Personal Description:
I am a Research Student in the School of Social and Political Studies, University of Edinburgh with 5 years of teaching experience. I have a degree in Philosophy and am currently pursuing a PhD in Politics. As a Polish native speaker I can offer tuition in Polish.

Teaching Experience:

During the last year I have been working as a teaching assistant at University of Edinburgh. As part of that I offered training in reading skills (interpretation) as well as essay writing. Before that, I have taught both at University level as well as secondary and high school in Poland (both in Polish and English). For the last 2 two years I have also been working as a self-employed language teacher in English and Polish.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a positive but demanding approach to teaching. I believe that students can and should take responsibility for their development, and the role of the teacher is to direct them in this effort. In teaching languages aim to try a balanced approach between communicative activities and grammar. However, tutoring is all about individual approach. So I always work out the final programme depending on the needs of my students.

Personal Description:
I am a music graduate who has previously obtained an A grade at A level English.
I work now as a self-employed musician, peripatetic music teacher and graphic/web designer.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught flute at all levels and teach music (specifically folk based) at local primary schools. I have taught at various specialist summer schools across the UK and Ireland and at Newcastle University. As well as general music I specialise in folk/traditional and offer 1:1 tuition on flute, voice (folk) and guitar. I also work within computer graphics and have 15 years of computer/I.T. experience.

Tutoring Approach:

As I was largely self-taught I favour a fairly modern approach to learning. With music this tends to focus on learning aurally and building confidence (especially in performance) I am well versed in technical details of all of my subjects and am happy to verse my self fully in any syllabus before meeting pupils. I aim to teach this alongside more contemporary methods of learning.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying law at the University of Edinburgh as an undergraduate. I attended several different schools and so was exposed to many different types of teaching. I have been in both English and Scottish systems, although all of my examinations were taken in the Scottish system.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience includes a considerable amount of time spent mentoring and teaching younger pupils french during my final year at school, both as full classes, small groups and individuals. Primarily I dealt with first and second year pupils although I do have experience of providing assistance to pupils up to standard grade level. I believe that the skills used across the age groups I have taught before transfer easily and effectively to other age groups.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is that each child learns in a different way and hence dependant on the child the style in which to tutor them varies greatly.

However, I am a great believer in positive reinforcement and patience. In many cases encouragement and presenting information in a slightly different manner works miracles, enabling the child to suddenly see the connections as well as providing them with a valuable tool which can in future help them to work out difficulties themselves by employing similar techniques.

Even if the child has real difficulty with a specific area then simply being creative in the way you explain the material can make a difference. For example, appealing to all of their senses and capturing their full attention. Getting them involved with the process is key. Most importantly, however, is to try and make things fun and keep the atmosphere light and as pressure-free as possible, allowing them to process information and reach a conclusion with stress.

Personal Description:
I have just finished an undergraduate degree in French at Oxford University (Queen's College) (predicted a first) and I am taking a year out to earn money for further study. The degree not only gave me a comprehensive knowledge of French literature but also allowed me to spend a 7 months in France during which I became fluent in the language. I also spent a month in French-speaking Guadeloupe where I studied on an intensive language course and researched the Creole spoken there.

Teaching Experience:

I spent 7 months in France teaching secondary school students English. This involved teaching a wide range of ages and abilities in a class and on a one-to-one basis. I have also done voluntary work at a local youth centre and I am part of the Oxford university target schools program which works with secondary school students looking to apply for higher education. I am therefore confident working with young people from a variety of backgrounds.

Tutoring Approach:

I begin tutoring by arranging a trial session where I assess the tutee's level of French language and discuss the specific areas they would like to focus on. Lessons would then be an hour or two hours, depending on what the tutee prefers, and structured around ten minute blocks of learning and small sections of application to allow the tutee to test their understanding of each topic.

Personal Description:
I have just completed a Sociology degree at University of Manchester and am going on to study a Masters in Human Resourcing whilst simultaneously training in the GBR Fencing Team. I love teaching children because of their thrill at accomplishing challenges.

Teaching Experience:

I have taken part in buddy reading at primary and secondary schools, and have coached many children in the sport of Fencing and Netball with much success.

Tutoring Approach:

In my own experience as a pupil and a tutor, the problem is rarely the level of knowledge, but exam technique, critical/analytical thinking, writing skills, and the selection of relevant information needed for specific grades. Therefore, I work to help the pupil improve in these areas so as they can reach their full potential.
Lessons will be engaging, and will be adapted to each individuals strengths and weaknesses, so that skills learnt can be adapted to other areas of study and life.

