Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to teach the concepts clearly. Once the student has
the fundamental concepts straight then academic attainment follows naturally.

Many pupils struggle with maths and physics because of poor explanations
of the concepts involved. Schools often rely on rote memorisation and cramming, as
alternative to understanding. My approach is to explain the derivation of
material. A successful technique is to work through the pupil's choice of homework
or revision problem exercises or past exam papers, showing how each exercise can
be solved. This way the tutoring is targeted at exactly those areas that require
help and is also most directly relevant to achieving exam success.

I studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and I am now a full time theatre director, working freelance. I have worked on shows in the West End, at the National Theatre and the Almeida Theatre among others.

My literature specialties are Shakespeare, American literature and all literature of the last thirty years.

I worked as a volunteer teacher at an international school in Swaziland for three months, running drama classes and English classes. I also coached the school rugby team. In the drama classes I focused very much on basic dramatic skills through games and exercises, while the English classes were much more specific, focusing on Shakespeare texts and working in particular on Graham Swift's 'Waterland', which was a set text for the IB exam that year. I am currently affiliated with the National Youth Theatre as well as several drama schools; I work with educational projects in theatres and drama schools around London, working closely and extensively with students and young people.

Tutoring Approach:

When I tutor I like to be very open and conversational with the student. What is especially important is that the student comes away with the belief not that they have been dictated to, but that they have discovered things for themselves. I ask a lot of questions, guiding the student towards a conclusion rather than imposing it directly. This makes for a very interactive and exciting experience, an experience that contrasts perfectly with the proscriptive, curricular methods of traditional schoolteaching.

My approach also enables me to adapt to the needs of each individual student, and to have conversations both with them and with their parents. I recognise that each tutee has specific, unique needs, and I am totally prepared to adjust my style to such needs.

I am a 44 yr old graduate of Oxford University, where I studied French and German, and a postgraduate of the University of Manchester, where I obtained a Masters and Doctorate in English. I'm currently an Associate Tutor at the Universities of Salford and Edge Hill. I live in West Yorkshire, but can also cover South Lancs and Manchester.

Teaching Experience:

I'm really enjoying teaching some individual pupils at GCSE and A-level at the moment and now have the time to take on some more.

I have been teaching English in Higher Education since 2004. During this time I also taught an A-level student English on an individual basis, as extra preparation for Oxbridge entry - the student gained a place at Oxford. I've also taught two summer schools for visiting American students at the University of Manchester, and a first year university student privately last year.

I have experience with AQA syllabuses in French GCSE and English (Literature) GCSE and A-level (Gothic and Pastoral), and also OCR French.



I also worked for some years in the retail/hospitality sector, where I was an induction trainer, and had some involvement with NVQ assessment.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the most important thing in teaching is to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where students are not afraid to ask any questions. I like to avoid overt formality, and make the teaching as enjoyable as possible. I'm very encouraging and positive, but within this will always offer constructive criticism when it's needed. I make sure sessions end with clear goals about what students need to do to improve - clear and achieveable goals, that I will check your progress with. I enjoy teaching a great deal, and will push you to achieve your very best.

For under 16s, I have a programme for teaching English, French, and German. This includes conversation, grammar, composition, and working with literature suited to the pupil's age range. It's flexible and pitched to any age and ability between 11 and 16.

I have successfully completed my PGCE course (Secondary Mathematics) at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2011. Prior to this, I hold a combined degree in Pure Mathematics and Statistics. I have also been on a number of courses covering behaviour management, AFL, pace in teaching/learning and differentiation.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experiences began at Woodlands School and Seven Kings High School, as part of my PGCE training and I had the opportunity to teach across the full ability range of year 7 to 11. I also fully participated in helping pupils in the Statistics and pure Mathematics AS Level classes. I finished my most recently teaching practice at Woodlands School where I taught maths across range and the use of ICT interactive board for maths lessons. My teaching practice was encouraging because I enjoyed interacting with students at various levels. During my teaching practice, I planned my lessons to very good standard and appropriate and challenging learning objectives which include a variety of activities and assessment techniques. I have gained a lot of experience from especially the one to one and that modified my teaching of low ability classes, concentrating on breaking tasks and making lessons interesting enough to lengthen student's concentration.
In my most recently employment as a Maths teacher at Woodlands School, Basildon, I have been mostly entrusted with foundation GCSE classes, KS3 mixed ability sets and numeracy classes.

