Personal Description:
I am currently studying Mathematics at Aberdeen University, and looking to make a little bit of extra money to help support my studies. I am very enthusiastic about maths and physics, something which I try to pass on to my tutees. I am looking to tutor standard grade, higher and advanced higher maths and physics and also advanced higher applied maths (mechanics) which is not listed on the site. I would also be willing to teach the English equivalents: GCSE, AS, and A level maths, further maths and physics, should anyone be interested. I am willing to travel or to tutor from my own flat (Old Aberdeen, near the University), whichever is more convenient for you.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring since 2008. Although I could not list it on this site I would also be very interested in tutoring advanced higher mechanics. This is a subject which I actually taught myself in sixth year because my school was unable to provide the course. Having taught myself from a textbook I achieved an A grade in the exam. The skills I gained from this include the ability to set appropriate work, to decide which areas of the course need emphasis for the exam, and the ability to summarise the key outcomes from each topic.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to carefully go over what has been covered in class in order to find any areas of difficulty and then to spend time working through these areas and to build understanding and confidence to the point where the tutee can answer questions on the topic with ease. Moving through the coursework in this way ensures no gaps in course knowledge. In the lead up to exams and tests most of the time would be spent on revision and past papers, stopping to go over again any uncertainties. I would usually obtain from SQA the course specifications which detail each learning outcome, that is, what the student is expected to know. This gives me the ability to check through, systematically, every area which the tutee could possibly be tested on and thus ensuring that the tutee is fully prepared for the exams.

Personal Description:
I am a 43 year old living in Poole. I hold a Bachelors of Science in Archaeology and I have worked in education for eleven years as a Science Technician and I am now currently an FE Lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College. I moved into part-time teaching and tutoring while at Oakmead and after working as a contract lecturer over the years I am now teaching full-time at Bournemouth and Poole College. I have been tutoring for the last seven years and I have been teaching for the last five years

Teaching Experience:

I am at present a BTEC Chemistry Lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College. I have taught BTEC Forensics at Oakmead, Access to HE Forensics and Regulation of Physiology and BTEC Level 3 Science in Health & Beauty at Bournemouth & Poole College. I have also taught GCSE Human Health & Physiology for 2 years at Oakmead and at Wiltshire College and GCSE History during my placement.
I have experience in tutoring KS2 Maths, KS2 & KS3 Science, GCSE and A Level Biology, GCSE and A Level Chemistry, GCSE and A Level Physics, GCSE Science, GCSE History, AS and A2 History, A2 Archaeology and A Level Politics
I am also an Team Leader examiner and moderator for Edexcel in GCSE History and an examiner in GCSE Chemistry for AQA.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to gain an initial assessment on where the student is. This will guide me on where the student has to improve. While I prepare well for any tutoring session I believe in stretching and challenging the student and I will always ask questions to reinforce the knowledge. My approach is not just giving the student past papers and worksheets but to talk, engage and discuss any problems through in depth questioning so that are there as this will prevent misconceptions and allow full understanding.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified physics teacher with over six years experience at helping students understand physics and achieve higher grades. I am CRB checked and would be delighted to take on new clients so please get in touch.
I will provide:
Friendly, reliable and professional service
Highly efficient and effective environment for learning
Excellent subject knowledge
An ability to get the best out of students
GCSE, A-level and Undergraduate Physics tutorials
GCSE, A-level Chemistry and Maths tutorials
Supporting homework material provided after each tutorial
Increase students grades (see testimonials)

Approach to tutoring:
I use questioning and relaxed assessment during tutorials to find weakness, misconceptions and gaps in a students knowledge. I then use a wide range of resources to give my students a solid understanding of the subject matter. Students will be set questions to do outside of tutorials which we review in later sessions, this allows us to focus on exam techniques.

How online tutoring works:
I tutor online over Skype using a graphics tablet which acts as an interactive white board so I can draw and write directly on the student's screen. Students will be able to see and hear my explanations, ask questions and drive their learning forward. All sessions are tailor to the needs of the student. Find out more about me.

Teaching Experience:

With one-to-one tuition, my students make excellent progress. For several years I have tutored through school programmes and today I tutor a range of students in preparation for Maths and Science GCSEs and A-Levels. In that time I have always been highly respected by my students and they have achieved at or above their target grades in both GCSE and A-Level.

Working in a comprehensive school I taught a full spectrum of ages and abilities, ranging from students with basic reading and writing skills up to extremely gifted A2 level students applying to Oxbridge.

Tutoring Approach:

Sessions will be tailored to students' individual needs within a friendly, open and efficient learning environment. Lessons, resources and questions are planned around my students and I use questioning and relaxed assessment during tutorials to make sure the maximum amount of progress is made. By finding areas of weakness and gaps in knowledge, students can be lead to their full potential.

I tutor online over Skype or iChat. I use a graphics tablet and interactive white board software so I can draw and write directly on the student's screen. Students will be able to see and hear my explanations, ask questions and drive their learning forward.

