Personal Description:
I am a forty-two year old male, who has lived and worked all over the world. I only teach English as a Foreign Language, and I will only teach adults (16+). I live in Southampton, and am prepared to travel if required. I am available most of the time, including weekends if necessary.
My interests include football and sailing.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously taught adult students as follows;
1. In Prague (Czech Republic), mostly at beginner and intermediate level.
2. Fijian adults at intermediate and advanced level.
3. Polish adults at all levels.
4. Arabic adults at intermediate level.
I do not teach any other subjects so EFL is my speciality.

Tutoring Approach:

I have used most of the popular workbooks before, but I am happy to teach to a syllabus of the student's choice. I try to make all lessons as contemporary and enjoyable as possible (I have even taught in a pub), but am happy to adapt to the student's needs as necessary.

I am happy to offer significant discounts to the advertised rates for block bookings paid in advance.

Personal Description:
I am passionate teacher and I love what I do.

I am flexible as to methodology, from very formal exam coaching, "by the book" lessons, to more relaxed conversation classes.

I specialise in intensive exam coaching and my students typically achieve A* at A / AS-level!
I am also familiar with the 11+ exams, my daughter had the choice between various offers from both state and independent schools!

I welcome ideas from my students about topics, if desired I can include audio-visual material into the lessons (news programmes, pop song lyrics, soap operas, etc) -you tell me WHAT you'd like to learn, and I'll work out a way for you to learn it. I have a range of authentic materials such as bus/train timetables, venue leaflets, maps, magazines and newspapers that we can incorporate if desired.
We can tailor sessions around your specific area of work/study/interests.

I learnt English formally in school as a child, and learned Spanish while working in Spain for six, and in Chile for one year.
I draw from my own language learning experiences to make lessons interesting and effective.

I am a mother of one "little" girl (who is bilingual in German and English and is currently learning Spanish) and for that reason I prefer scheduling classes between 900am and 330pm.
I can accommodate a small number of weekend/evening classes, and will always make room for anyone with an exam coming up!

Please drop me a line with any questions, I'm happy to answer all enquiries!

Teaching Experience:

8 years teaching English in language schools (Spain, Chile, UK)

11 years of teaching private students (English as a Foreign Language, German, Spanish)

5 years being a host-family for "total immersion" students who study and stay in my home for 14 days at a time.

11+ preparation

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient and friendly but I expect a serious attitude to the work agreed upon.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of the University of Liverpool and of the Open University, and in addition hold a Post Graduate Certificate of Education.

Although English is my principal focus, I have a wide range of interest, including among other things history, fell-walking, football, tennis and Latin.

Publications:
3 sets of GCSE materials
The Medieval Boy Bishops
Richard III: The King in the Car Park
The "Twins" series of children's novels
The "Kit" series of children's novels

I am happy to tutor in your home.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English and English Literature for over 25 years in both state and independent schools to a wide range of pupils, from the very high achieving to the less able.

At A level I have taught English Literature, English Language, and English Language/Literature.

I have been Head of English for 18 years in two schools (one of which has been one of most successful comprehensive schools in the country) for a number of years. My departments have always been the most successful or among the most successful departments.

My teaching career has involved teaching and tutoring pupils and students of all ages and abilities from year 3 to degree level.

Over a period of three years three of my pupils - from over 350,000 candidates in each year - were awarded the highest marks in the AQA GCSE English and Literature examinations, .

My department received an award for the highest performing A level girls nationally.

My GCSE results for have been consistently better than predictions by between a half a grade and a grade.

I have had similar success with A level.

My classes' National Curriculum levels are usually a level or more better than predictions.

I have successfully coached primary age pupils for entry to public schools and selective state schools, including Eton, Oundle, Magdalen College School, King`s Peterborough and Bourne Grammar. I have many years of tutoring experience.

Tutoring Approach:

Since every student is an individual with their own range of skills and knowledge, I tailor my teaching to their needs. Accordingly, I select from a range of traditional and more informal methods to suit the individual.

