Personal Description:
Hello, my name is Solenne. I am a French native speaker and I have been living in the UK since 2013.
Holder of a Master's degree (universities of Paris La Sorbonne and René Descartes), my education also includes the DAEFLE of the Alliance Française de Paris (Teaching French as a Foreign Language Advanced Diploma) awarded with honors in 2014.
I offer tailor-made French courses as a reliable, qualified and patient tutor to students of different ages, levels and nationalities.

Whether you are:
- a parent and you would like your child to receive extra help with his/her French school work,
- a student taking GCSE or A-levels in French and need confidence for your exam,
- a professional willing to have a proper conversation with your French colleagues or clients,
- or just an adult learner with a passion for languages and wishing to brush up your French,
I will pay close attention to what you are looking for and how I will help you to achieve your language goals.

I have an updated French Police Check and DBS Check.

Cancellation Policy:
There are times when advance notification is not possible and I am willing to adapt myself as much as possible to students who face circumstances beyond their control.
However, I require a minimum cancellation period prior to a lesson.
- If I am not notified (by phone or by email) of a cancellation 48 hours prior to the session, I will fully charge the amount of the session.
- In case my student(s) and I can find another convenient time slot within the week, the lesson will be postponed and will not be charged.
If you contact me prior to this window, thank you for your courtesy!

Teaching Experience:

This is my third year as a French as a Second/Foreign Language (FLE) Tutor. I feel equally comfortable with beginners, intermediate or advanced learners. I am also a French language Instructor and Assessor for the british Ministry of Defence (MoD) and a Tutor for the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is not just guiding students through their learning but also giving them confidence and enabling them to experience lessons in a relaxed, friendly and yet result-oriented way.
That is why I tailor my lessons to the students` needs and pace (one-to-one or small group tutoring on request), in order to teach French language effectively as well as to raise awareness to the French culture.
My approach is action-oriented, based on the ability of students to communicate (speak / listen / read / write) in authentic situations, according to the Common European Framework of references for Languages (CEFR).

Personal Description:
Hi there,

My name is Jean-Charles. I am a 29-year-old French male. I have been living, studying and working in the UK for more than two years. I worked as a chef two years ago, as a French assistant last year and as a trainee-teacher this year when studying the PGCE French with Spanish. I am now a qualified teacher and I work in a comprehensive school near Reading.
Before coming to the UK, I studied philosophy and French language and literature at the Université de Strasbourg. I have a very good knowledge of French literature and grammar and it has been very helpful to my past tutees.

I am easy-going and I adapt myself easily. One of my favourite hobbies is speaking foreign languages and discovering new cultures.

Teaching Experience:

In Reading:
I have been teaching French in a comprehensive school to pupils aged from 11 to 18.

In Liverpool:
I have been tutoring a mature student to improve her speaking from January 2012.
As part of my PGCE, I taught French from Y7 to Y13 and Spanish up to Y9 from October 2011 to 2012.

In Grimsby:
As a French assistant, from November 2010 to May 2011, I helped primary and secondary students with their French on a one-to-one basis, in small groups and I also taught lessons to whole classes.

In Bolton:
I taught French language -grammar and literature- to a mature-student retired from teaching from October 2009 to March 2010. (testimonial available)

In Strasbourg:
I gave lessons in French to a 16-year-old girl in Strasbourg in the summer 2010.
I also helped two primary school pupils with their homework from 2007 to 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

As I strongly believe that languages and cultures come together, I always strive to work on authentic material and I also give my tutees many opportunities to learn in out of tution context in order to develop their cultural knowledge.

However, for me the most important in teaching is to meet the needs of learners. Therefore, my priority is first of all to assess the needs of my tutees. Tutees may want to develop only some of the 4 skills: speaking, listening, reading, or writing, depending on the use they want to make of French. They also may have particular topics they want to work on, functions of their needs, projects or tastes.

This student-led approach must be carried on throughout the lessons. The role of the tutor is to maximise opportunities for the learner to discover things by themselves because this is the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn.

