Having lived in London and South East England since then, our family moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2012, primarily to raise our children in a less chaotic and more natural environment. We've had no regrets at all...and our various dogs and cats are similarly happy with the move!

I have always been passionate about English, from the weekly spelling tests and grammar exercises of primary school to the privilege of being taught at A Level by Tolkien's grandson. His vibrant, interactive approach shaped my ongoing learning and fired my imagination. After leaving Edinburgh University with a Masters in English Language and Literature, I went on to take a TEFL qualification and used this when travelling abroad in Turkey and throughout the Caribbean. I am delighted that I continue to work in the area of EAL with overseas students in British schools, and that technology has allowed me to work with individuals in their home countries, via Skype.

My love of English directed my career, working first at the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an independent theatre producer in London, and a theatre advertising executive on accounts such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats' and Cameron Mackintosh's 'Les Miserables'.

In 2008, my partner and I began the home education of our two children at primary stage. It was both challenging and inspirational and the experiences and knowledge I gained during those years - not purely academic, but also the different ways and methods of learning, the different developmental stages of children, the different learning styles of children - continue to inform my present day tutoring.

While home educating, and with my love of theatre, I founded an educational theatre group, Active Arts, with Margo Gunn, a teacher and director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. We worked with a wide age range of home educated and mainstream school children, providing workshops on various Shakespeare plays including 'Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Tempest' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Workshops were also designed specifically in support of GCSE/IGCSE work. As passionate advocates of Shakespeare, our approach was active and energetic, lifting Shakespeare off the page and introducing his plays, his language and his theatricality in an engaging and tangible manner. I was thrilled to be able to resurrect this work in the Highlands, initially at a local primary school, conducting 4 workshops for Primary 4-Primary 7, resulting in workshop presentations of 'The Tempest' and 'Macbeth'.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to home educating my two children and running Active Arts, my personal and professional lives led me into private tutoring and I have been a private tutor in English Language and Literature since 2009, working alongside children and young people from age 5 upwards, whether on general literacy issues, EAL or focusing specifically on exam work, from SATS, Nationals and GCSEs, through to A Levels, Highers and beyond. Tutees have been those in mainstream state schools, leading UK private schools and home education, following the English and Scottish curriculums, as well as IGCSEs with providers including Cambridge, OOL and Edexcel.

A number of my tutees have challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Tourette's and dyslexia, and the combination of experience, research and support courses have built my knowledge and understanding in these areas.

While I am registered with tutoring agencies, many of my tutees come via personal recommendation and I was delighted that tutees I had worked with in England chose to continue working with me via Skype after our move to Scotland.

Critically, I am PVG checked, and would be happy to provide evidence of this, together with references and qualification documentation.

Tutoring Approach:

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
My approach is not one of 'dip in and out' for an hour, or 'one size fits all', but of creating a relaxed, enjoyable, constructive atmosphere and building a relationship within which the young person's potential can be maximised, against a tailored, individual approach. While texts and challenges might be shared by various tutees, learning styles, atmospheres for learning, methods for learning, will always be different.
As importantly, my approach places great value on the parents, their involvement and their right and need for clear, ongoing and comprehensive communication. As such, I am often in regular contact with both my tutees and their parents, should they require it, outside of tutorials.

If you're looking for someone to ignite a love of English, to build confidence, to be energetic, to make learning enjoyable, active, off the page, accessible, then, here I am!

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
For many young people with whom I work, English and everything to do with it - their texts, their homework, punctuation, close reading, writing an essay - is a minefield. Often, what holds them back is a mixture of low confidence, fear of getting it wrong, and simply not having grasped the 'map' of how to 'do it'.

One of my main motivations, is to make English accessible; to take away the fear factor, to provide clear and simple structures, to grasp some key exam techniques, to demystify the exam paper, to clarify what the heck the exam paper is testing them on; to remind tutees that they have, naturally, learned one of the most difficult languages in the world and are fully capable of expressing themselves on paper, under pressure and against time.

However whimsical it may sound, as with many things in life, self-belief and understanding are powerful tools for success.


MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
The demand for private tutoring is growing exponentially. As The Telegraph reported in 2012, "more than a quarter of parents use private tutoring to supplement their children's education", spending "6bn a year in the UK." A double page spread in Femail, February 2015, states research that almost 1 in 4 children are now privately tutored, with pupils at private schools almost twice as likely to have private tutoring than those from state schools. Whatever explanation there is for this rise, cost to parents remains an obvious barrier to its provision.

I am, of course, a 'business', but I also firmly believe that access to tutoring should be made as wide as possible; education is a right and not a privilege. As such, while I have a standard rate for 1-1 tutoring, I am also very happy to discuss your requirements with you and to look at options available, such as small group tutoring where the cost per head can be significantly reduced.

I am a young and enthusiastic private tutor with more than 6 years' experience, specialising in English Literature. I am familiar with a wide range of literature, including many popular school set texts. I welcome tuition requests from students at all levels and of all ages.

I hold a First Class BA degree in English as well as an MA in Victorian Studies with Distinction, both from the University of Exeter. I am also in my final year of a PhD in Victorian Literature at the University of London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught a range of ages and abilities in English Literature, both in the UK and the US. I have tutored children learning to read, primary school children, secondary school students (KS3, GCSE and A level), university students (at BA and MA level), and adult learners (including those studying an online course and those studying with the Open University).

Three years ago I also began giving tuition on English grammar and punctuation to adult learners wishing to improve their business communication skills.

I have helped students write clear, effective and successful personal statements for university applications for more than 7 years.

I also have experience of helping teach primary school children to read, write, and improve their comprehension skills.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is tailored to each individual students according to their needs, following a consideration of their strengths and weaknesses in the course of the first two sessions. This enables me to teach and enthuse each student. When students are shown different ways of looking at a text, and ways in which it relates to their own lives, literature becomes much more accessible, encouraging them to study and achieve better academic grades.

