Personal Description:
As a school student, I was a confirmed hater of Science! I am still haunted by the drafty labs and memories of sitting in silence on wobbly stools taking notes from ancient text books and carrying out odd practicals with the ubiquitous Potato tuber. It wasn't until I started studying Science as an adult learner in an FE college, where I was taught by inspiring and enthusiastic lecturers, who illustrated important concepts with analogies, diagrams and genuinely interesting practicals, that I began to realise that science was relevant to me and was "my thing".

This experience has stayed with me and has given me a passion for making science exciting and largely the reason that I chose a career in personal tutoring.

I am a professional full-time private tutor. I have recently graduated with an MSc in Science (Medicinal Chemistry and science education studies). I have also graduated with a First class honours degree in Life Sciences (Open) and I have completed a Post-graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education, specialising in Science Education.

Teaching Experience:

I specialised in A level and GCSE tuition and I have extensive experience working with a wide range of students, from those who are struggling and need help understanding the key concepts to those who do well in science but need support to develop the exam technique that will get them the top grades.

Tutoring Approach:

When I begin tutoring a new student, I spend some time getting to know the individual and we begin by discussing their current feelings about Science and what they would like to get out of the tutorial sessions. I also carry out an assessment of the individual's learning style (sounds scary, but it's not, it's just a short quiz). By discovering how the individual learns best, I can structure the tutorials so that they are composed of activities that will be both effective and enjoyable. In all cases, I endeavor to make Science enjoyable and relevant to the individual student as possible and tailor the explanations to their particular interests.

As well as providing subject-specific tuition, I place particular emphasis on the development of study and exam skills. Where relevant, this includes teaching essay writing skills, how to revise, how to approach exams and specific scientific skills, such as data analysis and evaluation, which are often assessed in course work. I also offer tutorial sessions which focus just on study skills, for those who are comfortable with their subject knowledge but need extra support in these areas.

As well as traditional face to face sessions, I also offer fully online lessons using skype and an interactive whiteboard which allows me to interact with students in the same way as in a face-to-face lesson. I am an Economics graduate from Liverpool University and taught economics and business studies in secondary schools for over 10 years. Prior to teaching I worked in advertising for 10 years. I now focus on tutoring economics and business studies students and I also own two online businesses. I live in Bristol, am married with 3 children and I am passionate about helping young people achieve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

I taught Economics and Business Studies in state schools for 10 years and have also tutored students for many years. My students consistently over-perform - all students I tutored in 2015 achieved at least a grade B and improved at least one grade since I started working with them. Several improved by 3 or more grades. For example, one recent A2 Economics student went from a grade E in his January mock exam to an A* overall in June, whilst another A2 student went from a grade B to a grade A overall and achieved 100% on an AS resit paper. I am an experienced Economics examiner and am familiar with all the major exam boards. I can supply references on request (some are listed on my profile) and I have a current CRB.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always begin by discussing my tutee's individual requirements and areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. Once these have been established, I usually start with a return to basics, teaching economic or business theory that may not have been fully understood by the student. Once they are comfortable with the concepts, I will look to build in higher order analytical and evaluation skills as well as providing real world examples. I will use a variety of teaching methods to stretch students, backed up with exam technique by practising past papers. I am happy to teach face to face for local students, however I often teach online via Skype, using a whiteboard facility, which my students can also access. This makes the sessions as interactive as meeting face to face and it also means I can tutor students who don't live in Bristol. I always encourage students to provide feedback so that they receive maximum benefit from their teaching.

After missing the most part of an entire term of Economics teaching at my school essentially all of my Economics knowledge came from Ian for my A2 exams. I had originally achieved a C-grade in AS Economics, but after Ian teaching me for only two school terms I was able to achieve two A's at 174/200 UMS in my A2 exams (the criteria for earning an A* at A-level being 180/200 UMS). "Matt only got an E grade in his February A2 mock exam and the school predicted he would get a C grade at A2. With the significant assistance from Ian, Matt achieved an A* at A2. In his other two A levels, Matt achieved Bs (he also had tutors for these). There are several reasons why Ian made the difference: 1.Being taught on Skype. Matt was initially very apprehensive about being taught on Skype rather than in person. But Skype proved really beneficial. Firstly it enabled Matt to fit in tuition at times that would just not have been possible if travel had been involved. Secondly it enabled Matt to have additional lessons when he had spare time. 2. Focussing on how to structure essay answers. The school just didn't put anywhere near enough emphasis on this crucial area. 3. Essay marking. A key aspect of A2 is exam practice. I have been tutoring in the South Wales area since 1992 after graduating in Chemical Engineering with 2nd (Hons) Degree from University of Glamorgan. After graduating in Summer 1992 with an Honours Degree in Chemical & Process Engineering from the University of Glamorgan, I set up my tutoring business to assist parents & pupils with examination preparation, who felt they were being let down by the educational system.

