Personal Description:
I am 53, with a B.Sc. in theoretical physics and an M.Sc. in quantum field theory (with some astrophysics), both from Imperial College, London. I have spent some years working in IT, but maths and physics are the subjects I love, and I enjoy teaching them. I'm familiar with all mathematics (including further maths) and physics to beyond A level standard and theoretical physics to university graduate level.

Teaching Experience:

I also teach chess at a school.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to teach the concepts clearly. Once the student has
the fundamental concepts straight then academic attainment follows naturally.

Many pupils struggle with maths and physics because of poor explanations
of the concepts involved. Schools often rely on rote memorisation and cramming, as
alternative to understanding. My approach is to explain the derivation of
material. A successful technique is to work through the pupil's choice of homework
or revision problem exercises or past exam papers, showing how each exercise can
be solved. This way the tutoring is targeted at exactly those areas that require
help and is also most directly relevant to achieving exam success.

All curricula and exam boards covered.

Subjects

Personal Description:
I'm a 41 year old man with over 16 years experience of teaching Chemistry. I hold a BSc degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry and a Certificate of teaching in the life-long learning sector (CTLLS). I currently teach KS3 Science, KS4 Chemistry and Physics, A level Chemistry and AS Physics. I have done private tutoring in chemistry up to A level since 1997. I have taught students privately ranging from KS3 to first year undergraduate level. A few of those I taught GCSE had no hope of passing but went on to achieve grade As and proceeded to study 'A' level Chemistry. Those I taught 'A' level improved their achievement to surpass their university entry requirements for the degree courses of their choice. Many of them always made comments like, 'Wonderful explanations', 'I have understood what I have been missing all along', 'You are an excellent teacher- you made the concepts so easy for me to understand'.

I am very passionate about my teaching because I know I'll be influencing the lives of my students for the good. I always teach my students to reflect upon their performance and make the maximum effort to teach them to learn. I aim to enthuse and inspire every student about chemistry that passes through my hands helping them to find an explanation of why they are studying the subject. If they can find the reason then they can be motivated to work on the course and stick with it when the going gets tough.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching 'A' Level Chemistry since 1993. I have taught the following specifications: 1. ORC A level Chemistry A from 1993 - 2003 and then 2007 to date;
2. OCR A level Chemistry (Salters B) 2003 - 2006
3. AQA A level Chemistry 2004 - 2005 (privately)
4. IB Diploma Chemistry 2008 to date
5. AQA GCSE Chemistry 2006-2007 then 2008 to date

Tutoring Approach:

I always start with an initial assessment to find out the needs of the student which I have been called to satisfy. The session involves question and answer session over the phone or face to face and a short exercise which I will assess and feedback during the session with the student. I can travel to the student's house or better still they can come to mine. At regular intervals e.g. fortnightly I always ask for feedback about the progress of the lessons so that everything I will be teaching them matches their needs. I give assignments and tests under exams conditions to test how my students will perform in the exam and always communicate with the parents of the progress their son/daughter will be making. If I notice the conditions I will be teaching the student particularly at their home are not conducive for me to maximally discharge my service to them, I will politely ask them to address the situation or find another tutor. This is rare though.

I am currently teaching 2 students for A level Mathematics, 4 students for GCSE Maths, Physics and Chemistry, 6 students for 11+ entrance examinations for watford grammar schools, Parmiters, St.Albans consortium and Henrietta Barnett school.

Tutoring Approach:

I conduct an initial assessment on the first day to get a feel of the current level of the student. Then I chalk out an individual tutoring plan for the student based on his/her current level and aims and goals students/parents would like to acheive from the tuition. Personal Description:
My name is Aurélien, I am 22 years old and I am a French student currently attending the Advanced Mechanical Engineering MSc at Imperial College (last year). I am from Supelec in France, which is one of the top ranked Engineering Schools there ("Grandes Ecoles") and I received my A-level degree with distinctions. I have extensive knowledge in French, Mathematics and Physics. My English is good even though I am still learning.

Teaching Experience:

On top of the fact that my studies provided me extensive knowledge in some fields, I managed to improve my oral skills in public too so that I have no problem to explain difficult notions in front of a public. I already have some experience in teaching since I have been a tutor for two years though the French program : A "Grande Ecole", why not for me? There, I prepared workshops and personal teaching sessions every week in order to help my student to improve their knowledge and their skill, but also to open themselves to the culture.

Tutoring Approach:

As far as I am concerned, I think that the approach to tutoring has to be adapted to every student. Each one has his own problems of methods and understanding so that we have to find together a good way to learn for him.
What I can provide : methods class, learning help, learning methods, direct applications, complex exercices to go further, test reviewing... and others.
I am totally able to adapt myself.

Personal Description:
I am an ex- Imperial College academic who now runs a team and personal development consultancy. I am calm and encouraging in manner. I moved out of the city into the countryside six years ago and have never once regretted it.

I was a Science and Engineering Ambassador for SETNET. In 2005 I had and Enhanced Disclosure CRB check. I was responsible for organizing a number of Science Outreach events. Science can be fun!!

I have been told that I am a good motivator and that I help people fulfill their potential. All my students show significant grade enhancement, sometimes from U to A!

Teaching Experience:

I was a senior lecturer in Physical Chemistry at Imperial College London, where I was also Senior Tutor. This meant that I had responsibility for the entire departmental tutorial system for some~450 students and the training of new members of staff. I have been involved in small group teaching for over 13 years.

I have been privately tutoring AS/A2 Chemistry and Physics for around two years in the Hants / Surrey borders.

I also help with UCAS applications as I had an admissions role at IC.

I have some experience of working with people with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and Aspergers.

