Personal Description:
Hello,

I am Alfiya. I am a professional, qualified and experienced tutor in individual and group Russian teaching. I have been in Edinburgh for almost 11 years and have been a tutor in Russian, freelance interpreter and translator for all this time. During my tutoring career I have assisted almost 250 learners with teaching Russian. I like communicating and meeting new people. I'm friendly, easy-going, open, quick-minded. In my free time I like reading, learning about different cultures, going in for sport, socialising.

Teaching Experience:

I graduated from Irkutsk State Linguistic University in Russia in 1996. Had been teaching English for Russian students and Russian for foreign students at Kazan State University for 15 years (Russia). My specialities are: Russian from Elementary to Advanced.

In 1999 I studied at the Open Society Institute-Samara where I attended Soros Intensive Teacher Training Course for University Instructors in Samara Russia. In 2000 I finished the course in 'Improvement of Professional Skills on Teaching Methodology of Foreign Languages' at Kazan State University in Russia. In 2005 I attended the Conversational Spanish course in Spanish Centre of Education and Culture at Kazan State University. Back to Russia I worked as a senoir lecturer in English and Russian at Kazan State University. I participated as a tutor in English in the Presidential Programme of Russia by giving lectures on Business English for top managers, directors of companies and firms and businessmen to take part in international business as Russia opened up to worldwide and free trade. 10 of my former students went onto internships in Greece, Italy, Denmark, Germany and Japan after finishing this programme. I am the author of four scientific publications in the field of linguistic relations in Russian, English and Tatar.

While living in the UK I have worked as a freelance tutor and translator for Scottish&Newcastle, Scottish Parliament, NHS and Rudolf Steiner School. I am really proud of the fact that among my students are people of different ages, knowledge of Russian and purposes of learning it and who are professionals in different fields for example in language and science teaching, sales and marketing, medical research, social work, to name just a few.

I have completed successfully the HNC and HND Tourism course at Edinburgh college.

Tutoring Approach:

Always try to make students interested in the subject I teach. Create a ftiendly and an encouraging learning environment. Not afraid to praise them even if they do not get immediate good results. Tend to get feedback from them. Plan carefully each lesson. Use the Internet and PC in preparing for lessons. Try to make lessons interesting, various by combining different aspects of learning a language: Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening, Speaking, Writing and Reading. Each course that you will attend is tailored to your needs and depends on your level of knowing Russian and your purpose of learning. I teach Russian through the Skype system as well. Each month organise Russian Converstaion Club for my students to help them learn some more about Russia apart from lessons. We discuss various topics in Russian (the topic of each session is given in advance), do different activities based on the theme of the session. The aim of Russian Conversation Club is to improve Russian conversational skills of my students and help them learn more about Russian culture and history.

Personal Description:
I am a jovial person who enjoys the vocation of teaching; I love to see the light go on in a learner. I am an Englishman abroad and wouldn't change where I live for a moment.

I am a keen musician (very amatuer) and my limited spare time is spent in my home studio mucking about and not getting anything actually achieved. I also enjoy the restoration of my house and garden which, like the Forth bridge, will never be finished!

I am a dog owner and nature lover and have a broad teaching style; I prefer the learner to dictate the style and I find the methods to fit.

Please feel free to ask questions.

Thank you

Teaching Experience:

I have been a teacher for over 20 years which culminated in a Head of Dept roll for 5 years (Business Studies). I have been very fortunate in my career to have taught all age groups many different subjects. I have returned to mainstream secondary education, teaching Business Studies and ICT following A level ICT at Coleg Menai and tutition for Single parents (charity) which has provided me with different skills and approaches rather than just formal classroom led instruction.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a holistic type and I always want the learner to be happy with an answer they give and know "why" the answer is correct. I hopefully bring humour (debatable) and a wide variety of methods to my teaching along with contemporary examples.

At present I am available in the evenings (Mon to Thurs, 5 to 8).

