Personal Description:
I'm a 46-year old graduate of the excellent University of Sussex languages course with a First Class Honours degree in French and Russian. I lived for four years in Paris where I mastered the language and the accent!

As well as language studies, my course encompassed literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries and history, society and politics since the French Revolution - subjects I am therefore qualified to talk about with some authority.

I like to stay abreast of French culture and society and am catching up with some novels I didn't get to read at university (most recently Georges Perec's wonderful <i>La Vie, mode d'emploi</i>)

Teaching Experience:

I have now been privately tutoring students at all levels for 6 years covering most UK exam boards at GCSE KS3 and KS4, AS and A2-level, and I have also helped prepare older students for the DELF.

Recent successes include steering a young lady through her DELF B1 exam with a 92.5% mark and an 11-year old girl passing her selective school entrance exam.

Here are some comments from a couple of clients - originals available on request.

<i>"Thank you so much for all your patient hard work - you taught her exactly the right stuff and there is no way she could have done it without you! I really didn't think it was possible to teach the whole year 7 curriculum in a week but somehow you managed it.

"Tiffin Girls is one of the top state schools in the country and rather competitive. Chatting to the other parents outside the exam, most of the competitors went to good independents or had been tutored over a long period of time. <b>You really knew not only what to teach but how to teach it, which shows you have exceptional skills.</b>"</i> - Anoushka (pupil's mother)

<i>"Just thought I should let you know I got an A! Thanks for all your help"</i> - Helena (A-level student)

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to tailor lessons specifically to a student's needs, but my general method is to engage him or her at a level just above their 'comfort zone'. Learning is about challenging yourself to do better, and it is crucial for a tutor to be supportive and encouraging, and also to keep the bar high.

Lessons can be conducted entirely in French, or in a mixture of English and French. I can work alongside a student's existing course (that is, from a textbook a student is already following), or we can use course books that I recommend.

Where the level allows, I like to draw upon material from contemporary sources such as French news magazines.

For "conversation classes", I find it is useful to base the discussion on an article or a book to help build vocabulary, and also think that incorporating grammar instruction (where appropriate) can be a good idea.

Note that hourly rates are based on the student travelling to my home. If you require tutoring at your own home or office, there is an extra charge per lesson, dependent on distance travelled. Please contact me for more details!

Personal Description:
Iain was born in 1986 in Dundee, Scotland into a large musical family, so unsurprisingly making music was all that he wanted to do from an early age. He first began to learn the trumpet in school aged seven, before joining his local brass band Dundee Instrumental on cornet at the age of ten. By the age of twelve, Iain had been promoted to principal cornet, a position he later went on to hold with several of Scotland's top bands, also including the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. Many solo competitions were won along the way - including the junior section at the British Open Solo Championships at age eleven. Having gained two Trinity College diplomas before the age of eighteen, Iain took the advice of teacher David James and moved south to study music at the University of Salford, where his playing really began to blossom. Since then Iain has held positions as principal cornet with many of the UK's leading brass bands including his current seat with the world renowned Leyland Band. He has enjoyed many successful contest and concert performances, and is fast establishing a reputation as one of the finest cornet soloists of his generation, performing, adjudicating and giving master-classes as far afield as the USA, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Japan. In 2009 Iain was the recipient of a prestigious Dewar Arts award, awarded for performance in trumpet. This award allowed him to complete his postgraduate studies at Salford, graduating with an MA in Music (performance) in 2010. Iain is now a cornet tutor at the University of Salford where he is also undertaking researchinto focal dystonia in musicians, working towards a PhD. Iain recorded and released his first solo CD entitled "Vanguard" in August 2012, a release which has been met with great critical acclaim and has fast proven popular.

Iain is also an experienced guitarist and teacher of electric and acoustic guitar as well as the bass guitar.

Teaching Experience:

Salford University, Sefton Music Service, Love Music Trust, numerous private students, masterclasses and private teaching all over the UK as well as in the Netherlands, Denmark, USA, Japan, to name but a few.

Personal Description:
I am 50 years old and live in Northern Ireland after over a decade living and teaching English in Italy.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English in Italy and Italian in Northern Ireland. During my time in Italy, I taught English privately on a daily basis, accumulating well over 1,000 teaching hours. I also taught for an academic year at a local high school. My experience includes all ages from primary school to retirees, and from professionals to university undergraduates. Teaching English to migrant workers brought me into contact with many different people from Eastern European countries.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in tailoring my lessons to the individual or group that I am teaching. Everyone starts with different levels and abilities. I see it as my job to home in on areas that need attention and make them my focus using conversation and exercises. I like to make sure my students understand the grammar well and also concentrate on pronunciation.

