Personal Description:
I am a caring and patient teacher . I develop good relationships with my pupils and care about their general well being. I adapt teaching aproaches to suit individual pupils to enable them to engage with the learning in a postive and supportive way. Children say they like my lessons and enjoy being tutored by me.
If you home school your child I can provide tutoring of a specific subject area fit around your timetable and the way your child prefers to learn.
I am also a parent of boys with SEN,(dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and adhd) and have a good knowledge of special education needs and the impact of these on teaching, learning and home life.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 5 years in the primary age range and really enjoy it. I have been privately tutoring for 6 years covering both all literacy areas and maths. I have up-to-date training in the new grammar, spelling and punctuation KS2 SAT's paper. In the area of spelling, I have current experience in the synthetic phonics approach. I have used this from the beginning stages in year 1, and also adapted teaching with the support of practical materials to pupils in KS2.
I can provide references from parents of current pupils.

I am able to support your child through the transition into secondary school, providing practical ideas to get ready and support during the first term to enable them to remain positive about their potential as a learner. I can also help advise on issues arising from difficulties in personal organisation from moving around the school to coping with having the right things in their bag on a daily basis.

I can tutor pupils through secondary education in English and English literature. I can support those who are experiencing dyslexic issues and need some support with homework.

Tutoring Approach:

I treat each child as an individual taking into account both parents and the pupils views and needs. I provide suport to catch up on missed areas of basic skills, which is delaying learning, as well as being able to support targets set by school for the pupils individual progress. Through an initial consultation I seek to find out what the needs are and, with parents and pupil, plan suitable help to reach their goals. I share objectives with parents and pupils and give regular feed back to both to reach those goals. I belive it is important for all to see progress is being made. With parents and pupils permission, I like to make contact with their teacher to work with class teacher in identifing areas of difficulty and planning appropriate support. I find that this approach give the maximum benefit for all concerned.
The greatest difference I make to my pupils is to increase their confidence which in turn enables them to be more willing to take part in whole class sessions at school. Teachers of at least 2 of my pupils have remarked on the difference in attitude of the pupils who I have tutored.

Personal Description:
I have tutored Maths, English and Special Needs now for five years, building up a rapport with each individual and their family to ensure best results. My tutoring experience spans from children aged 4 years to adults aged 44 years, with varying degrees of motivation, interest and abilities.

Due to my high interest in supporting others, I chose a career path as a Speech and Language Therapist, and I qualified in this esteemed profession 3 years ago. On a daily basis I work with children from pre-school age right up to young adults, in a range of settings from special needs schools and mainstream schools, to community clinics and home visits. I am highly passionate about helping all I support to work together to reach their potential.

I am a genuinely caring and generous person and I am more than capable of sharing my passion for Maths and English to anyone I work with, including those with additional needs.

Teaching Experience:

Through my job as a Speech and Language Therapist I work with children of all cognitive abilities on a one-to-one level to improve their communication and language skills. The work I do coincides with the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage, and I work with parents and teachers to set individualised targets, which is similar to the tutoring world.

Prior to commencing my current job I worked as a special needs assistant at a primary school. On a daily basis I was required to give additional support on a one-to-one basis to children who struggled in the (often) large classroom, by working through the literacy or numeracy curriculum at their own pace. I was also relied upon to support in assigned classrooms through supervising children while working on a task or taking groups of children for reading. Working in a school ensured that I keep current my knowledge of Educational and National Curriculum issues.

From June-August 2011, I travelled to Pennsylvania, USA, to work as a Speech and Language Therapist at a summer camp for children with special needs (age range 7-20). I was recommended for this job due to my extensive experience and my friendly positive nature. The experience of living and working with children and teens with individual needs and accompanying challenging behaviours highlighted the importance of taking a flexible holistic approach when assessing skills, implementing support and evaluating improvements.

In June 2009, I participated in the Student Associate Scheme organised by the University of Manchester. This involved intensive teacher training and then carrying out a block placement of three weeks within two schools teaching and assisting in core subjects e.g. Mathematics and English. I worked with two children in particular who struggled and I helped improve their numeracy and literacy skills by adapting their learning technique to suit their individual needs.

Tutoring Approach:

For five years I have tutored Maths, English and Special Needs in three areas of the UK, including two major cities. I have assisted students of varying ages, abilities and additional needs including Dyslexia, Autism and Specific Language Impairment - from early years pupils to mature students. I find that tutees benefit from the one-to-one focus they are given, and the individualised plans we work from enforces enhancement of their current knowledge in their chosen subject areas.

