Personal Description:
APPOINTMENT SLOTS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE (as of March 2015):
Friday 7pm onwards and holiday times.

As a student, little came easy for me.

I learned the hard way.

Now, with over 20 years of teaching experience in a variety of institutions - from Oxbridge entrance to comprehensives on 'Special Measures' - I am young enough to remember my struggles and old enough to know better.

I know how to bridge that gap for my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

This is my sixth year as a full-time tutor, but I was a secondary school teacher for 19 years before that.

I have experienced many types of academic performance from high-performing grammar schools to comprehensives on 'special measures'. I have held a variety of positions of responsibility within schools, particularly in the pastoral system such as Head of Year. I have been a grade-A examiner for AQA GCSE Geography.

During the last six years of 11 Plus entrance, including September 2014, 15 out of my 25 students have passed. I have also successfully helped one parent and child through the appeals procedure for grammar selection. Furthermore, a 12 Plus tutee in 2011 was the only girl to pass and get a place at South Wilts. Two out of three 12+ and 13+ tutees I have taught have passed their exams.

I have taught numerous syllabi: in the last six years I have tutored AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC at A level Geography. Indeed, I taught the whole of the A2 Edexcel Geogaphy syllabus online to one a tutee in Moscow: he has now gained a place at Aston University. I have mainly tutored the AQA and Edexcel syllabi for GCSE Maths. It would be fair to say that the overwhelming majority of my A level tutees experience significant gains and regularly obtain A or B grades.

At the moment (March 2015) I have 20 tutees in total: this includes 4 home-school tutees doing a variety of subjects such as GCSE Maths and Geography as well as Key Stage 3 Maths, English, History, Geography, Citizenship and RE; three GCSE English tutees; one Key Stage 3 Maths tutee; two Key Stage 3 English tutees; three 12 Plus tutees; five Key Stage 2 Maths tutees; two GCSE Maths tutee; one KS5 numeracy tutee, one A Level Geography tutee and, finally, three GCSE Geography tutees.

I would say on average, across the year, I would have between 15 and 20 tutees each week. Nearer exam time, this can creep up to 25.

Tutoring Approach:

One size does not fit all . . .

Tutoring and learning should be natural and intuitive so that tutees can 'fly' by themselves.

To make the most of tuition, a tutee must be 'on-board'. If it's their idea - even better. A tutee that is in-charge of their own learning makes an excellent pupil.

As a tutor, I decide what is right for the tutee - not an institution. Parents often want someone who is familiar with the education system but independent enough to give an honest assessment. My main concern is the welfare of the tutee - not just their academic progress - nor the reputation of some teacher or institution. If something is not right for a tutee, no matter how forceful a parent might be or how much money I might lose, I simply will not do it. Each year there are a handful of tutees I turn away because of this.

In the first session I will try to identify what it is the tutee needs, and you may wish to quiz me in more detail. I will need access to school reports and examples of the tutee's work. Through discussion with my tutee and parental input it should become clear the reason for the tutoring.

From this 'snag' list, I will design a bespoke program to meet the educational needs of the tutee. It is flexible and, unlike a classroom situation, I can respond immediately to the needs of the tutee.

Homework will always be set, depending upon the demands placed upon the tutee by the normal school week. The tutee will be far more involved with learning than in a normal school class where they can 'hide', so prospective tutees need to expect plenty of chat and discussion, reviewing work and giving feedback.

For learning to be 'on the wing', to be natural and instinctive, tutees need to work hard without feeling the burden. This can only happen through enjoyment and a lot of laughter. That's my part: helping tutees to work really hard without realising it.

If at any point I feel unable to help, I won't just prolong tuition, or if our work has met its aims then I will call a halt. The point of tuition is not to need me anymore, so they can 'fly' all by themselves.

I offer two types of 'remote' tuition options at the moment:

i/ ONLINE FACE-TO-FACE TUITION: face-to-face on Skype is very good in dealing with syllabus issues and reinforcing and filling in the holes the class teachers leave behind. Face-to-face tuition lends itself well to visual resources such as diagrams, maps and pictures. It is primarily discussion-based and the tutee needs to take notes as we go along. I regularly send tutees files to prepare them for the lesson and to discuss in the lesson. If a tutee comes to face-to-face tuition and expects to be spoon-fed or entertained, it just won't work. Extra work can be set to test their written understanding. Usually, it is enough to go through topics the student struggles with. Once they 'click' with the topic/issue, we move onto other areas. Payment for this type of tuition is a flat fee each week to cover lesson preparation and the lesson itself. The marking of substantial pieces of work outside of lesson time such as essays will incur a modest marking fee.