Personal Description:
I am a final year PhD researcher in Cambridge University, studying Biotechnology. My academic qualifications include:

- MSc Biochemical Engineering, University College London (2012)

- BSc Medical Biochemistry, King's College London (2011)

- International Baccalaureate (36), Bexley Grammar School (2008)

Chemistry (HL): 6

What sets me apart from other tutors?

1) I have tutored a large number of students on a one-to-one basis for over 5 years, and they all went on to achieve their desired grades.
2) I am quite flexible in when I can offer lessons.
3) I am very flexible in what I teach, as I can cover all Sciences and Maths, so you don't need to find 2 or 3 different tutors!
4) I am quite young, which helps me see the problem from the student's perspective, since it wasn't that long ago when I was in their position.
5) I am able to tutor at GCSE level, A-Level or International Baccalaureate.

Since secondary school, Maths and the Sciences have always been my strengths, and I am lucky to have been able to apply both areas in my past and present degrees.
Besides English, I can speak Cantonese Chinese fluently, and a little bit of Mandarin Chinese.

Teaching Experience:

Over the past 5 years, I have tutored a variety of pupils, and every time the grades they end up obtaining have met or exceeded their targets.
Overall I have accumulated over 2000 hours of personal tuition.

I have experience with the Edexcel, OCR and AQA exam boards and can provide my students with relevant study materials.

Tutoring Approach:

I provide a friendly and informal environment. I usually let the student control the pace of the lesson by asking them to interrupt me if we arrive at a topic they find difficult.

Every student is different and my teaching style is adapted to their individual needs once we have identified their weaknesses.
I believe understanding is the best approach to learning and teaching. There's no point in just memorising things if you don't understand where they came from. I explain things in such a way that it is easy to understand, and I am very patient.

If the student has learnt something in school they didn't quite understand, I can go over the topic again with them during our lesson.
If the student understood everything in school, I can teach them new topics to prepare them for when they learn that topic in school.
Lastly, near exam times, I can offer intense exam revision and exam paper practice.

Below is a selection of feedback I have received on another tuition agency website.

Personal Description:
My name is Margo and I'm 35. I am an avid cyclist and in 2011 fulfilled my lifelong dream of cycling round the world. My 27,000 km, New Zealand to Scotland trip took 2 years to complete and was the best experience of my life so far. As for other interests, I am a keen mountain biker and take part in the Scottish cross country championships every year. Before setting off on my trip, I came 2nd overall in the female masters category and 2nd in the sport category at the British championships.

Teaching Experience:

Before leaving the UK in 2009, I had been working as a French teacher for almost 7 years. Much of my work came from tuition agencies, with whom I taught students up to University level. I taught French to adult learners at the Glasgow College of Commerce in 2007 and pre 5's in several nursery schools around Glasgow from 2004 to 2009. I studied French and German at the University of Glasgow and finished my degree in 2001. I have however mainly focused on French during my teaching career. I have lived in France and worked as an English assistant in a French school for one year during the 4th year of my degree and have just returned from working in the French Alps for a year. More importantly, in September I am returning to Glasgow University to do my PGDE(teacher training year) to become a "proper" secondary French teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

Whether you are a parent looking to give their child a head start in foreign language learning, a Highers student struggling with exam practice or just an adult looking to learn a new skill, I am here to help. I have many years experience working with all ages and levels and would love to get you to where you want to be in French.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. I love reading, writing and reading some more. I also enjoy sketching while listening to music. I am a frank person, have an straightforward approach to everything in life and like people to behave the same way with me (which always does not happen). I love to have a laugh, but don't worry, I can be serious when needed( for example, when teaching your children English and History).

Teaching Experience:

While I have never tutored for money, I have an extensive tutoring experience. I volunteered to teach illiterate students English as a part of a volunteering program from my high school in India and have been a part of that program for the past two years. I also used to tutor my two siblings in History, Geography and English.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that children learn best in a stress free environment. If they feel it is fun and challenging, they will be more willing to learn than if they feel it to be an obligation. English is an easy subject and children enjoy learning it, once they realize the joys that English has to offer. History can be challenging due to the vast amounts one has to learn by heart but steady habit of writing down answers to questions helps more than reading the material ten times. Other than that, History is a vastly interesting subject which helps us understand the workings of the present society and of course, knowledge about our ancestors. Geography is relatively straightforward subject. A lot of practice and a dedicated perusal of it should be enough to get good scores. While it can be relatively dry, it can be made interesting with pictures and videos.I focus on exam technique, past papers as well as text work (English Lit.)

Personal Description:
I am a based on the Wirral on Merseyside. I have a degree in Mathematics and Psychology from University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I am 25 years old and have spent time learning my trade in a variety of schools across the Wirral. My teach consistently at an outstanding level which has been supported by observations and reviews from senior staff.

