Personal Description:
I am a medical student in my first clinical year of study at the Royal Free & University College Medical School. I completed my first degree last year, achieving a first-class degree in Medical Sciences with Physiology at the prestigious UCL Physiology department. I was also awarded their Leonard Bayliss memorial prize for the highest overall mark in the year. In training to become a doctor I am exposed on a daily basis to many different scenarios, and have had to develop the communication skills, critical thinking and leadership necessary to analyse problems and work towards their solution logically as part of a team.

I enjoy many extracurricular activities including representing my medical school in Rugby, Cricket and Squash, and have spent time in the University of London Air Squadron as an officer cadet.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no formal qualification in teaching, I have found plenty of opportunities to tutor others whilst both at sixth form and throughout my time at university. My first experience of tutoring was as a cricket coach at a local cricketing centre.

Subsequently I have had experience in tutoring students through their GCSEs and A-levels, helping one student to reverse a GCSE grade for Maths from a C to an A. In doing so they were able to achieve their desired place at sixth form college - an experience I found very rewarding.

I have also found time whilst at university to sign up for the UCL 'Peer Assisted Learning Scheme', helping students in the years below me to achieve success in their preclinical exams. I was very fortunate to be part of the first year of students helping to teach anatomy in the university dissection room alongside several notable UCL Professors and Surgeons, an experience I enjoyed tremendously.

Tutoring Approach:

I often found it frustrating at school that some teachers would teach only what was required to be learnt on the curriculum, with no room for deeper information that invariably helped to consolidate the point being made and often captured the imagination. This often meant that many students tried to simply remember everything rather than understand it.

Whilst studying my A-levels I was inspired by one teacher who saw things differently - often going beyond the depth of knowledge required in order for the students to achieve a true understanding. This has invariably been my approach to both my own learning and tutoring style ever since. In my experience students gain far more from working through a problem logically, by breaking it down into its constituent parts and having a sound understanding of first principles. Not only does this save the student from an alternative method involving a lot of 'cramming', it also equips them with the confidence and ability to answer more difficult questions that they may not have anticipated with a rational and sensible approach.

Personal Description:
I recently graduated from Oxford University with a first class degree in French and Philosophy. I am currently studying for a Masters at UCL. I am keen to share my enthusiasm for my subject. I would also be very willing to help students prepare for Oxbridge Interviews in French, Philosophy or indeed any Humanities subject. An experienced teacher and mentor, I am well placed to help both those students who feel they need extra help and those who wish to develop their academic potential beyond the confines of the school curriculum.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as a foreign language to children of all ages (4-18) in China. I have also tutored students one on one in France. I also have experience as a mentor for a student experiencing difficulties at school, again in France.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to develop the students' passion for the subject, using material geared to their interests and abilities. I believe good grammar and vocabulary are important, but that it is first essential to bring a language alive. I like to do considerable work on speaking fluency and building confidence. However, I will of course tailor lessons to the needs of the individual student, and am well aware, for instance, of the rigors of the grammatical tests students face in Oxford entrance exams. With regard to interview preparation, I believe it is most important to work on targeted extra curricular reading and confidence in an interview setting.

Personal Description:
Hello. My name is Kathryn. I have just graduated in Biology from Bristol University with First Class Honours. At school, I chose both Sciences and Arts at A Level, taking Biology, Chemistry, History and English Literature AS Level (All As). I would therefore be able to assist a tutee in a broad range of subjects. I am a friendly and outgoing person, and would want to ensure that the tutoring sessions were both productive and enjoyable for the tutee.

I believe that the most important traits in a tutor are clarity and patience; these are the qualities that my tutor had, when she was assisting me in my GCSE French. I would always seek to ensure that my tutee is happy with our progress.

Teaching Experience:

I have just completed a teaching assistant placement at the Winterbourne International Academy in Bristol. This placement was part of a government iniative to try to widen participation in education and to raise the aspirations of young people. Some of the young people I was working with were from deprived backgrounds in which none of the family had ever been to University before. The hope was that having teaching assistants in the school might expose them to ideas that they had not come across before. It was thought that students might be able to relate to us, as University students and young people, more readily than they could to their teachers.