Please note that my prices include no additional travel expenses up to 15 miles from my home and I am perfectly happy to offer group discounts - the more learners the cheaper the individual cost.

Thanks for looking.

Personal Description:
Salut - Je m'appelle Solène ( pronounced so-len )

I was born and brought up in Paris, although much of my family roots lie in Brittany. I came to England initially to learn the language - but ended up meeting my future husband and starting a family here in Dorking, Surrey.

Teaching Experience:

Apart from the obvious fact that I am a native French speaker - I have been teaching French since 2009 in schools, including Duke Of Kent in Ewhurst and Petite Ecole in Reigate, but mainly privately to exam students or adults wishing to improve their skills. I have also been called upon to help with some translation and making phone calls to France to assist people with such issues as property.

Tutoring Approach:

Having initially gauged a student's abilities in the language - I will prepare each lesson to their specific needs & requirements - whether it be working on grammar or perhaps general conversational skills. My aim is to give people confidence and make learning enjoyable.

Personal Description:
I'm a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

I started as a trainee accountant in 1999, working for a variety of businesses and gradually gaining experience and expertise, becoming a member of the ACCA in 2008. In the last few years I have worked as an for the BBC, Lloyds TSB, Bread Youth Project, the Furniture Re-Use Network, Windmill Hill City Farm and Aster Group. Since 2010 I have also been doing freelance work for clients in commerce and the not-for-profit sector.

I have recently started teaching bookkeeping to clients whose duties include recording finance transactions but who do not have formal training in that kind of work.

Teaching Experience:

on and off since October 2010

Tutoring Approach:

Double-entry bookkeeping is a beautiful and robust way of recording financial transactions, but all-too-often it is shrouded in mystery and bristling with incomprehensible jargon. So instead of using double-entry bookkeeping, many people use columns of numbers, either on spreadsheets or in big red books, and risk making mistakes, leaving things out, and losing track of what has been paid for and what is still outstanding.

I can teach you double-entry bookkeeping if you are methodical and willing to learn -- you do not have to be a whizz at finance and you do not have to be fantastically numerate. We will proceed at your pace. Initial sessions will cover the very basics, and we will not need a computer for this, but as you progress you will reach a point at which it would be beneficial to apply your learning directly to the computerised bookkeeping system you are using or going to use in your business; if you do not have real transactions to record ("post"), we can invent some and post them using a practice set of accounts.

Learning happens best in a comfortable and un-hurried environment in which the focus is on acquiring skills and knowledge, and not on getting the accounts sorted out.

If you are interested in learning how to record finance transactions properly, please send me a message telling me a little about yourself, and what you need, and what you know about bookkeeping already (and it's perfectly OK if you don't know anything).

Personal Description:
I am have graduated with a First Class degree Actuarial Science at London School of Economics.
I have achieved A*A*A*A in my recent A Level results and have also represented my country in various mathematics competition which include me winning an Honourable Mention in Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad.
Have also achieved Gold Medal in National Physics Competition in my country.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously volunteered with the Salvation Army and had taught GCSE students over there. Overall it went quite well and I saw improvement in their ability to answer questions and attitude towards the subject.
I have also been an assistant Mathematics Olympiad coach. This job required me to lecture some of the best students in Malaysia so that they can score well in national competitions.
Thus, I believe I am able to teach students of different abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I usually start with the basics. I believe that with a good basic, the student would then be able to improve him/herself to be better instead of just idly solving a question and showing the steps to the student.
Also, I would try to include real life application if its possible so that the student remain interested and understand more about the things being studied.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to tailor my approach to the student, depending on their age, level and what they hope to get out of the sessions, as well as their preferred learning style. For younger children I would tend to include more activities, whereas for students studying for exams I would focus more on helping with coursework, revising topics covered in class, and exercises.