Tutoring Approach:

Having had the opportunity to teach across board for this while had provided me with a wide knowledge base for my professional conduct as a teacher. I constantly upgrade my teaching methods through evaluations and feedbacks I get from pupils and sometimes through learning walks by SLTs. I am confident I have acquired a lot strategies and methodologies for teaching all topics to all years and sets. I thoroughly prepared each lesson taking into consideration previous knowledge and suitability of the time it's taught. I recorded all homework and some important class exercise which are used to monitor children's progress and to find ways of how to address any inconsistencies. I have often liaised with parents if I needed parental support. For bottom sets, I learned the importance of the use of pictures and visual stimulus to meet pupils' learning needs. I have mastered the art of breaking up lessons into chunks to make it simpler for pupils to follow and finding straight steps pupils can easily grasp with complex topics. This has been one of my enviable achievements as it has always interested my maths colleagues. Concerning year sevens and lower forms, I learnt a lot about the importance of giving rewards in the form of stamps, commendations and stickers as motivation. Every learning has been thoroughly planned using Maths Framework Standards with levels and differentiation. For bottom sets working in partnership with support staff for SEN and EAL pupils has been very enjoyable and rewarding.
The opportunity to be a year 10 and during my last term a year 7 form tutor as well as the homework club tutor at Woodlands School had also given me a strong knowledge base on the pastoral care of students and participations in extracurricular duties.

My name is Karly, I am a qualified teacher of Science. I currently work full time as a Teacher of Science and am one of the lucky people who can say they genuinely enjoy their job!! I am passionate about my subject and aim to help learners discover the fun that can be had!

I have experience in preparing candidates for their examinations, helping to prep to allow them to reach their full potential e.g. Revision techniques, guidance etc.

I am available to tutor Chemistry, Physics and Biology at KS3 (Year 7-9)and all three sciences at GCSE. At A-Level I teach and specialise in delivering Biology (Edexcel). Tuition is differentiated according to ability.

I am professional, friendly and fun. I am an approachable person and I like to make learning simple and bite-sized, enabling learners to enhance their understanding. I am efficient with time and like to ensure learners feel they have really made progress after their lessons!

I take a holistic approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the student becomes engaged within a fuller understanding of the period being studied. As a former student and teach of history, I realise that the principal block to a tutee's understanding of historical concepts is a lack of immersion within the relevant time-frames and thus an inability to fully comprehend why certain actions were taken, and the wider effect this had.

Thus in my approach I am firm believer that it is as important for every student to understand to a higher level than that offered by the current state curriculum the context of the period they are studying. As a consequence I offer tailored introductions to said period's culture, economy, religious and political setting, and even physical geography.

My intimate knowledge of the state education system and beyond has imbued me with the ability to gauge how assignments will be assessed and thus I can work with students not only on improving their knowledge, but showcasing this in highly-marked, structured and coherent written forms.

Graduated from Leeds University in Genetics and have a deep passion for science. After leaving University, I have worked in the Computing and IT industry to Project Manager level, mainly for large blue chip financial companies such as General Accident (now Aviva), Standard Life, Bank of Scotland, GE Corporate and others. In 2004 I decided to return to my original love of science and gained a PGCE teaching qualification to teach science.

It is my aim to transfer my passion and love for science to my students as well as an understanding of the subject in order to enable them to AIM HIGHER and ace their exams.

Building on my science qualification, I gained a PGCE teaching qualification from Huddersfield University to become a qualified teacher of science in 2005. I am able to tutor from primary, secondary (including entrance exams) through GCSE, A Levels, BTEC (Level 2 and Level 3) and Adult Foundation Degree level.

Tutoring Approach:

The tutor is the expert in subject knowledge and learning but it is the tutee who has the paramount role in their own education and excelling in their subjects. I firmly believe that the role of a tutor is that of a catalyst and the child's role in their own learning is of greater importance. I aim to guide the tutee to learn in a structured manner that so that the child does not waste their time jumping from topic to topic, randomly browsing a bit here and a bit there, as often happens. To do that, as tutor, I will facilitate their learning on a 1 to 1 basis so that they may gain a deeper and greater depth of knowledge of the subject. I will provide the subject knowledge expertise and transfer my knowledge to the tutee in a manner and at a level that is appropriate to the tutee but pushing them beyond their limits to the next stage. To achieve that grade "A*" a GCSE tutee should be able to understand basic AS Level material. For an A Level tutee to achieve the highest grades at A Level they should be able to cope with University first year material with ease. It is my aim to enable my tutees to achieve these goals.

I will work to improve the child's self esteem, self belief and confidence in their ability to do well. As a trained hypnotherapist I am particularly qualified to boost a child's self-esteem. Once the tutee is confident in their subject knowledge, then we will work on exam techniques and exam practice in order to enable the tutee to ace the exams and significantly improve their grades.

