Personal Description:
I have been tutoring academic subjects for the last 6 years, whilst coaching/mentoring from the age of 18.

I have a long-standing interest in helping young people beyond just the curriculum and passing exams. I have a Masters in Positive Psychology from UEL, the 1st in Europe to offer the course and 2nd in the world. This new science focuses on building strengths, whilst promoting good well-being and helping to prevent mental ill health.

I have been lucky to have received some very kind references from tutees/parents I have worked with previously; you can take a look at these at the bottom of my profile if you wish.

Teaching Experience:

My core tutoring experience is focused around the individual Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), English and Mathematics, for both secondary school (up to GCSE-level) and primary school.

Beyond this, previous experience has also extended to:

- GCSE German
- Primary school - English
- Entrance examinations - for primary and second schools (including verbal & non-verbal reasoning)
- UCAS application forms, personal statements, job applications, CV writing, etcetera

(I also provided Tennis coaching at Summer camps, through Tennis England, from 2005 - 2007; this included both 1-to-1 and group lessons for children aged 4-15).

I will always be completely honest as to my capabilities/limitations, and will be advise accordingly in certain instances where I do not think I am best placed to help.

Tutoring Approach:

Every student has a different personality, and will have specific ways of learning suited to them. Recognising this, my approach is personalised, friendly and supportive, with the focus on getting the best for the individual student.

My approach is take on the combined role of a tutor and mentor, relating their academic goals to their own day-to-day lives as a whole, and future aspirations of the students that I work with - my four years working in the recruitment field also helps here.

As previously mentioned, I have a deep interest in mental health and wellbeing of students; simply put, the happiest students perform at their best. I feel that there is much value to be added here.

Furthermore, effectively "bridging the gap" as a key point of contact between the student & their respective parents/guardians is crucial; I liaise regularly with parents and guardians of my students, keeping them up-to-date with the tutoring sessions, and how best to encourage positive development of their child.

Personal Description:
I am currently a freelance writer and researcher working from home on a variety of subjects, including English Literature, Theatre/Film/Media Studies, Sociology, Psychology, as well as other Humanities. I am flexible about when I can tutor, to work round the schedule of others.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored GCSE, A-level, Degree and Doctorate-level students on a range of subjects, although my main focus has been English Literature and Psychology, and, increasingly, Sociology. At Cambridge I spent a few weeks working in a primary school, as I did when I was younger, and I used to teach primary school children at home as my mum was a childminder. I have run drama clubs and workshops, and worked with a host of young people, including those with learning difficulties. I have written model essays for exam boards, proofread and edited work to be published, and worked on many dissertations and PhDs with University students.

My students generally gain their desired grades at A-Level, if they apply themselves and take my advice on tips and tricks to help with revision - little and often is the key, as well as putting random words or theorists where you can see them everyday - like your mirror! - so they can become familiar and memorable.

Tutoring Approach:

I have access to previous papers and model exam answers, and ensure that I am clued up on exam specifications and changes. For English, I will of course always read the set texts that my tutees are studying prior to the first session. I like to mind-map various themes and ideas with the student, and think outside the box as it were, and always make sure that the ideas stem from the student's own work and thinking - so that they can remember it more fully and develop it in future (often students have more knowledge, ideas and insight than they realise, it just needs coaxing out of them!). I often tutor on coursework as well as examination preparation.

For Psychology and Sociology, a more systematic approach is required; I generally like to go over the material thoroughly, testing the student throughout, and spend time on previous exam papers and questions, planning essay answers, discussing how theories relate to real-life situations, and generally helping the student grasp what is required of them in the exam.

I have recently returned from two terms teaching Physics to A level at the British School Tennerife. This was a maternity cover and included setting up the practical exam for the students.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught science in secondary comprehensive state schools for over 20 years. Ages range from 11 to 18 mixed ability, teaching physics to A level. I am an assistant examiner working for Cambridge International and marking A level physics papers. Also moderating Physics A level coursework for Edexcel.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutored for friends in the past. I am currently a serving teacher who marks exam papers and is therefore aware of the requirements demanded in exams. I teach the latest syllabus for the various key stages. I am very tolerant and patient with my students.

I supported a young student who was studying for BA Business Accounting at the university by tutoring her in the Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Financial Analysis and Corporate Finance subjects. As a result, she achieved a 2:1 Grade. It is pertinent to note that the young student did not have any prior knowledge in Accounting. She took A Level Drama, but changed to do Accounting at the university, which makes her achievement much more remarkable.

Tutoring Approach:

In my current role as an Accounts Lecturer, I have adopted a methodical approach to my teaching. The preparation and use of scheme of work, session planning, syllabuses, timetable, lesson notes and handouts helps me in presenting my lessons in an organised and logical manner, and ensuring that the syllabuses are substantially covered. I am confident and positive in my teaching and able to build confidence in the students themselves, which helps in achieving the learning objectives set for each lesson and thereby achieving the overall objectives of the course. I adopt a mixture of pedagogical and andragogical approach to my teaching. I thoroughly explain first to the students, demonstrate a couple of examples, then get the students to demonstrate their understanding, by getting them to do some work themselves.

