Tutoring Approach:

Professional and friendly approach, looking for real, measurable progress and increased confidence for the learner
Most young learners need a tutor who understands the requirements of the GCSE / AS / A Level exams and can train students in tasks that will prepare them for these

Personal Description:
I am a professionally trained actor. I have written for numerous publications, with stories and poems published regularly. I am confident with public speaking, since I have been performing in diverse venues for nearly 10 years. I have an MA in Acting and an MA in Theatre & Performance Studies. I have professional training in elocution, pronunciation as well as accent and dialect work.

I am a keen footballer, and believe in the importance of keeping fit and eating healthily. I also love travel, gardening, fixing computers and watching and critiquing films and theatre.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private Tutor since 2007, and am a member of a number of private tutoring companies. I have tutored in English Language, English Literature, Speech, Drama, Acting, Philosophy, Entrance Exams, and most primary subjects. I have tutored Students from all ages and abilities; including adults and teenagers, as well as younger pupils, and pupils with learning difficulties

From Aug 2009 to May 2010 I was a Learning Support Assistant, DeBeauvoir School, Hackney, London.

Main duties included ensuring that students with learning difficulties are both kept up to speed with the general classroom environment, and that this does not disrupt the other students.

Other duties include:
- To provide full time academic and pastoral support to individual learners with learning difficulties, and/or behavioural and social problems.
- To provide academic and pastoral support to all other learners when required.
- To encourage learners to pursue further academic or vocational education.
- To provide behavioural support in class and to teaching staff at all times.

July 2009 - August 2009 I was SEN Assistant at Kentish Town CE School, London

Main duties include ensuring that students with physical and/or cognitive complications are given the extra support they require within the general classroom environment, and that this does not disrupt the other students.

Jan 2009 - June 2009 I was a Cover Supervisor, Neat Education & Select Education, Sheffield

Responsibilities are that of a Supply Teacher, being responsible for the learning and conduct of a whole class of students. Maintaining discipline and focus as well as being at all times a strong leader and role model were essential at all times.

Other duties include:
- Academic and pastoral support to all other learners when required.
- Monitoring attendance of learners and set appropriate targets.
- Invigilating examinations and mark work.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that Tutoring is first about personal connection. Any learning can only be achieved given a certain level of trust, which must be established in order to create a solid platform from which further learning can then flourish. Younger students are most open to absorbing information and should have the chance to take academic information and guidance from a range of people. This enhances the educational experiences and broadens the horizons of a student.

Having myself struggled with poor teachers, or unwieldy subject matter, I know that, with the right teachers, such areas can come alive. More clinical approaches to tutoring further separate students from the learning process. Having experienced one-to-one tuition myself, I have seen the many positives and potential pitfalls the system can bring. These experiences galvanize me and help me in my own tutoring. I relish taking what I have learnt, and the exciting methods by which I have learnt it, and passing that on to other students.

Regardless of the level taught, it is impossible to make real progress unless the student first has engagement and interest in the subject. I see my task as tutor as a process of invigorating the material for those studying.

About Me

I grew up in South Wales as part of a large musical family.

I started playing piano and studying singing at the age
of 8, where I first studied Piano with Joyce Powell and the very talented Rowena Oakey, and 's Newport. I am also a skilled marching band percussionist,
having played all the instruments in this family.

From Head Chorister at St. John's Church, Maindee, and Bandmaster of the Borough of Newport Pipes & Drums, I conducted the Massed Male Choirs at the National Eisteddfod in Newport in 1987 at the age of only 21.

I am a former trombonist of the Band of the 3 BattalionRoyal Regiment of Wales, and former conductor of other male choirs including Newport (Gwent) and Snowdown (Kent).

I also studied singing at many RSCM courses. I have performed in a variety of venues including Bath Abbey, the Royal Albert Hall, Westminster Cathedral, Cardiff Castle, Dover Castle, Plymouth Hoe, the NEC and Wembley.

I really enjoy performing, conducting and teaching - all three skills I use to the pupil's advantage.

In 2001, I formed what is now the very successful Wessex Male Choir, whom have since won many competitions on the International stage, and which is still growing in size (now 60 choristers strong!), musical ability and popularity. See our website

In 2005, TV & Radio Presenter and singing star Aled Jones, became the choir's patron.

I have arranged lots of music for Male Choirs and some solely for Wessex.
I feel humble that my passion for choral music has enabled me to be entrusted not only with continuing the fine tradition of Male choirs, but preserving and developing it for generations to come.About Me

I look forward to hearing from you.

Personal Description:
I specialise in teaching French to adults who want to improve their speaking and listening skills in French, and also help you get to grips with the grammar you need to really understand and unlock the language.
I learned my French grammar at school, but I really learned how to communicate in French when I lived and worked in Lyon. I have also worked for a French humanitarian organisation, as a French wine buyer and have spoken French at home over the last 25 years. I am married to a Lyonnais and have lots friends and family living in France.
When I lived in France, I taught English as Foreign Language (EFL) to adults. Learning a second language as an adult is different from learning at school, the main thing is to keep it interesting, lively and relevant for you.