I always ensure a person-centred approach is achieved when tutoring. Each tutee learns through different techniques and at different speeds so I develop my tutoring level and scope to suit the individuals needs. I tutored three children for 2013's 'Transfer Test' (Northern Ireland's Grammar School intake assessment) and the results confirmed that this approach is effective, as all sitting the demanding test passed with flying colours, with two getting into Northern Ireland's top Grammar School.

Personal Description:
I have a Ph.D in English literature so I am happy to tutor up to postgraduate level. I am a qualified nurse, with experience in general nursing, children's nursing, and adult nursing. I was then employed by the Disabilities Trust to work in acquired brain injury -- this opened up my field to mental health and learning disability.

In the meantime I studied my passion -- English Literature. This lead from a First Class Honours to a Masters, then a Ph.D at Newcastle University. I have taught English and drama to a variety of student ages and abilities, and my background in nursing gives me a different kind of approachable, 'can do' teaching style.

Teaching Experience:

Newcastle University -- Tuition of English Literature and Film Studies at Degree Level.

Creative Writing -- tuition to people with mental health problems and those who had recovered from illess.

Tuition to 11 - 14 year olds in Tipperary, Ireland.

Reading and writing skills with the Disabilities Trust in York.

KS1, KS2, GCSE, AS Level, Degree Level tuition at HMP Frankland, Co. Durham, (in a challenging male setting of mixed abilities)

Newcastle University -- Tuition of English Literature and Film Studies at Degree Level.

Creative Writing -- tuition to people with mental health problems and those who had recovered from illess.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, warm and down-to-earth. My tuition is very much led by the student's individual needs. We start with some of your coursework so that I can get to know the syllabus and find out what your strengths are. Then we look for the hot spots that are causing you difficulty, and work through these until you feel more confident with them.

It is important that we work in a way where both of us participate -- the last thing I want is for a student to have to sit and listen to me for an hour. That rarely helps anyone!

I must charge the full amount for any sessions missed with less than 24 hours notice.

Personal Description:
I live in Crawley, West Sussex and have worked in social care since completing my BA(hons) in 2000. I have worked with many different client groups of all ages, spending the last few years in a training role. I am a foster carer to an older teenager and I am just about to start working as a lecturer at a local college.

I am a positive, approachable person who will work hard to help you (and your child) to succeed.

I have just re-read my profile and feel that it makes me sound a little stuffy! I think it contains all of the information a parent/ potential student needs to know but I just want to add that I have a great sense of humour, I love being around children/ people who want to learn, am reliable and a great time keeper.

* I currently have some additional vacancies on a Saturday and weekday evenings*

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a learning support assistant in adult education classes and have completed the introductory to teaching qualification (PTTLS) and the PGCE. I am working in a FE college in Surrey, teaching across levels 1 - 3. I have recently tutored children in literacy and numeracy (KS1 & KS2). I have delivered training to adults with mental health difficulties, adults and children with learning disabilities, trainee teachers, college students and staff who work in social care. I have done this in group settings and on a 1:1 basis. I have also spent time working with the foster children who have been placed with me to improve their academic achievements, in particular, with their reading and writing skills.

I have been graded as 'outstanding' in a recent teaching observation - Dec 2013 and am happy to provide evidence of this

Tutoring Approach:

Learning needs to be fun! I strive to make sessions enjoyable, memorable and interactive because I feel that this is the best way to learn. I like to use different learning methods in my approach and will regularly carry out assessment to monitor progress. Regular progress reports on will be available to you because it is important that you know how well you (or your child) are doing and any areas that need to be focused upon.

Sessions will be individually planned and delivered so best to meet your aims and aspirations. Depending on age and ability, I think it is important that students take responsibility for their own learning and I like to set independent work to be completed at home.

When working with children, I prefer to do this in their own home.

I am currently working in the RH1 area and am happy to provide travel in this and surrounding areas during the week. I am also happy to travel further afield for a booking of 3 hours or more. Please contact me should you require any further information

Personal Description:
I have enjoyed working with children in teaching and pastoral roles for more than seven years. I have completed Level 2 and Level 3 certificates in counselling training, and I am currently working towards my Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling; as a result I have developed valuable listening skills. My other interests include patchwork sewing and baking. I have a calm and gentle approach, and I have a proven ability to make children feel at ease when working with me.

Teaching Experience:

I have seven years experience of working in primary schools across all age-ranges. My various roles have included teaching: all subjects in whole class groups; extra basic skills support in small groups; and one-to-one phonics and spellings lessons. I have helped children to achieve excellent progress in all my roles.