Last but not least, languages are interesting and fun at the same time. They develop thinking skills as well as they provide entertainment. My tutoring reflects this philosophy. This is why I always try to alternate entertainment and thinking time during the lessons.

Personal Description:
I have a degree in Physics from the University of Nottingham and have taught Science in schools for over 8 years. I have a wide variety of teaching experience, from teaching English as a foreign language to a small group of 6 year olds, to teaching A level Physics in college. I love teaching and especially enjoy seeing students progress, become more confident and gain a real interest and love of the subject.

Teaching Experience:

I have now been tutoring for over 3 years, helping many students to gain the grades they require in their GCSE and A level exams for Science and Maths.

Previously, I spent 7 years living in Thailand where I taught both England (as a foreign language) and Science in an International Program at one of the top government schools. I also taught English, Maths and Science as a tutor, both on a one-to-one basis and to small groups.

I gained a PGCE in Secondary Science from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2009 and worked as a supply teacher in a number of secondary schools in the Cheshire area before becoming a full time tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to encourage a love of the subject and take great joy in seeing students progress and become successful. I try to be friendly and supportive whilst also striving for excellent results. I try to make sessions interesting and informative by personalising the work to centre around the interests and needs of the individual student and by making use of ICT resources.

Personal Description:
My name is Chris. With a good academic background, and now with excellent feedback, my approach is to not only impart knowledge, but also attempt to generate a passion for a subject that will remain long after any examination success. Educated at King's Collage School, Wimbledon and a subsequent degree course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at King's College, London, I joined the BBC as a television recording engineer in 1976. I became a successful editor with the BBC and continue to enjoy the same role now on a freelance basis.
I am a good communicator, and seem to have the knack of explaining sometimes difficult concepts with clear and concise explanations. I have kept in touch with my core subjects (maths, physics and science) throughout my life and retain a keen interest in all of them. I'm not just a book-based dry academic but someone who knows how to fire enthusiasm for learning that will last long after any examination paper. My work has never been Mon-Fri 9-5, so I am available during the working day both in term time and school holidays.

Teaching Experience:

I have now been tutoring Maths for over two years which has generated good feedback and positive results from parents and students alike.
I think that is all that counts.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to impart my enthusiasm for the subject to my students. This is so much easier on a one to one basis compared with the classroom. A tutor will often cause the 'penny to drop', not by simply repeating a classroom lesson, but by offering a different explanation of a problem. Working in close contact with the syllabus, I quickly identify areas of weakness in the understanding of a subject, and repair that damage as quickly as possible. This is essential, especially in maths, as new concepts can rely so heavily on previous knowledge, which, if absent, will make comprehension of new material even more difficult. This is presumably why you are looking for a tutor in the first place. Homework, mock exam questions are essential, not only as feedback for me to know how successful any lesson has been, but also for you as a parent to see if any improvement has been achieved. A return for your investment if you like. Get in touch.

Personal Description:

My classes are for

- Adults, Business and Travel
- Children of Russian heritage or working towards a qualification

My lessons for children are based around
- developing your child's speech, reading and writing,
- improving his comprehension
- building her Russian vocabulary to the "educated" standard,
- learning about Russian culture and history
- working on language intereferance and language code switching.
In my teaching children I use proven methods and stragegies developed in American and German schools specifically for biligual children, as well as materials created by a very talented Olga Soboleva.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching adults and children both at prep school and privately.

Tutoring Approach:

As Stephen Krashen puts it, "Simply being a native speaker of a language does not in of itself qualify one as a teacher of that language. Conscious and extensive knowledge of grammar does not make one a language teacher either. Rather, the defining characteristic of a good teacher is someone who can make input comprehensible to a non-native speaker, regardless of his or her level of competence in the target language."

Your primary goal as a student is to learn a language. In that regard my primary job as a tutor is to guarantee the effectiveness of your learning process in relation to your needs and expectations.

