I have been a teacher for over 20 years which culminated in a Head of Dept roll for 5 years (Business Studies). I have been very fortunate in my career to have taught all age groups many different subjects. I have returned to mainstream education, lecturing ICT at Coleg Menai following tutition for Single parents through a charity which has provided me with different skills and approaches rather than classroom led instruction.

Personal Description:
I am a PhD student in the University of Edinburgh Business School within the Management Science department. I work on a branch of applied mathematics called Optimization. Most problems in the areas of finance, transportation, computer networks can be modeled as optimization problems. In my research i will be applying techniques from linear algebra, computer science/ artificial intelligence and statistics to solve these optimization problems. Before starting my PhD i did my masters in Lancaster University, UK in Operational Research and bachelors in National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, India. In my spare time i play sports, swimming, cricket, water polo, badminton, table tennis to name a few. I also play the guitar and am quite proficient in western music theory.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored undergraduate business students on fundamental statistics, fundamentals of operations research and mathematical programming.

I have also tutored masters students in management on the topic of quantitative techniques for business.

Tutoring Approach:

With respect to tutoring i believe that there are 2 major approaches. One which employs a brute force technique to teaching (maximal exposure), the other one that employs a minimal exposure technique to teaching. To elaborate, the maximal exposure technique involves exposing the student to a huge number of problems that leads them to become familiar with that particular setting. The minimal technique exposes the student to a few but hard problems, which if conceptually understood will enable the student to solve many problems of similar complexity. I would personally employ a combination of the two. As far as learning is concerned, i believe it cannot be enforced on a person and each person takes their own time in learning and getting familiar with the concepts. Minimal exposure will lead the student to understand that often, a step by step approach is needed to solve big problems. This leads the pupil to get better at problem structuring, which is crucial. Maximal exposure leads the student to get familiar with the setting, hence the visualization of the problem improves and the student will be equipped to handle many such problems of varying complexity. I would use visual and auditory aid to encourage the students' imagination. Overall, i would take a different approach to every student, but i would try to find out what motivates each individual and help them find the joy in learning that i have.

I'm a 23-year-old graduate of the University of Cambridge, having recently completed my studies and earning a First-Class Honours degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) with a Merit at the Masters course in Mathematics. Teaching Experience:

Have spent two separate periods of two weeks volunteering at a local high school and assisting in Maths lessons. Worked with students of all ages and abilities from Years 7 through to 13, and gave presentations about my work at University.

Tutored one student between November 2012 and April 2013 with positive feedback. A reference is not yet available. I have worked in the past with several students during lessons, and also spent one hour with a student that helped life her GCSE maths grade from B to A. In addition have prepared several fully-worked and explained answers to questions posted online (links available on request).

Tutoring Approach:

I try to ensure that the student is guided through the subject as clearly as possible, with a lot of questions asked of the student when appropriate, that hopefully will allow him/her to think through the topic for themselves. In addition I aim to provide a clear understanding of why the topic being studied is important/ where it allows us to end up, and so on.

I am a 22 year old who is currently working at RWS translations group in Chalfont St Peter. I have recently graduated from Durham University with a 2.1 BA in Modern Languages (French and Italian). Teaching Experience:

My third year at University was spent abroad. I chose to teach in France for 7 months in two primary schools which I very much enjoyed. I loved to chat to the children and try to get them to see the importance of learning English. I also au-paired for three months in Italy during my Year Abroad, which involved private lessons with a 7 year old. I have also previously tutored French, which included exam preparation, focusing on problematic areas and improving confidence. I understand how difficult languages can be, I believe I can sympathise with the student. The lesson must be fun and the student needs to understand the importance of learning a language, in order to be enthusiastic about it.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe languages are crucial in education. Throughout university I took part in Routes into Languages, a consortium of universities working together with schools and colleges, to enthuse and encourage people to study languages. This role involved planning taster classes for small groups, introducing a new language into their education and broadening their knowledge of the world and different cultures. I particularly enjoyed this role as I was enable to communicate the importance of languages and perhaps inspire some of the children to carry languages on past year 9.