ii/ CORRESPONDENCE-STYLE WITH UNLIMITED EMAIL SUPPORT: work is set through powerpoints, pdf files and word documents for the student to do on their own in their own time. This should keep the tutee occupied for between 1-3 hours each week, unless more is required. It is then returned to me within the week. I mark it and provide feedback in the form of an audio file (up to 30 mins), talking them through the various issues. Any amounts of email conversations to help the student with this particular piece of work are allowed, after feedback has been given. This is very much an ongoing and open-ended commitment, once work has been set and feedback given, and the student is totally free to contact me with any issues. As a result, the payment structure is open-ended and depends on the amount of time used to prepare resources, mark and give audio feedback. This is added up at the end of each week, and the client is then billed. Follow-up emails and support are not timed but are considered as a 'free' part. Generally, this time will be from about 45-90 mins per week. I keep a track of the time minute to minute and endeavour to keep the time used as short as possible while setting about 1-3 hours of work. This is very much a trust system of working. I tailor the work individually to suit the student as opposed to an ordinary correspondence course that just covers syllabus content.

Please be aware that I do charge for travelling over 30 miles (roundtrip: 15 miles each way):
30-40 mile roundtrip - 5
41-50 mile roundtrip - 10
51-60 mile roundtrip - 15
61-70 mile roundtrip - 20

Personal Description:
I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2015, where I completed my Masters in Bioscience & Business. Prior to this, I studied Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London for 2 years before switched to studying Biological Sciences locally at Salford University. I graduated in 2013 with a First Class Honours in Biological Sciences (BSc Hons) ranking in the top 2% of our class. Teaching is something I have enjoyed immensely throughout my studies, and continue to do so.

Coming from a varied academic background has given me a strong foundation in all of the Natural Sciences (Maths, Chemistry & Biology and Physics). I am passionate about all of these subjects - I would be more than willing to help a student out in either of them regardless of their level or previous achievement

I studied in Manchester for my GCSE`s and A-levels where I achieved the following grades:

4 A`s at A2-level in: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & General Studies

GCSE level: 6A*'s: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business Studies, French, 2As, 2Bs

Teaching Experience:

Taught Maths & Sciences extensively at GCSE/A-level while at school and college. This was as a part-time tutor for under-achieving students after school and during some lunch breaks.

As well as often helping out classmates unofficially I have tutored students up to A2 & Undergraduate level in Chemistry & Biology (and selected topics in Maths) helping them to achieve the highest possible marks in the their exams. All of my students have achieved their goals.

Teaching so far it has been an immensely rewarding experience - and one that I am committed to pursuing!

Tutoring Approach:

I treat each tutee as an individual, and work with them according to their specific needs. I believe it is important to learn how to think critically & independently, especially when tackling the Sciences or Maths. I encourage and help tutees to develop this thinking process and also to find out what really motivates them to excel in their chosen subjects.

I have many relevant learning resources (books, lecture notes, past exams, etc..) for all of my teaching subjects so along with your own learning materials I will add in some extra helpful material as & when necessary.

If you (as a parent or student) can specify what exactly your aim is (whether it be to cover a single topic, to complete a past paper or to learn a whole course from start to finish in time for an exam) I will help you to prepare and execute the best plan of action to reach your targets!

Please get in touch to discuss your goals and how best I can help you achieve them

Personal Description:
I am a student at the University of Oxford reading German. For my A Levels I studied German, English Literature and History and received A*, A* and an A. For AS I also did Mathematics and for my GCSE's I studied: Maths, Dual Science, English Literature, English Language, German, French, History, Art and Drama.

Teaching Experience:

I worked in a primary school for 6 months in my gap year, primarily teaching reading, writing and mathematics to the younger years as well as art, sport and IT skills. Previous to this job, I taught a German club at a local primary school and have worked on a charity literacy scheme, where I tutored reading and writing one on one to a child who was underachieving for his age group. I have also done other volunteer tutoring at a primary school, reading one on one with the children and improving their literacy skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it is best to discuss together what you feel you need help with or needs to be worked on and from there we can assess how best to proceed. I prefer you to bring your own material to me as from this I can see what it is you are struggling with, how advanced your school work is and the level you are aiming for.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced teacher of both classics and modern languages, and have taught in a variety of secondary schools. I have stopped classroom teaching now because of the demands of a young family but I am keen to carry on teaching in a different capacity. I am passionate about languages, words and communication and love to share this with others. I have lived abroad for prolonged periods in France and Italy, and travel to see friends there whenever possible.

