Personal Description:
As a school student, I was a confirmed hater of Science! I am still haunted by the drafty labs and memories of sitting in silence on wobbly stools taking notes from ancient text books and carrying out odd practicals with the ubiquitous Potato tuber. It wasn't until I started studying Science as an adult learner in an FE college, where I was taught by inspiring and enthusiastic lecturers, who illustrated important concepts with analogies, diagrams and genuinely interesting practicals, that I began to realise that science was relevant to me and was "my thing".

This experience has stayed with me and has given me a passion for making science exciting and largely the reason that I chose a career in personal tutoring.

I am a professional full-time private tutor. I have recently graduated with an MSc in Science (Medicinal Chemistry and science education studies). I have also graduated with a First class honours degree in Life Sciences (Open) and I have completed a Post-graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education, specialising in Science Education.

Teaching Experience:

I specialised in A level and GCSE tuition and I have extensive experience working with a wide range of students, from those who are struggling and need help understanding the key concepts to those who do well in science but need support to develop the exam technique that will get them the top grades.

I have tutored students working towards exams with all the major exam boards, including AQA (AS, A2 Biology and Chemistry, GCSE core science, GCSE Additional Science, GCSE Biology and Chemistry), OCR (AS, A2 Biology and Chemistry, Salter's Chemistry, 21st Century Science GCSE), WJEC (A level Biology), EDEXCEL (AS and A2 Biology and Chemistry, GCSE, IGCSE)

I also have much experience working with students entering for exams as external candidates and I can provide assistance in making arrangements for this.

In my professional life prior to tuition, I was employed as a company trainer in the catering industry, working with newly employed staff on an individual basis to help them develop the skills and knowledge relevant to their new positions and training existing staff to take on more senior roles. This gave me extensive experience of one-to-one tuition and creating individual training strategies.

Tutoring Approach:

When I begin tutoring a new student, I spend some time getting to know the individual and we begin by discussing their current feelings about Science and what they would like to get out of the tutorial sessions. I also carry out an assessment of the individual's learning style (sounds scary, but it's not, it's just a short quiz). By discovering how the individual learns best, I can structure the tutorials so that they are composed of activities that will be both effective and enjoyable. In all cases, I endeavor to make Science enjoyable and relevant to the individual student as possible and tailor the explanations to their particular interests.

As well as providing subject-specific tuition, I place particular emphasis on the development of study and exam skills. Where relevant, this includes teaching essay writing skills, how to revise, how to approach exams and specific scientific skills, such as data analysis and evaluation, which are often assessed in course work. I also offer tutorial sessions which focus just on study skills, for those who are comfortable with their subject knowledge but need extra support in these areas.

As well as traditional face to face sessions, I also offer fully online lessons using skype and an interactive whiteboard which allows me to interact with students in the same way as in a face-to-face lesson. If you are interested in online tuition but are not sure how it would work please contact me to discuss.

Personal Description:
I did nothing but one-to-one private biology tuition, based in Oxford, for 24 years and was widely regarded as 'Oxford's Premier Biology Tutor'. I have now moved away from Oxford and have been offering my services online only, nationally and worldwide, for the past three years via the medium of Skype and 'Scribblar' - an interactive online whiteboard that is better than face-to-face tuition as there is zero travelling and waiting time and cost and it is more intimate and concentrated than 'in-person' tuition. I charge £60 per hour normally but offer a £10 per hour discount for tuition before 3 pm on weekdays.

Teaching Experience:

27 years (the last three totally online) of one-to-one tuition in A-level, IB and GCSE biology.

Tutoring Approach:

Stick to the specification. Do ALL the past paper questions and go through them with the mark schemes. Take the exam. and get on with your life.

I like to work in a very methodical and structured fashion and not confuse effective work with hard work. The students who say at the end "yes, I learned biology - but, better still I learned how to study" are the ones with whom I know I have really succeeded.

