| Personal Description: I have spent 8 years at university, completed two degrees (one of which with a Teacher-training profile) and various development courses, and have been meanwhile working to support myself financially. I have been employed as a paid English Language and Literature and ESOL Teacher and have done extensive voluntary community care of people from various cultures and backgrounds. I speak, read and write fluent English, Bulgarian and Russian and operate freely with Microsoft Packages and the Internet My tutoring experience across two cultures consisted of learners of various ages and educational needs - from students of English as a Foreign Language (adults) to preparation for GCSE examinations (Secondary school age) and basic literacy skills for Primary school children. I have proved to be very efficient on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, always searching to find the individual approach to each student, seeking to meet their needs and interests. Some of my students successfully passed their GCSE exams, others moved up with one level in their acquisition of English. All of my primary or secondary school pupils noted progress within the area they struggled with and some moved up to 'top' groups in their respective school classes. I am friendly and approachable and children quickly warm to me and feel they can trust me and share their problems with me. I respect each child's individual strengths. I provide for their individual needs. I find a personal approach to each child, as I recognise that their learning styles and interests differ. I have already been tutoring privately for 14 years (across two countries) and have only had positive comments from appreciative parents and students. I enjoy tutoring adults as well. I have taught ESOL, Bulgarian and Russian to adult students. Presently I am employed full-time as a Lecturer of ESOL to adults at Birmingham Metropolitan College but I continue to tutor privately. I have a son of 4 years, who is presently attending nursery in Rubery. During my teaching, tutoring and voluntary community care duties I worked closely with people with various problems and needs. This has helped me develop excellent communication and problem solving skills, as well as openness and confidence. Meeting those people's different needs has also taught me to show flexibility and quickly and independently seek solutions to challenges even in unfamiliar circumstances. I successfully find an individual approach to relate to everyone. Both as a teacher and community carer I have been described as 'friendly, tolerant', 'a good communicator', and a person of punctuality, reliability and 'excellent professionalism'. For the last 4 years I have mainly tutored clients, forwarded to me by the agency Personal Tutors but now I wish to extend my experience. |
Teaching Experience: During my other wide experience of teaching I have been exposed to various aspects of the profession. While teaching English at a Secondary College in Bulgaria I had the chance to teach English literature more extensively, which deepened my knowledge of it. I also taught English at the equivalent of an A-level in the UK, successfully preparing students for university examinations. My lessons have been described as 'interesting and inspirational'. Teaching basic Literacy, Speaking and Listening skills and Creative Writing to adults in the UK broadened my experience even more. During my various tutoring duties in Bulgaria I worked with children and young adults of various ages and educational needs, which has further enriched my teaching practice and increased my flexibility in target setting. While employed by Harborne Hill School in Birmingham I taught English Key Stage 3 and 4 and was involved in the preparation of Year 10 for their GCSE exams. I am familiar with the British System of Secondary Education, as well as with the National Curriculum and the importance of teaching English across the curriculum. I contributed to creating schemes of work and various materials for the English department at Harborne Hill. I also widely used ICT in my lessons, as I am aware that it is very important for accelerating children's learning. All my groups had a regular weekly lesson in the ICT suite. My lesson preparation at Harborne Hill School was described as 'exemplary' and 'outstanding', the contents as 'interesting and stimulating', and my knowledge of the subject as 'excellent'. I widely and confidently used my own initiative to prepare creative activities to suit the children's needs and appeal to their imagination (working a youth leader at St Agnes church provided me with ideas for interesting activities). I was successful in trouble-shooting and behaviour management. I was able to quickly establish personal rapport with the pupils and find an individual approach to each one. I successfully motivated them to work and reach their potential when they were reluctant to do so. I was responsible for creating individual educational plans for the SEN children and individually monitor their progress. My background interest and extensive reading in Child Psychology and Counselling helped me with this task. |
Tutoring Approach: First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees. Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her. Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress. During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a couple of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan for work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain help-book, I am happy to oblige. I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework. I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations. The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice. |

