Personal Description:
I am a full time student at Heriot-Watt University, currently in my third year of an MPhys Physics Master's course. I'm always up for a challenge, and strive to reach goals. I am fairly young, in the sense that I am an undergraduate (but that only means I have a fresher knowledge of the A-level/GSCE syllabi!). I have a reputation of being very clear-minded.

Teaching Experience:

I have no qualifications as such, but have privately taught GCSE Chemistry and Physics on several occasions. And all my tutees came out with A* in those 2 subjects! I am occasionally called upon by my friend to help with A-level chemistry, since a lot of it is needed in the Biochemistry sections of his Biology course at University.

Tutoring Approach:

Simplicity! Visualizing a question is very important, so diagrams and pictures always help. The way to tackle any exam is to sit down with the syllabus statement, pick out the difficult sections/things yet to learn, and compose a set of illustrated notes. Meanwhile, look over past papers to get to grips with the way problems are presented and answered. As basic and laborious as they are, flash cards work wonders.

Personal Description:
I am a research student doing Phd on "Optimal Solar Water Heater for Scotthish Weather Conditions". I am also a part time lecturer/Demonstrator at my university mainly teach Engineering subjects. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Teaching Experience:

I have a fair amount of teaching experience at university level. I have been teaching GCSE level students for over five years now. Mathematics and Physics are my key areas, although I have taught engineering subjects (theromodynamics, Heat Transfer)privately

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is firstly to asses the candidate and handle his needs accordingly. Step by step approach by way of examples makes learning easier and fun. Enforcing and instilling core concepts is what I focus on. Learning can be fun if the environment is conducive so things can be unconventional and easy going.

Personal Description:
I am 24 year old, a 3rd Year Structural Engineering student at Heriot Watt University and during the summers I work for a large engineering firm as a student engineer.

I grew up in Belfast where I gained 10 GCSEs and 3 A- Levels, but I am best suited to teaching the maths based subjects.

Teaching Experience:

None in an official capacity but I have grown up with three younger brothers, and at different phases throughout their school careers I have had to take them through part of subjects they could not grasp on their own.

Tutoring Approach:

As with most people trying to teach, I expect a certain amount of work from the student, but I feel that if it is possible to strike up a rapport with them, teaching can be much less of a struggle for both parties. I feel it is best throughout the year to teach the syllabus along side what is being taught in class, but closer to exam time it may become more pressing to focus on some key areas of weakness, and show the pupil specific methods to answer exam questions.

Prior to beginning any tuition, in order to get the most out of teaching time, a copy of the syllabus to be taught will be needed and, if required, a breakdown of the timescale for each section of the subject would help to apportion the work.

As I am still in education myself, I am very aware of what the differences between a good and bad teacher are, and how this can affect the willingness to learn. As I am still in a position where I am sitting exams myself, I know how many examiners work with regard to setting exam questions. If past papers are available, these can be used not only for practice, but they can also give an idea of the questions likely to appear.

Personal Description:
I am a Univeristy of Edinburgh Physics 3rd Year student, and have completed Mathematics & Further Mathematics A-Level, and Physics A-Level. I am outgoing, responsible, and a reliable tutor. I am committed to teaching these amazing subjects to the benefit of others.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored certain aspects of these subjects up to degree level to different university students.

Tutoring Approach:

I start of by talking to the student/parents, and look at the areas of the curriculum that most need work. An initial session is given on one of the sections, and a plan is presented along with any deadlines related to exams. The plan is then then cross-checked as the student undergoes their study, and can be presented at any time to view the current progress.

I adopt an easy going but effective teaching method to deliver the content to the student in a manner which is coherent, and understandable.

Personal Description:
My undergraduate degree was in mathematics at Cambridge University, and now I am studying for an MSc in renewable energy engineering at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. As a student I am constantly learning new things which helps keep my mind active and in the mode for study.

As a friendly and approachable person I enjoy socialising with friends. I love playing badminton, and also like to cycle to keep fit. Helping other people succeed with their goals is something I hope to participate more in, and I strongly believe that the effort I put into this will mutually help me to succeed with mine. To me tutoring seems like a worthwhile way to pass on useful knowledge and experience effectively, allowing for flexibility and extra attention to be paid to a students needs.

Teaching Experience:

University offered one-to two tutoring where the academic tutor works through problems with two students at a time, it allows individual problems to be discussed and resolved effectively. I understand, from this experience, that personal attention can make a great deal of difference to the learning process and can help students resolve difficulties effectively.

I have some tutoring experience from before university and after graduation, all of these were for mathematics. However I am confident in tutoring physics up to A level standard and so this can also be requested.

