Personal Description:
Three quarters of British adults can't speak another language... Don't be one of them.
Start the new year with a resolution to learn Japanese or Chinese!

I grew up in Japan, and have worked there for 1 year, and 2 years in Taiwan, so I have a good command of Japanese and Mandarin. I have the advantage over native speakers of having mastered them as a foreign language for myself, so I know from experience how to teach it.

I enjoy spending time with people, teaching, and passing on whatever knowledge I have, helping them improve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

2 years teaching teaching Japanese and Chinese to students one-to-one, and in small groups, from 5 years old to adult. I have also taught some lessons for the Japan Foundation in London.
1 year teaching in a Senior High School in Japan
2 years teaching in a Language school in Taiwan.
2 months teaching in Brighton.
2 years teaching one to one English.
Over 10 years as a language learner, so I have been in your shoes, and can share the innovative techniques and memorization methods I've used.

Tutoring Approach:

Student of Chinese said, "Ali tailored the lessons very well and ensured that learning Chinese from scratch was not intimidating. The resources were excellent with varied activities, and there was a lot of out of classroom support. I have enjoyed the lessons immensely and it has inspired me to continue learning Chinese. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ali as a teacher."
I will help you with your reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and have tricks to help you remember the written scripts easily.
With years of experience teaching foreign languages, I tailor your lessons to your needs, learning style, interests, and goals. I use varied resources, activities and role-plays allowing maximum participation, and an enjoyable, and effective learning environment.

Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University in 2008 with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

I am a keen writer of prose, poetry and comedy and whilst at Cambridge wrote and directed the prestigious Footlights Pantomime.

Teaching Experience:

Currently tutoring students in: 11+ preparation (all four subjects); lower secondary SEN homework and mentoring; adult EFL learners; lower secondary English; GCSE English; lower secondary maths; Key Stage 1 and 2 English and maths.

During my gap year I spent some time as a special needs classroom assistant, working closely with a child suffering with Asperger's Syndrome. This involved facilitating the social and academic change between primary and secondary education on a one-to-one basis.

Also at this time I ran Welsh language games sessions for primary children in non-first-language schools to improve and encourage their use of the language outside of the classroom environment.

Whilst at secondary school I taught reading skills to children who had low reading-ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative approaches to the work, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

I am particularly interested in Shakespeare, poetry, drama and Dystopian Literature (especially the works of Margaret Atwood).

In London I can reach any areas by Tube or Bus in zones 1-9. For areas outside London I will drive to you. For areas further away petrol costs may need to be covered. Please contact me for further information.

Previous Students' Comments:

'Alex is a truly outstanding and gifted tutor as well as a fantastic person. I have very much enjoyed being her student for over six months, and have not only learnt a lot due to her expertise and impressive knowledge but also grew to love English Literature because of the inspirational nature of her tutoring. Previously, I used to constantly struggle with my assignments since English is not my first language, however, after a few weeks of sessions with Alex my grades and confidence significantly improved. She has an ability to keep the lessons varied and interesting; always well prepared for lessons - she was kind enough to provide me with extremely useful books and personal notes. Her incredible dedication and hard working nature also deserves mentioning as she was willing to help me even in the evenings when I was panicking about coursework and the approaching exams. With Alex's assistance and firm confidence in my ability I have achieved a high A in my A-level English Literature and even a merit award in Extended English. I would enthusiastically recommend Alex to anyone who wants to succeed in their exams and learn heaps of interesting information.

- Natasza ' (Now studying at Oxford University)

Personal Description:
I am an elite tutor specialising in English and Drama. I also speak Italian to near fluency. I am an honours graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, with a masters degree in English Literature. I am now a full time theatre director, working freelance. I have worked on shows at the National Theatre, the Almeida Theatre and in the West End. My specialties are Shakespeare, American literature and all literature of the last thirty years.

I am extremely energetic, dedicated and sociable. During my time at university I was the Welfare Officer of the college students' union and the college rugby club captain. The ability to juggle my time and commitments has shown me to be organised and focused, while the roles themselves required me to be approachable, friendly and motivational.

Teaching Experience:

I have now been tutoring consistently part time for over five years. Every one of my students has achieved the highest possible grade in the subjects in which I have tutored them.

Testimonies from previous students:

'We could never have done it without Tom'

'Tom was everything we could have asked for in a tutor. Helpful, reliable and seemed to gel immediately with our son'

'Tom was able to sort out many difficult areas in the syllabus.
Through the course of the lessons I gained the confidence and clarity needed for a very important exam.
I highly recommend Tom as he is a patient and kind teacher that I believe can provide help to any student struggling with drama.'

I worked as a volunteer teacher at an international school in Swaziland for three months, running drama classes and English classes. I also coached the school rugby team. In the drama classes I focused very much on basic dramatic skills through games and exercises, while the English classes were much more specific, focusing on Shakespeare texts and working in particular on Graham Swift's 'Waterland', which was a set text for the IB exam that year. I also work with educational projects in theatres and drama schools around London.

Tutoring Approach:

When I tutor I like to be very open and conversational with the student. What is especially important is that the student comes away with the belief not that they have been taught, but that they have discovered everything themselves. I ask a lot of questions, guiding the student towards a conclusion rather than imposing it directly. This makes for a very interactive and exciting experience, an experience that contrasts very nicely with the prescriptive, curricular methods of traditional schoolteaching.

I am very ready to adapt to the needs of each individual student, and to have conversations both with them and with their parents. I recognise that each tutee has specific, unique needs, and I am totally prepared to adjust my style to such needs.

Personal Description:
I'm a friendly down-to-earth Mathematics graduate of Swansea University (Mathematics BSc) and Imperial College, London (Applied Mathematics MSc).

