I have an MA in Classical Philology and Russian Studies from the University of St Petersburg and am qualified to teach Russian, French, English and Latin. Since graduating in 1978 I have worked extensively in language teaching and translation / interpreting. I have also worked in France for 3 years and attended an interpreting school in Paris (ISIT - Institut Superieur d' Interpretation et de Traduction). I also hold a Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI in Law) issued by the Chartered Institute of Linguists and am a member of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) and of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIL).

I have taught schoolchildren, students and adult learners at beginners, intermediate and advanced level. I have lived in Britain since 1991 and am available for tutoring in Cambridge, Huntingdon and in the surrounding areas.

I also provide English language tutoring for Russian, French and German speakers. As a translator / interpreter I specialise in Medical / Pharmaceutical and Legal translation and interpreting for private companies and public service organisations like the National Probation Service, the Police, the Courts and the NHS.

Tutoring Approach:

I do my best to give the student a good grounding in grammar which is a key to understanding and fluency whatever the language. I encourage students to listen to radio programmes in the target language, watch newsreports on television etc as it is a great learning tool. I feel passionate about languages myself and find teaching highly enjoyable.

Tutoring Approach:

As a personal tutor I help learners to unlock their full potential. The environment of a large classroom often hinders results and limits development. I find that different approaches and environments improve results and increase enthusiasm to learn and the ability to work independently.
I aim to tailor tuition for the individual learner. At the intial session we agree a plan of action based on the learner's needs. We continue to review this plan as needs change. The tuition is intended to support study at school or college or individual study (eg distance learning courses). Sessions are informal but focussed and enjoyable. I set homework if required but prefer to concentrate on understanding and practice within the session.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching seconday school students since qualifying in 1998. I have had two full-time posts, worked as a supply teacher as well as having private students. I have worked in Inner London, Outer London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire schools. I have also worked in France at a small private school during the '80's, predominantly teaching adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach French using the native tongue as much as possible. I use my own resources although I use the Internet for ideas whenever it's suitable.
For Maths I follow the syllabus laid down by whichever examining board the student is using and resources come from a wide variety of places usually from where I have recently been teaching. I gather information from colleagues who sometimes have great ideas. I like to be able to go through past papers with students marking work as we go through a course.

I was born in mainland China where we speak standard Mandarin, after graduated from university I moved to Shenzhen, the first city applied Open Policy in China. During 6 years living and working there, I learnt very fluent Cantonese.

At the end of 1999, I came to UK in pursuing further education. I achieved my MBA degree and Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language in UK. During the break between these two studies, I also gained Interpreting certificate which enables me to do the interpreting jobs between English and Chinese language.

Maybe I have a little bit gift in learning language myself? My English pronunciation is rather good so that some of my English friends even said it can hardly tell I am not English from talking with me through the phone.

Hopefully I've reassured you that there is no barrier in me communicating with your child if you are worried that, as a Mandarin native speaker, I might have strange accent in English speaking.

I firmly believe that, language learning, is not just about to learn the language itself, but also the culture. The better perception of culture will certainly enhance the language learning. Therefore, I will integrate rich Chinese culture into my teaching, of course in various passionate ways to make the class full of the fun!

I graduated from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with a first class honours degree in composition and attained my MA in musicology with Distinction from the University of Bristol.

I have been teaching Latin in primary schools for two years as part of the 'Iris Project' which is designed to improve children's literacy through Latin. I have also been involved with a project called 'Ancient Languages in the Park' which teaches a variety of languages in open surroundings. Both these teaching experiences offer unique insights into teaching.

For my undergraduate degree I majored in Latin. As part of that degree I took a module specifically designed for Latin teachers. I have studied a variety of different teaching methods and I am passionate about finding the correct teaching approach for each individual student.

Tutoring Approach:

OFFERED APPROACHES

Each student learns differently and as such I offer a selection of approaches so that each student can get the most from their learning experience. Students can either decide how they want to learn or, through a free consultation, let me offer a suggestion depending on their goals and learning type.

Direct Approach

The direct approach is a grammar heavy approach which was commonly used until around 40 years ago when it fell out of fashion. This approach is once again making a comeback, especially since many native English speakers no longer know correct grammar.

In this approach you learn Latin through its grammar system whilst learning a great deal of English along the way. This method can be excellent for anyone who is still engaged in any form of study as it is certain to improve essay writing, verbal communication and article reading speeds.

The Reading Approach

This approach introduces students directly to a piece of text (primarily adapted) and allows them to begin translating right away. Grammar takes a back seat and is learned as it becomes necessary. Students of the reading method typically learn the language more slowly but are introduced to a wider array of literature and classical culture.