I was based in the science department and my role was to support teachers in lessons and aid students with their understanding of topics. In this, I produced work sheets for lessons, assisted in science practicals and talked to individual students about any difficulties they were having. What is often a major problem in schools, is that the classes are too large in size, meaning that the teacher is unable to give enough time to each individual student. As a teaching assistant, I was able to help to rectify this, through one-to-one contact with students. In this respect, the roles of teaching assistant and tutor are quite similar.

Tutoring Approach:

The role of a tutor is to help their tutee to understand a topic, through providing intensive one-to-one assistance that a teacher is unable to give. This of course, does not mean telling someone the answer, but it means presenting the information in such a way that they are able to find the answer themselves. This can be done through going through examples of a problem together, to ensure that the right approach is being taken, followed by allowing the tutee to try the problem alone. Tutoring is about prioritising, and highlighting the areas that the tutee is finding particulary difficult, and then going through them. It may be necesary to go back to the basics and build up from there, to ensure the subject is comprehensively understood.

Personal Description:
Having received a B.Ed in Primary Education in Canada, I first came to the UK to pursue further graduate studies in Cambridge University. I've always really enjoyed teaching, in all levels and forms, and have always tried to be involved in it in one way or another. I am currently working for an architecture company in the public sector, but am still looking for ways in which I can be closer to the teaching environment. Being that English is a second language for me as well, I can understand the difficulties and hardships that exist when learning to communicate with others, and can completely empathise. Whether it be for recreation or a specific purpose, I'd love to be involved in tutoring one on one, or in groups, to help learners through the process.

Teaching Experience:

Since obtaining a Bachelor of Education at McGill Unviersity, I've tried to involve myself within either tutoring or teaching atmospheres ever since. I've taught in both primary and secondary schools in Montreal, Quebec, and have started after school programmes for students. I have taught weekend art and drawing classes to primary school students in a local Chinese school in New Jersey, USA, and have also organised an art exhibition to showcase their work. In addition, I've been hired by private families to tutor their children in both English and Mandarin on a one on one basis. I have a TESL qualification and have also previously volunteered teaching vulnerable women at the Womens YMCA in Montreal. Most recently, in December, I have traveled to Beijing as part of the Cambridge University's Education Without Borders Committee to teach English in a high school in Beijing for two weeks.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very student based. Both in and out of the classroom scenario, I strongly believe that students have the right to dictate and negociate their learning. This allows them to take ownership of their own learning strategies, and thus, monitor their own progress. My belief is that teachers should try to provide whatever resources and methods that aid the student in this process. Teachers can only steer the direction of learning, not choose it. I also believe that students and teachers should work together to establish their learning agenda, and cooperate to make the experience both meaningful and enjoyable.

Bradley (Mr)

View Bradley's profileBradley private tuition profile or  Quick View

Personal Description:
I am a second year undergraduate studying physics at Imperial College London. Having taken GCSE and A Level examinations within the last five years I feel that I know precisely what is required of a student taking these exams. Being only 20, I feel that I can offer a different approach from older tutors, some students can feel more comfortable with someone of a similar age. If you have tried an older more experienced tutor and this has not worked then maybe I am the option for you.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching experience having gone straight from school to university. However, I have been helping a 13 year old preparing to take his common entrance exam in order to get into Westminster School. I have mainly been a help with maths but he has found me useful in preparing for his science exams too. He preferred me helping him to his at the time paid tutor who was a retired teacher as he felt I was a bit more understanding as to what a child of his age needed to know.

Tutoring Approach:

For the teaching of maths I feel that there is no substitute for practice. I supply lots of relevant problems after having taught/revised a particular topic. I feel that a person learns maths best when they attempt questions and are able to ask for advice or to be shown several examples before attempting these on their own.
For the sciences my approach is different as this is more fact based. I take a particular section of the subject before going through all that needs to be known for the relevant examination. After, I ask a selection of questions in order to ascertain the level of understanding. If it needs improving I shall approach the topic from a different angle to see if this helps in the understanding of it. If the understanding is good I would then move on to more exam based written questions.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher and CRB holder. Born and educated in Spain, BA (HONS) in English Studies, I have a qualification as a MFL teacher and the QTS. I came to the UK two and a half years ago and started working as a primary teacher.
I can offer Spanish lessons to any level as I am a native speaker of Spanish and my specialty in my teaching training course was Modern Foreign Language teaching. I can also offer tutoring at Primary level (any subject/s) as it is what I have been working with since 2007.