Teaching Experience:

Since completing my PGCE in 1992 I have taught Latin, Greek, French and Italian, from beginners to A level and Oxbridge, in secondary schools, both private and state. More recently I have been giving private lessons to both adults and teenagers.
***PLEASE NOTE THAT I TEACH ANCIENT GREEK, NOT MODERN! The UK tutors website does not give Ancient Greek as an option in the drop down list. I am not able to teach modern Greek.

Tutoring Approach:

Successful language teaching should combine a fun approach using oral practice including song lyrics and games with a more structured approach to grammar; this gives the student confidence that they really understand the language used. The advantage of private lessons is that I can focus on what the individual learner wants, which might be lots of oral practice to become more proficient at speaking, or to pass a specific exam. I do like to set homework from week to week as this is an important part of progress; but it is not compulsory!

Personal Description:
I studied Theology at both Leeds Trinity College and Durham University, where I achieved a First Class Honours degree and later Merit. After doing regular guest teaching and classroom assistance, I took the PTLLS Level 4 at the Advance Training Academy and began tutoring in 2014. Since then I have taught people from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, and Sunderland (to name just a few examples). Each of my students has steadily increased their grades, achieving A*-C.

My aim is to provide first quality tuition in Religious Studies and Philosophy and to help people become more confident in these subjects. I am an individual who is committed to making education a lasting experience rather than a lecture to be endured. My experiences have taught me that each student has the potential to grow and change. To that end I take on students of all dispositions, from the confident and capable to nervous and struggling type.

I am based in the North East of England and offer face-to-face tuition to anyone in this region. However, I offer online tuition to people from other regions (Skype, phone or email).

If you want extra help, email me and we can set up an ice-breaker session. Each lesson from then onwards is specifically tailored to your learning style. We can then focus on a combination of extra content and exam technique. I will continuously ask for feedback to make sure that you are satisfied with the quality of service.

Consider the benefits of having a tutor:
Raise your grades
Increase your self-confidence
Access to continuous support and advice

Why use me personally?
I am patient, creative, and dedicated in helping all students be successful. I have worked with diverse sets of students with wide range of needs. Therefore I am able to work with students of all abilities as I am flexible and adaptable to different settings.
My lessons are very comprehensive. You will typically be given a handout on the relevant topic, discussion and past paper questions and a background on the key critical thinkers. They are each adjusted to your learning style, so we can get quite creative!

I am DBS checked and can provide references upon request.

Teaching Experience:

My experience is threefold:
Classroom assistance: I did classroom work at Gateshead Volunteering and Opportunities Centre and New College Durham (2013). My duties involved: helping struggling students with classroom activities, helping them to express themselves and dealing with classroom behavioural issues. When working with students, I was noted for being approachable, compassionate, kind and patient.
Guest teaching: I gave regular guest lessons in Theology and Religious studies at Leeds Trinity University College, Jesmond Methodist Church, Gosforth High School and the Royal Grammar School (2011-14). My lessons were recognised as well-prepared, thought-provoking, and thorough.
Personal tutoring: since I started tutoring in the North East, I have taught students from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, Gosforth, and Sunderland. I have also given online tuition to students at various regions of the UK (2013-). See testimonials for clients' views on me.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer two types of tuition:
Face-to-face: tuition is conducted at the student's home. It is always good practice to have an adult around the house. Face-to-face tuition is available to any student within reasonable travelling distance of Newcastle City Centre.
Online: tuition is conducted via phone, Skype and email (depending on the client preference). Online tuition is available to any student in the UK.

Each lesson is tailored to individual needs. The preliminary meeting will focus on your learning needs, and from this we will establish your goals for the tuition and the process for helping you to meet them. We will discuss how we can make the sessions play to your individual learning styles and strengths.

In lessons, we usually focus on two specific areas:
Extra teaching: we will usually have a discussion on a particular topic.
You will be given a detailed hand-out, some discussion questions, and (if necessary) a brief background on the important key thinkers.
Essay-writing: I will provide an essay-writing formula, which we will then
apply to past-paper questions, which will support you to write essays based on past exam papers. As part of the service, I will review the answer and provide detailed feedback to support further learning.

Testimonies from previous tutees:

"Michael has been an incredibly reliable tutor, the lessons were very well planned and clearly thought out. It was very helpful that he was willing to cater to individual learning styles and willing to respond to feedback. I think that he would be most helpful for those doing GCSEs and A Levels. Overall, a positive experience, he put in maximum effort to the tutoring sessions."

