Personal Description:
My name is Duncan. I completed a Physics/Maths Degree in 1995 before researching for a PhD which I completed in 1999. I then worked for a government research laboratory and then a top-rated university research department. I have since moved into teaching as I find it more rewarding than research.

Teaching Experience:

I am a self-employed Maths Tutor and it is my main income. For this reason I am continually developing new resources for my students and continually developing my coaching skills. I am not a classroom teacher... instead I am a specialist one-to-one coach which requires very different skills.

I have a number of regular slots for long-term students (most of which are usually taken at any one time) and some capacity for one-off sessions (or a short series of sessions). I run a special "Exam Diary" from April through to June with extra sessions available for people looking for help in the lead-up to the summer exams. My actual availability varies... please contact to find out more!

I have experience of tutoring for A-level, GCSE Higher, GCSE Foundation and 11+/13+ for Maths (including C1-4, M1, S1, etc.).

In Summer 2012 one student surprised their class by getting a good grade at C1 (unlike the rest of the class) because the teacher had not prepared them for unusual questions (but I had prepared my student)... another student was raised from a U to a C at AS Level... and another student has gone up two sets at school within less than 12 months... one student got an A* and made it to Cambridge... and another student made it to Canford with a special recommendation in their acceptance letter for their maths. I cannot guarantee this level of success but believe I offer a "unique, unfair advantage".

I am also happy to offer support for all science subjects up to GCSE level (and I can also offer Physics A-Level support to my regular students).

Limited help is available to university students. However, generally this is difficult because subjects become so varied at this level that it can be difficult for me to know exactly what your course is looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is three-fold...

First I aim to work on basic skills... these are the foundation of success in Mathematics. If you know how to do a really complicated question in A-Level Maths you can lose most of the points if you accidently do not rearrange the equation correctly at the start. This is really true.

Secondly I aim to work on topic-specific skills. I have customised worksheets (written by me) that include fake exam questions for most topics. For example, for C1, C2, C3 and C4 exams I have a set of questions for every topic that are not the same as previous questions in past papers... this is a significant advantage for my students as I have tried to anticipate likely questions that may come up that the examiners have not set in previous years.

Thirdly I will coach the individual student to better use their natural ability. This may mean boosting their confidence... it often (bizarrely) means lowering their confidence in their first answer (but increasing their understanding of how real mathematicians work) so they better double-check their answers as they go through and lose less marks in the exam. It may also mean developing memory tricks for key facts, approaches to understanding questions and some really nifty tricks for how to spot what the examiner is after.

Especially with younger students, I like to keep my lessons creative and practical. I studied English and Drama at Bristol University and then went on to train at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Recently, I have been tutoring in English, Drama, 11+ Common Entrance exams and general Primary school help.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for over 6 years. Alongside my tutoring, I am currently teaching Music and Drama in schools and I run workshops with Sixth Formers on ways of analysing texts practically.

7+ - I worked with Elektra (6) preparing her for 7+ Examinations. Covering English, Maths and Reasoning focussed on entry to Notting Hill and Ealing High School.

7+ - Working with Harry on English, Maths and exam technique, focussing him for 7+ exam for Dulwich Prep School. Harry has traits of both dyslexia and dyspraxia.

7+ - I work with Jules on his English. Jules is French and has just started attending a French school, so we are working to keep his English up to scratch. Main areas of focus are: speaking, spelling, listening/understanding and grammar.

11+ - Working with Guy on English and Maths one day a week. Mainly focussed on Guy's writing and spelling. Guy is preparing for entry to Westminster and Eton Schools.

11+ - I worked with Ingrid on English and Maths in preparation for exams for Notting Hill and Ealing High School, Francis Holland and Godolphin and Latymer Schools. Ingrid went to her first choice of Notting Hill and Ealing High.

11+ - I worked with Olivia in preparation for her Common Entrance exams on all papers (English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as well as interview practice. Olivia is now attending North London Collegiate School (her first choice) but I also prepared her for entrance to Highgate School for Girls, City of London School for Girls and Queen's College.

Primary Help - I worked with brothers Teddy (7) and Alfie (10) mainly on English and Maths but also across all subjects generally to improve knowledge, confidence, spelling and vocabulary.

Primary Help - I worked with Rohan (10) on improving his confidence and basic skills in English and Maths. Rohan was very inquisitive and keen but needed help focussing and answering the specific questions that he was being asked.

A Level English Literature (AQA) - worked with Oliver (17) helping with coursework on The Great Gatsby and the poetry of Keats and Larkin. Oliver achieved an A grade.

AS Level Drama (AQA) - helped Yasmin to explore the analysis of texts of Lady Windermere's Fan and A View From The Bridge in preparation for exams, in which she achieved an A.

GCSE English Literature - tutored Amy in preparation for coursework and exams. Texts: Lord of The Flies and A View From The Bridge.

SKYPE - I teach Pietro (11) English as a Second Language weekly online.