In my experience as a private tutor for almost four years, I have tutored children between the ages of six and eleven, including preparation for SATs and eleven plus tests. I have excellent references which highlight children's significant progress and increased confidence since working with me.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor tutoring to the individual child, focusing on their strengths and preferred learning styles. I use games to reinforce concepts while making learning enjoyable. I offer rewards, such as stickers and certificates, to motivate and recognise children's achievements. All my lessons are thoroughly planned and prepared, and regular assessment informs planning for later lessons.

Targets are set at an initial meeting and are reviewed on a termly basis, when new targets may be set. A written report is given to parents and carers at the end of each term. Reductions in fees are offered if you are able to pay for a block of lessons in advance.

Personal Description:
I am a practising artist working primarily in ceramics from my studio in Eastbourne. Currently, my main work is my own ceramics and art, but I am passionate about my subject and wish to share my skills with others. My skills are quite broad and a stint in an art library means I have good contextual knowledge. I love teaching ceramics and sculpture and some easy low tech printmaking. I am able to offer teaching in your home or in my studio, depending on which is most appropriate.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified teacher with over twenty years of teaching experience to a wide range of students. I am experienced in teaching art at GCSE level and to adult students. I have run courses in ceramics, photography, and printmaking and am experienced in teaching painting and drawing as well. In the last few years I have been teaching art to students with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and Aspergers gaining 100% A* to C GCSE passes.

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly, I would find out what your needs are and how I could meet those needs with my tuition. A series of lessons can be devised to meet those needs and personal progress will be reviewed on a week by week basis. This might be that you need to improve drawing skills to succeed or improve a grade at GCSE. A younger child might want to learn about painting and using colour, light and shape. You might be an adult wishing to learn how to make some fabulous pottery. For those with additional needs it might be finding ways to realise their visual ideas and develop confidence and understanding. I encourage, support and offer practical advice, skills and solutions.

Personal Description:
I am a registered Speech and Language Therapist and have been practising since 2011. I also hold a BA in Linguistics and a TESOL/TEFL Certificate to Teach English as a Second/Foreign Language.

I am a mother of a 10 week old daughter and so I love spending time with her when I can. I love music, reading, going outdoors, and exploring England.

I currently volunteer for the National Autistic Society (NAS) to help with fundraising and providing family support.

Teaching Experience:

I work with children with a variety of special needs, both pre-school and school age, including Autism, Dyspraxia, Global delay, speech/language delay and disorder, language impairment and dyslexia.

I have been doing TEFL with both children and adults, beginner to advanced since 2008.

I have been tutoring English Literature GCSE since 2012. I am familiar with WJEC, AQA and Edexcel examination boards and have achieved A* grades with my students.

My ability to equip a student for studying comes from my longstanding experience as a student myself. Therefore, I am more than qualified to support such students both virtually and face to face. I currently mentor a Speech therapy student via Skype.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is person centred, giving the student some control of what activities they do. Lessons are designed around the individual's motivators, and so time is spent identifying these. My approach is about empowering the student and helping them to recognise that literacy and communication is FUN!

I work collaboratively with parents/carers and professionals involved with the child. If I'm working with adults, I will set a block of therapy or a teaching programme with the student so that goals are individual to you and your needs.

I believe language is 24/7 and so learning a language or therapy is not just achieved through the teacher/therapist but also with every other person that you come into contact with. Therefore, it is vital to practise language when I am not there.

Personal Description:
I am currently a part-time Lecturer and Academic Writing Tutor at the University of Warwick, where I teach Romantic and Victorian Poetry, English and French Romanticism, Literary Theory and Study Skills / Academic Writing Skills. I am the author of Dialogue, Didacticism and the Genres of Dispute: Literary Dialogues in an Age of Revolution (London: Pickering & Chatto), which uncovers the neglected role and significance of genre in Romantic Studies, I have published numerous academic journal articles and I am a regular contributor to The English Review, the UK's leading English subject magazine for AS / A2 English students. I have a particular interest in dyslexia and teaching and learning strategies for dyslexic students (I am dyslexic myself and was educated in accordance with the Morpheme and Unisensory approach pioneered at Maples Hayes School and Research Centre, where I was formally a pupil and Deputy Head Boy). I also run a successful academic proofreading service as a further means of supplementing my income...

