meeting face to face and it also means I can tutor students who don't live in Bristol. I always encourage students to provide feedback so that they receive maximum benefit from their teaching.

''I really cannot overstate the amount Ian has helped me out with my AQA Economics A-level with AQA. After missing the most part of an entire term of Economics teaching at my school essentially all of my Economics knowledge came from Ian for my A2 exams. I had originally achieved a C-grade in AS Economics, but after Ian teaching me for only two school terms I was able to achieve two A's at 174/200 UMS in my A2 exams (the criteria for earning an A* at A-level being 180/200 UMS). "Matt only got an E grade in his February A2 mock exam and the school predicted he would get a C grade at A2. With the significant assistance from Ian, Matt achieved an A* at A2. In his other two A levels, Matt achieved Bs (he also had tutors for these). There are several reasons why Ian made the difference: 1.Being taught on Skype. Matt was initially very apprehensive about being taught on Skype rather than in person. But Skype proved really beneficial. Firstly it enabled Matt to fit in tuition at times that would just not have been possible if travel had been involved. Secondly it enabled Matt to have additional lessons when he had spare time. 2. Focussing on how to structure essay answers. The school just didn't put anywhere near enough emphasis on this crucial area. 3. Essay marking. A key aspect of A2 is exam practice. I lived and worked in France from 1982 to 1985. I have always spent the summer holidays from the age of 12 living with a French family and feel equally at home in France or England. From school age I knew I wanted to travel and find new places learning the language as I went. I love to communicate and enjoy meeting people and getting to know them and want to pass on the enthusiasm I feel for all things French. I enjoy reading, music, films and French food isn't bad either.

Teaching Experience:

My initial teaching experience was with 'Le Club Francais' where I was in charge of a weekly after school club of 5 - 11 year olds. This was great fun as learning was channelled through games.
My friend's son had extra lessons after school to pass his oral French which he did with flying colours and commendation from his teacher.
A teacher from a nearby school wanted to move to France, so asked for help with pronunciation and grammar.
I have also translated a marketing leaflet for a company in Bradford and am the voice at the end of a help line for French speaking residents who wish to move house.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that enjoyment is the motivation for learning. To make sure that a lesson is visually, orally and kinaesthetically appealing to students will ensure maximum attention span and maximise learning and long term memory retention. I have quite an approachable personality and am a good listener, which is important in establishing boundaries (for both learner and teacher) and to iron out any potential problems or misunderstandings that could arise. I have a very flexible approach to tutoring because every student has a unique way of learning and therefore am always open to suggestion to improve my knowledge.

I am a Head of Mathematics working in a Birmingham high school. Therefore I have vast experience of teaching mathematics, particularly at GCSE level, including the new specification. I am an Honours Graduate from Liverpool John Moores University (BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance), and I have completed an extensive Mathematics course at Liverpool Hope University. This provided me with the knowledge and ability to teach up to A-Level Mathematics, including all Core modules but also Mechanics, Statistics and Decision mathematics. I currently teach mathematics to GCSE level in a 'Good' C of E High School in Birmingham where I am Head of Mathematics. I have been providing one-to-one and small group turning on since 2009. These strategies are used to enthuse, stimulate and educate the student in order to make the relevant progression for that individual. There is always a clear line of progression from one lesson to the next as well as an appropriate pace within each lesson. I have always been passionate about teaching, during my university years I started giving extra lessons to schools students and as soon as I graduated I completed a CILTA course to teach Italian to speakers of other languages.

Teaching Experience:

After I graduated in Spanish and English Literature and Linguistics in 2003 I began working at International House in Milan. I gained a wide range of teaching experience ranging from young learners to adults and from large groups of university students to one-to-one lessons with managing directors. When I moved to the UK, I started teaching in schools and companies in London. I have also gained the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

PhD applicant in Philosophy of Religion (Cambridge), recently awarded a distinction for a masters in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics in Education at Heythrop College, University of London. Currently specialising in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics tuition for A level philosophy and religious studies students.

Teaching Experience:

Recently tutored a student for the Edexcel AS exam in Philosophy of Religion. Together we developed a 7 week study plan that addressed gaps in the student's knowledge in line with a realistic strategy for exam preparation. This involved tailoring resources, mainly handouts, to meet the student's needs on various topics. The student typically prepared for a session by reading a set of handouts, we would then talk through the content in session, setting up a written homework assignment on a question likely to come up in the exam, to be reviewed at the start of the next session. Sessions included guidance on how to write top level exam answers, tutoring the student on the assessment criteria for the exam specification and an approach to writing philosophical essays advocated by Dr Michael Lacewing, author of standard A level Philosophy textbooks and my lecturer at Heythrop College, as well as a sponsor of my PhD application.

Other experience
Various bits of teaching through training experiences and agency work, including teaching secondary RE from Year 7s through to Year 12s, and cover supervising, one-to-one tutoring and assistant teaching across all subjects at Key Stage 3. Trained in SAPERE's philosophical enquiry methodology, P4C (Philosophy for Children, Colleges & Communities) and as a voluntary P4C facilitator have run sessions on Ethics topics with A level Philosophy and Religious Studies students at sixth form colleges.

Tutoring Approach:

I am happy to work with students' own approaches but I have found that a good way to structure revision and monitor progress over many weeks is to use an Excel workbook, shared an updated by student and tutor, with a worksheet for each study week. Each worksheet includes boxed and highlighted sections containing guidance notes on the subject covered in that study week and on writing different sorts of exam answers, as well as space for students to complete homework assignments so that they are embedded in with these notes. Over the weeks the workbook is a useful reference point for tuition sessions and can become the main source of revision notes for the student, something that is really appreciated by those who need help to organise their own learning.

My PhD proposal is in the field of analytic philosophy, which endeavours to advance theories and arguments in the clearest and most precise way possible, with words and terms used in everyday language. This is the approach I aim to take to tutoring. I haven't always been taken with philosophy, having a background in media production and wealth management and a first degree in history, so I can also draw on quite a wide set of interests and experiences to give a little colour to my tutoring.