Teaching Experience:

I started working as a MFL English teacher in a secondary school in Spain. Then I moved to France to join the Language Assistants program in which I had the opportunity to teach Spanish as a second language.
After that I got a job as an English teacher at a language school in which I gained experience teaching from English from primary level to adults.
I then decided to move to the UK and try working as a teacher within the English educational system and I started working with primary, that is, teaching every subject not just MFLs.
I am therefore ready to either tutor primary students who need support in their students' lives or students/adults who need support with their Spanish regardless their level.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been a tutor before and in my opinion is one of the most rewarding ways of teaching as it is one-to-one. I tend to listen to the pupil's needs and adapt to them instead of having a preconceived idea of what I should be doing.
I believe testing at the beginning is essential to determine what areas should be reinforced. But also doing so after some time has passed to see if there is any improvement and what should be kept or changed.
In any case I think tutoring is more about helping and encouraging than just teaching in itself so whatever the requirements of the student are should be taken as a priority when being a tutor.

Personal Description:
I am currently working in the public sector and undertaking a professional qualification, MA Housing, on a part-time basis. I graduated from the London School of Economics in 2008 where I read BSc History and International Relations.

I am extremely proactive and have undertaken a number of extracurricular activities and have a wealth of work experience in the social sciences. For example, I graduated from the Windsor Fellowship Leadership Programme where I was sponsored and employed by the Department for International Development (DFID). I have also worked for The National Archives where I undertook historical research and advised on public records and family history.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently tutoring a number of students up to GCSE standard in English literature and history and have experience of tutoring first year undergraduates with writing social science essays. I also trained as a mentor with the National Aims Higher Scheme at LSE and worked with GCSE and A-level pupils.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very passionate about making English literature and history accessible to young people and strongly believe in allowing students to develop a curiosity for the subject.

I believe one of the most effective ways to support students develop an appreciation of English literature and history is through sharing ideas, particularly through discussing their personal interpretations of what they read and debating it. My method is not to give answers but to ask students open-ended questions.

Alongside academic study I encourage students to develop practical skills, such as being able to debate and deliver presentations confidently.

The days of sat in front of a textbook, copying question after question are gone. I aim to engage my students with interactive tutoring sessions using a mixture of modern computer resources, simple demonstrations and questioning techniques.

I aim to give my students a fascination in science which leaves them asking more questions and wanting to understand more, while at the same time, testing exactly what my students need to know in order to succeed in their exams.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified English teacher at secondary and further education levels (PGCE) with a degree in English Language and Literature from University College London. I am highly experienced and enjoy the intensity of 1-1 teaching or small group teaching, where progress is rapid and rewards are almost instant.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy making rapid progress with the student in tutorial classes, specialising in study skills and exam technique as well as looking in detail at the actual subject - English Language or English Literature. The student often needs work on increasing their confidence, which in turn allows them to engage with the subject more successfully and enjoyably. I am a newly qualified teacher of Geography, with a passion for teaching. I completed my education at an all girls Independent school, and went on to read Geography at the University of Leeds where I gained a 2:1 Hons. I am a keen horse rider, with 4 horses whom I compete regularly. I am the youngest one can be to qualify as a teacher, and feel that this is one of the reasons for the great relationships that I form with pupils. I believe that teaching should be fun, and that hard work is rewarded with fantastic grades.

Teaching Experience:

PGCE Geography at Goldsmiths College.
Geography teacher at Bexleyheath School, Plumstead Manor and Riddlesdown Collegiate.
Currently teaching as a Primary School Teacher- Years 2, 3 and 6 at a local village Primary where my lessons have been referred to as impeccable.
Currently tutoring a range of pupils: Geography A-level, GCSE Maths and French, KS3 Maths, and all primary KS2.

Tutoring Approach:

Tuition should be fun and rewarding. I do not believe in copying out text, or doing hours of needless revision. You decide what you need to practice, and more importantly, how you want to learn it. I am currently tutoring maths and english, which has involved playing brain training on the Nintendo and reading the daily newspaper. If you feel that you learn better by reading, doing, watching or listening- you make the choice. Ultimately I want you to achieve and succeed.