Tutoring Approach:

Each student is different and I tailor my method to the needs of the student, offering a bespoke approach. It usually takes three or four sessions to get to know what does and does not work for each individual. I try different methods. Some people learn more visually and conceptually others like more practical methods. I prefer to work through problems / exam papers with the student rather than "teach". That way in working together the student takes responsibility for their own learning. Learning is by discussion and doing.

I try to be as flexible as possible and fit round family schedules.

Tutoring Approach:

Even though this would be my first tutoring work, I am confident that I will do a good job, with dedication and perseverance. First of all, my purpose is to find out what the tutee demands so that I adapt to his/her needs, in a friendly atmosphere. I am also open to opinions and suggestions regarding my teaching manner.

Personal Description:
I am a tri-lingual (fluent in German and Spanish) King's College London PhD neuroscientist student with a desire to pass on my knowledge to others. I have previously tutored in person and received great feedback with students receiving mostly A*'s and A's. I believe that interacting and stimulation is the key to excellent tutoring. I welcome inquiries from anyone who would like extra, on-going tuition, help with general revision or assignments, or preparation for exams.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 10 years tutoring experience with only positive feedback. All my students have gained B and above and mostly A and A*

Tutoring Approach:

No doubt the most rewarding aspect is that when you start tutoring a person, who start out struggling, gradually develop an interest and understanding. It's truly inspiring to see how they can engage with a subject when a slightly different perspective is offered. I am quite an interactive tutor and put a lot into pre planning all my lessons and so far I have had massive success with my students. Just recently a girl who was predicted B's and C's, which is by no means bad, achieved 3 A*'s in all the subjects I tutored her in. I will be tutoring her for A levels as well and will hopefully try and help her achieve her dream of getting into medical school and becoming a doctor.

I am very enthusiastic and believe exam practice is extremely important because even if you have the knowledge without the actual exam practice often it is hard to achieve that A or A*.

Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic individual, currently studying a physics bachelor at Cardiff university. I am very much immersed in my study, of which mathematics plays a very large part, and so I am proficient in the practice of both physics and mathematics. I am very passionate about my course, and I believe that passion to be the most important factor in learning a subject that at first may seem intimidating and monotonous. This passion is one that I would hope to pass on to any pupil under my guidance.

Teaching Experience:

Academically speaking, I have no teaching experience to speak of. However, I always enjoyed helping others on my way through school and college, having had many peers who struggled with the material, and having enjoyed and been lucky enough to understand the material myself. It is my desire to at some point in my life, become a teacher, and so I would consider this to be a good first step towards that goal.

Tutoring Approach:

As I mentioned previously, passion is a large factor in learning subjects that at first appear mundane. I feel however that people who view mathematics and physics as mundane have merely been neglected by their teachers. One on one tutoring is very beneficial for those who have failed to gain stimulation from traditional methods since a tutor can focus on the needs of the individual. I would strive to create a comfortable atmosphere for any student, one that allows them a feeling of freedom, a feeling necessary to progress in these subjects.

I also find that students will always question why mathematics is useful. As a physicist I get rewarded with the answers to this question on a day to day basis. I would aim to provide these answers wherever they appeared in order to show a student that what they are doing has meaning.

Finally, I think that it is vitally important for people studying physics and maths to experience the joy that you can gain from solving a problem that challenges you. I would try for any potential student, to make my lessons more of a guiding hand, and less of a rinse and repeat methodology. True understanding is far greater a teacher than mere repetition.

Personal Description:
I am a recent graduate from Imperial College having studied Civil Engineering for 4 years. In my free time I enjoy playing football and perform with several music groups. Another passion of mine is computer programming - I am currently teaching myself Python and JavaScript.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many friends and relatives in Maths, I.T and French, and the job satisfaction and positive feedback I received are what inspired me to do it on a more serious level. During my degree, I worked as a tutor for first year computer science classes where I gained a lot of valuable experience, not least improving my communication with the students.

Tutoring Approach:

People respond differently to a particular method of teaching and it is hard to describe a general approach that works equally for everyone, which is obviously one of the main benefits of one-to-one teaching. I am very patient, and have had experience with different types of learners, adapting to the student's requirements. Although I don't like to focus on exams, most students can't avoid them and I will help prepare the student in the best possible way.

2. I clarify anything for the student
3. We do example exercises together
4. I provide problems for the student to solve in class
5. Homework - test almost everything we covered in class with both theoretical and practical (when applied) questions. Homework will be handed in and marked/corrected. Detailed feedback will be provided in the next meeting.
6. In class test in every chapter we complete - again detailed feedback will be provided in the next meeting.

Videos and relevant interesting facts will be discussed to increase interest.

Subjects that include experiments (Physics/Chemistry/Biology): We will cover the experiments by describing and explaining them. These will be tested in the same way as the whole curriculum, with example exercises, problems, homework and tests. Personal Description:
I am a student and University College London where I am studying for my Masters in Computer Science. This year I graduated from the University of Cambridge where I studied Natural Sciences. I have always been passionate about learning and want to use that to help others with their studies. I am currently working on a university project for a start-up at Microsoft Ventures.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously tutored a family friend for her Science duel award GCSEs. I got very positive feedback from her and she achieved a higher grade than she was expecting. I have received lots of small group tuition whilst completing my degree at Cambridge and have seen how many people teach well (and how others teach not so well).

Tutoring Approach:

When teaching the most important thing for me is that the student understands the concepts of the subject. Once this has happened I find that it becomes much easier to prepare for exams. I also understand that all students require different styles. My aim is to tailor what I do to what each student needs and to make lessons as engaging as possible. I am always happy to receive feedback or to be asked to change my lesson style to suit the pupil.