An MFL Approach

The 'Modern Foreign Language' approach is very popular at the moment especially when teaching children. It approaches Latin through puzzles, games, worksheets, texts and even songs. This approach to Latin teaching is incredibly new and I am pleased to be involve with the research aspect of it for 'Swansea University'.

This is a perfect approach for anyone, adult or child, that wants to Latin in a fun and intuitive way. You will not find this method being taught anywhere else online for adults.

Which Approach?

Each student is given a free, thirty minute lesson in which we can look at examples from the three different approaches and decide on the correct one for that student.

I am a Taiwanese who base in Edinburgh. Before I moved back to Scotland in 2014, I was a doctoral student at the University of Chicago in Greek and Latin. I have a BA degree in history from National Taiwan University (2006). After I spent a year studying Greek and Latin at Trinity College Dublin (2005-6), I gained a post-baccalaureate certificate in Greek and Latin from Columbia University in the City of New York (2008) and then a MPhil in Latin from the University of St. Andrews in 2011. Afterwards, I spent three years pursuing PhD research on Greek and Latin at the University of Chicago. At the present, I am photographing Edinburgh and Dublin and preparing my portfolio, exhibition, and photo books. I am very much enthusiastic about finding knowledge in both textual and visual worlds. Moreover, I am writing stories about Taiwanese diaspora for a journal in Taiwan. I have TAed and taught Latin in Taiwan and the States. During this period, I have helped Cambridge University Press to translate Cambridge Latin Course series into Chinese Mandarin. During my stay in Chicago (2011-13), I also helped young people who have learning and reading difficulty.

Tutoring Approach:

Latin:
Apart from solving the problems of your school work, we will do more exercise, such as unseen translation and English-Latin translation, to find out your weak and strong points. The exercise will help me prepare materials that will help you memorise syntax, vocabulary, and grammar. Grammar can be very boring and put down students' interest in Latin. However, learning through reading interesting, alien, and exotic stories will enhance students' motivation to look into the Roman Antiquity. Reading will also more effectively shed lights on the parts of grammar and syntax we need to make up. Moreover, I will show you how to master speech recognition tactics in order to develop a stronger reading comprehension. I believe in the end of this course, we will have a better understand of Latin as a language and Latin literature as a whole.




English
I have been learning English since I was fifteen. I have overcome many difficulties, such as taking language exams, living in foreign lands, and doing academic works. I will share those experience with you. This tutoring will focus on the various needs and interests of individual students. You may bring the materials that interest you. We also can look into big books, newspapers or stories covering your the stories of your country. We can also look into websites which offer wonderful resources for people whose first language is not English, such as BBC. By reading, listening and discussing together, I will help you find out your weak points and we will start from there.

Hi, my name is Lauren and I am 23 years old. I am currently undertaking my clinical training as a third year medical student via the Graduate Entry Programme at Imperial College London. Prior to this I read Natural Sciences at University of Cambridge with an interest in a range of biological topics including biology of cells, physiology, pathology and history & ethics of medicine.

I have always been a hardworking and conscientious student but more importantly I have made an effort to adapt and improve my approach to learning to meet the increasing demands that school and university brings. I would love to use my experiences to help other students work towards and achieve their goals, and pass on the studying skills I have found so helpful.

During my time at Cambridge I found the small-group-based supervisions to be the best way to test my own understanding of a topic and a great opportunity to seek answers to questions that had not been raised during class. This is why I believe tutoring is one of the most effective ways for a student to enhance their own education. Furthermore having been a supervisee myself I understand the qualities that are sought in a tutor. The supervisors I most admired were those that were approachable, patient and knowledgeable; qualities I strive to embody in my own tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have many years of experience providing guidance, support and advice to students over a wide age range both in academic and extra-curricular settings.

During sixth form I was a senior student for the mathematics department tutoring students in year 7-9 at lunchtimes, in particular guiding them through assignments they had been unable to complete in class and taking the time to revisit topics they had found more challenging. I was also elected to be a prefect responsible for overseeing the welfare of a year 9 form throughout the academic year.

Whilst at Cambridge I took part in an e-monitoring scheme where I provided advice and guidance to a sixth form student applying to university from an access-targeted school. I also became a 'college parent' to three students in the year below whom I provided support to in their studies and general advice about university life.

More recently at Imperial I have volunteered with the 'Teddy Bear Hospital Scheme' helping to run interactive and fun workshops at local primary schools to educate children about the importance of health and challenge their fear of doctors. I also continue to help my five younger siblings with their homework and exam preparation, feeling a great sense of pride as I have watched each of them progress from primary to secondary school.

I am very excited to tutor students in the areas of mathematics and science, as well as help with university applications and entrance exams (UKCAT average = 790).