Personal Description:
I am a second year undergraduate student studying for an Bsc in Geophysics at Imperial College London. Alongside my studies I am also involved with charity work, play the violin in one of my university's orchestras and enjoy a variety of different types of sport. I would like to think I am friendly and approachable, and highly motivated to achieve in everything I do.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience privately tutoring for just under a year, and have experience with both maths and physics GCSE. Last year, aside from private tutoring I volunteered for a tutoring scheme run by my university called 'Team Up', which will gave me invaluable experience and practice at tutoring Year 8 students in KS3 Science. For part of this I attended a short course run by Teach First on how to become a better tutor and have had a CRB check performed.

In past years I have also volunteered for a local Geological Trust, which involved in taking part in 'Geological Road shows' and trying to engage children with geology using activities, workshops, games etc. I have also completed a weeks work experience in a local Primary School, where I shadowed a Year 4 teacher and took charge of small groups in need of extra support.

I have also been an active member in Girl Guiding for numerous years, and have taken many leadership roles. These include being a young leader at a local brownie group (aged mainly between 7-10 years old) for the last two years; and although out of a formal teaching environment, it was a role of responsibility and has given me more experience engaging with young children.

In my secondary school I also took part in a weekly music mentoring workshop for several years to help teach younger students how to play string instruments, mainly the violin. Though hard work I found this thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding; especially when some of my students went on to attend paid lessons and take graded examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I always aim to engage with my students and attempt to make learning as interesting and stimulating as possible. I also believe that recapping previously covered material through short sessions each week can help the student to retain and recall information more easily - and make pre-exam revision less daunting.
As I have only recently completed my A-Levels I feel that I am in a very good position to help students within the education system, as I have first-hand experience. I believe good exam technique can be hugely beneficial to students sitting national qualifications, and I would be able to pass on my experience in dealing with examinations to your child. Organisation is also an important skill, not only whilst at school but for future life, and I would again hope to pass on this attribute to your son or daughter; helping them learn to plan their study time and revision.

Personal Description:
Hi there,

I'm Alan, I'm an Engineering manager with Siemens, I'm married and live in a lovely part of the Hampshire countryside.

Apart from work, I spend a lot of time cycling and walking the nearby parks and hills.

Teaching Experience:

I've been tutoring for 5 years now, and I am trained as a trainer through work, so I've taught both adults and students. I used to run a training team as part of my last job, and understand a lot about different teaching and learning styles.

Since tutoring I've mostly taught 16 and upwards, physics and maths, and occasionally the odd other question!

Tutoring Approach:

My aim is to make the teaching as simple as possible, and let the student work it out themselves with me providing guidance where need be. Physics, and maths in particular, can be daunting - many people just want to get a good grade and move on, which I understand completely, I'm not going to make you love the subjects but help you get to where you want to be.

Personal Description:
An enthusiastic, inspiring tutor with a PhD in Physics.

I have a long history with Imperial College London where I have studied and worked since my undergraduate degree. I worked in the Theoretical Physics group for six months as a Research Assistant after being awarded a PhD in Physics, studying Observational Cosmology. Prior to this, I was awarded an MSci in Physics with Theoretical Physics (First Class honours). During my PhD, I worked part time as an undergraduate teaching assistant for Maths, Physics and Computing courses.

I am an enthusiastic tutor with a love for Physics and Maths. I am passionate about education and sharing knowledge with my students - I will soon be starting a secondary teacher training course for which I have been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Institute of Physics.

Teaching Experience:

In the past I have volunteered at a Homework Club in Earls Court for disadvantaged 8-16 year old children, which was extremely rewarding. I worked on Maths and Science homework once a week for several months.

I also volunteered as an A-level maths and physics tutor in a mixed sixth form at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School through the Pimlico Connection volunteering scheme at Imperial College. I tutored small groups of one or two students for a couple of hours a week for five months.

I was employed as a part time undergraduate teaching assistant at Imperial College throughout the three and a half years of my PhD. I assisted staff in teaching maths, physics and computing courses. This included assisting students with problem sheets, supervising project work, marking reports and giving students individual feedback.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to develop a problem solving approach, showing you how to approach problems so that you can apply existing knowledge to new examples. I think that a tutor should demonstrate a passion for their subject and be able to excite others about it.

I have a knowledge of the National Curriculum and am familiar with the GCSE and A-level specifications.

Personal Description:
I am currently a first year mathematics student at The University of Bath. Before this I had a great experience at The Woodroffe School from 2006 - 2013. I have two younger sisters aged 9 and 14, meaning I have had experience of being responsible for children of any age. My parents are both full time so I play (and have played) an active role in their childhood.

As a student at university I am available only at holiday periods. This year these dates are approximately:
Easter: A week from the 28th April
Summer: June through to September

I am more than happy to travel to your house or wherever, or you are welcome to come to my house.

Teaching Experience:

Having very recently progressed through the education and further education system, I am well aware of the modern exam styles and effective teaching techniques.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a student myself means I can understand problems from a students point of view and use my own experiences to help students grasp complex concepts and practically apply them.

Personal Description:
I am a 2013 Southampton University graduate that has a keen interest in Physics, Maths and the Social Sciences. I also have a lot of self taught IT knowledge that I put to use in charity work in my local area. I want to tutor because I enjoy helping others get the most out of their education and ensuring that they get the results they deserve.