I feel that having a good foundation to any subject is the way to go thus this would usually where I begin. If a student has a good understanding of the basics in any subject, more complicated details will seem much easier; like building blocks. Hello, my name is Tamara. I have just completed a degree in Medical Microbiology and Virology, studying at the University of Warwick. In September 2015 I moved down to Brighton where I have since undertaken training to become a Midwife! I absolutely adore Midwifery - finding the balance between academics and interpersonal relationships. With a long history of science behind me (including a year spent working full time in IVF) I would love to continue my tutoring.

During my time at Warwick I successfully tutored three girls, one at GCSE level, and two at A level who both achieved the grades they needed to continue on to University. I am immensely proud of them both.

I have always have a great passion for Biology and Chemistry, and took them both along with Geography up to A2 level. I have experience working as a mentor in my secondary school whilst in Sixth Form, to support the younger years. In addition to this I have run summer camps yearly for ages 4-16 and have worked and been responsible for groups of children and teenagers of all ages.

I am a patient person and take the time to clearly explain things. I find that diagrams particularly help with understanding complex topics, as well as representing basic concepts that can be kept by the students as a solid grounding to a subject, and then elaborated on further in the future. With any new student I am keen for them to tell me particularly what they would like some assistance with and how best they feel they learn, so that over the first few sessions we can build a suitable style of teaching/learning to help the student in the way they feel comfortable with.

- Academic Year 2013 - 2014 I helped a student who scored a C grade at AS Economics achieve an A grade at A2 Economics with an impressive 97% in Unit 1, 99% in Unit 2 and 100% in Unit 3. He had also had three previous tutors who he was dissatisfied with before coming to me.

- Academic Year 2015 - 2016 I help a student who had achieved a B in AS Economics go on to achieve an A* in A2 Economics with a 95% average across the unit 3 and 4 exams.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach embodies a long term approach to learning I teach students in a way which will allow them to be successful in higher education as well as their more short term exams. I also try to make students more confident in their abilities overall not just the material I teach.

I strongly believe that a solid understanding of basic principles is the foundation to success in academic study. I concentrate a lot of time and energy on instilling these basic principles in students.

I am also a strong believer in understanding over 'rope learning' I ensure that pupils understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, never encouraging them to simply regurgitate what they have seen previously.

I also encourage practical understanding of concepts frequently referencing real world examples and using objects to illustrate theory as I recognise that theory on its own given no relevance is harder to remember. Supplementary to this I also relate teaching material to potential job roles and tasks which I have knowledge of (mostly Banking or Business related) in order communicate usefulness to students and keep things interesting.

Finally I believe teaching successfully is ultimately about listening to your students I constantly encourage students to question things and express anything they don't understand or are not too sure of. If a student looks unsure or hesitant about something I will ask open questions or get them to explain concepts to me in order to fully grasp their understanding. This also helps build their confidence and ability to express themselves accurately.

I care deeply about teaching and learning in general and the teaching of mathematics is a particular passion for me. I am a secondary school mathematics teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I have completed a BSc in Accounting, an ACCA qualification and a PGCE course. I am currently studying for my MSc Education degree. I have 20+ years experience as a tutor and 10+ years as a teacher. I have also worked for an acounting firm for 5 years and worked as a company director for 7 years.

My first session is provided free of charge and I use this session to understand the needs of prospective pupils. At the end of the session, I have a frank and honest discussion with the pupil and/or their guardians. I use these conversations to listen to the concerns of the pupils and/or their guardians and present an outline of my assessment of the student's areas of strengths and weaknesses. I also suggest a course of action to help the pupil move forward.

Teaching Experience:

I have been providing tuition in mathematics for over 20 years and have been a secondary school Mathematics Teacher for over 10 years. I have tutored A Level, university, AAT, CAT, ACCA, CIMA and CIPFA students in accounting for over 10 years and have 5 years experience teaching professioanl accounting courses in private colleges. I have experience teaching to individual students, to small groups and to classes of up to 35 students. I have helped four year old pupils take their first steps in arithmetic and forty plus year old students finally understand how algebra works. In accounting I have worked with 16 year olds studying accounting for the first time for A Levels or CAT or AAT and 40+ year olds who have working in accounting for a long time and are studying for their professional exams.

I have helped students gain confidence in their own mathematical ability when they have been convinced by the academic system that they are incapable of doing well in the subject. I have also helped higher attaining students to challenge themselves and aspire to become even better. Most recently my Year 7 students were the only gold medallists in the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge in my secondary school. They did considerably better than all the other Year 7 students and even all the Year 8 students in the school who sat the same exam.

Tutoring Approach:

During the last two decades I have worked with many hundreds of students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly. Depending on the amount of time available, I usually help students cement their mastery of the foundations of arithmetic and algebra before moving on to establish fluency in statistics, geometry and problem solving.