The following are some of the areas where different students often require help, although the list is by no means exhaustive:

At Key Stages 2 and 3:

spelling, punctuation, grammar
comprehension, including answering written questions
creativity, including writing descriptions, narratives and poetry
writing skills, including sustaining a coherent, interesting style.

At GCSE:

responding to more complex comprehension questions
writing detailed essays developing use of evidence and discussion
understanding and responding to set texts, including essay responses
techniques for oral work.

At A Level:

Understanding and responding to texts
Analysing spoken and written English
Writing polished, detailed, fluent essays

Working in Groups:

Although I usually work with individuals, it can be more cost-effective if you are able to put together two or more students to work side-by-side.

Personal Description:
I love history! I have been 'doing' history since I was 14, and it is something that encapsulates me into a whole different world. I have worked as a history teacher at a secondary school for 10 years, and have loved delving back into the past with the older and younger students alike. I studied and worked in archaeology before becoming a history teacher, and found working with real objects from the past was an amazing experience. More recently, I have reignited my love of English too, especially with regards to theatre and plays. Being close to London enables me to visit the West End as much as I can, and immerse myself in the amazing culture of Language and drama.

At home, I am mum to a 7 year old daughter, and 5 year old son, a cat and a dog. We keep ourselves busy being outdoors as much as possible and are totally hooked on camping! We enjoy the freedom it allows and the back-to-basics feeling. Plus the kids love getting muddy and staying up after dark, so camping allows for total liberation! My daughter has got the theatre bug too, and together we enjoy live performances as much as we can.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching History at KS3, GCSE, AS and A-Level for 13 years. For four of those years I was Head of Department, responsible for issues such as curriculum, exams and monitoring student progress, so I am experienced in identifying areas of need for students and helping them to progress. I have been very successful with exam results, and have enjoyed guiding tutee's through their exam subjects.

I have very good knowledge of many of the exam boards and have been a marker for AQA and Edexcel GCSE History since 2014.
I am also a lead moderator for the A-Level Unit 4 coursework with Edexcel. I have substantial knowledge and understanding of what exam boards are looking for in responses to exam questions and coursework objectives.

I have been teaching GCSE English and Functional Skills in English to a wide range of people - adults and youth groups - since 2013, which has broadened my teaching spectrum, and provided me with new challenges in terms of my teaching. It is something that has been enjoyable and that I intend to continue.

I have been tutoring since Dec 2011, and really enjoy the change from class teaching. I have tutored a wide range of students with a wide range of needs, and have taught to all the exam boards. It is really rewarding to set up individual lessons and focus on exactly what is needed, knowing I can offer help and support to students. I like to be well prepared for individual lessons and to make the most of the time we have to improve techniques, subject knowledge and overall exam grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that what really helps students to progress is an understanding of exam technique. Having knowledge of the subject is important, but knowing how to handle it and use it in an exam situation if key to gaining top grades. I like to adopt a friendly and approachable manner with students to encourage focus and progress. I will go through essays and exam questions to identify areas that could be improved, and suggest ways of improving the use of language to make the most of student's knowledge. Giving feedback for written work is imperative to aid progress and this will take a large role in my tutoring.

I am a 31 year old, London based teacher who has recently returned from living and teaching overseas. I love teaching and have the CELTA qualification, as well as six years experience. I am flexible with hours and will charge half price if you can find a friend to join you!

Teaching Experience:

Six years.

IELTS, CAE, FCE

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer not to lecture students and instead put the focus on them, using what they already know in order to help them develop understanding by themselves. In the EFL world this is known as 'guided discovery'. Experience has shown me that this is a highly effective way of learning.

I like to be as practical as possible when teaching, meaning that I always put language into context and prefer to demonstrate rather than lecture.

I am friendly and patient, but I am also serious about the job and aim to do everything possible to develop my students' ability.

Personal Description:
Let me introduce myself. I'm Anna, I'm Italian, and I'm the teacher you are looking for!

I am passionate about teaching Classical Studies (Latin and Ancient Greek), as well as Italian; I have extensive teaching experience with beginning to advanced students of all ages. I hold a Bachelor and a Master's degree in Classical Studies from the University of Palermo (Italy).

