Teaching Experience:

I have over 15 years experience living and working overseas in various countries, teaching and coaching in the English language. Over the last year I have worked as an English Teacher at a private language school in Brighton, taught ESOL and German at an Adult Education College in Uckfield as well as teach students privately in my home or theirs IELTS Preparation, ESOL, Working English, A-Level German, GCSE German, Beginners German and Travel German.

I might be expensive but I am worth it as your child will see a marked improvement in their results and confidence levels. To assess whether I am the right tutor for you I offer the first lesson for free.

I also offer short intensive Maths courses for entrance to American Universities on some weekends. Each course is 2 days long and is specifically tailored for UK students. It is specifically designed to bridge the gap in knowledge, format and techniques between the GCSE Maths exam and the SAT exam. I was awarded a First Class Honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director of an innovation company.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience ranges from teaching GCSE students all the way up to teaching PhD students to improve their thesis writing skills. One of my students improved from a D to an A at GCSE level after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one grade. Apart from the usual syllabuses I am experienced at teaching students the Maths section of the SATs and ACTs in order to get scholarships to American Universities.

Tutoring Approach:

My tuition method involves making Maths and Physics fun so that children and young adults will remember their lessons and overcome the "I can't do science" syndrome. So that you can assess whether or not I am the right tutor for your child I offer the first lesson for free.

I have a broad knowledge of texts, and am well qualified to meet the curricular needs of any pupil. I have marked Standard Grade folio and Higher Critical essay for the SQA for many years, and Higher Folio for the last 6 years, so am well versed in expected pupil standards.
I would also like to say, at this point, that the reason I prefer pupils to come to my home is because I do not drive and I have lots of materials at home.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English at all levels, from 1st-6th years, for 24 years.
I have also been tutoring for 12/13 years and in last years (2014) exams I saw all my tutees pass Higher despite some of them only coming to me after having failed their Prelim. All were ecstatic with their result and phoned to inform,and thank,me. This years results have been astounding as of my 8 tutees, 7 got A passes and one got a B. All came for the majority of the year and none were certainties for an A. Indeed 3 were struggling but worked extremely hard and got well deserved A's.

As well as new pupils for Higher last session ( 14/15) I also had several returning pupils,or siblings, from last year as my services as a tutor have been retained to now take them through the transition from Standard N5 to Higher. This has been a trend for me as tutees have always been happy with the lessons and my efforts in making them feel comfortable.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a well experienced tutor on a 1 to 1 and group basis. I have tutored at all Secondary levels and will support, and supplement, the teaching materials already provided by the pupils' schools. I will look over, and grade, work done by pupils in school and that set by me. In general, I will identify a pupils weakest areas and we will work hard on improving on that whilst "fine tuning" other areas.
As of the Academic year 2014/15 National 5 and N6 Higher students were catered for and I, myself, taught it to my 4th and 5th year students. This will be a very challenging year for S4 as a lot has to be done in a shorter time as year 4, generally have 1 or 2 less teaching periods than year 5/6 yet they have the same work to cover. In addition they have more exams and work experience to cope with. An early start at this would be advised in order to get into folio as soon as possible.

I lived and worked in France from 1982 to 1985. I have always spent the summer holidays from the age of 12 living with a French family and feel equally at home in France or England. From school age I knew I wanted to travel and find new places learning the language as I went. I love to communicate and enjoy meeting people and getting to know them and want to pass on the enthusiasm I feel for all things French. I enjoy reading, music, films and French food isn't bad either.

Teaching Experience:

My initial teaching experience was with 'Le Club Francais' where I was in charge of a weekly after school club of 5 - 11 year olds. This was great fun as learning was channelled through games.
My friend's son had extra lessons after school to pass his oral French which he did with flying colours and commendation from his teacher.
A teacher from a nearby school wanted to move to France, so asked for help with pronunciation and grammar.
I have also translated a marketing leaflet for a company in Bradford and am the voice at the end of a help line for French speaking residents who wish to move house.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that enjoyment is the motivation for learning. To make sure that a lesson is visually, orally and kinaesthetically appealing to students will ensure maximum attention span and maximise learning and long term memory retention. I have worked in both primary and secondary schools as a teaching assistant. This was primarily in art in the secondary school, teaching children how to draw and use various materials to create great artwork. In primary school, I have helped teach literacy, numeracy, phonics, reading, science and art. During these experiences I have found ways of explaining new information to children so they can apply it without supervision. From my Master's degree in at RADA, I gained practical theatre training at one of the most prestigious drama schools in the world.