Tutoring Approach:

I am available by correspondence or within a short distance from my location (Edinburgh EH8 9HZ).

It is important for the student to communicate what he/she wants to achieve and the difficulties they are facing, so a discussion between myself and the student should take place before and during tutorials.

Personal Description:
I am 26 year old Cambridge graduate, currently studying for a engineering PhD at the University of Edinburgh. I love teaching, and can explain things clearly at the right level for the student. I'm very patient, and believe that careful tutoring outside of the pressure of the classroom can be an excellent way to learn.

Teaching Experience:

I'm currently teaching, marking and taking practical labs as part of my PhD, and have a variety of previous (informal) tutoring experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very careful approach to tutoring, based on matching the material to the level of the individual student. I have a natural ability to explain things clearly, and ensure the student understands the main concepts before introducing new things. I revise material regularly and throughout tutoring to build up and reinforce learning. I can provide some exercises and questions, although my aim is to help the student, rather than burden them with extra work.

Personal Description:
I am an electrical engineering consultant with a degree in electronics and electrical engineering from The University of Edinburgh. I have previously worked as an electronics design engineer for satellite communications systems and as a college tutor in Wallace College, Edinburgh.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many students during the past five years, both privately and in classes at Wallace College. I have also worked as an instructor at Acrobounce Scotland, which is a high energy outdoor activity for children and I develop good relationships with the students who I teach.

Tutoring Approach:

Once I have established the strengths and weaknesses of the student, I tailor the content of the tutorials to suit the needs of that student. In maths and physics it is important for the student to have a clear understanding of the basic ideas and principles of the subjects, this is where we will start. Once the basic concepts are understood, the tutorials will have a bias toward exam technique and preparing for the final exam. This has proven to be a very effective method of boosting grades in my own exams and in those of my previous students. I have many years experience sitting examinations myself and have lots of advice in how to prepare for and perform well on the big day.

Personal Description:
I am a full time student at the University of Edinburgh currently studying Maths and Physics joint honours. Being a full time student, it means that I am constantly thinking about areas of the subject. I also enjoy sports such as yoga and ultimate frisbee, and have more recently taken up yoga, which helps to bring some clarity and perspective to the mind, especially when Maths and Physics gets a bit too much!
I am currently an intern at a fund management company called Cornelian Asset Management. After I have finished my degree I hope to move into the fund management industry.

Teaching Experience:

I have no teaching experience myself, but for GCSE mathematics I was tutored myself. This experience has enabled me to objectively pin down the strong points of being a tutor, such as how reinforcing the basic principles can be of great advantage, as well as going through worked examples in a clear and concise manner so that confidence is maximised.

Tutoring Approach:

The way I learn maths and physics is by doing. With a student, the approach would be to go through basic methodology of various problems, and then move onto going through questions and past exam papers so that a full range of questions have been thoroughly covered so that the student knows how to confidently and competently deal with anything that an exam might throw at them!

Personal Description:
I am a third year Mathematics student at The University of Edinburgh and I will be graduating at the end of this year. I am very interested in taking my teaching career further after I graduate, and I see this as an excellent opportunity to gain further experience, and provide quality tutoring to ensure the success of the tutee. In addition I also provide University tuition but for 1st year students only. And I provide couching for the Oxford Cambridge OCR Mathematics STEP entrance examination papers for July 2008

Teaching Experience:

I have relevant Mathematics experiance through helping out 1st year economics students at my university.

Tutoring Approach:

First and foremost, I am determined to ensure the Tutee has fully understood all the main concepts required to ensure success for exams at School/College.

I feel firstly it's important to find out the progress and the standard of the Tutee to ensure I'm not explaining things that is already known. But more importantly, the things which the Tutee is struggling with. My main approach begins usually by explaining a lot of concepts in broad strokes to begin with by using appropriate analogies, this is followed by some examples. I will usually set questions after and check that the Tutee understands my teaching.

I also provide relevent teaching aids such as revision guilds and past papers.

I taught for 7 years at Buckinghamshire Business School teaching Maths and IT Management at undergraduate level. I have been tutoring on a one-to-one basis for about 10 years preparing students for GCSE, A-level/Standard grade/Intermediate-2/Higher.

Tutoring Approach:

Friendly, understandable approach designed to take the fear out of Maths and achieve results.
Classes are tailored to the students's needs - strengths and weaknesses. I have an excellent track record of student successes (references available on request).
Ability to identify and address long-standing gaps that prevent further progress. Lessons tie in with either schoolwork or exam revision. I also teach my students how to analyse questions so they can understand exactly what the examiner is looking for and how to maximise their marks.