Home Schooling - Inigo (6 when I started) had been getting reports of generally dropping behind in class work with a lack of concentration. I homeschooled him every Friday for two terms. He was having particular trouble in English and Maths. Inigo was struggling especially with English, in all areas, and was most behind with Spelling and Grammar. For him to engage, I had to be both creative (to keep him interested) but also quick as the plan was to get him into Kew Green Primary for the next academic year. We covered the basics of year 1 and ironed out any problems (also to give him confidence with the things he could do) and then went onto year 2. I would use a lot of what he was naturally interested in (football and particular comic book characters) in the teaching to keep his attention. With Maths, Inigo could do simple addition and subtraction but struggled when getting into 2 digits, multiplication, or any sort of wordy problem where the sum to be done was not absolutely clear. So, again, we covered the basics and then pushed on. He worked really hard and eventually we were looking forward to things he may encounter next year. At first Inigo was quite reluctant to work but I managed to win him over and build up a good rapport for productive days of homeschooling. Thankfully, he gained a place at Kew Green, and we were delighted! (Though it did mean, unfortunately, that he didn't need me any more...).

English for Foreign Learners - Helped 8 year old Augustinos (Greek) with reading and homework to improve English, as well as taking him on educational trips around London.

Drama (practical) - Coached Emily (21) and Hannah (20) with acting lessons in preparation for Drama School Entry auditions. Emily has now trained at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Hannah is training at LAMDA.

Voice and Elocution - Helped Law Student Amar (20) with speechmaking and projection for use in debating.

SEN - worked with Dean (20), a law student with dyslexia, upon exam preparation and practice.

Tutoring Approach:

I will tailor whatever I teach to my pupil's needs. I am very easy to get along with and very open to how you think you or your child will best learn. Above all I would want a pupil to look forward to my sessions with them so will make sure that they are practical, interesting and varied. Especially with the younger students I teach I think that lessons need to be fun to keep them excited about learning! I believe that I have developed a personal, individual style when it comes to tutoring. I consider the tutor-student relationship to be of utmost importance. If a student feels confident and relaxed with his or her tutor then the learning experience is that much easier. Private tutoring allows the tutor to develop a course which is tailor-made for the student's needs. I always try to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible, by introducing a wide variety of material in every lesson, as opposed to just sticking to a text book which can well become boring and unproductive. Academic experience: I have worked in private tutoring, state and private schools, university departments and know how examiners mark and what they expect. I have been a teacher for more than thirty years. I was a university lecturer and private tutor in Hungary and I continued teaching as a tutor when I came to England. I am passionate about teaching; helping pupils improve is very important to me.

Teaching Experience:

A few years ago I was teaching drama at different levels, as well as English literature and language. I started teaching Maths for younger children when I came to England. I also marked theses in Literature as a lecturer and advised students on writing papers in Literature. I taught several courses; for example, Essay writing, Language skills, Communication skills and Drama and Theatre. I based my drama lessons on my experiences as a Fulbright scholar at the Drama Department at the University of Oregon, USA.
I am especially enthusiastic about helping students with their essays; teaching them how to find focus and express their ideas precisely and coherently; organise and proofread their work; how to write a good introduction and conclusion.
Pupils I have taught have been admitted to Wolverhampton Girls' High School, Wolverhampton Grammar School and Chase Academy.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an extremely patient teacher. I have helped children and adults of different ages to achieve their goals. In my opinion anyone can improve; the teacher's role is essential in the process. At university I assist in undergraduate problems classes to assist the lectures in answering questions from the students.

My name is Iona, I'm currently studying my HND in Acting and Theatre Performance at Edinburgh's Telford college and hope to do my BA Hons degree next year. I've studied Theatre, Philosophy, Music, English, German and Spanish, and this year I am also touching on dance and vocal skills.

Teaching Experience:

I've done a JCSLA course whereupon I learnt how to teach and work with young people in a learning environment. My placement involved me doing an hour a week of teaching dance in a local primary school, where I learned how to interact with the children and work with them to incorporate their ideas and get the best results we could.
In my HNC course last year I had classes in how to run a drama workshop, and I've experienced hands on many youth theatre workshops and had lots of practice in drama games and exercises.
Last year I also tutored a student through Higher (AS Level) Philosophy.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm a very friendly girl and I like to make the learning environment as relaxed as possible, as I think this produces the best ideas. I'm quite interactive and hands on, and I like to use a lot of the student's own ideas and develop these, rather than spoon-feeding them, as I think in creative subjects, students flourish more with their own originality than with forced direction.
I don't set a lot of home-study as I appreciate students will already be receiving a lot, but there may be materials I will ask them to look over or read.

Personal Description:
I am a young spanish guy living in London, i came to this city to improve my English because im studying to be a teacher (English specialty). Its a 4 years degree in the International University of La Rioja (Spain) and i complement my studies working part-time in a famous clothing store.
Five years ago i finished my Economics degree (4 years) in University of La Corua (Spain) and also i did a course about Stock Market Analysis in University of La Corua. I received a State scholarship to work in an Italian international company, where i had the chance to learn Italian as well. I did an Italian course in the Tourism School of Rimini (Italy).
I decided to star my teacher degree and change my personal career because i feel that its my vocation, i love to learn about everything and have the chance to pass on my knowledge to others. Its something really pleasant.
As additional information i can say that im a quite person, very patient and i love the sports, im a sportsmen and i did the course to be a monitor leisure activities which has given me the opportunity to deal with many children and teach them so many different activities such as: Archery,kayak, canoeing and rowing...
Other information of interest is that i was football coach during 6 years in a Spanish football team, dealing with children between 5 and 12 years old. It was a good experience to learn how i can motivate the children to achieve their objectives.