Hannah.

"You always prepared for each session sending materials prior to the tutoring. You are a very committed teacher, dedicated and caring. You impressed Anna with your knowledge and broadened and deepened her thoughts and ideas as well as her vocabulary. She would not have achieved her grade B if it was not for you. Thank you so much for all your help and support."

Ann

"Michael is a dedicated, supportive and patient tutor, and took the time to create tutoring sessions which were designed with jack's learning style in mind. Michael gave excellent advice and guidance in his subject in preparation for both the AS RE exam, but also essay writing techniques for A2 as he knew this was an area which Jack needed help in developing his skills. I would have no hesitation in recommending Michael's services to anyone. Thank you Michael for your help and support!"

Suzanne

"Rachel was home educated and had chosen Religious Studies as a GCSE in February and the exam was in June so she and Michael had their work cut out for them! Michael worked with Rachel helping her to direct her studies and fill in the gaps of her knowledge. He discussed concepts to give her a more well-rounded understanding of the subject and helped her structure her answers for a GCSE exam. He did all this in an engaging manner which resulted in Rachel developing a real interest and enjoyment of the subject and she achieved an A* in her exam! Michael is a very dedicated and supportive tutor and we would highly recommend him!"

Sharon

"Michael gives my son Joe tutoring, which Joe was rather dubious about to begin with, however it is working well. He is studying for A levels and has dyslexia, I wanted a tutor that could vary their teaching method to accommodate a dyslexic learner and he has done that. Michael clarifies at the start of each session what will be covered, ensures that is what my son requires and at the end that he has understood the session."

Personal Description:
About me:
Hi! I am Zara. I am kind and caring, considerate and patient. I have profound experience teaching languages (Russian and English) to various ages and learning backgrounds. Russian is my native language. I graduated from Russian University and have BA degree in languages.
I enjoy working with children, young people and adults helping them build confidence in their ability to achieve, both academically and socially. My students always get only GOOD RESULTS! Some of them are now students of English Universities studying Russian.
With my experience working at various educational institutions for 12 years (my previous position was senior Lecturer of the Russian University) I have a diverse background with much to offer. I teach the beginners and those who just want to improve their language skills, as well as Business and Legal Russian.
One to one or Skype lessons!

Apart from teaching I do prompt and professional translations from English into Russian and vise verse in such subjects as Business, Economy, Law, Mass Media, etc.

Teaching Experience:

With my experience working at various educational institutions for 12 years (my previous position was senior teacher of the University) I have a diverse background with much to offer. To me, the role of a Tutor is an important and interesting role to hold. It brings a lot of interesting challenges and the idea of working with individuals to develop their natural skills is really what I look forward to when at work. I graduated from Russian Pedagogical University and have BA Degree in languages.

Tutoring Approach:

The methods I teach foreign languages are unique and tailored to an individual' s needs. All students are different and it is very important to find their strengths, focus on them and use them right to develop their learning abilities.
I always seriously and thoroughly prepare myself for each lesson, think over every minute of it, provide my students with useful and interesting material which covers the aspects of the language that my students want to focus on and at the same time, I ensure that the lessons are fun - which means they look forward to them! I use a lot of playing techniques, every aspect of learning the language is involved; Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing. I teach spoken Russian, Business Russian, do prepare for the Exams and so on....
I puts my clients at ease straight away making it the ideal learning environment to progress quickly and easily.

Personal Description:
I'm a native Spanish speaker currently living in Leigh on Sea, I would love to teach and converse with anyone interested in learning the language or improve their speaking and listening skills.
I'm friendly, patient, relaxed, reliable and dedicated. I'm able to teach based on levels and objectives, Grammar, Pronunciation, Speaking, Reading, Writing or simply Conversational classes. I can help you!
I can use different media (videos, books, movies, songs) to teach.
I got a degree in Commercial Admin since 2001.

Teaching Experience:

It is easier for me to teach Spanish because I studied English as a second language, so I understand the process and challenges of learning another language. I know that every person learns in a different way. I am currently working in a private school in Chelmsford. Also, I've teaching Spanish to my own children as they were born here in the UK. I have been teaching Spanish to Adult beginners and GCSE students.

Tutoring Approach:

Based on my experience the communicative approach gives primacy to oral work. Direct contact with the language is very important. Not just from hearing the teacher, but also from using it and from hearing other people besides the teacher. Having personal contact with the language, practicing sounds, improvising and trying to make your own sentences and getting the chance to make mistakes and learn from doing so.

