I have maintained my interest in the ancient world and languages and have continued to study at Birkbeck. I am now returning to University to complete a PGCE in Classics (2013/2014).

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately since 2012, and have had a range of pupils aged from 11 through to A Level. Although I am just starting my teacher training, I have been observing in a variety of schools for the last six months. I have a detailed understanding of the curriculum for each school year and the GCSE, AS and A Level set texts and the language level required.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an enthusiasm for Classics which I have been told is infectious, and I am a firm believer that learning should be enjoyable. I have studied Latin since the age of 11, and Greek since 16, and have a very thorough knowledge of grammar and syntax in both languages. I am particularly skilled at Unseen Translation and Prose Composition.

I tailor my tuition to my pupil by informally assessing their language ability during our first session. I offer language tuition at any level and have experience of preparing students for University Entrance Exams. I am also well practiced in tutoring Greek to A Level students intending to study Classics at degree level.

The young people I tutored included those with learning and mental health difficulties. All tutees achieved their grade targets. My third passed despite not sitting his GCSE exams in the past due to having a breakdown.

I have a year's experience working with young people with behavioural and emotional difficulties and learning disabilities. As a support worker in a therapeutic residential care home a personal strength was building a rapport with young people and undertaking therapeutic key work sessions, teaching them to manage their emotions and make positive decisions. As a team leader at Action for Children I am learning to communicate with young people with learning disabilities in new ways, especially when they are non-verbal, and pay more attention to body language and signing.

I actually started teaching as soon as I left University in 1993. In those days, I did not have teaching qualification. I then decided to get some experience outside education. My strength in teaching has always been on a one to one basis. My tutoring style is quite unique. Being a school teacher myself, I now understand why it is so difficult for students to understand the subjects that I teach. Style of teaching is also important and how you come across to the students is also very important. Investing into new ways and new ideas in order to aid students understanding is also very important. Both students and parents have offered positive feedback from the great improvement in their grade as a result of my tuition. For example, a student`s grade in A Level Physics improved from originally an E to an A after my tuition, while others attend their preferred schools after help revision for their entrance exams.

Teaching Experience:

After various school placements, such as teaching classes at St Aidan`s (ranked amongst the highest achieving comprehensive schools in the country), for over five years I have helped a multitude of pupils ranging from as young as six through to mature students.
Having experienced rigorous training, I am an Examiner for a major board and have relished the challenges of marking
candidates` papers. I feel this gives me an invaluable perspective when preparing my students for their own tests.
I am familiar with the different examination boards, particularly AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE and ISEB. Covering English and Reasoning where desired, I have prepared students for 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations as well as the STEP and PAT tests required for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. With my tuition, students have gained entrance to the schools of Aldenham, Fulham Prep, Harrogate Ladies, Sedbergh, Charterhouse and Latymer. After my tuition, candidates attained the necessary grades for their university offers, including from Oxbridge, to study courses relevant to our preparation. I also have experience aiding with IB and professional skills tests together with Pre-U and IGCSE.
I am happy to offer tuition for all other syllabuses as well, for example WJEC and for free-standing maths qualifications.
I also offer tuition to adults wanting to improve their own maths understanding and skills, for example to help with their career or to pass graduate skills tests such as Kenexa, SHL and numeracy for QTS etc.
I have helped several students with Asperger Syndrome, those with dyslexia and students who are home schooled, have conditions including severe physical handicaps, speech and language difficulties or have had to change school due to behavioural difficulties. Furthermore, I have been trained for and have taught looked after children and also have experience of helping those for whom English is an additional language.

Tutoring Approach:

I find I can relate to students in a calm and patient manner and I have enjoyed helping them through difficulties with their subjects. I endeavour to find and solve the problems students have in their understanding to give them a firmer grasp of the topic, with the benefits from this being increased confidence and improved results.

I am a successful local tutor and teacher with an MA in Education from Oxford Brookes University (2016), a Postgraduate Diploma in English and Language in Education from the University of Reading (2012). I also have a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Secondary - English) from Oxford Brookes University (2007) and a BA Hons in English Literature (2006). I am passionate about my subject and enthusiastic about improving both my pedagogical and subject knowledge. With A Level clients, I often re-read the key exam texts and exam specifications in order to deliver a successful tutorial. For GCSE, I am confident with multiple exam boards but, again, I take a sincere interest in changes to qualifications and specifications. I have recently led a team of ten teachers in our delivery of the GCSE English qualification through WJEC. I have nine years experience of working in the state secondary sector as a Qualified English Teacher; teaching anything from Key Stage 3 (11 years - 14 years) up to Key Stage 5 (A Level) including GCSE. This would be the first time that I'll be teaching spanish to a kid. Although I've been working for the past month with a little girl. But I can assure that the kids will learn as my classes will not be about studying but about having fun with craft, making recipes, playing games and more.

While taking my A levels I was a prefect, and my duties included helping English students in years seven and eight with their work. My Politics A level was self-taught with two other students. I love learning, but I haven't always felt that way. I currently read one book a week, while not so long ago as a student I truly hated reading. I had a tough time with developing relevant skills, procrastination and a very limited mindset while studying for my A Levels. This resulted in many set backs, high stress and low motivation. However, I learned something that has completely transformed my life in every way. I am determined to share this with others, which why I love working with young people.

While attempting to find a solution to my 'student problems' I developed a fascination with the human brain. I read extensively on the topics of psychology, neuroscience and learning. The knowledge and tools that I have discovered has helped me to overcome many issues that most students face daily. For this reason I have spent the last 5 years mentoring and coaching students of various ages, to empower them and motivate them to love learning as much as I do.

In my current role as an Academic Learning Coach at a sixth form college I design and teach study skills workshops, lessons and support students one to one. Personal Description:
After spending some time working in the IT industry, including a spell being practically a one-man IT department for a small business, I discovered a love of - and I like to think a knack for - guiding and supporting the learning of others through teaching and training. Initially this was in the IT/Computer Science fields, but more recently I have diversified into Maths. Seeing the "lightbulb moment", when a learner finally conquers a problem, is an undoubted highlight of my job. Away from teaching, I am a music buff, and I also love to discover new places and meet new people.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching professionally as a college lecturer since 2007 and privately since 2014, teaching Maths at KS3 and GCSE level, and IT from KS3 to BTEC Level 3. While I love the 'cut and thrust' of a classroom, I find private tuition to be particularly rewarding - being able to devote more time to each learner can make a real difference to those who might otherwise get overlooked in a large class, and only serves to increase yet further the satisfaction in seeing them succeed.

Tutoring Approach:

I can readily adapt teaching styles to fit the needs of individual learners. I recognise the importance of having a Plan B and trying different approaches to suit different learning styles. I am also a firm believer that successful learning depends on four main factors - hard work, willingness, perseverance and self-belief. Students often have plenty of the first three, but may lack a little of the latter.