Teaching Experience:

Over the years, I have taught many adults like you who want to improve their language skills, including but not limited to:

- Tailored French tutorials on a one-to-one basis for complete beginners, people coming back to the French language after a long gap, and confident speakers who want to take their French to the next level
- Bespoke French language group lessons in small businesses where people come together to learn French for both their personal and professional development
- Adult evening classes at a secondary school for people wanting to learn French as a group course

I also host a weekly French club for people who want to practice speaking French and have organised several accompanied cultural day trips to France for groups of up to 20 people.

As an English as a Foreign Language Teacher (EFL) in Lyon, I have taught a second language to:
- Professionals at EDF, learning a second language to forward their career
- Air Traffic Controllers, St Exupery International Airport, Lyon
- People learning a language to achieve their their own personal goals

My work as a group facilitator and trainer includes:
- Creative problem solving workshops
- Strategy development, design and planning workshops
- Project management training

Tutoring Approach:

My job as your tutor comes with many hats. I'm there to guide you through your learning, motivate you to keep moving towards your goals, make it easy for you to understand, put you at ease so you can practice, make mistakes and feel the confidence to correct yourself. These are just some of the things that you need when you are learning a language.

You will learn faster if you are open to exploring the language, prepared to take a few risks when speaking and are willing to engage with lots of different learning strategies that keep things interesting and challenging.

Let's face it we have all proved that we have the skills for learning languages, just by the fact we speak our own language. My approach to teaching you French is to tease out all the strategies and techniques that you already have for language learning and help you apply them to learning French.

It's a fascinating journey, I think, with many benefits that go way beyond being able to conjugate verbs correctly, although of course grammar is important.

Please do get in touch if you would like to find out more.

Personal Description:
Having grown up in an Anglo Italian family in both England and Italy, I am totally bilingual and I have a passion for language teaching in all its aspects.

Teaching Experience:

II have taught both English and Italian language for many years and in all kinds of situations.

- I have taught all ages: from children to senior citizens.

- all levels, from elementary to advanced

- from individuals to university courses of over 100 students

- in a variety of professional contexts for companies

- in my home and in cafes to create an authentic environments.

I love seeing my clients make progress.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in putting students at ease and fostering a positive emotional environment within which the students can learn by doing. Believing there is no greater incentive than success I always adopt a positive approach to teaching.

Although grammar is fundamental to any language, I prefer to teach students collocations (groups of words that commonly go together) than dry grammar rules. I leads to people speaking more instinctively and spending less time worrying about the correctness of what they are saying.

Building confidence in the learner and helping them realise that they can transfer natural communication skills from their first language to their second language is key to their success.

Personal Description:
My name is Ed. I graduated from Durham University with 1st class honours in Maths and Physics. I have achieved straight A result with six A-levels including Maths, Further Maths, German, Physics, Chemistry and Chinese. I am an experienced tutor and have previously tutored students from a variety of schools and institutions. I am patient and my primary focus is to help you achieve your goals and objectives.

I currently work in the finance industry. I also work as a private tutor for a top tutoring company in central London. I am flexible and can travel to you.

I am available on the weekends as well as weekday evenings.

Please contact me for further enquiries. I can provide you references if required.

Teaching Experience:

Private Tutor at Bonas Macfarlane, London, July 2010 - Present
I tutor a variety of subjects at different levels from primary schools to A-levels. I teach Maths, Physics, Chemistry, German and Chinese. I also offer service on giving academic advice as well as interview techniques for entering into top schools and universities in the UK.

Private Tutor at Bright Young Things, London, September 2012 - Present
Bright Young Things is the second largest tutoring agency after Bonas Macfarlane whom I also work for. With Bright Young Things my focus had been Maths at A-level and GCSE.

University Marker, Department of Mathematics, Durham University, October 2009 - May 2010
I mentored second year Maths undergraduates at Durham University. I have learned to work through the arguments and thought processes of others and give constructive feedback.

Sixth Form Tutor, Framwellgate Sixth Form College, Durham, October 2006 - June 2009
I tutored Maths (GCSE, A-Level), Chemistry (GCSE, A-level), German (GCSE, A-Level) and Chinese (GCSE, A-Level) at Durham Framwellgate Sixth Form College for three years. I helped all of my tutees achieve more than what they were initially targeting to achieve. I also learned to prepare teaching materials and adopt various teaching methods.

Teaching Assistant, Student Associate Scheme, Middlesbrough, June to July 2008
Co-operated between the Training and Developing Agency (TDA) and the target schools in the Northeast, I worked alongside experienced teachers to gain classroom teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is simple and effective. The general framework is as follows.