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the best approach to tutoring is to work in partnership with the tutee in an environment that we both feel comfortable, ensuring an interactive and engaging session.

The teaching methods used will be adapted to every tutee, catering to the individual differences in learning approaches and pace. These could range from working through practice questions to test a tutee's knowledge, using diagrams to explain difficult concepts, to having an open and two-way discussion about a topic of interest. I would explore these specifics prior to and during the first session so that I could appreciate the needs of the tutee. In later sessions we can review the approach used and make changes if both the tutee and I feel this would be beneficial.

Whether a tutee is looking to understand the basics of topic they are struggling with or wanting to push themselves to excel in areas they are interested in I believe everyone can reach their potential and that is what I set out to do through my tutoring.

My name is Gur, I'm a theatre and performance maker and a Hebrew tutor residing in London since July 2014.
I was born in Israel in 1986. I grew up in the outskirts of Tel- Aviv and lived in Tel-Aviv most of my adulthood. I attended the prestigious arts school Thelma Yellin followed by the Yoram Lowenstein acting Studio where I graduated in 2009. I completed a Master's degree in Performance at Goldsmiths University of London in 2016. Since 2015 I have been teaching Hebrew in London, there are great results and moreover Hebrew tutoring provides me with a connection to my roots. In my productions I put an emphasis on the actor or performer and I am experienced in achieving a result that will satisfy me and my actor.

I have two main passions: my passion for teaching and my keen interest in Classics. I am currently at the final stage of a joint PhD program in History of Ancient Philosophy between KU Leuven (University of Leuven) and the University of Milan. At both universities, I have had the opportunity to teach Latin Language and Ancient Philosophy. My history made me knowledgeable about Classical Languages and Civilization and an enthusiastic communicator of it to students of different ages.
I attended the 'Liceo Classico', which provides a specific high-school program that strongly focuses on Greek and Latin Languages, Literatures, and Culture, and, more generally, on Humanities. There, I studied the whole history of Greek and Latin literature and I learned to deal with Classical authors in original and to translate even difficult texts.
The desire to deepen into my knowledge of Classical languages and to become a teacher led me to further pursue Classical studies at university. I attended the University of Milan, which is one of the most important universities in Italy and has the biggest Department of Classics. There I developed a solid knowledge in Classical Languages, Literature, Philosophy, and Art. There, I read in original and translated a great amount of texts of the Classical tradition, and learned the methodology for philological research. I gained both my BA's and MA's degrees in Classics scoring 110/110 summa cum laude both times. For my MA thesis, I applied as a Visiting Scholar to the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) where I could perform my research in an eminent Classics Department, taking, amongst others, Professor Martin Bloomer's class on Latin authors.

Teaching Experience:

Alongside my academic career, I continued to pursue my passion for teaching, tutoring high-school and middle-school students in Greek and Latin and in Italian Grammar. Those experiences strengthened my teaching skills and the satisfaction they gave me kept encouraging me in pursuing a teaching career. More specifically, I started to deal with students of different ages and to learn different methodologies of teaching, always in dialogue with older professional teachers. At KU Leuven, I had the chance to teach a seminar on the History of Philosophy for BA Students in the English program. This experience was very challenging and fruitful for deepening my teaching and linguistic skills.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim is not only to provide tutees with knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages and the classical world, but also, and primarily, to support the development of a curious, open and critical mentality, through an actual experience of encounter with the great authors of our tradition. Hello! I am an undergraudate student at the University of St Andrews reading Modern History and Psychology. I'm Italian but speak English fluently as I attended an International high school. Learning languages is very important in my family: my father speaks 7 languages fluently, so there was also competition between my sister to see who could learn the most! I speak English and Italian fluently, as well as Spanish. I'm quite confident in speaking French too (although I may be slightly out of practice!). I'm currently learning Arabic and Russian with the University. I took Biology for A-Level, as well as Histroy, Spanish and French.

Teaching Experience:

While at school, I founded a Student Tutoring system, where A-Level students would spend an hour after school tutoring GCSE students in specific subjects. This was very successful; the GCSE students who attended our weekly tutoring sessions achieved (on average) GCSEs two grades higher than their predicted grades.

Tutoring Approach:

During my first lesson with any new tutee, I will test them to identify the way in which they learn best.
Many students believe that the only way to learn a subject is to read and reread their textbooks. While this technique may work for some, it's completely ineffective for most.
For example, I realised that the best way I learn is by teaching the material to someone else who has no knowledge of the subject. Others may find that mindmaps and flash cards help them best, while others still find watching YouTube videos to work.
Each student is completely unique in the way they learn, and my teaching style will reflect that. I keep notes on each tutee, in order to identify any patterns in their learning. This will help me structure each session so that the student gets the most out of it.