I can accommodate to students due to my flexible schedule.

Personal Description:
I am an academic (PhD in philosophy; areas of specialistion are German thought and the philosophy of human communication), with a passion for teaching. I work with children and adults and can draw not only on academic experience but also on several years of experience as a strategic communication manager in international business.

I am fluent in Dutch, German and English and understand the challenges of non-native speakers in the English school system or in working life very well.

Teaching Experience:

I have significant experience as a university lecturer (philosophy, communication, rhetoric (communication skills, reading and writing skills, textual analysis and essay writing), executive-level business teaching (including business ethics)) and as a high school teacher (in the Netherlands; philosophy).

Tutoring Approach:

I use contemporary pedagogical insights and approaches to learning that emphasise interactive learning, self-motivation, reflective learning and the formative dimensions of the learning process. Naturally, I always look at your individual needs, circumstances and learning styles. I tend to work from a holistic perspective and stimulate my students to become self-learners. Whether more skills-oriented or more geared towards furthering insight and understanding, my lessons are concentrated, require active participation and - hopefully - speak to students' natural curiosity. They are usually very effective. I use a combination of instruction, exercises and discussion, followed up by homework and/or on-line tutoring.

Personal Description:
I enjoy working with people. My interests include Rotaract (raising money and volunteering), Ceroc dancing (modern jive), reading (mostly fantasy), writing and crafts (including jewellery and card making). My favourite authors are Trudi Canavan, Terry Pratchett and Holly Lisle.
I also like to tinker with my computer, which I built myself.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified UK Primary teacher and I have worked in schools with children aged 3-18.
I also have experience in tutoring one-to-one or in small groups. I have taught English as a foreign language to very young children, who knew very little English, and also to older children and adults.

Tutoring Approach:

Group discounts are available on request (up to 3 students at a time). I also offer discounts if you introduce your friends. Please ask for details on all discounts.

I specialise in the basic skills (reading, writing, spelling, maths, and English as a foreign language). If a child or adult does not have these basic skills they will struggle in other academic subjects and it may hinder their enjoyment of life.
I teach these skills using the same theories, to both adults and children. I adapt the content and theme of my lessons to suit the level and interests of the student.
I prefer to use a project approach to teaching. I teach the basic skills and the student practises their new skills in interesting and relevant ways.

Personal Description:
I am 23 years old, and I'm studying for a PhD in Politics at the University of Manchester. I passed my Masters with distinction (in International Politics) last year, and also hold a First Class BA degree in Politics and Modern History. I am passionate about education and my subject and want to help pass on my skills to others. Outside of University I run a project with local homeless people in Manchester and like working with different types of people.

Teaching Experience:

I have three months experience as a tutor at the University of Manchester, teaching international politics to undergraduate students. This involved leading group discussions and learning exercises, as well as holding one-to-one sessions on a weekly basis. I gave extra guidance sessions around exam time, and was responsible for marking and giving feedback on assessed work.

In terms of private one-on-one tuition I have experience tutoring several students in English, including adult literacy, GCSE and non-native learners. I am confident in my ability to adapt to different learning styles.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible approach which is student-centred. I believe that each person learns differently, and before tutoring I would have an informal chat about which approach would suit the student. I would then tailor exercises and feedback as appropriate. I think that students should get as much feedback as possible to show where they are progressing.

Personal Description:
24 year old female, living in Manchester city centre. I am originally from Liverpool and came to Manchester to study English Literature and Language at University, gaining a 2.1. honours degree. I decided to stay in Manchester as I find it an amazing city and have some great friends here. I currently work as an insurance underwriter and have been for the past two years. I thoroughly enjoy my job and I am very dedicated and ambitious, currently studying and participating in exams with the aim of achieving a diploma in insurance.

In my spare time I enjoy going the gym, playing badminton, yoga, painting artwork, going the pub (etc) and I'm also a keen cook.

I am able to work in the pupil's home and I am also willing to travel to pupils houses as long as is near to City Centre (and accessible by tram, bus, train etc as do not drive)

I have always had a desire to teach, but was never interested in doing it full time, therefore becoming a personal tutor would be a perfect opportunity for me to do something worthwhile which i will enjoy.