Teaching Experience:

I recently completed my PGCE and am now half way through my NQT year. I have trained in Grammar and Comprehensive schools and have taught GCSE and A-Level. I have worked with pupils across the whole spectrum and take a versatile approach to teaching to meet the needs of each individual.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe my selling point is my knowledge of the requirements to meet individual target grades at GCSE. I enjoy teaching all levels and abilities. I like to think as I am fresh out of university I am able to relate the learning to the pupils and teach them methods and strategies to help them retain and overcome challenges.

Personal Description:
I am a confident, diligent and sociable person, with a wide knowledge of world history, and specialising in American and South-East Asian history and culture. I hold a double first class Bachelors degree in History and American Studies from Canterbury Christ Church University, and have had many years experience leading youth projects such as youth councils, young persons' scrutiny forums (YPSF) and have acted as a liasion on several historical and cultural preservation projects such as the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) and the Church House Preservation Committee.

Teaching Experience:

I have previous experience as a teaching assistant to KS3 and KS4 level history at a state secondary school.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a holistic approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the student becomes engaged within a fuller understanding of the period being studied. As a former student and teach of history, I realise that the principal block to a tutee's understanding of historical concepts is a lack of immersion within the relevant time-frames and thus an inability to fully comprehend why certain actions were taken, and the wider effect this had.

Thus in my approach I am firm believer that it is as important for every student to understand to a higher level than that offered by the current state curriculum the context of the period they are studying. As a consequence I offer tailored introductions to said period's culture, economy, religious and political setting, and even physical geography.

Furthermore, I offer the necessary skills to craft this knowledge into well-reasoned, informed essays. My intimate knowledge of the state education system and beyond has imbued me with the ability to gauge how assignments will be assessed and thus I can work with students not only on improving their knowledge, but showcasing this in highly-marked, structured and coherent written forms.

I use a number of methods to achieve this, including homework assignments, but also using character adoption, audio-visual aids and a mixture of written and verbal questions of varying length and form.

Personal Description:
I graduated in Classics (5 years) in Italy. I made extensive studies in Ancient Greek and Latin languages and literatures. The final thesis dealt with the historical fragments of Cato the Censor. I am now leading a research doctorate in Roman history at the University of Newcastle. The research concerns the tribunes of the plebs within the Mid-Republican period (218-134 BC), especially focused on the political role of the tribunate in shaping the Roman politics through their legislative action. My first language being Italian, lessons are available both in English and in my mother tongue. As for the Italian literature I can cover all the centuries of its great history, from the pre humanistic time (Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio), until the twentieth century.

Teaching Experience:

I have had experience of teaching in the italian school as a substitute teacher of Latin, Italian and Ancient Greek at the Liceo Classico. I also taught at Universities, most notably Latin and Ancient Greek, in quality of private tutor.

I run seminars in Roman History during the first academic term (2015-2016) at Newcastle University, focusing particularly on the works of the Greek historian Polybius, Sallust's historiographical view concerning the role of the common Roman people in order to determine the events described within the Bellum Iugurthinum, and the political issues of the last period of the Roman Republic that emerge from Cicero's speech Pro lege Manilia.

Tutoring Approach:

Lectures, with particular attention to the requests of the student. Translation exercises (focused on the morphology and syntax of both Ancient Greek and Latin), which are essential to strengthen and, if necessary, to deepen their knowledge of the classical languages&#8203;&#8203;. Additional readings compared to the tasks assigned by the school.

Personal Description:
Ola! Tudo bem?

I am Alexsandra, I am a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, a fully qualified and certified language teacher who has been teaching Brazilian Portuguese for more than 15 years.

I really LOVE what I do.

Over the years I have met many children, usually born to mixed parents or outside Brazil, who unfortunately cannot speak Portuguese.

I have also met adults, who regret not to have learned Portuguese from their parents when they were a child.

Some parents also regret not to have taught Portuguese to their children for whatever reason when they had the chance to do it.

Then I decided to help Brazilian parents teach Portuguese to their children while they are still young. Children can learn a language very easily if they are exposed to it, but they still need your help, especially if you live abroad.

Whenever I go to Brazil on holiday, I always buy books, CDs and DVDs for children so my students can increase their knowledge of Portuguese and also learn more about the Brazilian culture through stories, songs and movies.

Speaking to your child only in Portuguese (your native language) is a great gift and an asset you can give to your child.

Teaching Experience:

Have you been to Brazil and now you want to keep practicing the language? Going to Brazil for a lovely holiday? I can help you.