How do I achieve that? First and most importantly by combining the right set of tools in my teaching repertoire:

- TPRS - Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling - is at the core of my methodology.

Traditionally there has been a prejudiced view that only certain people can 'do' languages. That only smart students can become proficient and that only the really smart can move on to advanced study. TPRS has demonstrated that the vast majority of students can achieve high levels of success at all levels of foreign language study, and that acquiring a second language isn't nearly as difficult as we teachers sometimes make it. TPRS is making particular headway in language classrooms across the US and considerable research has been done and published on its efficacy.

TPRS works because it is brain-friendly and multi-sensory methodology, fitting the needs of various learning styles. Students develop a real "ear for the language," learning to listen and respond to what sounds right.

- Teaching grammar in meaningful context from day one
The focus is first and foremost on the message, with realistic expectations (level-appropriate) for grammatical accuracy. My philosophy is that of John DeMado: "Linguistic accuracy is a destination, not a point of departure." My way of teaching grammar is based on usefulness, frequency of use and level appropriateness.

- Tremendous amount of Comprehensible Input.

This approach supports the language acquisition theory by Stephen Krashen, who says: "We acquire language in only one way, when we understand messages, that is when we obtain comprehensible input."

- Reading as a major component of learning process.

In his book, The Power of Reading: Insights into the Research, 2nd edition, (p. 37) Stephen Krashen states, "Studies showing that reading enhances literacy development lead to what should be an uncontroversial conclusion: Reading is good for you. The research, however, supports a stronger conclusion: Reading is the only way we become good readers, develop good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammatical competence, and the only way we become good spellers."

- Teaching Russian to heritage speakers as a language arts/social science.

What students say:

"As a language teacher myself, I was very particular about the kind of Russian lessons I wanted: communicative, engaging, learning through interaction. I didn't want to get bogged down in grammar but instead to focus on useful vocabulary and phrases I could actually use in Moscow during my regular visits. Julia's lessons have fitted this brief perfectly. Even in our first lesson, I was using Russian to interact in a very simple way, which gave me a huge confidence boost. Julia got to know me well in the initial lesson and then tailored all our classes to my interests and daily activities, making the lessons really relevant and interesting. I initially explained to Julia that I could only do 20 minutes homework a day while commuting into work. She therefore provided vocabulary flashcards I could use on the train to maximise this time. The whole service is bespoke! Julia is a patient, encouraging and engaging teacher "
I would highly recommend her lessons." Sarah, Surbiton

"I took about 5 months of private lessons with Julia, in preparation for a long motorcycle trip around Northern and Central Asia. Although I had been learning a bit of Russian a few years back, I had forgotten everything. In 5 months I went from not speaking any Russian to be able to speak simple sentences, ask questions, explain situations, and feel confident that I can find my way round in any situation that may arise through the trip. Julia impressed me by her enthusiasm, by how much research, effort and preparation she put in, to design the lessons to fit my specific needs, for this journey. I definitely would recommend her to my friends and anyone who wants to learn Russian fast and efficiently." Maria, New Malden

Personal Description:
My Profile:

Graduated from Leeds University in Genetics and have a deep passion for science. After leaving University, I have worked in the Computing and IT industry to Project Manager level, mainly for large blue chip financial companies such as General Accident (now Aviva), Standard Life, Bank of Scotland, GE Corporate and others. In 2004 I decided to return to my original love of science and gained a PGCE teaching qualification to teach science.

It is my aim to transfer my passion and love for science to my students as well as an understanding of the subject in order to enable them to AIM HIGHER and ace their exams.

Building on my science qualification, I gained a PGCE teaching qualification from Huddersfield University to become a qualified teacher of science in 2005. Following the successful completion of the PGCE, I rapidly achieved the position of Programme Manager and gained extensive experience of teaching Biology, Chemistry, Physics, BTEC Applied Sciences (Medical Science, Forensic Science, Health and Social Care), Access to Nursing, Access for Medical Professionals and Foundation Degree (Biology). The teaching experience has been in schools, Sixth Form Colleges and Further Education Colleges in Warrington, Leeds and Manchester.