Personal Description:
I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. By virtue of having studied several subjects at a high level, I empathise with the feeling of finding something difficult, and have the patience and technique to get past this. I am not a single-subject specialist who might find it difficult to understand why others struggle in their area of expertise.
For students who are preparing for exams, my knowledge of examination technique, and an empathy with the marker, should be invaluable. I always keep in mind the importance of the student's goals, but never take myself too seriously.

Teaching Experience:

My whole career has been geared towards some form of teaching. I have trained groups of adults and children, as well as individuals, in elements of mathematics, psychology, actuarial science, pensions, and even tennis! Recently I tutored my 14 year-old son (who attends a sports academy, not a mainstream school) in three IGCSEs, for which he obtained excellent grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I look at what is important for the student. I emphasise clear, logical ways of working, and clear presentation. I make sure that they realise that they not only need to understand why they are doing something, but they must also be able to explain it clearly. Explaining a difficult concept to someone else can often be the best way to make yourself remember it. I am calm and patient, and English is my first language, all of which can help when a student finds something tricky.

I am consistently available for tutoring during weekday daytimes. I will sometimes be available in the evenings and at weekends, but this will be by arrangement and should not be relied upon.

Personal Description:
Hello there! My name is Sam and I'm a full time private tutor who has moved back to London this year. I completed a master's degree in maths at Leeds University and have been teaching ever since. I'm still very passionate about maths and am applying for a PhD to start in the next academic year. My personal time is taken up by studying the areas of maths I want to pursue (category theory and topos theory), learning more undergraduate maths courses so that I can tutor a wider number of areas, rock climbing, highlining and playing gigs. I also have a few maths related side projects such as co-writing a maths textbook aimed at those who have just finished their A levels, and error checking/giving feedback for a soon-to-be published book on topos theory by a researcher in Canada. I enjoy a productive life focussed around my passions of which teaching comes first, as I find nothing more satisfying than helping people and seeing their grades grow. I really appreciate you taking the time to see what I have to offer as a tutor, and hope to hear from you soon.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching in a variety of different areas and environments has been my primary source of work for nearly 8 years now. For the past year and a half since I finished my masters I have been a full time private tutor of maths, predominately working in Leeds. The variety of levels I've had the opportunity to teach has been exceptional. I have taught at GCSE, As, A and further maths level for school level maths along with teaching at every level of undergraduate mathematics, teaching both on a one to one basis and conducting group tutorials with groups of 20 second year students. In particular, it has been deeply gratifying to help foreign students secure undergraduate positions and students with health issues who have needed extra assistance due to being absent from school.
During my degree, I held weekly tutorials for the lower years and gave informal guitar lessons. During my gap year, I worked for six days a week as a climbing instructor for most of the year and taught guitar on my day off. It was over my A level years that I got my first teaching experience as a piano teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

One great difference and indeed benefit of being a private tutor over a teacher is the need to adapt to each individual student. I am in the great position of being able to focus on one student per lesson, and I wouldn't be doing the best work I can if I didn't take advantage of this. My style of teaching therefore revolves around learning from each lesson about the student's evolving strengths and weaknesses, so that I can focus my lesson planning around them for our next meeting. Along with this, I try to encourage students with positive reinforcement. Frankly speaking, maths is a scary subject for a lot of people and I have found that increasing a student's confidence in their ability does wonders for their grades, proving their confidence right. Patience and understanding are key to this form of encouragement. On top of all this, I have to take into account what level the student is studying at. Maths is a very different beast every single year, the challenge of understanding quadratic equations for the first time is very different in nature to understanding quotient groups for the first time, and so I change how I teach depending on the level and age of the student.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching experience in schools

I arrived in the UK in 2009 as a Foreign Language Assistant. I was teaching French in rural primary schools around Suffolk.

After my PGCE, I started working at Thomas Gainsborough School as a French teacher. I have taught primary school students at local primary schools (Wells Hall, Bures Primary School, Nayland Primary School) and pupils from Year 7 to Year 13. I have a very good knowledge of the GCSE and A-level exams.