Apart from an internet connection all that you need for tutorials is a thin A4 ring binder with a copy of the specification punched and put into the front and some colored dividers in the back. If you are a retake student I ask you to highlight the specification (in yellow with solid highlighter if you are quite happy with the content; dotted highlighter if you are a bit unhappy with it and no highlighter if you have not done it or have forgotten it). This will tell me where to start and I can estimate to within an hour or so how many lessons will be needed to 'reteach' the syllabus. Effectively I write a textbook for you and give you notes (to be filed in the colored dividers) via e-mail and Scribblar (my interactive online whiteboard) to fill in any gaps in your knowledge. As I cover the specification I highlight my copy in pink so that I can monitor progress. I have CDs of questions that I can post to you that you can work through - each CD is specific to one exam. board and contains not only the most recent AS/A2 papers and mark schemes but also the preceding many years of papers for that board, chopped up into topic headings. So, for example, it will take an hour to 'cover' The Heart and then I'll give you the questions specifically on the heart on that board to do before the next tutorial. It is all very straightforward and actually rather less hard work than doing it in a slapdash, non-systematic fashion. The study skills that you will learn will stand you in good stead throughout life.

I can also advise on coursework/practicals.

Please note that I ONLY tutor online nowadays.

***CURRENTLY LIVING IN GERMANY & AVAILABLE FOR ENGLISH CHECKING (BY E-MAIL) ONLY****

I am a professional in my 30s with degrees in English & Italian Literature (BA 2:1, Warwick 2000) and the History of Medicine & Science (MA Merit, Birkbeck College, University of London). I also hold a CELTA qualification in teaching English Language to adults.

Following my masters degree I studied acting at Rose Bruford College and have performed at fringe venues in London and Belfast though tend now to concentrate on writing for the stage. My book of dramatic monologues, "Untold Lives" was published last year and is now available on Amazon. My first novel, "And I Shall Be Healed" was published by Quickbeam Press in January 2014,

Proof-editing: contact for rates.

In addition to teaching I also offer a proof-reading service so for university essays / research proposals / writing projects, please do contact me for rates.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently living and working as a CELTA qualified EFL teacher in Bonn, Germany. In addition I have 9 years private tutoring experience. Much of this was tutoring GCSE students in English Literature with some history and A'Level students.

In addition to this I hold a CELTA qualificatin and have taught English language at summer schools in Italy.

I hold a CRB.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to proof-editing / English checking is to look primarily at the language. For some clients - university students in particular - it is not appropriate to offer an editorial service as this goes against the rules of university submissions. However, where I think a mistake has been made or something is not clearly expressed - and it is not a simple matter of correcting the language - then I will flag it up to the student so they can look at it again.

My main aim with students is to build their confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. To this end I concentrate on teaching the skills they require to achieve the grades they want. My role is not to replace the teaching they get at school but to compliment it so a tutoring session could concentrate on planning an essay the student has been asked to write or going through specific areas the student needs help with. I won't necessarily give homework - unless required - as I feel students have enough to do without me adding to their workload.

In return I expect my students to engage with the sessions. They don't have to like the subject and of course I'm there to help those who don't understand some things or just need a little help or encouragement, but the student must be prepared to be tutored.

Personal Description:
I've recently returned from New Zealand where I spent a year working in a prestigious secondary school. This year fueled my desire to teach. I've completed a BSc in Sport & Exercise Sciences and I'm currently studying part time at masters level. I will start a PGCE in September 2016 and become a PE teacher upon completion.

I want to tutor because it is a great way to gain experience whilst earning some money to pay my way through my studies. I'd also like to help those in a similar situation as I once was, I got little support from my PE teacher during A levels as he focused on the better performers rather than those looking to excel academically. I wasn't able to afford a tutor and got no other help, this led to me failing to achieve my target grade. I'd like to help people achieve their aims and not feel disappointed (and in my case anxious that I might not get into uni) like I did.

My particular area of expertise is the physiology of sport, I've always been fascinated with anatomy and the way the body works. I've gained a lot of experience working in schools and tutoring in recent years and, as such, feel confident in tutoring all areas of PE at GCSE and A level.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching in all tiers of the educational system. This ranges from coaching and PPA cover in primary schools to work and placements in secondary and SEN schools. I also have experience of providing sports science support to semi-professional and university athletes.