As for Maths and science related subjects, at the outset I will go through general concepts that are fundamental to student's understanding on the subject through the use of simple examples. I will then reinforce the message and encourage students through taking the initiative on specific and more challenging problems. Confidence is key and it is vital that my tutees are motivated and encouraged to constantly self-develop both at an academic and personal level.

As for German and Chinese, I strive to make the lesson as interactive as I can. I am experienced in teaching beginners as well as students that have learnt the language for a number of years.

I understand the different learning needs of different students. I will always be flexible and will do my best to help you succeed.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic native speaker Italian teacher qualified at the Italian Cultural Institute of London with a TIAFL (Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language) certificate. Furthermore, I have attained a Master's degree (Distinction) in Italian Literature at University of Bologna gaining an excellent command of the Italian language and a deep insight into the culture.

Teaching Experience:

During the intensive teacher training course TIAFL 'Teaching Italian as a Foreign language' at the Italian Cultural Institute in London I have taught to students of different levels including complete beginners and intermediate, planning innovative lessons and creating activities with authentic material.
I am currently working with one-to-one tuitions with a more tailored approach adapted to the student's needs and expectations.

Tutoring Approach:

I love involving students into the 'Italian world': natural and artistic heritage, social customs and peculiarities.
In my professional experience as a teacher I have developed a communicative approach able to show short-term improvements in the students' speaking ability and competence.
My lessons are student-centred enabling the tutee to effectively practise the language in an active way.
The interest is stimulated through innovative and engaging activities such as games adapted to language learning as well as audio, video and visual material.
The grammar is instructed through an inductive approach to make the student able to understand the concept within a specific context, and pronunciation is facilitated with a focus on individual phonemes, stress and intonation.
This active and engaging approach is the perfect way to stimulate the students' interest and motivation in learning a new language.

Personal Description:
I am a successful local tutor and teacher with an MA in Education from Oxford Brookes University (2016), a Postgraduate Diploma in English and Language in Education from the University of Reading (2012). I also have a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Secondary - English) from Oxford Brookes University (2007) and a BA Hons in English Literature (2006). I am passionate about my subject and enthusiastic about improving both my pedagogical and subject knowledge. With A Level clients, I often re-read the key exam texts and exam specifications in order to deliver a successful tutorial. For GCSE, I am confident with multiple exam boards but, again, I take a sincere interest in changes to qualifications and specifications. I have recently led a team of ten teachers in our delivery of the GCSE English qualification through WJEC. Part of my role included observing good teaching practice and documenting this for staff appraisals.

Teaching Experience:

I have nine years experience of working in the state secondary sector as a Qualified English Teacher; teaching anything from Key Stage 3 (11 years - 14 years) up to Key Stage 5 (A Level) including GCSE. I currently teach GCSE and iGCSE English at a popular FE college for adults, returning to education, and for full-time learners aged 16+. In addition, I have previously worked as a Learning Support Assistant, at a Catholic primary school in Reading. I have also taught American children how to use movie editing packages, such as iMovie, in Maine, USA.

Tutoring Approach:

The rapport with the parent is as just as important as the tutee. In order to make a success of the tuition, it's paramount to have a good professional relationship with both. I use feedback from the tutee's parent (via a school report) and informal feedback from the tutee to create an Individual Tuition Plan which includes setting three clear targets. Depending on the key stage and ability of the tutee, this can range anything from parenthetic comma use to translating Chaucerian poetry!

Personal Description:
Enthusiastic with a restless intelligence, thirsty for knowledge, always keen to discover more, I am continually fascinated by the interplay between culture and society. I have expert knowledge in English and American Literature, the history of cinema, and the development of western philosophy. I resigned from my post as head of department at a large comprehensive school so that I would have more time to write my book comparing the films of Preminger and Hitchcock. Freed from the administrative demands of a school, I have even more energy and creativity to devote to teaching, and will have a powerfully positive impact on whoever I tutor.

Teaching Experience:

I have over thirty years' experience in a wide variety of educational contexts: at universities in Britain and abroad, in comprehensive schools, FE colleges, language schools and professional training. I have worked as a A Level examiner and moderator for over ten years, so understand exactly what students need to do to impress markers, and can advise on how to avoid mediocrity. I have been tutoring online for two years, and find that the level of concentration in a Skype session is usually higher than in person: the start is crisper, the learning more focused.