I feel my experience of teaching students and the wide variety of science outreach projects I have worked on, make me an excellent private tutor for any undergraduate or A-level, or casual adult student wishing additional support with their studies.

I am also happy to discuss tutoring GCSE students, although I am not aware of the specifics of the content of the current syllabus. My CRB check (as carried out s part of STEM ambassador training) has expired. However if I receive multiple requests requiring one I am happy to reapply to update it.

Science Oxford Science Cabaret - Family friendly outreach event

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy working directly with others, preferably one on one, to help them develop their knowledge about a subject. This applies especially to biological sciences, which I'm passionate about. Combined with my range and depth of knowledge of the subject area, as well as understanding how university work is assessed and what constitutes good exam technique, I am confident to work with someone to help them achieve their full potential in the subject. I am also experienced at working with a range of learning styles and like to work with the student to see what best works for them with regards to getting the most from and improving their study. I am also a very sociable and friendly person who has a great love of science, which I think comes across in my teaching style, approaching the subject as something that can be both interesting and enjoyable to tackle learning.

Personal Description:
I run my own business specialising in the tutoring of French and Spanish to all ages as a fully-qualified, experienced secondary teacher. I can travel to my students so lessons are held in the comfort of your own home, however, I also tutor online via SKYPE (not available for GCSE students). I benefit from in-depth knowledge of exam boards and their requirements for GCSE. I have been learning and speaking different languages for a very long time. I have lived in, taught in and regularly visited a variety of French and Spanish speaking countries. I believe in languages for all as a bridge to other worlds and cultures. I am enthusiastic and creative in my approach and aim to get you speaking as quickly as possible.

Teaching Experience:

I taught English as a foreign language for 3 years in Quebec, Spain and Prague. I have tutored in the past to earn some extra money (French, Spanish and Phonics) I obtained my secondary pgce in 2009 and taught French and Spanish in two outstanding schools (Ofsted rating) until leaving teaching in 2015 to start my own business which is now well-established.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a creative and enthusiastic tutor who focuses on progress, not perfection. I aim to get you using the language as much as possible. I always ask your motivation for wanting to learn the language because that is what will determine how quickly you progress.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying for a Master's Degree in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey, and applying for my PhD in the same subject, having completed a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing & Philosophy. I am a highly experienced writer, avid reader, and keen researcher. Above and beyond my academic pursuits, I believe strongly in being courteous, professional, and well-dressed at all times, living by the adage that a man is never properly dressed without a tie.

Teaching Experience:

I have a long history of teaching which began when I was studying for my A-levels, teaching judo to primary school children. I also led and taught a Creative Writing society at Alton College before I moved on to my undergraduate degree, a role within which I oversaw the publication of an anthology of student writing. During the latter years of my Bachelor's Degree, I taught creative writing, narration, and game design to younger students on an informal basis, and served as president of the university's PSiFA society. In that role I managed a society of over one hundred members, led meetings, gave speeches, and organised logistics. Now, I am looking to tutor privately while I work full-time on my Master's.

Tutoring Approach:

When it comes to learning, I believe that the most effective method is to teach through example and practice. Learning lists of facts by rote is a poor method, and all too common in education these days. I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaging in the subject, by writing their own work, assessing and identifying their own mistakes, and relying on the guidance and advice provided by a tutor rather than being lectured. Most people retain knowledge and learn best when they do things for themselves. In writing specifically, imagination should be encouraged and developed, and I specialise in three core areas; workshopping through written exercises (having the student write short pieces aimed at developing certain areas, and then assessing them through discussion), combining research with writing (learning research skills and showing how they can be applied to improving the student's writing), and planning & structure (to create effective work methods).

I am currently an undergraduate History student at the University of Warwick. I have three years of tutoring experience in History, English and Politics. I achieved straight As and A*s at GCSE and have 3 A*s at A Level in English, History and Politics, as well as a B in Maths and a C in Classics.

Teaching Experience:

Tutor for GCSE students in English, History and Maths throughout my A Level studies and tutoring of A level students during my gap year.

Tutoring Approach:

My lessons are engaging and fun. My first lesson will always focus on establishing the current level of the student and establishing their long term goals. At the end of most weeks homework will be set to reinforce the things we have gone over during the lesson. I largely work from mark schemes and exam practices, as the long term goal of parents and students tends to be centred on exam results, but I also believe in the enjoyment of learning and will always focus on making the subjects I teach come to life.
