Tutoring Approach:

I believe that a combination of listening and individualized response/approach is what makes my tutoring very effective. I feel that students need a warm and supportive environment in their tutoring sessions, especially because it can be very frusterating when you have to spend extra time on a difficult subject. However, tutoring doesn't have to be tedious, it can be efficient and even fun!

Personal Description:
I am currently working after graduating from university with a degree in Chemistry.

Teaching Experience:

Over the years I have helped my younger sister, my cousin and their friends with their Science, Maths and French GCSE work and revision. Whilst at University we also had to help mentor younger students and help them with their Chemistry work.

Tutoring Approach:

When I was studying for my science and maths exams, I also had tutors, so I have experience in what is required of a tutor. I know that often a friendly, unpatronising and supportive way of explaining something, in a slightly different way, can make all the difference in understanding and being confident with a topic. As such, my approach is to be directed by the student and the areas that they want to concentrate on and help them gain more confidence and knowledge in.

Personal Description:
I am a professional drummer/percussionist who has been teaching and performing in the UK, Europe, and America for the last twenty years. My musical experience is in styles that range from Jazz, Pop, Rock, African, Reggae, Experimental, Ethnic, Hip Hop, Funk and others. I play and teach both drum kit and African hand and stick drums. Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching methods are molded to the individual. The constants for all students are basic skills such as rudiments, strength building, coordination, time keeping, listening, independence and posture. Beyond that I always begin with students by discussing what they want from their drumming. What music they like, what music they would like to play, and how great their ambition may be. I then proceed to tailor lessons to their needs. With children I keep the same approach but emphasise the need to explore a wide range of styles to ensure a good grounding and musical flexibility.

Personal Description:
I have attained a Master degree in Cardiff University. And now I am looking for opportunities to tutor in Mandarin (Chinese) in London area.

Languages: Fluent in both written and spoken Mandarin, English and Shanghainese. (I have native knowledge of Shanghai as I was born in Shanghai.)
Achieve IELTS overall 6.5 with 7.5 in reading module.

Music: Play piano (Level 8) and accordion (Level 3).

Teaching Experience:

I had experience in tutoring a Korean Garment Manager (over 50 years old) for 3 years before I came to UK. As he opens a new branch in Shanghai, he asks me to teach him Mandarin from the Beginning stage. Actually, he really likes my teaching method & style. Also my business background from the college provides him with relevant information. Now he has a good command of Mandarin - his listening and speaking ability have been largely improved.

In addition, I once gave one-to-one private tuition to a 7-year-old girl when she just entered the elementary school. I taught her Chinese, Maths, English and Piano. She regarded me as her elder sister and liked to study with me. Her parents were very satisfied with my work during that time.

Tutoring Approach:

Student-oriented. (Text book, PowerPoint, audio material and online resources.)

I prefer One-to-One teaching method as I can focus on the student's target and see much improved results. Let student think, provide them confidence to open their mouth to speak new languages. Culture part is important, so does practical skills.

Personal Description:
I studied English to degree level, obtaining a 2:i in 2008 from Brunel University. I am passionate about English as a subject and would like to share that with any tutees. I am a bubbly 24 year old who is able to engage with children of all levels which is helpful when tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently working as a Cover Supervisor at a school in Richmond prior to starting my teacher training in September 2010. Working at a school as a Cover Supervisor has given me experience of assisting students when they need, and working 1:1 with students in the Special Needs department. It has also given me knowledge and understanding of the current curriculum and how pupils are expected to progress. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant in a Secondary School in Cape Town in 2004-2005.

I am currently tutoring both a Year 2 boy for 2 hours per week, focussing on expression and explanation - keeping learning fun and imaginative to develop reading and writing skills. I am also tutoring a Year 4 boy for an hour a week helping him with sentence structure and writing skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very patient person who likes to keep learning fun and interesting - I want to share my passion for English! Rather than tutoring sessions feeling like an extension of school work, I want my tutees to enjoy a more approachable way to learn skills in literacy in order to progress effectively with their school work.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying a Masters in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex, a course I have been working towards for almost a decade. Since graduating I have worked in and around education both in the UK and abroad. I enjoy working with people of all backgrounds, ages and cultures and learning from them. I would consider myself to be hard-working, overly-enthusiastic and friendly.

Teaching Experience:

I have a CELTA (Cambridge English Language Teaching Award) and over 2 years TEFL experience. Initially, I volunteered teaching English at the Refugee Council in London. I then worked abroad, in Bolivia, where I home tutored several students in French and English.

While in Bolivia I volunteered with a local educational NGO, Charity Bolivia, and became their English teacher. I helped children to complete their homework on a daily basis and learnt how to work with young children. During my time in Bolivia I learnt to speak Spanish.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a learner-centred approach, always eager for the first session to be an opportunity for the student and tutor to get to know one another and what they hope to gain from the tutoring. According to each individual student I work to tailor the timetable and each lesson to fit them. Being aware of different learning styles I try to adapt to the student's particular style and interests as much as is possible. I also try to make every lesson fun through a creative and varied use of materials.

