I have a Ph.D in English literature so I am happy to tutor up to postgraduate level. I am a qualified nurse, with experience in general nursing, children's nursing, and adult nursing. I was then employed by the Disabilities Trust to work in acquired brain injury -- this opened up my field to mental health and learning disability.

In the meantime I studied my passion -- English Literature. This lead from a First Class Honours to a Masters, then a Ph.D at Newcastle University. Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, warm and down-to-earth. My tuition is very much led by the student's individual needs. We start with some of your coursework so that I can get to know the syllabus and find out what your strengths are. Then we look for the hot spots that are causing you difficulty, and work through these until you feel more confident with them.

It is important that we work in a way where both of us participate -- the last thing I want is for a student to have to sit and listen to me for an hour. That rarely helps anyone!

I must charge the full amount for any sessions missed with less than 24 hours notice.

Hi,

As a mother of two and in my career experience so far, I have learned to be patient, supportive and encouraging with children, young people and inexperienced, unconfident adults. I'm a warm, approachable person with a calm, unflappable demeanour and a good sense of humour. I have a BA (Hons) degree in English and Media and Communications Studies and an up-to-date DBS (CRB) check.

After over 10 years of working in television as a script editor, script reader and occasional writer, I moved onto work in schools, my most recent job being in a mixed secondary school as a Learning Support Assistant. My creative background means I have a strong emphasis on reading, writing and communication skills. While working at the BBC (EastEnders) in 2005, I was made redundant, and my husband and I decided to turn a negative experience into a positive one so we spent about six months travelling to places including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and India. We returned home when I became pregnant with our first daughter. For about two years I freelanced from home, writing and editing for a couple of travel websites and reading and reporting on scripts for an independent TV company.

Once I became a mother myself, my priorities changed and I gave up my television career to work with young people - something I find rewarding, challenging and inspiring on a daily basis. I feel great satisfaction in working with children and helping them to achieve all that they can be - I enjoy their company and find their enquiring minds and personal growth and development fascinating. Of course I work very well with adults too and currently tutor two writers; one published in Europe, the other an inspiring novelist.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring students ranging from Year 3 to 11+ preparation, from pre-GCSE and GCSE English support to A level Film and Media Studies. Some of my students have additional education needs relating to dyslexia and autism. I have successfully helped GCSE and A Level students to gain the grades they needed to develop their education further. My previous A Level students are now enjoying their university courses and my GCSE students are now studying A Levels and Further Education courses, as per their target. I also tutor adults, mostly in creative writing, and international students, in learning to speak and understand English.

At the moment I am teaching students from Year 3 through to A level stage, as well as two adults for creative writing. I am also teaching English to two French teenagers who are visiting for a week with their family, for the sole purpose of receiving English tuition.

I have worked and volunteered at five schools now, including one primary school and one first school. Most of my school experience has been working for the Support department, focusing on children with Special Educational Needs. Some of the pupils have behavioural issues or physical disabilities, but most of them have learning difficulties such as dyslexia, ADHD and autism. I worked with these children within the mainstream classroom environment, offering them encouragement and support and helping them to understand the teachers' instructions. I also occasionally worked on a one-to-one basis with them away from the classroom, helping them to focus without any distractions.
At the primary school, I supported Year 2 and Year 3 children with reading and DT. This was done on either a one-to-one basis, or in small groups. Currently, I volunteer once a week in a Reception class, where I help children with their reading.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer a calm, supportive approach and begin with assessing the student to see where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Then I tailor their sessions accordingly. I break up the sessions into different segments using fun activities where appropriate to help with their learning process. I believe that children should find learning stimulating and interactive, and not feel that they are just being 'talked at'. I am open to different types of teaching, and particularly with students who need extra support, I like to try to think 'outside of the box'.

My approach to teaching is fairly traditional but creative, I assess new pupil's current levels, then plan the next steps with them. I engage my pupils at all levels of their learning as I believe this encourages them to be learners. I praise and encourage my pupils for excellent work. however if a pupils struggles to understand a concept, I will find a way to explain the task so that my pupils does understand and can achieve, which in turn enables them to make progress. When earning my bachelor's degree, I had to focus with a main instrument (percussion) but was required to learn the basics for all the most common instruments in the brass, woodwind and string families, as well as learning basic guitar and keyboard skills.

I have worked specifically with students identified with special needs for almost seven years, four years in England at a special needs high school in Harrow and nearly three years in a co-teaching environment in a primary school in the US. Additional supports such as building on fundamental language skills, mathematics essentials like money management or telling time, general life skills, independent learning skills and social skills are some of the areas with which I would be happy to help. I have previously worked with students identified as having mild, moderate and severe learning difficulties, emotional, behavioural and social difficulties, visual impairments, hearing impairments, physical disabilities, developmental delays, traumatic brain injuries, limited speaking ability or non-verbal forms of communication, and students on the autism spectrum, as well as students with other conditions.

Tutoring Approach:

I find both teaching and learning to be exciting, fun and enriching, and my passion for my subjects helps my students to get joy out of learning too. My attitude towards learning is to make lessons as interesting, engaging and relevant to my students as I can.