Before that, I attained academic excellence with a First-class BA degree from the University of Bristol, a top UK university. This gave me a rigorous appreciation for writing and researching. I was able to thrive academically.

Whether you or your child need help with an audition, an essay or an exam, I am happy to assist you. I am passionate about teaching and would love to help you build confidence and achieve success at whatever you put your mind to.

Teaching Experience:

With over 1000 hours of tutoring experience, I have worked with those of all nationalities aged 2-65 and helped students to lift their grades by up to 4 levels. To give you an idea, I am currently tutoring English to A-level students, Film Studies to a History of Arts student who needs help with an open unit and three Russian Primary-school children. I am also preparing an actor for auditions and teaching grammar skills to an adult-learner.

Personal Description:
Having gained plenty of experience both through my own studies and tutoring other students I am able to help tutees look at their subject matter from a different perspective. Given my previous studies and my Masters that I have just recently finished studying for I can relate to students study problems easily and help them with areas they are struggling to tackle. This includes from a study perspective but also the challenges of balancing life with study. Having an outsider take a look at their problems can often help.

I have obtained a 2:1 LLB Law Degree, completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice Course and a Masters in Real Estate. My previous jobs have included residential conveyancing and contract law / management within a recruitment company. Currently I work in the Property Department at DP World regularly dealing with commercial and property legal issues.

I hope that my own passion and determination for studying, learning and self-development is passed on to the tutees to help them with their own studies and future careers.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience in personal tutoring has covered a range of legal modules contained within A-Levels and Degrees. These have included Equity & Trust, Land Law, Contract Law, Family Law and European Law. This has been a combination of one-to-one teaching through the duration of a course or helping students with their assignments by reviewing their questions and giving them my initial thoughts on the subject matter and providing guidance on how to approach the issue at hand or proof reading their drafts and providing comments.

A number of students have also asked for assistance in re-sits of their exams. This can either lead to complete reviews of a module or looking at key aspects which a student has struggled with. In all cases it is important to identify what the issues have been which have led to the re-sit.

Whether a student requires assistance from a distance through online tutoring or a one-to-one approach, I will give 100% to help them achieve their full capability.

Tutoring Approach:

At no point do I write the assignment for students or simply provide them with the answers. This will not assist the student in progressing on their course or make me feel that tutoring is worthwhile. Through my own experiences I find that relating the principles / subject matter to real life situations works best. Depending on the student it may also be a case of repetition on a certain subject matter which they are unable to obtain from their existing teaching format. The most important part is finding what works best for the student and then progressing from there.

Some students prefer to interface in person, others through emails, phone calls, Skype or a combination of these formats. Should a student be close enough in location then one-to-one tutoring is available.

Let me introduce myself. My name is John. I graduated from Sheffield University in the 1970s where I studied French and German. It was while teaching in a lycee in South West France as part of my course that I really developed a love of language and foreign travel. I subsequently went on to Liverpool University where I obtained a postgraduate teaching qualification. My teaching career extended over a number of years in a variety of schools in the public and private sector, including a spell as head of languages. In 2002 I studied to teach English as a foreign language. I was surprised to discover that teaching my native language in all its complexities gave me a valuable insight into teaching other languages, not just my own.

Teaching Experience:

As previously mentioned the majority of my teaching lay in mainstream education, where exam preparation was of great importance. In addition, I have enjoyed teaching adults at evening and day classes. I currently teach English as a foreign language to home-stay visitors, but my main efforts are concentrated on private tuition to school children or adults.

Tutoring Approach:

Language learning can be easy, as long as it is varied and well structured. My basic method involves firstly presenting to the student the required vocabulary and grammatical structures, and then familiarizing him or her with them; this can be achieved through verbal drills, short exercises, word games etc. Once they are reasonably well acquired, they are put into a more practical context, imitating as far as possible real life situations e.g. 'asking directions in the street'.For this I use role play, sometimes involving what is called 'information gap', where the student must find out some practical piece of information solely by using the foreign language involved. Many students come to me because, simply put, they have lost the plot! Either they have experienced poor teaching or, for whatever reason, they have become de-motivated. In this case I would spend additional time practising verb formations etc - it is often grammatical structures which have fallen by the wayside.
My overall approach is friendly, but with high expectations. New tutees receive the first lesson free of charge, so that an assessment can be made as to the teaching required.

