I have no formal teaching qualifications. However, I am an EAL teaching assistant at a Secondary school in Milton Keynes and have gained some valuable teaching experience from working with students at the school supporting (in Science lessons) them both in class and one to one.

I also work as an invigilator for an American company that conducts computer based assessments. I have been CRB checked for my role, as the bulk of the tests at the centre are driving theory tests, therefore mostly 17 year old candidates. I have been working at the centre for 5 years.

Tutoring Approach:
Having had a tutor myself whilst I was doing my GCSE's I do know how much difference a few hours a week of one-to-one help makes to the understanding of a subject and to the final result.

Whilst helping my daughter when she is trying to understand a maths problem I do not jump straight in with the answer but encourage her to break the task down into simple steps.

Tutoring Approach:
I think that each individual tutee requires a different approach but these individually tutored needs can still be set effectively around a core syllabus. With regards to coaching for entrance examinations, as well as exams such as SATS and GCSE's, I believe that the more at ease you are with the examination situation, the easier it is to achieve your best in the final examination. Therefore, i think that it is important to use past papers in order for the tutee to become familiar with the type of questions which will appear, as well as identifying any consistent mistakes.

Personal Description:
I am fifty years old, married with two children aged 20 and 18, both of whom are attending university.
It was my original intention to become a teacher of Mathematics but, having completed my training, I decided that I would like to experience the world outside academia before returning to the profession. I have since spent thirty years in industry, currently heading the Quality Assurance and Technical Department at the company where I am employed.
Outside work I enjoy an wide range of pastimes and activities such as coaching an under-elevens soccer team, playing football myself, walking, gardening and raising funds for the local church and for national charities.
Until now, there has beeen insufficient time in my schedule for me to consider tuition on anything more than an occasional basis. Since the children are now both independent in many ways, however, I feel that the time is now perfect for me to make the move towards a career in the subject that I studied for my degree. In particular, having had experience with my own children and those of friends and relatives, I know that I can offer a useful service.

Teaching Experience:
Although I attained the PGCE in 1980 and enjoyed my teaching experience at Clough Hall Comprehensive School in Kidsgrove I did not enter the teaching profession, preferring instead to work in local industry where I have remained since. I hold fully qualified teacher status (QTS); my teacher reference number is 7971375.
Our chidren have both studied Mathematics to A level, one following the Maths and Statistics route and the other Maths and Mechanics; I have - through helping them along the way - kept up to speed with the requirements of the curriculum at each step of their education.
In addition I have, on an unpaid basis, provided tuition to the children of friends and relations.

Tutoring Approach:
In the latter case above I have used a flexible approach in which I develop a programme of topics to mirror what is being taught in class but with the option to amend this, even with little or no notice, to spend more time on problem areas.
I believe in reinforcing the underlying principles through multiple examples, initially worked through as shared problems before asking the student to provide solutions - with assistance if necessary - and, finally, setting questions to be completed outside the tuition period. I am prepared to offer free advice over the internet or phone in the intervening period, if required.