Teaching Experience:

I have many hours of experience teaching friends and family about using their computers and how to maintain them. More recently, I have also been broadening this teaching via local charity IT work.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring would involve strategic goal setting, followed by verbalising thought processes involved in the topic at hand. Finally, asking questions of the student is my way of assessing their knowledge. However, these questions would not be "do you understand", but more about each specific topic in order to expand their knowledge. I believe it is important for a student to question their own knowledge and build it with help rather than to be given the answer to any question.

Personal Description:
I have recently completed a Bachelor of Science degree (honours) majoring in microbiologyy, immunology and infection. At university I studied Physics, Maths, Biology and Chemistry.
I am currently tutoring GCSE students in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics and am therefore familiar with the syllabus.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many high school students in Science and Maths. I have also done volunteer mentoring/tutoring programs with Indigenous Australians and Refugees in Australia.

Tutoring Approach:

Make sure the student understands all the syllabus points and reinforce key concepts. Also to target problem areas by going over them multiple times. And finally in the weeks leading up to the exams, do lots of practice exam papers.

Personal Description:
Hi there!

My name's Jack, I'm 24 years old and a recent(ish) physics graduate. I grew up in Tewkesbury where my folks still live and went on to study physics at Bristol University. I've always been keen on the sciences and really enjoyed my university years - Bristol itself is a lovely place too and I found it to have a very friendly vibe. After graduating I worked as a software engineer in Bath for a few months before moving back to Cheltenham to start a graduate scheme with GE aviation.

In my spare time I am a pretty avid guitarist and have been playing for 7 or 8 years now. I played with a band in Bristol until just recently (mostly Indie/Rock stuff) and would love to get back into this at some point. I've also been toying with getting singing lessons lately as that is something I've always wanted to be able to do! Im a bit of a film buff particularly science fiction films (shock horror!) - my current film obsession is 'Moon', directed by David Bowie's son no less! Aside from that I retain my interest in physics and try and keep my mind limber by reading about new theories and ideas.

Oh and I am a big fan of George Orwell's writings - I compare things to 1984 so often that my girlfriend has started rolling her eyes when I do so!

Teaching Experience:

At university learning and teaching were, at least in my experience, very closely associated. I found that the most effective (and most rewarding) way to learn was to toss ideas around with my course mates and explain to each other our different interpretations of a topic. Helping someone else get to grips with a tough idea is a wonderful feeling and something that I would like to have the opportunity to do more regularly.

More recently I have been tutoring my girlfriend with her college maths assignments (free of charge of course!). The work is of a GCSE to A level standard and being a bit of a math-phobe she sometimes finds it a bit overwhelming. Taking things slowly and staying positive has worked well and her average is now over 85%.

My brother is also quite an eager learner and often asks me to help with his computer programming which has come on very strongly since he first began.

Tutoring Approach:

Being fairly young and still not that far removed from the student life I feel as though I know what it feels like to struggle with tough concepts and appreciate the value of a good tutor. My method is to offer friendly and specific advice on the problem at hand and try to instill fundamental understanding rather than methodical approaches. I find the best way to do this is to start with relatively simple problems to build confidence and enjoyment - I find that it is all to easy for a student to be put off maths or think they 'arent clever enough' if difficult problems are presented too early. Taking a structured approach is also important so that each lesson builds upon the last and gives a well rounded account of the topic.

Most importantly I am a friendly, patient person and will always do my best to help.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced tutor and have recently graduated with a MSc at Imperial College to add to a BSc in Physics from Manchester University. I enjoy teaching and inspiring the next generation to excel academically and to love the subjects that they are learning.

While academically accomplished, I am also personable and prefer tuition lessons to be fun and interesting, which is when I believe the best learning happens. I specialise in Maths and Physics to all levels, as well as Entrance Exams.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 3 years tutoring experience, helping a number of students through Maths, Science and Business Studies GCSEs, Maths and Physics A-Levels, as well as a number of University courses. I also have experience teaching younger children in the classroom, and coaching several children through 11+ exams.

I am always pleased to see my students learn to enjoy a subject and advance from their current level, and I am proud to state that I have helped students pass 11+ exams and achieve top grades at GCSE and A-Level. But perhaps my proudest moment as a tutor was helping a student, who began with poor Maths skills, pass his GCSE Maths exams with a B grade, which allowed him to advance into a Mechanics Apprenticeship Course.

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to adapt to the needs of the student, and I generally like to instil a deep understanding of a subject, as well as working towards success in specific exams. With Maths and Physics I find it particularly important for students to understand the underlying concepts, and this is where my own deep knowledge of these subjects really helps.

I use a range of different teaching techniques to keep students engaged, and I work really hard to make sure that lessons are fun and interesting for both the student and myself, and I find that if students enjoy a subject they advance quickly.

Planning is also very important and I will generally work out a complete tuition plan with the student and guardian to cover my entire time with the student, with clear objectives and goals. Each individual lesson will then be planned to fit within this plan, and progress updates can be supplied if requested.