Tutoring Approach:

Fun, exciting, inspiring. I love the stimulating variety of one-to-one tuition. Over the years, I have adapted my plans, materials and methods to meet the specific needs, aims and expectations of an extremely wide variety of learners in terms of ability, personality and specialisation. At one end of the scale, I trained Swedish officers in media relations ahead of their deployment with the UN in Bosna, and spent eight weeks one-to-one with the head of personnel of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, improving his presentation skills. At the other end of the scale, I had notable success tutoring a teenager with emotional and behavioural difficulties who had been permanently excluded from school for violence, and was in local authority care. Working with him individually for three hours a day, concentrating on English, Maths and History, I had a very positive and potentially transformative impact. At every point in scale, I treat individuals with respect and dedication, determined to help them achieve their potential.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed my PhD at the University of Dundee.

I enjoy reading various philosophy from Ancient Greek to modern postmodernism.

Teaching Experience:

I am a current tutor for the philosophy department at the University of Dundee. I also teach the philosophy summer course for the university.

I have been a tutor for 5 years and teaching the summer course for 2 years.

I also previously taught an adult course for the University of Dundee based on a causal reading of the philosophy of Plato.

Tutoring Approach:

Philosophy is a difficult subject to understand with technical concepts and explanations. My teaching approach simplifies these concepts and explanations by relating them to everyday examples. Also where appropriate they are also related to film and tv examples. This approach then aims to clarify and help the student's understanding but also make the learning process fun and engaging.

Philosophy is also a subject that encourages critical thinking. I encourage my students to be critical of the philosophers and ideas that are being discussed. Their criticisms then can illuminate a deep problem in the philosophy or be comparable to another philosopher's objection.

Resolution of any problems or issues that arise whilst addressing a philosopher is also key. This is because no problem is trivial and helps to clarify the student's understanding and also make the text easier to understand. Any problem will be addressed such as difficultly in understanding an area in the text, concept, or in understanding another philosopher's criticism.

Homework will be given that covers the discussion. Typically these questions will be for the student to give an explanation of concept and how this can be practically applied.

Overall my teaching approach is:
*Simplification of Ideas
*Use of everyday, TV and film examples
*Resolution of student's problems
*Homework based on the discussion to clarify the student's understanding

Personal Description:
- I have successfully completed two years of a BSc Biomedical science degree at King's college London and have a love of biology and wider science I would love to share with younger generations.
- I am currently taking a year out to help care for my terminally ill father.
- Prior to this, I attended Hampton school from which I graduated with the A-levels maths, chemistry and biology (AAA) and the AS levels physics, geography and computing (AAA).
- Outside of education, I am a 21 year old with keen interests in fitness/nutrition, travelling and extensive reading.
- My primary academic interest lies within the realms of biology but my university degree has left me well versed in chemistry, biochemistry and maths as well.

While I do have my own car and am able to travel as necessary I also have a spacious, 2 desk home office that is an excellent learning environment.

Teaching Experience:

- Throughout my time at school and university I have always enjoyed mentoring, supporting and teaching both those in younger years and my peers who are struggling to grasp a concept.
- I also provided my sister with support in sciences and maths throughout her studies as she was more artistically minded and focused.
- I also spent 6 months volunteering with children who had severe downs syndrome aimed at engaging them in activities to develop their social, cognitive and verbal skills. This was an invaluable experience that saw my patience and empathy grow immeasurably.

Tutoring Approach:

1 - Flexible: Not everyone has the same ability, needs or approach to learning and so I feel it is imperative that tutoring is tailored specifically to what each child wants and needs.
2 - Thorough: I feel that often problems within subjects can run deep to the fundamentals principals on which it is based. It is important that each child has a good understanding of these as they provide them with the ability to apply them and learn independently.
3 - Patient: Feeling like you are struggling and not doing as well as you might want is an extremely demoralizing and difficult thing for a child to cope with. As someone who has experienced it myself I feel I am able to help guide them back on track through my ability to empathize, develop a relationship and slowly help rebuild confidence and motivation.

Personal Description:
My name is Naomi, I am a recent graduate from the University of a central Lancashire. I graduated with a 2:2 in Children Schools and Families. I have relevant and recent experience with children and young people. I have volunteered in a number of schools as a teaching assistant am up to date with the national curriculum. I am a good listener so can listen to and understand each child's learning style. I can adapt what I know to help your child to achieve the best they possibly can. My aim is to give children confidence in the subjects they are unsure about. Once a child has the confidence they have the ability to reach any target set for them.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a teaching assistant in a number of schools bothe primary and high schools. I have also worked in a special needs school where I learnt a lot about the importance of communication.
As mentioned I have a recent and relevant understanding of the national curriculum so know the subjects and areas children need to strive in.
Although I am not a qualified teacher I am aware of different teaching styles and the importance of giving children confidence to learn.

Tutoring Approach:

1:1 work with children is often needed for children to gain confidence because in a classroom full of 20-30 children can sometimes be daunting and children sometimes lack confidence in asking questions. Therefore not fully understanding a subject. Which is why I feel it is important to guide children into their learning style and help them with topics they are studying in the classroom. They can then take their knowledge into the classroom and apply it to the relevant work.