Teaching Experience:

I have 8 years of experience in teaching grammar and literature (Italian, Ancient Greek and Latin), to individual students, and to small groups of students in private and public schools.

I've also worked as a City Lit Latin Tutor: teaching Latin Grammar rules, ligatures, word divisions and accents. Reading correctly any kind of Roman inscription, discerning the subject of the inscription (public, commemorative, religious, etc.). Assessment, marking, report writing and translation from Latin to English.

More specifically, I have experience in teaching students at a wide range of levels including GCSE, A-Level, and University, as well as preparing students for university entrance examinations. Furthermore, I enjoy working with children (6-13 years olds).

Tutoring Approach:

I'm approachable and very patient. I strive to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible and to create a comfortable atmosphere. I think that every student is unique, so I always try to find the best approach for everyone, using intuitive and yet humorous examples as much as possible.
I believe that the best way to teach is to make the subject interesting to the student and to pass on my passion.

Personal Description:
I am a dedicated and a compassionate individual. Currently studying for my law degree. During the weekends I work in retail which enables me to gain outstanding communication skills with people of all ages. For GCSES I achieved outstanding grades for all my 11 subjects. Furthermore at A-level I studied 5 subjects; English Lit, History, Law, Spanish and Sociology. I have access to past papers and useful revision books, my own notes from A-level and other resource materials. I feel education is one of the most important and essential things in life therefore everyone ought to take advantage and increase their knowledge! Due to my age, and having done exams not too long ago myself I feel very confident in helping students overcome exam stress and coursework pressure.

Teaching Experience:

I enjoy teaching, so in 2010 I did voluntary work abroad in a third world country where I taught under privileged youngsters. It was an amazing experience and the satisfaction of knowing you've actually taught them something is beyond describable!
Currently, for my law degree I have to go to primary and high schools in the borough to enlighten students about their basic rights if stop and searched by thr police.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is the perfect job for me because I feel it will not only benefit the students, but it will benefit me too for my aspired career. Majority of students set themselves quite drastic and unrealistic goals, therefore, as a tutor I can actually observe them and set them personal goals which will help them attain their best in exams.

Personal Description:
I am currently taking my PhD in classics at Durham University, having taken my undergraduate degree in classics at Cambridge and my MA at Durham. Also I should mention that I have GCSE and A-level qualifications in Latin and Ancient Greek and am very familiar with the structure and requirements of these exams for any student who may be taking them. My current work focuses heavily on Latin literature, as I am preparing a commentary on Martial's twelfth book of epigrams, although I am equally able to offer assistance to students of classical Greek literature.

Teaching Experience:

During my undergraduate degree I gained experience in private tuition by running a weekly class for two years. The class was based around the works of Homer and catered to a range of abilities. Although the class was primarily geared around making sure the tutees could render an accurate translation of a set passage, assistance was also provided in matters of syntax and style, metrical and literary stylistic considerations, as well as explanations of socio-historical matters.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tuition will of course largely be dependent upon the needs and ability of the respective tutee. For GCSE or A-level students, however, I think it would always be best to begin each lesson with a quick test on a point of grammar and vocabulary (as there is a prescribed list of vocabulary up to AS level), and a literary stylistic feature (e.g. identifying a chiasmus etc.), since these formal aspects essentially underlie the series of unseen exams from GCSE - A-level. After this test, each lesson should focus on a text, ideally alternating each lesson with a text that is prescribed as one of the set texts for the respective exams with an unseen passage. This approach tends to produce the best results since the unseen passages give a true indication of the student's strengths and weaknesses and help the tutor to understand more easily what aspects need to be prioritised.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Pri and I'm a qualified teacher with a degree in Mathematics. I've been rated 'outstanding' in my last teaching reports and was awarded a teacher training scholarship by the IMA. I also write GCSE Maths mark schemes for Create-A-Test (Technology in Education Ltd).

Teaching Experience:

My last placement was at a school in Lewisham where my mentor twice rated me an 'outstanding' teacher (i.e. OfSTED level 1). I taught Key Stages 3 and 4 as well as A-level. Prior to this I taught in Hertfordshire where I also led STEM workshops for Mathematics.