Extra tutoring gives students individual attention beyond the scope of the classroom, and offers an opportunity to look at set texts in more detail, and at the right pace.

Improving students' confidence is central to my approach to tutoring. With individually tailored tutoring, determination to succeed, and improved confidence, my students are able to achieve excellent grades and reach their full potential.

Relaxed - it is crucial to see how the student thinks and take it from there. Everybody is different and in order to understand where the difficulties may lie, one must take the time to appraise how the student is thinking and which areas are causing the most problems. Using a number of examples, it can often be revealing to the student when one thinks of a scenario in a different way. However, it is imperative that the student appreciates that the attainment of knowledge and the ability to reason and apply that knowledge comes from drive, enthusiasm and structured revision. After tutoring, I normally arrange for students to meet with my contacts in the field of biology and public health so that they may gain some extra practical experience and/or some work experience before their next career step. Ben is a social person and loves to get to know the people he works for, so he can really reflect their character and what they want, so to produce the highest quality work for and give them exactly what they are after. Ben aims to spend time chatting with you in advance so that your time with me is so much more productive.
Ben grew up in West Africa where his parents worked amongst the poor coordinating small-scale development projects. This had a massive impact on his life and photographic practice affecting how he relates to the world around him. In his photographic work, he has taken a special interest in reflecting stories and voices through his images. For example, he travelled in Uganda and Thailand and used photography to be the 'voice' of the people he photographed.
Although Ben's formative years were spent in Africa he was educated in Guildford, Surrey at George Abbot School that specialised in the expressive arts. During these years, his creative flare became more apparent when he took A-levels in Fine Art, Sculpture, and Photography. He progressed onto doing a Foundation Degree in Action Photography at Truro College where he specialised in Sport, the Natural world and Social Documentary and began to prepare for a more commercial direction. Ben still maintained his roots in expressive art during the foundation degree but also developed his technical skills thoroughly. Ben had the opportunity to be the photographer for 24/7 magazines in July 2008 at the Newquay Ripcurl Surfing Festival.
In 2009, he progressed on to Plymouth University to study for his BA Hons in Photography where he achieved a 2.1 studying under Stephen Vaughan and Dr. Simon Standing. During this course, he spent time looking intricately into the how we view our bodies and others around us. He concluded the year specializing in fine art nudes and portraiture, with a project called 'The Paradox of Perfect Beauty'. This study challenges the ideologies of beauty in history, sculpture, and figurative representation and critically analyzes the standardized figures and body shape used in art as well as in modern day commercial advertising, fashion and other types of portraiture. In the final exhibition, Ben aimed to present a personal discovery of body image and consequent self-affirmation. Ben was fortunate to be able to exhibit some of his work at the D & A D-New Blood Exhibition in London in June 2010.
Many photographers say they are good but even the perfect image that ben has he can still see my own flaws in you get the highest quality with me and won't be disappointed. In this digital age, many people can snap you but ben can give you an artistic flair, which is also of superior quality. He is sure that you will want to share the photographs he produces. Personal Description:
I am a secondary school teacher of French & Spanish, currently working and living in London. I am MFL Deputy Coordinator in my current school and am constantly thinking of new and innovative ways to teach languages to young people in an engaging manner. It's quite the challenge!

I am originally from Northern Ireland but live in SW London with my partner. Outside of school, I am a keen football fan, enjoy staying fit through various activities and love listening to any music made between 1965 and 1975!

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English in a Spanish secondary school during my Erasmus year and currently work as an MFL Deputy Coordinator at an 'outstanding' secondary school on the outskirts of west London.

Tutoring Approach:

I will take the same approach to tutoring as I do to my teaching - enthusiastic and well planned lessons that engage the student in the language. Explaining what is required for the exam is far easier when there are high levels of engagement.

I'm a graduate of the University of Edinburgh's MA (Hons) Latin degree. I've got a working background in arts management and administration, but I'm hoping to utilise my degree to encourage prospective Latinists to give the subject a go!

Teaching Experience:

I began tutoring in Latin and English Literature five years ago, both for beginners and up to GCSE. I currently have a tutee learning beginner's Latin. While at university I tutored other students in beginner's Latin and Classical Civilisation. I've also spent the past few years providing training for adults in the workplace, so I'm happy to tutor adult learners (both beginners and experienced) as well.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer tutoring using practical methods - such as discussions and games - rather than just learning by rote. However, I adapt my tutor style based on what the tutee requires. I've been trained in a variety of methods to engage young and adult learners, and will try out several to see what suits the tutee best. For more experienced learners, such as A-Level / Advanced Higher candidates, I will identify which areas of the subject (vocabulary, grammar, literature) need most tuition, and decide with the tutee which to focus upon. I am happy to tutor individuals or in small groups (in which case a discounted rate can be agreed upon.)

I graduated from the University of Peloponnese in Greece 2 years ago. I studied Greek Literature - Greek Philology. Now, I have my Master's degree in Classics at Newcastle University. The final thesis of my undergraduate studies had the title 'An interpretive approach to the Prologue of Philoctetes and Ajax: the character of Odysseus'. My dissertation's topic in my postgraduate studies is ''The borderlines of sanity: the transition from madness to rationality in the heroes of Sophocles and Euripides'. I am interested in the ancient Greek texts of all the periods. However, I can teach Greek of all stages, since my mother tongue is Greek and my degree is on it.

I used to teach Greek at students of all ages in private lessons. More specifically, I used to help them with their homework for school and prepare them for their exams. Moreover, I had completed my practice at 4th High School in Kalamata, Greece, where I was teaching ancient and modern Greek. I have experience in teaching both children and adults.