Teaching Experience:

I have been providing select 1 to 1 private tuition in all areas including English, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Media Studies and Physics.

I am able to tutor from primary, secondary (including entrance exams) through GCSE, A Levels, BTEC (Level 2 and Level 3) and Adult Foundation Degree level.

Tutoring Approach:

The tutor is the expert in subject knowledge and learning but it is the tutee who has the paramount role in their own education and excelling in their subjects. I firmly believe that the role of a tutor is that of a catalyst and the child's role in their own learning is of greater importance. I aim to guide the tutee to learn in a structured manner that so that the child does not waste their time jumping from topic to topic, randomly browsing a bit here and a bit there, as often happens. To do that, as tutor, I will facilitate their learning on a 1 to 1 basis so that they may gain a deeper and greater depth of knowledge of the subject. I will provide the subject knowledge expertise and transfer my knowledge to the tutee in a manner and at a level that is appropriate to the tutee but pushing them beyond their limits to the next stage. To achieve that grade "A*" a GCSE tutee should be able to understand basic AS Level material. For an A Level tutee to achieve the highest grades at A Level they should be able to cope with University first year material with ease. It is my aim to enable my tutees to achieve these goals.

I will work to improve the child's self esteem, self belief and confidence in their ability to do well. As a trained hypnotherapist I am particularly qualified to boost a child's self-esteem. Once the tutee is confident in their subject knowledge, then we will work on exam techniques and exam practice in order to enable the tutee to ace the exams and significantly improve their grades.

I will work with each tutee on an individual basis and adjust the tuition lessons to their needs. There is no standard one size fits all model with me. Homework will be set to enable the subject matter to be reinforced with some self-learning at home. Exam practice will be key to enable the tutee to become proficient in their exams and achieve the highest grades. Exam technique contributes significantly towards exam success. We will always work to enable the tutee to AIM HIGHER.

I am also able to guide sixth formers with their UCAS applications and personal statements.

At all times parents will be involved with the learning of their child so that they may guide and support their child's education and monitor progress. Parental involvement is also a major factor in the child's success.

For the science lessons my aim is to include as much practical work as is possible, where this is feasible in a tuition setting, keeping safety of the child of paramount importance.

If your child is quiet and shy or is in a mediocre class or is just coasting along or is struggling to achieve the grades required to get into the University course of their choice, whether it is Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Engineering, Computing, Optometry or other science course, then tuition with myself will enable them to boost their grades and give them the advantage that they need. Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. A good tutor will help guide tutees who want to learn to get ahead and avoid becoming disinterested or bored. Why leave it to chance?

It is never too early to start boosting a child's education. For primary school children it is important that they get a good start to their education and do not lag behind. A tuition boost will enable them to get into a better school or a higher stream set so that they do not have to struggle or get left behind when the come to do their GCSE and A Levels.

I also have experience of vocational courses such as the BTEC and Applied Science courses and I am able to provide the additional guidance and support required to ensure that your child achieves Distinctions rather than passes in their assignments. It is not my policy to do the tutee's coursework for them but to help, guide and support their research and provide constructive feedback.

Tutees will be required to complete all assessments and homework on time in advance of the relevant lesson.

Personal Description:
I am currently a third year Undergraduate student at the University of Birmingham studying Medicine. As an ex student at Queen Elizabeth's School for Boys I have an enthusiasm for learning which stems from my deep desire to achieve success. I have a fondness for teaching and have so for long periods of time. As well as teaching I enjoy to play football and I also thoroughly enjoy travelling.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught numerous students at QE boys and have aided them throughout with GCSE English and GCSE/A-Level Sciences also. This has involved me coordinating lesson plans and detailed presentations for classes of up to 12 pupils. Having been through the stress of exams, I have also held numerous study groups and sessions in order to aid pupils further. I have also taught Year 7 and Year 9 pupils on a one-to-one basis in a range of subjects including Biology, English and Chemistry. I have also tutored IGCSE Chemistry students on a one-to-one basis.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that the best way to tutor is to understand the pupil and their best methods of learning, rather than enforcing my ways upon them. After having been through the entire secondary school process myself I feel that it is important to engage with students and interact with them, providing them with new and refreshing ways to analyse, comprehend and apply the knowledge with which they are taught.