Teaching Experience:

I have not had any previous teaching experience

Tutoring Approach:

I am young, approachable and believe the best learning will be in an environment where enjoyment is factored in. I will ensure this is the case.
I am extremely patient, friendly and a clear communicator and I value these attributes as being significant benefits required when offering personal tutoring.
I may not have the experience of other tutors but I feel i certainly have the enthusiasm and helpful, dedicated attitude that will ensure i am alert to the pupil's needs.

Personal Description:
A recent graduate in English Language and Literature, I love books but I love working with people too, which makes teaching very enjoyable for me! As a young child I struggled to learn to read at school and it took extra-curricular support for me to catch up with my peers. In terms of academic success I've never looked back since then, but I can really relate to the frustration that many students feel when they know they aren't achieving their full potential. Currently I work full-time as a Youth Projects Manager and am saving up to do an MA in English Literature and Creative Writing. Apart from reading and writing I enjoy cooking, cycling and drawing. I have lived abroad in several countries and enjoy learning languages; I speak intermediate French, Italian and Hebrew.

Teaching Experience:

I already tutor privately, mainly for English GCSE, and I have previously taught or assisted in the teaching of a Jewish Studies GCSE course for five years. Until recently my job as as a youth worker also entailed devising and teaching weekly courses in youth leadership for teenagers, and I have delivered these to over 40 youths over the past year. I worked as a paid English teacher on an Italian school's summer camp in Umbria two years ago, and I have also worked as a full-time teaching assistant at a secondary school in the borough of Haringey. On a voluntary basis I have taught English Language overseas to both adults and children for three months. In terms of University-level students, my proofreading and editing skills are excellent and whilst an undergraduate I worked part-time as a proofreader at a large company that designed learning programs.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring Approach: Friendly and creative, I am passionate about English and skilled at making the study of literature and language both accessible and fun. I am particularly strong on exam techniques and preparation, and believe that many English students could achieve better at exam level if given the correct skills and structure for their knowledge. A typical course of lessons with me would involve looking through your work to see what could be improved, talking to you about your interests and learning style, and then designing a program of study for the next few months that would really tackle your problem spots, from creating mind-maps or discussing a text all the way through to memorising flashcards and writing practise essays in the run-up to an exam. For assistance in improving your general level of English I can provide games and exercises that develop vocabulary, grammar and spelling

Personal Description:
I am a recent graduate from Salford University, Greater Manchester, in English Literature and Creative Writing (BA hons). As of September, I shall be continuing my studies at the University of East Anglia, taking an MA in Scriptwriting.
I am comfortable teaching English Literature, Language, and creative writing.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching experience at present. However, I worked with students on writing projects in the past. I intend to complete a PGCE after finishing my Masters. - My CRB has recently run out. I intend to get this renewed as soon as possible.

Tutoring Approach:

With as subject such as English Literature (and creative writing) in which there are no real wrong or right answers, I believe a tutor's role is to guide the student into honing their ideas and offering new ways to understand a text.

For English Language, I have many exercises which will show the student how to structure sentences and full paragraphs. By explaining what is correct (rather that what is incorrect, as is often taught in schools), the student should take on good English skills as second nature.

Personal Description:
My name is Emily Sundin and I am 19 years old. I am a first year student at Sheffield University studying Criminology. I went to Dartford Grammar Girls School, followed by the boys school for 6th form; two of the best schools in the country and area. I did not do A-Levels, I did the International Baccalaureate, meaning I carried on my range of educational subjects until the end of my school, acquiring a diploma supporting German, Theatre Arts, English, History, Maths and Chemistry with Theory of Knowledge.

In my spare time I am an active scouter and I have been part of the scout movement for the past 10 years. I am very active and enjoy rock climbing, sailing, kayaking and many other outdoor pursuits. I was selected to represent Britain at the 100th anniversary of scouting on the 21st World Scout Jamboree. If I'm not mingling with my university friends, I am usually camping somewhere or another.

I also very much enjoy amateur dramatics, as well as script writing. I dabble a little in film making but stage acting and directing are more my scene!(Excuse the pun)

Teaching Experience:

I have done a lot of work experience at my Mother's school (she is an assistant head), in all areas with all subjects. I tutor my sister at German as I speak it at a very high level. I have tutored many friends and neighbours and was a peer mentor at my school for many years.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe teaching is more than just passing an exam (although that is clearly important). I believe that tutoring isn't just about siting at a desk and lecturing. Through my drama and my scouting, I have learnt that eductaion has to be proactive and creative. I use this method when tutoring, in order to stimulate the brain and help memory. It worked for me so it's got to work!