Personal Description:
Hello,
I am currently a second year Film and Media student at MMU. I was born in the Netherlands from Polish parents and lived there for 17 years. At home we spoke Polish and on Saturday's I attended Polish school. After 17 years my family decided to move to Poland, and I finished my school there. Basically I was raised bilingual, so I know that it can be sometimes hard to try to let your child speak a different language at home than at school.
I'm have a rather open and easygoing personality, I'm young and still full of energy as well as patience. Although I do not have an teaching experience, I would definitely suitable for conversational tutorials.

Teaching Experience:

None, but one has top start somewhere.

Tutoring Approach:

Basically learning something should be fun, interesting, and not boring. One has to be patient and know how to level with the children yet still maintaining some respect. When I attended Saturday school I often had one- to -one sessions with my teacher. Thanks to that, I realise how important and intensive a tutoring session can be.

Personal Description:
I am a second year undergraduate studying physics at Imperial College London. Having taken GCSE and A Level examinations within the last five years I feel that I know precisely what is required of a student taking these exams. Being only 20, I feel that I can offer a different approach from older tutors, some students can feel more comfortable with someone of a similar age. If you have tried an older more experienced tutor and this has not worked then maybe I am the option for you.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching experience having gone straight from school to university. However, I have been helping a 13 year old preparing to take his common entrance exam in order to get into Westminster School. I have mainly been a help with maths but he has found me useful in preparing for his science exams too. He preferred me helping him to his at the time paid tutor who was a retired teacher as he felt I was a bit more understanding as to what a child of his age needed to know.

Tutoring Approach:

For the teaching of maths I feel that there is no substitute for practice. I supply lots of relevant problems after having taught/revised a particular topic. I feel that a person learns maths best when they attempt questions and are able to ask for advice or to be shown several examples before attempting these on their own.
For the sciences my approach is different as this is more fact based. I take a particular section of the subject before going through all that needs to be known for the relevant examination. After, I ask a selection of questions in order to ascertain the level of understanding. If it needs improving I shall approach the topic from a different angle to see if this helps in the understanding of it. If the understanding is good I would then move on to more exam based written questions.

Personal Description:
Hi!

I'm a 21-year old trainee teacher studying in Winchester. I have vast experience teaching and working with children (see below) and I am confident in my own ability of subjects across the curriculum.

I live in Farnham, Surrey and will shortly be moving to Fleet, Hampshire. I am willing to travel, but do not drive so access via public transport is a must. I can also tutor from home, if that is more practical.

I'm fun and enthusiastic- I think learning is best achieved when children are enjoying themselves. I therefore constantly strive to teach learning objectives in varied and interesting ways.

Teaching Experience:

As I mentioned above, I am a trainee teacher. I'm halfway through my training, having completed two years and this has given me ample opportunity to teach.

I have taught one-on-one, small groups and whole class lessons in a variety of subjects (in particular English and Maths) with ages 6- 9. I have also had experience of observing and assisting in the teaching of children aged 4- 11, so I'm confident in my ability to teach across the primary age range.

In addition, I have previously worked in nurseries caring for children aged 3 months- 4 years, following the Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines within small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is informal and laid back. I find this motivates children much more than a strict approach as they enjoy learning and look forward to sessions.

I try to vary each session following my own planning guidelines. Typically, I will start with a subject-appropriate game (for example, Maths Bingo) to warm the child into the learning mood. The main bulk of the session is focusing on the learning objective in a stress-free environment, and then the last 15 minutes are a recap of the session to ensure the learning objectives have been achieved.

I'm a huge advocater of praise, praise, praise to increase confidence and therefore motivation, and follow Bruner's Spiral Curriculum, to ensure the child does not forget key points.

Personal Description:
I am a native Polish. I studied Physics and Astronomy at University of Wroclaw, Poland - speciality: physic teacher. During my studies I worked as a journalist for student's monthly mag and I was writing IT related articles for another title. I came to Scotland over two years ago. At the start I was driving lorries, but due to the demand for polish I becomed a polish tutor in my spare time. At the moment I study languages and Central and Eastern European studies at University of Glasgow.

Teaching Experience:

In Poland I had a work placements as a physics teacher in secondary school. I was also tutoring in various range of subjects: from physics and math through the engineering mechanics to Polish and guitar playing. After I came to Scotland people around me started to ask for a Polish lessons. I agreed to try and I found it really interesting, so I decided to go for that more seriously - I did some reading, bought books and contacted other teachers for advice. I am also doing some translations from time to time - from school and law documents to some specialized texts related to transport industry.

Tutoring Approach:

I find language tutoring really fascinating - I think it's not only about language but it's about way of thinking. I am studying French, where I learn things new for me, and Czech, where I have opportunity to observe what difficulties are encountered by English speakers when learning a Slavic language, and I find both experienced useful when working with my own students. As I was working for years as a journalist, I have more practical then philological approach to language. I am using few books as a base to work with my students (from some basic courses through classic university textbooks by prof. Miodunka to modern well recognized coursebook "Hurra!") but I tend to use also every-day language by working with the newspapers, books or even some movies. My goal is to teach not only the plain language but all cultural aspects which are going with it.