Teaching Experience:

I have over 6 years of teaching experience at the University of Warwick and have been providing private tuition for over 3 years. During 'A' level resits in January 2013, my cohort of tutees all achieved grade 'A's or A * having previously attained Cs, Ds or even Es. These results have been repeated this year (June 2014) and all of my private students have attained grades A or A* in their coursework and a mixture of As, Bs and Cs in exams and resists in which they previously got Es and even Us prior to receiving private tuition. All of my students have subsequently secured places at their first choice universities having received outstanding 'A' level results. I have taught in a variety of formats including large group lectures, seminars and one-to-one tutorials. I have also delivered a great deal of individualized study skills sessions for students, including those for whom English is a second language. I have also undertaken numerous courses through the University of Warwick's Learning and Development Centre and the internationally renowned Centre for Creativity and Performance in Teaching and Learning (CAPITAL). I have studied for and obtained the university's teaching qualification for Higher Education (Postgraduate Award: Academic and Professional Practice) and I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, member of the Institute for Professional Tutors and member of The Tutors' Association. I also hold a City & Guilds 7302 Certificate in Delivering Learning, so potential tutees / parents can be assured that I have both the experience and qualifications to deliver first class, highly individualized learning across a wide variety of levels from GCSE to postgraduates.

Tutoring Approach:

As a dyslexic myself my teaching philosophy centres around the needs of each individual student rather than attempting to adopt a 'one size fits all' mentality. I see each students needs and learning styles as being unique, and I adopt my tutoring styles accordingly. More generally, however, I am an ardent believer in keeping things as simple and informal as possible, and I pay particular attention to the careful, logical, methodical sequencing of ideas in order to structure learning, revision and knowledge retention in the most productive and readily assimilated manner possible - a strategy which has derived in part from my own research into dyslexia. I am approachable, very friendly, innovative, flexible and informal, so students who perhaps feel let down by the mainstream education system would particularly benefit from my approach.
I ALWAYS arrange to see students for an initial meeting once contact details have been exchanged in order to fully explore what the student / parents are aiming to gain from private tutoring and to discuss what approaches, learning styles and support is required. #THIS IS A FREE MEETING WHICH I OFFER ALL OF MY PROSPECTIVE TUTEES#

Please note that unlike some tutors, I am a SPECIALIST IN ENGLISH LITERATURE, LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC WRITING ONLY - I DO NOT BELIEVE IN TRYING TO OFFER MORE SUBJECTS AS A MEANS OF MAXIMIZING INCOME!

Personal Description:
I recently completed my PhD in History of Art at University College London (UCL). I have published my research in a number of academic journals and edited book collections, and I am a practicing artist, currently based in Hulme, Manchester.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully trained secondary school teacher, specialising in Art & Design and Photography at KS3, KS4 & KS5. I have 8 years teaching experience, including working as a specialist Learning Support Teacher, and in Special Needs schools catering for children and young adults with a range of special educational needs, from moderate learning difficulties to profound and multiple disabilities.

I have particular expertise in studio practice (art and design), digital and darkroom photography (theory, history and practice), literacy, social and vocational skills, as well as History of Art, Anthropology and History of Medicine at undergraduate level.

I am also experienced in teaching at undergraduate level, having taught gallery-based first year History of Art courses, for University College London's History of Art Department. I am also currently teaching part time at the University of Manchester on the History of Art degree programme.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a one-to-one, flexible approach to learning and teaching, which first establishes the needs and goals of the student, and then sets out clearly structured strategies for achieving these goals. These may be results-focused when preparing for exams, or aimed at developing a broader understanding of a subject area, depending upon the student's own priorities. I am happy to work with any course materials the student may provide, and I am familiar with all current GCSE and A Level syllabuses. I am able to guide both GCSE and A Level students through their studies, offering consistent, dedicated 1-2-1 tuition for the full term of the course. I can also provide practical tuition for students who are preparing their art portfolios for University submission.

Tutoring may take place at the student's home, or at my art studio in central Manchester, where I can provide a range of art materials and resources by prior arrangement, for more intensive practical art sessions. Please note that I can travel within 20 miles of central Manchester based on the fee structure quoted below, travelling further will incur a small additional fuel fee.

I have had recent successes with my private students, one of whom attended one-to-one sessions at my Manchester studio for 8 weeks and improved her predicted GCSE Art result of a B by two grades, achieving an A* in her final art exam. My most recent undergraduate student also attained a First overall in her History of Art degree, achieving a high score of 78 on her dissertation project, with intensive tutorial support conducted via Skype.