I have a degree in Portuguese and English Language and Literature and used to teach Portuguese and English in Brazil until I moved to the UK in 2013. Since then, I have been teaching Brazilian Portuguese ( private lessons ). Teaching is my passion and I always try to present the language in a fun and effective way making use of a wide range of resources, especially songs, to enhance the learning process.
I hold formal qualifications to teach Portuguese and I have experience in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. My personal qualities as a language tutor are:

- Enthusiasm

- Reliability

- Creativity

- Experience

I have taught students of all ages and abilities and I am really passionate about teaching languages. It is a real pleasure for me to see the development of my students` language skills.

Portuguese is a wonderfully expressive and fascinating language and can be useful for education, travel and business.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer face to face Portuguese Language lessons. My courses are tailored to individual needs.

My Portuguese lessons emphasize both the culture and the literature of Brazil, and include classes on popular culture, music & cinema. My personal language lab has a varied collection of both Brazilian films as well as music. I also offer options for a "Tarde no Cinema", where students can get together and watch Brazilian films.

Each student has a different way of learning or wants to learn the language for a specific purpose, so it's really important that you let me know why do you want to learn Portuguese, if you speak any other foreign language, if you want to focus on writing, speaking, understanding or all three, if you have a deadline to be fluent in Portuguese, how many lessons per week are you willing to take.

If you are beginning to learn Portuguese or if you already have an intermediate or advanced level, I'll be happy to help you out with whatever you need. I can explain grammatical points, practice vocabulary and most importantly help you develop your oral proficiency.

I have a wide variety of teaching resources and I try to make my lessons as engaging and motivating as possible.

Please contact me for any enquiries.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Obrigada!

Cambridge graduate with over 150 hours tutoring experience

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating from the University of Cambridge in 2014 with a BA in English, I have accrued over 150 hours of tutoring. I have taught students from ages 11 to 18.

I have previously tutored for 13+, scholarship, GCSE, AS, A-Level and University. In recent months, I have helped my students to achieve:
A* at GCSE (up from a B)
A at A-Level (up from a C)
A at AS Level, coursework (up from a C)

I have also assisted students applying to Oxbridge - helping with interview technique, which subjects to choose at A-Level and general tips for success. My most recent tutee for Oxbridge assistance has just started her first year at the University of Cambridge.

Tutoring Approach:

My tailored approach to the needs of each individual tutee enables me to provide a high level of support. It is important to me to teach in a way that engages students; encouraging their strengths by discovering what interests and excites them, and giving them the confidence to work on their weaknesses. Personal Description:
I'm a 24 year old recent physics graduate, based in Chipping Norton). I'm patient, knowledgeable and have a passion for the sciences!

I'm currently applying for a PhD in nuclear physics to start September 2017 and am working as a part-time private tutor in the meantime.

As part of my degree, I completed 3 years of studying, combined with a year of industrial research work in Cambridge. Before this, I studied A-levels in physics, mathematics, chemistry and History, in addition to 10 GCSEs.

Outside of work, I enjoy everything from football and tennis to hiking and rock climbing.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a freelance private tutor for almost two years now, working in both the West Yorkshire area (whilst attending University) and the Warwickshire/Oxfordshire areas (following the completion of my degree). My tutoring experience includes all three sciences and mathematics at Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and GCSE/iGCSE levels, along with maths and physics at AS/A2 and degree levels.

Alongside my physics degree, I partook in an optional 10 month `Physics in Schools` placement - which saw me work as a part-time teaching assistant for maths and physics classes at a local secondary school. In addition to helping out during classes (lesson planning, 1-to-1 support, marking etc.), I also ran after school maths and science tutoring sessions for students struggling with the course.

In addition, for 12 months during my `Year in Industry`, I represented my employer as a "Young Engineer`s Ambassador" to local schools in the Cambridge area. Twice a week, alongside a team of 3, I helped demonstrate basic scientific, mathematical and mechanical engineering methods to classes of all ages - with the intention of inspiring the next generation of potential scientists. The sessions included presentations, 1-to-1 guidance and interactive group workshops.

Tutoring Approach:

Having struggled with maths at a young age and, as a result, taking extra sessions (aged 11), I am a huge believer in the benefits that can come from 1-to-1 tutoring. I aim to create a balance between a fun, relaxed teaching atmosphere, where students can feel confident enough to fully engage in the material, and a secure structured teaching environment with a clear plan for the future. I employ a wide variety of teaching materials in order to keep notoriously dull content interesting and intuitive, whilst ensuring that no method, theory or equation is relegated to the realms of confusion and mystery.

Overall, I have a flexible teaching style and will always formulate a teaching plan using the input from the student, parent/guardian and myself, with detailed progress updates after each session so the client can feel confident they are getting their money's worth!