My approach to tutoring is to help the student understand the subject, and not only understand the subject but also how the subject is applied in real life, and indeed to their own lives. I have found this really helps the student to be able to grasp the subject.

We all want exam results, but I like the students to understand what we are doing as this way they get skills that will stay with them long after the exams are over.

Tutoring Approach:

One to one tuition or group tuition for primary aged children, one to one tuition for G.C.S.E., one to one tuition for A-level and university level. I also offer tuition for adult learners covering a wide range of subjects from business German to casual traveler , from first basics of German language to supporting more advanced learners achieving their accreditation. Lessons are tailored to individual needs after a first meeting and adjusted accordingly to the process of the learner. Depending on individual needs lessons consist of German grammar, spelling, vocabulary, conversation, listening and translation. As a native German I am able to offer a very broad range of subjects.
In primary group tuition I work with visuals and spoken word, listening, singing, reading, play and role play. According to the children's age it is based on learning through play unless otherwise requested. Please inquire for group rates.

Tutoring Approach:

Students and parents both want academic success - high grades and the pride that comes with achievement. I believe any student, regardless of ability, can become a high achiever. I know from years of experience that students under perform because they have not learned the right approach or pathway to success.

Any school has the same essential components: attendance, class participation, attentiveness, homework and testing. Most teachers give students points for each category; however, simply showing up on a regular basis and "doing" homework will not guarantee a good grade. The difference between average performance (a "C" student) and high performance (an "A" student) turns on what a student does outside of class.

While no two students learn exactly alike in exactly the same manner, all students must struggle with independent learning. Where do I do my homework? When do I do my homework? How do I do my homework? Am I well organized? If not, how can I become better organized? Do I know how to study for quizzes and tests? If not, how can I develop better study skills? Students who discover the answers to these questions become high achievers.

Having studied through all levels of school I can appreciate how useful having a source of targeted teaching is, this is the service I hope to provide. Having participated in youth organisations and group bursary projects I have had the opportunity to work with people from many different backgrounds and cultures, this allows me to tailor to individuals. I am a STEMNET ambassador for which I volunteer in various schools and teach pupils how to apply classroom knowledge to real world scenarios. I play hockey in my spare time as well as recreationally painting to focus my time on activities outside of work.

Teaching Experience:

I am a STEMNET ambassador. For this role I work with young students in interactive workshops to engage them in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
I was enrolled in a mentoring scheme in university, for which I was assigned multiple students. I provided guidance with work and general university issues.
During my time at secondary school and sixth form, I worked in sessions with younger students during which time we would cover material which they were struggling with.
Participated in a youth organisation, BSS Shaka, for which in my role as a senior member would organise and run weekly workshops which focused upon cultural learning as well as sporting activities.

Tutoring Approach:

Methods for teaching are subject to the individual therefore I strive to find a method which worst best for both parties. Aside from teaching the core syllabus I also would like to know what you struggle with such that more emphasis can be put upon that. I prefer to set up a dialog with my students such that the teaching is more interactive. I will prepare a lesson plan, and set students questions to work on between sessions; anything which they are unsure of can be covered in the next session.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that secondary school students should be independent, critical thinkers, being able to easily relate historical context to the English Literature curriculum. I would provide information and set small homework tasks that will give the student both historical contexts and a further understanding of the source discussed, enabling them to make a further connection with the author. This is one of the criteria's that examiners look for in GCSE English papers, so I hope to improve this skill.

I also hope to make the subject of English and Drama enjoyable, conducting assessments and learning through games. For subjects such as Shakespeare, I endeavour to use clips of performances and DVD's to help with the analysis of the language. I will also set small creative homework tasks, that make learning fun and creative.

My main approach for KS2 students would be to make English fun and creative, conducting games and exercises that will both entertain and educate.

In my current main job, I teach and train members of staff and provide workforce development for over 1000 staff members on a variety of topics. My second job is as a Kickboxing and Self Defence Instructor at the University of Sunderland, where I have worked for over 7 years.

My peers and tutors have told me that my mannerisms and personality lend itself well to instructing and teaching. I am patient, understanding and explain subjects in an accessible way. Susannah completed her MMus course in 2016 at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, studying with Anna Pope and Lynda Coffin.

Whilst at Trinity, Susannah has played in the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra side-by-side schemes, where she has been able to perform alongside professional flautists from Philharmonia Orchestra and Welsh National Opera. She has also participated in masterclasses with Emily Beynon, Wissam Boustany and Paul Edmund-Davies.
Susannah has a keen interest in chamber music and plays in the London- based flute quartet Incanto Flutes.