My last CRB check occured December 2012 and I believe they generally thought to be valid for 1 year. In February 2013 I also applied for a Scottish CRB check. Both are available to view.

I am currently undertaking a 6 month internship with Capita Symonds as a Graduate Hydraulic Modeller. This means I work Monday - Friday so tutoring sessions are available on Saturdays, however if a student is worried near an exam, I can sometimes squeeze an extra session in during the week or on Sundays.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored various ages and skills, from Primary education all the way through to A-level. I have had one year work experience in one of the top school's in the country, working as an assistant Mathematics teacher. This included general classroom assistance, teaching and mentoring small groups, as well as whole class teaching. I completed the Student Associate Scheme at a Bromley school, through Plymouth University. I can offer support to students currently attending school or full GCSE/A level teaching.

I am pleased to say my students all progress well, and often come top of their cohort, with a recent student coming top of his year in his GCSE exam. A lot of my students comment on my explaining skills and find it easier to understand my teaching methods than those taught at school. They like my flexibility as I work with them, and am happy to alter my methods if they already are comfortable with theirs, so that I can strengthen their understanding. I welcome questions and see improvements within weeks of teaching, particularly less confident students, as they find me easy to approach and are comfortable asking questions.

I am also currently an RYA Dinghy instructor, and DSA Approved driving instructor, showing I very much enjoy passing my knowledge on!

GROUP REVISION SESSIONS PLANNED
Due to a large number of requests, I will be offering morning and afternoon group revision sessions on particular subjects, which will work out more cost effective for parents. These are open to old and new students, and in each session there will be a maximum of 6 students allowed, although 4 is my optimum. If one class is over subscribed, I will arrange a new date. They will run from 30th May-10th June (dates approximate).

I work with the student to discover what their best way of working is. Some people like to do practice questions, in which case I have a number of text books which I can get these from. I have a very open mind when it comes to learning styles, and have recently completed an essay on this subject. I do however, provide direction when necessary, in order to fulfill the students capabilities.

Personal Description:
I am a PhD student, undertaking my doctorate in Environmental Sciences, with a focus on soil nutrient cycling and nutrient transport to surface and ground waters. I completed my BSc in Physical Geography at the University of Exeter and gained first class honours in this.

Teaching Experience:

I carried out teacher training at a basic level with the University of Exeter in order to participate in the Students Associates Scheme. After this training I spent three weeks in a local secondary school where I actively participated in Geography and Religious Studies lessons, and was able to provide work plans for higher and lower achieving students. I also worked closely with students that had special educational needs.
I also have experience in teaching sports to groups of young children.

Tutoring Approach:

During my time at the secondary school I found that I produced good results working one-to-one with students, particularly with students that were struggling to understand concepts or were having difficulty with the teaching style being used in the classroom. I am patient, focussed and willing to work hard to enable a tutee to achieve their goals.

Personal Description:
My name is Ryan and I am currently in my fourth year of undergraduate medical training at Barts Medical School. I have also just completed an educational degree based around medicine. I am very passionate about teaching and I hope this translates into my lessons.

My general area of interest is in the sciences, in particular biology. I have A-grades in biology, chemistry, and maths at A-level and A* in all sciences at GCSE level.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught extensively throughout this year in a variety of formats including one-to-one sessions, lecturing, and class teaching. I have spent this year studying the science and psychology behind teaching and learning and I can therefore back-up my teaching techniques with extensive evidence. I have helped struggling students on the course to improve and achieve their aims.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to take an interactive approach to tutoring with the student engaged at all times - This method aims to reduce 'spoon-feeding' information as much as possible and ensures active understanding of the taught material. This also has the benefit of being more fun for the student and is a much more powerful method of learning.

Creating an atmosphere where the student feels comfortable to ask questions and converse is very important to me .

Personal Description:
Hola! Bonjour!

My name is Jennifer and I moved to the UK 5 years ago. I am originally Spanish and speak the language fluently, but because I was born and did my education in Geneva (French speaking part of Switzerland), French is also a mother tongue to me.

I would like to use my knowledge and spare time to help others discover and learn new languages. I am dynamic and have a bubbly personality and when it comes to work I am attentive, meticulous and organized. I always commit to do my best in every situation because my education taught me that achievement was synonymous with intense and hard work.

I currently have availability most weekdays during daytime and early evening (except Tuesdays). To enquire about lessons, please send me a message with your preferred days/times and I will get in touch with you to discuss options in further details. Thank you!

Teaching Experience:

I started tutoring in the UK since July 2013. I currently help with both Spanish and French no matter the needs and goals.

When I was in Switzerland, I had a year of teaching/tutoring experience in the following areas:

-After graduating from High School, I registered with the Department of Public Education in Geneva in order to be a substitute teacher in primary schools. I have then been called many times to cover when teachers were absent, for periods of two days a week most of the time.

-At the same time, I joined the Association of the Ajeta Tutorings to help pupils at home with their school difficulties and homework. During my time there, I had three pupils on a regular basis that I helped with French, Maths and English.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very friendly and bubbly person and will always do my best to make the person feel at ease. I like to assess the level of the student first before proceeding to an adequate approach and discussing desired goals. I am looking for people that are enthusiastic about learning and committed to working hard.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in July, and since then I have been looking for interesting ways to spend my time whilst also raising some money for further study. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills. Last year I also co-wrote a novel which has just been published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I love to read, write fiction, and I also work as a sub-editor at an online short story magazine. My main address is in EN4, but I am also happy to tutor in Oxford.

Teaching Experience:

In October this year I successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I also had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Also between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.