It is important that a student is able to relate to their tutor and feels at ease to ask questions to quash any qualms they may have and I feel the best way to do that is to provide an environment which is comfortable and encouraging. With extensive knowledge of a variety of exam boards, I will seek to dissect the relevant specifications for the subjects and relay them in a way which I feel the student will best understand.

Tutoring and learning is not meant to be a daunting process and the best teachers in my experience are those who you are able to talk to openly whilst making you think in order to get the best out of you.

Personal Description:
I am a Spanish woman from Barcelona who studied Hispanic Studies. I have been living in Bristol for 1 year and 8 months. I finished my degree in 2014, I completed my last year at the University of Bristol with a Erasmus Scolarship. The scolarship gave me the opportunity to come to the UK and improve my English.

Teaching Experience:

I do not have too much experience as a teacher due to I have obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Hispanic Studies in 2014. But I used to teach Spanish in Spain to some children who needed to get better grades in this subject and I currently teach Spanish in a Secondary School to a group of English students who are going to take the A level Exam in May.

Tutoring Approach:

I am interested in focusing my lessons on the Speaking skills. I think that comunication is the most important part for those students who are learning a foreign language and want to speak with people using this language. At the same time, I got my Honors in Grammar and Linguistics, and I like teaching Grammar because, obviously, the students need to learn a basic knowledge of how the new language works to be able to speak properly. If my students are children I show them the Grammar part playing games to make them enjoy and learn at the same time.

Personal Description:
I hold a full-scholarship academic PhD in English Drama and an MFA with Distinction in Shakespeare from the University of Exeter, as well as a first Class BA in Theatre from the University of British Columbia. I have published scholarly articles. Additionally, I have received relevant certifications in Teaching English as a Second Language and in radio presenting (and a slightly less relevant one in stage combat!).

I am a professional actor with experience in all media including the West End, and am a founding member of Hotspur Theatre Company. Additionally, I have professional experience as a playwright, theatre director, and teacher.

Teaching Experience:

From nursery school students to 16-18-year-olds, and undergraduates at the Universities of Exeter, Bath Spa, and Cumbria to postgraduates at the LAMDA drama school, I have taught students at almost every level. I have also coached adult professionals.

My key tutoring subjects are English, Drama, Shakespeare, English as a Foreign Language, Elocution, Voice and Speech, Public Speaking, Acting, and Research and Academic Writing. I look forward to helping you to achieve your best results!

Tutoring Approach:

All students are different, and therefore I vary my approach student-to-student. That said, my core approach includes my experience in drama, and I will often use play scripts as texts to analyse, or for language-building exercises and conversational scenarios. I have a substantial research and essay-writing background as well, so can offer useful insights into students' written work.

Personal Description:
I´d really describe myself as a responsable person and friendly. I have always liked to teach and when I was studying the university I taught painting and drawing to children in my free time.
I lived with my parents and with my two sisters and i miss them a lot, but I came to england looking for better opportunities for me and I love learn new things every day and a good way for it is teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching Spanish for several years. I have always liked teaching children and adults. I work as a nanny sometimes and the parents ask me to speak in Spanish to their children to learn a new language.

In my experience teaching Spanish I have realized that if you feel like learning a new language you can achieve it.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to teach Spanish in a dynamic way is to say that the student asks everything he does not know and I can answer everything, especially when I teach children to whom I must dedicate more attention so that they are more interested in learning the language.

I have different ways to teach and it depend if I am teaching a kids or adults.