*Please note that due to the time-intensive nature of undergraduate level tutoring, I am only able to take on a maximum of three undergraduate tutees at any given time. Please see below for my current availability for tutoring at this level.*

I am currently tutoring ONE undergraduate student.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS:

"I wanted a tutor to give me help and advice on my undergraduate history of art dissertation. I needed reassurance that what I was writing was okay and some one to proof read and give me their opinion on my arguments. Gemma was brilliant, she gave me the confidence that I needed to keep going with my dissertation by reassuring me that I was on the right track. She discussed my ideas with me in detail, proof read all of my work and suggested and sourced articles that I might want to have a look at. I have recently graduated from Newcastle University with a First in History of Art and Media and I know that I owe Gemma a huge thank you for the support she gave me on the way to achieving this."

- Celandine, Newcastle.

Personal Description:
I am a Shakespeare fanatic with six years' classroom experience. I enjoy reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction and became a teacher to share my passion for language. Now that I have a young family, I have decided to indulge my love of teaching outside the classroom to fit around raising my children. I keep in touch with my former colleagues to stay abreast of the rapidly developing education system.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in Grammar schools in Kent, outer-London schools and a wide variety of institutions in Hong Kong. My subject knowledge covers English, Drama and Theatre Studies, and Classical Civilisation (the latter subjects are very useful for approaching English texts in innovative ways). I am most familiar with the new GCSE specification for AQA, but can happily adapt to other exam boards. I am a GCSE English Literature examiner for some boards also. I have experience tutoring 11-18 year olds and have worked with students with a variety of special needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I create personalised programmes to fit the needs of individual students and frequently adapt these to incorporate new texts and resources to keep the lessons fresh and relevant. My sessions tend to focus on assessment technique and start with short focused activities, building the skills necessary to complete longer written tasks designed to mimic the conditions of examinations. Alternatively, I can support students with their class work more directly, assisting with homework and helping with clarity of expression in other subjects too.

I aim for students to enjoy our sessions and feel comfortable asking questions; my main goal is to help them improve and I can only do that through honest discussion of issues. I do expect high standards and find that my pupils meet my expectations and gain grades they are proud of, when they apply themselves. Confidence is the key to learning and it is in this area that my students make the swiftest progress, which enables them to access the top grades and enjoy their increasing capability in a subject that at first seemed inaccessible.

For adult learners, I offer programmes that reflect each individuals' interests in language development and present activities in a variety of ways to keep lessons lively and relevant. I find that striking the balance between grammatical accuracy and colloquial usage allows second language students to feel much more confident interacting with native speakers.

I like to have a good rapport with tutees' parents as I feel that learning is a joint initiative. Testimonials from former clients are available upon request. My fee includes all resources (apart from set texts) and the loan of study guides and other useful materials as required.

Personal Description:
I am a warm, friendly and outgoing person with an excellent ability to build a rapport with my students. I love languages and am passionate in particular about English. I speak Welsh to a good level as well as some Spanish and French. I love literature and drama and am adept at finding new and unique pieces and quite often construct my own writing. I love working with children and find great joy in helping them to succeed and achieve their goals. I find working with children is exciting and no 2 days are the same. Mainly I love working with children because I often find that they teach me as much as I teach them!

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced tutor with a history of achieving results. I am a qualified primary teacher with experience of tutoring in KS2 and KS3. I have experience tutoring children who are looked after by the local authority, children who have additional learning needs and children who are gifted and require further stretch and challenge. I have several summer's experience teaching at English summer schools for children from France or Spain and as a result my technical knowledge of English language is excellent.

I also have experience of teaching small classes of adults and am able to adapt my teaching and lessons to suit a more adult approach.

Prior to teaching I worked as a supply TA as a range of local schools and as a result have a wealth of experience with all kinds of children.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring in one word is fun. As a teacher I know how hard children work in school and therefore understand that any extra sessions need to be fun and active to keep their attention. I always do an introductory session where the tutee and I simply get to know each other through fun activities. I then use this information to personally tailor the sessions to the needs and interests of that person. I find this helps to engage even the most reluctant learners and enables them to get to grips with the material.

Personal Description:
I am an avid musician and educationalist, with a passion for sharing my interests in music and learning with children and young adults. As a parent and trained Teacher, I can see from different perspectives the different aspects of learning in life, and am keen to foster a love of learning whenever I am involved with a child or young person.

Teaching Experience:

I have 7 years experience working in a Special Needs school working across the 11-19 age range primarily, with much crossover into Primary and Early Years. When my children were at nursery I worked closely with the team to develop their behaviour management and early communication skills, giving me a different range of experiences to call upon. I have also taught private music lessons with great client satisfaction for over 10 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I am experienced in adapting my approach to delivery depending on context, having worked in classrooms, with learner orchestras, and in 1:1 settings. Fun and enjoyment should be central to a successful learning experience, and I try to ensure a relaxed approach in sessions facilitates this.