I previously worked as a full-time tutor in Cardiff, where I a large number of pupils between A-level and primary school age.

Tutoring Approach:

For long term tuition, I focus more on conceptual understanding rather than just procedural. In other words, pupils should be able to explain how to solve problems and why they use certain methods, rather than just doing it. This higher-level understanding has shown to be beneficial as pupils are able to apply their knowledge to solve a wider range of problems than they otherwise would.

Initially, we will seek to identify target topics where the tutee would most benefit from additional help. I will then create a tutoring plan which outlines the order in which we will cover key curriculum areas. I set regular homework to consolidate knowledge.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly, compassionate and experienced tutor who delivers the best quality of one-to-one tuition in Maths.
I have recently graduated with a 1st Class Master's degree from the University of Sussex. I also have other interests such as Taekwon-do which I regularly do on a weekly basis.

My enthusiasm motivates students and gives them self-confidence to view me not only as their tutor, but as a role model, a friend and ultimately someone who will take a genuine interest in their learning and achievement.

Parents are very important in the support structure and therefore I include and work with all parties to ensure the best possible system for learning is in place. I create a tailored programme, in which a lesson plan can be followed and progress is monitored, to allow parents to be a part of the tuition process. I do this with care whilst listening and catering to the student's individual needs.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Maths tutor for about 3 years, tutoring many Primary, GCSE and A-Level students in this period.

A few of these have been from word-of-mouth, hence the reason for very little reviews. Each year brings fantastic results and I am yet to have a student dissatisfied with their successes.

I have 100% pass rate and one of my best successes in tutoring was a student that had improved by 3 GCSE grades. Most of my students after a year of tuition have increased by 2 grades.

I hold a full clean enhanced DBS check.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning happens when you are faced a problem and have to struggle to find an answer, so I help students to work out problems by providing them hints and guide them in the right direction by leading them through key concepts. I also break down questions which can be chunky into key bullet points for them to understand quickly and effectively.

My explanations are very clear and also have a calm personality. As well as subject content, I develop a student's skill in exam technique and time management in order for the student to perform well overall particularly in exams.

I can offer 2-hour block sessions at the weekend (if required) and 1-hour block session during the weekdays. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, unless in medical circumstances, and a one-month discontinuation policy either side if tuition is terminated.

Personal Description:
Physics is (in my opinion) a fantastic subject, and one that is highly regarded in society, not to mention indispensable if a career in engineering or some of the sciences is to be pursued.

Before I decided to change career and become a teacher, I worked for a British sports car manufacturer as a design engineer, using many of the principles I now teach in my then, day to day work.

I graduated from Coventry University in 2000 with a BEng (Hons) in Automotive Engineering Design, before going on to read an MBA in Business Management.

After a number of years working in the automotive industry, I got involved in teaching through the Formula Schools initiative.

I graduated from The University of Nottingham in 2010 with a PGCE in Secondary Science (Physics).

This history of working in industry before going becoming a teacher/tutor allows me to bring in relevant examples of where the theory fits in with the real world. I feel that this is important and I find it helps to bring a subject to life for the student,

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a physics teacher in 2010 and have worked as a teacher or tutor since.

I now work full time as a physics tutor, working on a one to one basis with students across a spectrum of abilities at both G.C.S.E. and A level.

Tutoring Approach:

I provide a calm, friendly approach, taking care to find where precisely the student is having problems, then either tweak theories and knowledge in order to correct any misconceptions or start from the beginning with them, taking the time to fully support, explain and develop the student's knowledge and skills in that area, making sure that the foundations are laid to create a strong base for any future knowledge to be built upon. This is important in both G.C.S.E and A level as they are both built upon a spiral curriculum, whereby topics and previous knowledge are revisited and used time and time again throughout the course.

Often, the difference between a puzzled look and the "eureka" moment that all teachers strive for, is just one explanation or a slight tweak on the explanation of a theory away. Sometimes, the difference may be supporting the examples and calculation side, this support then giving the student the confidence in their knowledge and understanding.

In addition to providing subject content tuition, I also provide exam preparation and technique,, past paper practice, revision schedules, constant progress monitoring and ongoing progress evaluation..