I will work with each tutee on an individual basis and adjust the tuition lessons to their needs. There is no standard one size fits all model with me. Homework will be set to enable the subject matter to be reinforced with some self-learning at home. Exam practice will be key to enable the tutee to become proficient in their exams and achieve the highest grades. Exam technique contributes significantly towards exam success. We will always work to enable the tutee to AIM HIGHER.

I am also able to guide sixth formers with their UCAS applications and personal statements.

At all times parents will be involved with the learning of their child so that they may guide and support their child's education and monitor progress. Parental involvement is also a major factor in the child's success.

For the science lessons my aim is to include as much practical work as is possible, where this is feasible in a tuition setting, keeping safety of the child of paramount importance.

If your child is quiet and shy or is in a mediocre class or is just coasting along or is struggling to achieve the grades required to get into the University course of their choice, whether it is Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Engineering, Computing, Optometry or other science course, then tuition with myself will enable them to boost their grades and give them the advantage that they need. Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. A good tutor will help guide tutees who want to learn to get ahead and avoid becoming disinterested or bored. Why leave it to chance?

It is never too early to start boosting a child's education. For primary school children it is important that they get a good start to their education and do not lag behind. A tuition boost will enable them to get into a better school or a higher stream set so that they do not have to struggle or get left behind when the come to do their GCSE and A Levels.

I also have experience of vocational courses such as the BTEC and Applied Science courses and I am able to provide the additional guidance and support required to ensure that your child achieves Distinctions rather than passes in their assignments. It is not my policy to do the tutee's coursework for them but to help, guide and support their research and provide constructive feedback.

Tutees will be required to complete all assessments and homework on time in advance of the relevant lesson.

I have a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Creative Arts, comprising Textile Design and Fine Art, from Bath Spa University, and a Masters Degree in Fashion and Textiles Design from the same university. After completing my degree as a mature student in 2006 I worked as a Textile Designer for a year before setting up a luxury lingerie business, which I closed in 2010 due to the financial situation. However, this experience taught me a great deal about setting up a business and manufacturing a product. Since then I have been self employed as a practising artist/designer and sell my work both online and through exhibitions and fairs.

Teaching Experience:

I spent school holidays working with disadvantaged youngsters on playgroups in Salford, Manchester. After leaving school I spent a year as a Community Service Volunteer in a school for blind children in Newcastle upon Tyne. This involved working with children from the age of three to eleven. I have also helped children with their reading skills at my local primary school when my own children were young. During my degree I mentored students, and completed a work placement at a sixth form college in Birmingham where I tutored students in drawing skills.

I live in Cumbria and have a range of work experiences to draw on, including researching for the BBC daily survey and the Centre for Social Policy Research and Development. I have also worked as a housemother for children with learning difficulties, as an advocate within the voluntary sector and as an advocacy development worker.

After gaining my PhD, my more recent work has been as an Education lecturer in higher education which has also involved me in a number of research initiatives, tutoring undergraduate and postgraduate students and working on research governance and ethics. I have a wide range of peer reviewed publications and a number of current book contracts. I believe education is a right for all people at all levels and that it is best viewed as a lifelong experience.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked at a college teaching A level Sociology and more recently at a Russell Group university for 8 years teaching a wide variety of topics to undergraduate and postgraduate students including sociology, social policy and politics, social psychology, social theory, person centred approaches, gender studies, disability theory, social research, critical thinking, communication & study skills. My last two national student survey results gave 93% and 100% for quality.

I have also previously taught on women returning to work courses through the University of Lancaster as well as youth and community and training the trainers courses.

I studied at Stanford University for four years, including one year through its study abroad programme in Paris. I have also worked many years as a professional musician, touring in the UK, Europe, USA and Mexico.

Teaching Experience:

I taught English to high school students for one year in France.
In a night school in Utah (USA) I taught English as a second language to adults.
I have taught music (guitar, ukulele and piano) for nearly 10 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in student-centred teaching, so rather than impose strict rules I approach each student as an individual in order to find the best approach for gaining skills and confidence in the subject. Structure is also important, however, and it's important to use exercises and repetition to really come to terms with a subject. Games and songs have their place, too; let's have fun while we're learning!

I am someone who has always been drawn to working with children because I am generally passionate about their education and development. I have routinely worked with children in different capacities from volunteering with a SEN playgroup, to working as both a tutor and teacher. I am an easy-going person who finds it easy to relate to families from all walks of life, and take great joy in getting to know people.

Teaching Experience:

I have two years' experience of teaching children of all ages from KS1 all the way up to A-Level. Half of that time was spent working for a private tuition company, while the other half was spent working as a supply teacher.