I can easily put myself in the skin of my students and try to turn complicated things into simple terms. I have a BA in Italian Studies and Modern Languages, I majored in both French and Italian. I have also spent time living and working in both France and Italy. I am TEFL certified and have experience tutoring English to Italian children and conversation lessons with adults.

Teaching Experience:

During my time at university I spent one year in Florence, Italy is an English language assistant in an Italian secondary school and tutored italian children privately. I also provided conversation lessons to Italian adults in English.

Personal Description:
I grew up in south-west London, in Twickenham, before attending Tiffin School (Kingston-Upon-Thames) and Cambridge University, where I was awarded my BA (Hons) degree in History of Art. I have always engaged with extracurricular activities with enthusiasm, something which my educational institutions have given me ample opportunity to do.

My main passion has been acting. It has provided many opportunities to meet and get to know a huge range of different people, all in a challenging, intense environment. Fundamentally, it is the opportunity to engage with the perspective of another person and to attempt to embody this in actions and speech. It requires a performer to listen to and work with others on stage, and to work within a flexible, productive relationship - this is essential for any student-teacher relationship, as a dialogue begins to emerge.

My other interests have similarly complemented my academic pursuits: I have played rugby union for 14 years, up to and including university level, and used to play the french horn in the school orchestra. Both activities gave me an opportunity to voice my individual contribution to the group whilst working within a team, invaluable experience for academic discussion as well as confidence in many other areas of life. They offer different approaches to problem solving and develop some of the broader skills essential for academic success, such as self-expression, articulation, flexibility and confidence.

Teaching Experience:

My experience includes working with primary school students (age 4-6), through a voluntary program at secondary school. This involved helping children to learn to read. The weekly session required empathy and flexibility on my part, demanding an understanding that each child`s ability was completely unique, and that my approach needed to be modified to fit each person. In particular, I had to cultivate patience and a desire to listen and to understand everything the child was saying.

Whilst at university I also participated in a student run mentoring scheme, which gave unprivileged children the opportunity to understand life and work at Cambridge. It was a fascinating opportunity to understand some of the social and personal blocks to academic confidence, as well as offering ways in which these problems might be developed and overcome. Most importantly, it was a joyful experience to be able to help a younger person, and to understand that they were a unique person with their own approach to problems and solutions. By listening to him, I gradually learnt the ways in which they best communicated and how I could use those situations to our advantage as a student-teacher pair.

More recently, I have participated in a student-run university theatre tour which also comprised educational workshops. These workshops were a much bigger part of the tour than we had originally thought, and proved to be challenging at times. This was partly from the language barrier (many classes spoke little to no English, and were often too embarrassed to speak at all), but also from the unpredictable nature of the students. We had to work on our feet, employing what resources we had in a way which was meaningful, cumulative and ultimately led to an end. Our exercises required an overall structure and an ultimate purpose, but we also wanted to adjust this according to their reactions. Though I initially found this challenging, towards the end of the tour I could take charge of workshops and lead them with ease.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching and intellectual discussion have always been an important part of my family life, and it is an activity which I enjoy on a personal as well as professional level. My time at university has developed my ability to think in this way, as well as providing an environment in which I was surrounded by these kinds of discussion, with both professors and students. The emphasis on close-contact supervision periods at Cambridge taught me the importance of helping each student understand their individual form of expression.

I would avoid didactic repetition and seek to challenge the student and invite them to contribute. As well as work done outside the tutoring time period, I would encourage tasks such as presentations and prepared discussions as much as possible. I believe this work lays an essential base for passionate intellectual discussion, and it is something which certainly helped me in my university interview.

Coupled with this development of interest in particular subject areas, I would try to help the student's method of arguing and offer sustained, constructive advice on how that might be more effective. A university candidate is only as successful as their ability to communicate effectively and succinctly, something which may require exercises as different as confidence building or syntax and grammar. But as well as this self-belief and self expression, the student would need to acknowledge that academic (and educational) progress can be achieved by listening to others and attempting to understand their point of view. This dialogic aspect is essential to my tutoring approach.