| Personal Description: I am 22 and I recently graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, where I achieved a first class honours degree in languages (Russian, Latin, Ukrainian). I'm from Manchester originally, where I went to the Manchester Grammar School. I'm currently working as a freelance literary translator and playwright in London. I speak fluent Russian, and I lived in Russia and Kyrgyzstan in 2008 as part of my degree. I also speak French (I have an A-level), Ukrainian and Kyrgyz. As a writer and playwright, I love literature, and would also be able to teach English Lit or History (my other A level). |
Teaching Experience: I taught Latin for a year in an inner city primary school in Manchester in 2005. I taught English at the Kitezh Children's Community in the Kaluga region of Russia (January-February 2008) |
Tutoring Approach: I'm generally very flexible, and would tailor my tutoring to the wants and needs of each specific tutee. In terms of languages I'm a great believer in learning through literature. It's an amazing insight into the culture as well as a greater booster for vocabulary. For beginners I'd use nursery rhymes, and the texts would increase in complexity according to the standard of the tutee. Homework for languages would normally be grammar-based exercises, which are the cornerstone of inflective languages like Russian or Latin. Conversation practice is, again, essential, but as I said earlier I'd be happy to work on whatever areas in which the tutee felt themselves to be weakest. |

| Personal Description: I am a student at the University of Leeds studying English and Russian in my third year of a four-year course. I am therefore based in Leeds in university term time and in London during university holidays. I am keen to teach because of my previous postitive experience of tutoring, and because I enjoy passing knowledge on to both children and adults and seeing progression and improvement in subjects over time. |
Teaching Experience: During my Year Abroad in Russia I taught a 9 year old Russian girl English for three hours a week over the year. I have also run Russian language lessons for small groups of adult and child beginners and assisted with Russian speaking classes at my school with AS Level students. I have also been able to teach many children, in groups and individually, to ice skate through several jobs as an ice rink steward. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that a tutor has a responsibility to tailor their teaching to the needs of each individual tutee, so my approach to tutoring would vary depending on what was required. I see the relationship between a tutor and tutee as very much give and take - both are required to contribute a high standard to a lesson. I enjoy teaching and being able to give and hone skills in others, as well as often being able to learn from the tutee themselves. |

| Personal Description: I am just starting university and enjoy teaching. My main hobby is learning languages. I have studied French and German at Alevel, Russian for GCSE and will be studying Mandarin Chinese at part of my degree. I also design websites in my spare time and now have a registered company which allows me to continue doing this. |
Teaching Experience: Tutored several students before in Maths and languages. |
Tutoring Approach: Straightforward, to the point approach. For maths, this involves doing exercises. For languages, a strong grammar based approach and analysis of texts to understand how the language is put together, then build from there with vocabulary. Basically, seeing the language in its real form - newspapers, magazines etc. For web design, looking at current websites and analysing how they are made up. Using different programs to do this. |

| Personal Description: I've been tutoring pupils for several years since graduating in 2005. This is one of the things that inspired me to take a PGCE course and become a fully qualified teacher. I hold A levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths (all at grade A). From this I know the best way to prepare for these exams and have the knowledge to help you succeed in them also. Although, I can tutor to a very advanced level, I have experience teaching all ages and abilities. For me it's clear that the people coming to me, need help and support with the subject....if everyone was a maths genius then tuition wouldn't exist! Martin |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as a full time teacher for 2 years, and currently work in south west London at a grammar school. This gives me an up to date knowledge of the work that needs to be covered for exams, and also a lot of time, interacting with children. |
Tutoring Approach: **I hold a full CRB certificate, this will be presented before I commence any tuition** I'll tailor my tuition to your ages and ability by spending out first 30 minutes seeing what you know. That way I will be able to provide you with direction and a plan of action for your studies. I'll also work alongside what you are studying at school, so we can reinforce that work, and clear up anything you don't understand. If that all sounds good then get in contact with me, and we can talk about the tuition you want. |

| Personal Description: I'm about to go into my final year at university in Sheffield. My degree is French and Russian and I've spent the last year living and studying in both France and Russia. Other than learning languages I enjoy playing and listening to music, reading, travelling and socialising. I'm friendly, approachable and hard-working. |
Teaching Experience: I spent 3 weeks working with secondary school pupils in June 2007 in Sheffield, mostly in the French department. I had to work with a variety of groups and abilities. I also did working experience in a primary school in November 2002. While I was living in France I spent a couple of hours a week teaching English to French school children. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is very much dependent on the tutee; I am more than happy to cater for their needs and learning styles and take my lead from them. |