Lana was born in Russia. In 1987 she graduated from the School of Art where she studied Monumental Art. Her works include a number of murals which are still to be seen in many cities of the former USSR. In 1991 she graduated from the Moscow Pedagogical University of Lenin where she studied Arts and Crafts.
In 1990, Lana made the decision to return to working in Ceramics. She soon realized that working with Ceramics provided the best opportunities for exhibiting her talent and creativity. From 1994 to 2000 she worked as an artist and tutor in the studio of Lyudmila Azarova, a famous Russian sculptor. Later on Lana opened her own porcelain studio where she taught Art&Crafts and created her first big porcelain collection "the City". In 2012 she moved to England and lives now in Ramsgate.
In the last few years Lana has been able to devote her time to work as a full time Artist creating watercolour paintings and porcelain.
Her works are in private collections across the world including the UK, Russia, Australia, USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Israel, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland and Ireland.

I am a graduate of the English Department at the University of Hull, and I have a PGCE from Leeds Metropolitan University. I have written various academic articles for publication, and I also develop learning programmes which combine the English curriculum with the exploration of local history, events and places. I am currently working on a documentary about Charles Dickens's visits to Hull, and have written a play abput the same subject.

I am a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE. I have an Honours degree in English and a Masters with a Distinction in English, I am also working on a doctorate (Phd) in my subject. I have worked in education for more than twelve years. I also offer tutring in Media Studies and Religious Studies, as well as assisteance with literacy, including reading and writing. However, I am not qualified to teach English as a foreign language.

I can teach students from Year Five to degree level. I have taught in schools and in the English Department at the University of Hull. I have also been a marker for English GCSE exam papers. I currently work as a tutor to students taking A' Level and GCSE English. I have had 100% pass rate for both, with students gaining Grade C and upwards.

I work with dyslexic students, and those who are on the autism spectrum. I also work with students who are sitting the English Skills tests for their PGCE. My students include adults, primary school children working towards SATs, GCSE and AS/A2 students, and students who need a general helping hand with their English, and with developing exam skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in a student-focused approach to tutoring. Each of my students is given an initial assessment and has an individual learning plan and is set targets. I am happy to repeat exercises and essays where necessary, and to go over information to ensure that the student understands concepts, ideas and exam requirements. I will set homework where necessary, but do not believe that this should interfere with schoolwork, or be excessive and burdensome.
I also believe that regular assessments and tests are essential to ensure that the student is maintaining a good standard of work, and that they are on-target. I am also a firm believer that encouragement and praise should be cornerstones of good teaching.

Teaching Experience:

20 years
I was called over by the government of India in 1996, after graduating from Central Saint Martins, as troubleshooter for their new Art/Fashion College to encountering 'teething issues'. Then worked at Auckland Insitute of Technology , Art& Fadhion dept. Did my Masters in 2000, worked in New Forest with A level Art & Fadhion ( highest grades they had ever had) introduced foundation, 7 out of 10 students awarded Distictions in first year. Head hunted by Shoreditch Fashion department in 2004. Left in 2012. Wrote up my own curriculum and have set up my own summer school in Beijing.

Personal Description:
I have over six years of teaching experience across a broad range of subjects in literature, film and media studies, art and history. I am friendly, professional and passionate about my subjects and I believe in encouraging my students to access their enthusiasm about these subjects in order to unlock their potential. I have experience writing and coordinating my own courses in the areas of film studies and art history. I also have a record of academic excellence: I have a first class BA honours in English literature, an MA in literature and philosophy (Distinction) and a PhD in literature and history. I have published my own research into literature and film. I am a practicing artist.

Teaching Experience:

I have over six years experience teaching at university across a wide range of subjects in English literature, critical theory/philosophy and film and media studies. I have written and taught an Art History course on the relationship between Art and Revolution at the Cornerhouse (Home). I also have substantial experience tutoring at GCSE and A level. I have experience helping students with their reading practices, assignment preparation and preparing for exams. I have substantial experience offering proof-reading and assignment and dissertation support to undergraduate and postgraduate degree students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in an active and student-centred approach to learning whereby I provide the support and expertise that enables my students to play a central role in their own learning and development. My approach is to draw out my students' interest in their subject in order to develop their confidence and ability to engage academically in the most effective way.

It is important when teaching to develop this enthusiasm within the structure of the particular syllabus or course outline - I encourage my students to understand and respond to what is being asked of them, whether it be for an assignment, presentation or exam. I also aim to develop my students' ability to respond to and structure ideas and arguments in a logical and clear way. I endeavour to make my teaching engaging and interactive, incorporating diverse and innovative approaches to ensure active and enthusiastic student participation.