I have also gained a lot of one to one tutoring experience within schools and homes helping tutees, including some that had previously failed, to pass at both GCSE and A level.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't think you can describe my approach in one specific way. I think, like all teaching, tutors should adapt the way they teach dependant on the individuals learning style and needs. Therefore the only word I could use is flexible.

Teaching Experience:

I have been volunteering at Young Carers helping with homework and extra tuition for the previous year. I also work privately helping those of all ages and abilities, including adult learners as well as children of a very young age. Over the years I have acquired a lot of tricks and techniques to make arithmetic easier to learn.

Although I claim to help up to an Advanced Higher Maths standard, I have the ability and experience to help those at university struggling with foundation maths courses.

Tutoring Approach:

Personal Description:
I am an Oxford graduate and current law student who is passionate about helping students of all ages master their studies and gain the confidence to succeed.

My background is a bit untraditional (I've done two BAs- one in the US and one in the UK), but between my two undergraduate degrees, I have been lucky enough to get the depth and focus of a British BA as well as the flexibility of an American BA. As a result of my background, I have a strong understanding of many subjects and the ability to adapt my thinking and teaching to different disciplines from the creative to the analytical.

I have a 2.i from my BA in Philosophy and Theology from Oxford, a First from my BA in Humanities with Pre-Med courses (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Calculus) at Providence College in the United States, and an IB Diploma. I completed my Graduate Diploma in Law last year and am currently in my final year of legal studies at BPP University.

In my spare time, I like to work on crossword puzzles (I even competed in a tournament last year) and a few other somewhat nerdy indulgences like board games, video games and, of course, Star Wars. I always make time for learning something new where I can, and, having recently worked out the ukulele, I am currently working (slowly) on picking up Japanese.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience tutoring different ages of students in various disciplines, from helping undergraduates improve their essay-writing skills and preparing Oxbridge applicants for interview to assisting primary-school and SEN students with reading, writing and maths. I love helping students build confidence and master topics they once thought too challenging.

One of my favourite subjects to tutor is English and writing. During my first BA, I worked as a writing tutor at my university's tutoring centre, where I helped students analyse literature, brainstorm essay topics, construct thesis statements and outlines, and revise essay drafts for clarity and grammar. Over the past year, I've helped not only GCSE and A-level students but also primary-school SEN students improve their writing skills and confidence.

I am also very excited to tutor in Philosophy. Last year, I had the great pleasure of preparing one of my tutees for a Philosophy interview at Cambridge by discussing various topics and texts and working on essays together each week. We both enjoyed our sessions together greatly, and I was absolutely delighted when she was offered a place.

Finally, I have also worked as a teaching and lab assistant for my university's chemistry department and so am used to adapting my instruction for students with different aptitudes, interests and skillets. As a chemistry lab assistant, I worked alongside a lecturer to help university chemistry students in group hands-on chemistry lab lectures improve their lab techniques and see how each experiment fit in with the curriculum.

Tutoring Approach:

I think the best way to learn something challenging is to let students work through the problem at their own pace until they can see the solution for themselves and build the skills they'll need to succeed in the future on their own, so it's very important for me when I tutor to make sure that the student is in the driver's seat. I like to let the tutee's needs guide each session, so I begin each tutorial by asking the student what he or she wants to focus on and what he or she is struggling with. Whether it's reading through an essay or working through a maths problem, I like to help students break down a complicated problem and let them guide me through their thought processes, correcting and instructing where necessary and encouraging the student during their successes. Of course, there will always be complicated topics that require a more didactic style of tutoring, but I think the Socratic method is much more effective not only for ensuring students truly understand the material, but also for empowering them and giving them confidence in their work.

I believe an important goal for a tutor should be to help her tutee gain confidence, as many students only seek tutoring after having struggled to grasp a concept fully on their own and thus often tend to underestimate their ability in the subject. This is especially true for SEN students, who have often been misunderstood by their teachers and peers. A tutor shouldn't be just an instructor- she should be a coach and cheerleader, too! I honestly believe there is nothing more rewarding than watching my tutees grow in knowledge and confidence over the course of our sessions together.