I have also taught Spanish to students in Year 7, 8 and 9.

-I have taught French to two mature students, for leisure. I was teaching them according to their needs: one student wanted to discuss the news and I was printing articles that we would study. I also helped this student taking care of paper work related to her house in France. My other student only wanted to practise the speaking, therefore we would speak in French for about one hour.

-I have taught French to two secondary school students who purely loved the French language. We would do games, grammar, speaking activities and we even made some crêpes!

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor my lessons to your needs or the needs of your child. I can teach French to beginners, help with homework, re-explain what wasn't understood in the classroom, study novels or simply have a chat.

I also team taught Yr 9 lessons and I assisted with directing etc in GCSE and A-Level lessons. Alongside academic teaching I led Drama 'actives' after lessons where I created and lead a one hour drama workshop several times a week. Working at Christ's Hospital also gave me the chance to work in a busy theatre environment combining set design, prop making, theatre maintenance, stage management and front of house management. I also directed and co-directed several shows including 'Anything Goes', 'The Crucible', 'Grim Tales', 'Ernie' Incredible Illuciantions', 'Easy Virtue' and 'The Jungle Book'. July 2007 - July 2011 - Pilgrims Language School - Assistant Course Director & Head Of TEFL

• Management (Responsible for a team of staff)
• Lesson Planning & Observations
• Solo Lesson Delivery
• Communication Skills - Working with very young children with no English language

Each Summer I taught English to children aged 7 - 12 from around the world. I lived on site (in a boarding school environment) and I was responsible for teaching, entertaining and caring for the children twenty four hours a day. Having worked for the company for several years I reached the level of Assistant Director and Head of TEFL for the residential course. I was responsible for a team of teaching staff and I ensured they were delivering suitable and stimulating English lessons throughout the course. I also taught a class of my own. As Assistant Director I was a senior part of the management team, ensuring all activity and teaching staff were working happily and correctly. In the absence of the Course Director it was my responsibility alone to ensure the smooth running of our course. I often had to deal with couriers and families and I know how to project a professional, caring, enthusiastic and genuine image. I developed my team work skills, learnt how to thrive under immense pressure and my communication skills were constantly used to their full potential.

Sept 2008 - April 2009 - Kent Youth Theatre - Drama Teacher

• Lesson Planning
• Solo Lesson Delivery
• Team Teaching

I taught children aged from 6 - 16 various theatrical disciplines and dramatic styles. I delivered a three hour workshop weekly. I ensured the children in my care were learning effectively and having a fun and enjoyable time.

March - April 2008 - Point Blank Theatre Company - Drama Facilitator

• Lesson Planning
• Team Teaching
• Behaviour Management
• PR

During a work placement with the Sheffield based theatre company Point Blank I worked with a partner to devise and deliver a cultural drama workshop. I worked as a mentor for two international students who had travelled to the UK to teach school children about their cultures. I taught the two international students how to deliver a successful drama workshop and I helped them shape their own ideas into an educational and enjoyable drama workshop for Primary School children. Alongside this project I also worked with an English partner to create a cultural workshop for deprived children in the city. I contacted The Sheffield Children's Centre and created a relationship with them enabling us to take our workshop to underprivileged children who had never had the chance to express themselves through drama.

June - September 2006 - The Funzone - Playworker

The Fun Zone provided after-school and summer holiday childcare play schemes for children, aged three to twelve. I would lead activities, play group games, prepare and cook the children's meals, clean the rooms, supervise children and be responsible for groups of children on various outings and trips throughout the summer. I learnt how to work with children and how to work effectively to carry out duties such as cooking and cleaning, while making sure the children in my care were both entertained and safe.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a friendly, fun and experienced tutor. I believe a healthy dose of humour and kindness is important when teaching and I am a very professional and hard working person.