I also believe that, where possible, it's important to add a dash of something interesting to tutorials, especially with younger students. I've found that when a tutee is losing interest or struggling to engage with the material (often because they're having trouble understanding it), finding new ways to approach the problem, either through games, real-life application or creative thought experiments, can help a student get reacquainted with a subject they might have dismissed as uninteresting.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Zuri and I am an American MA History student at King's College London. I specialize in study skills, writing, history (particularly intersections of race, class, and gender), and voice! I am very interested in teaching voice lessons and I will be able to help with basic music theory as well as vocal coaching as I am a jazz, musical theater, and classical singer. If you have ever wanted to sing, but feel you lack the confidence or technique to do so, I would be glad to help. I don't have a piano, but I'd be happy to meet at a practice room in London, or just use backing tracks on my laptop. As far as history, writing, and study skills, I would be more than happy to edit essays, show you how to improve your arguments, and teach you more about the methods of studying history. I can travel anywhere the tubes will take me, but I prefer zones 1 and 2. We could easily meet at a library, coffee shop, or bookstore. Also, I am available Monday after 12pm and every other day except for Tuesdays!

Teaching Experience:

English as a foreign Language for Roeland (Belgian summer camps)-advanced English
Math and English tutor in Boston (Prospect Hill Academy)-preparation for standardized exams
Engineering and math instructor for Girl Scout Camps
Singing lessons for students and Tufts University

Tutoring Approach:

I will first assess what you need to learn, what your skill set is at the moment, and how long we have to work together. Then I will develop a plan with very tangible end goals and milestones along the way. If you only need one session, of course we shall expedite this process. Everything will be catered to your needs!

Personal Description:
I`m a Spanish national who has been living in England for 10 years. In that time I have shared my passion for Spanish language and culture with many students of various ages and levels of ability, from small children to adult learners. I have a degree in English Studies, specialising in Spanish language for foreigners. In addition I have completed a number of courses and training related to teaching languages.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught at Bhasvic College, Brighton University, Sussex Downs College, private tuitions and after school classes, amongst others and have more than 15 years of teaching experience. I`m also specialized in tutoring classes for GCSE, A level, AB students or other exam related class. With these classes students not only gained the ability to improve their knowledge in the target language, but also got the confidence to communicate in Spanish, something some of them lacked. I also guide them and give them advice in their essays as a normal tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

Enthusiasm and professional attitude ensures that your learning experience will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

Personal Description:
2008 National Teaching Award Winner (Southern Region.)
Volunteer linesman every Sunday - for my 3 sons' football teams.
Keen cyclist - I've cycled further than the distance around the equator as I commuted to and from school.
Animal lover - I enjoy jogging with Scout, my rescue dog.
Educational author - I wrote a maths assessment book that was sold in WHSmith.
Piano player - I accompany a large choir that performs in both the Guildhall and the Cathedral in Portsmouth.
Prioritiser - In 2010 I decided to reduce my hours so that I could spend more time with my wife!

Teaching Experience:

I have been a classroom teacher for 23 years in 3 different schools; I was head hunted for the last job and when I left it in November 2016, it was graded outstanding by OFSTED. I have predominantly worked in year 6 where I have helped to raise standards of attainment - I have been successful in accelerating progress for many pupils (particularly in maths) to double Government expectations.

I have spent most of my career as a maths manager in schools but I have also led English and science. I have been a key stage leader for over 10 years and have mentored trainee teachers who have gone on to have their own successful teaching careers.
Winning the 2008 Award for Best Primary School Teacher in the South was an amazing experience. The judges interviewed pupils, staff and parents - families who weren't able to attend the meeting were able to submit letters of support and the highlight of the whole process was getting to read these testimonials afterwards.

Tutoring Approach:

Every pupil is different: each pupil has their own particular knowledge of facts, procedures and concepts, but they are also unique in their attitude, experience, confidence and motivation. Finding a tutoring approach that best suits each child is very important and, where appropriate, I make use of the recent educational principles of 'Growth Mindset' which challenge the notion that some people are just born clever, and encourages pupils to value risk taking, criticism and effort.

Individual tuition allows time so rarely afforded in whole class lessons to track back and identify the misconceptions that can sometimes be the underlying cause of slow progress or issues with confidence. The focus of good teaching is about building all new learning onto secure foundations and making strong and varied connections between concepts.