Personal Description:
I recently returned to the UK after a number of years living and teaching in China, and now I wish to use the experience i have gained over the years to help students who need to learn English in the UK.
When i am not working i enjoy travelling and playing sport. In addition to living in China, i have also lived in New Zealand and Australia and travelled extensively in Europe.

Teaching Experience:

I have been an ESL teacher for 8 years. My experience has been gained predominantly in China, though i have taught at a college in the UK. I have taught a variety of nationalities and also all ages and levels. I possess both the CELTA and DELTA teaching practice qualifications. I was also an IELTS speaking and writing test examiner for two years and have passed a Cambridge certified online course in the teaching of IELTS.

Tutoring Approach:

Having lived and worked in China for many years, i am aware of the difficulty of learning a foreign language. However,i believe that with the right attitude, approach and guidance it is possible to achieve your study goals in any language.
I believe in establishing realistic and quantifiable goals when beginning tutoring for progress to be measured against. I also believe that work done in a student's own time is as important as work done in a formal classroom setting. Regular review of what has been studied is also vital.

Personal Description:
My name is Umayr. I teach Chemistry, Biology and Maths up to A-Level standard. I also teach GCSE Physics and English Language. In addition to this, I can also teach both numeracy and literacy at primary school level. I am married and I am possibly looking to do PGCE to go into teaching in a school/college later on. I have moved recently to Bradford from London and am new to the area. I have my own transport to travel to any potential tutees.

Teaching Experience:

I have around 10 months of self-employed tutoring experience. I did tutor a fellow class student in A-level maths for a short period of time to improve his understanding of maths, especially pure maths. I also taught chemistry to university students in a university in Poland and was able to help about 70% to 80% of the whole year of first year medical students pass this subject. I provided them out of hours classes to help with certain difficult provided and even provided my own version of written revision notes to help prepare for the exam.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to help the student understand the topic by giving examples and showing solutions with in-depth explanations in simple terms so that the student can understand. I even give the student example questions to try out to make sure they understand the methods or factual knowledge. I believe that a student can only be fully prepared for an exam by attempting past exam papers.

Personal Description:
I am Cambridge graduate and A level and GCSE biology teacher who is looking to take on a few tutees. I have over 15 years teaching experience and was head of biology at my previous school.

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced A level biology tutor who has taught all of the examining board specifications. I have tutored students at all levels of ability and many of these have scored A s and gone on to Oxbridge or Russel group universities . Before becoming a teacher, I worked full time as a private tutor for 7 years which I enjoyed immensely. I have missed both the challenges and the emotional rewards of private tutoring and am now looking for students with whom I can work to help achieve their aspired grades in biology. Over the course of my teaching and tutoring I have build up a large resource of past papers, challenging and informative questions and many approaches to teaching difficult subjects. I also regularly work as an examiner on A level papers and so can offer extensive advice on exam technique and the best approaches to answering questions.

Tutoring Approach:

I am enthusiastic and patient and have been told that I offer a friendly and safe learning environment where students feel supported but also motivated and challenged to improve both their understanding and grades

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm a soon-to-be graduate of a degree in Spanish language and culture, and have experience of living in Spain. My personal interests include art, travel and food, and I have a particular passion for cooking. I'm a friendly person and love to work with people one-on-one.

Teaching Experience:

Private one-on-one language tutor to English speaking students.

Tutoring Approach:

I can teach the language at various levels, with cultural context and an understanding of different registers of Spanish and the ways in which communication differs in Spain compared to the UK. Because of my cultural knowledge and experience, I offer an all-round service and can teach both Spanish for qualifications and exams and for those that wish to live in or travel to Spain and speak like a local. Having learnt Spanish both through formal education and immersive experience I know the pitfalls and common difficulties and can help students avoid them. I also offer classes in English as a foreign language, growing up in a very multicultural area and attending a school with many students from overseas I learned to communicate easily with people that do not speak fluent English, and am passionate about helping people fit into British society by improving their language skills. As with Spanish, lessons can be academically-based or more casual, with a focus on conversation practice if needed.
