Personal Description:
I am in my late twenties.

I studied separate degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, but had always offered private tuition since I left school. In fact, I enjoyed teaching so much that I completed a Post-Grad Certificate in Education for Physics a few years ago, and am now a fully qualified secondary teacher working at a prestigious Public School.

As far as tutoring goes, however, I think what matters is that I am down-to-Earth, and communicate well. All the knowledge in the world is useless if you can't share it!

Having lived in South America for many years, I am also perfectly fluent in Spanish.
My passions include photography, film and astronomy.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified secondary school Physics teacher, teaching KS3, GCSE and A-level Physics.
I am therefore very much in touch with how GCSEs and A-levels work, and what is relevant.

The same is true for maths; although I don't teach maths at my school, I regularly tutor in maths, and am very aware of what is in the GCSE and AS/A2 syllabus (teaching the Edexcel modules, for example).

I have separate honours degrees in both physics and mechanical engineering, and can therefore tutor most first or second year undergrad subjects in these disciplines. In fact I never got any other jobs during college as I have been tutoring in a variety of subjects since I left school.

I also have experience giving Spanish conversation classes.

Tutoring Approach:

Practice, Practice, Practice!
I don't believe anything is impossible to understand; it is just a question of using the right examples to clarify, and taking enough time to practice thoroughly.

I really enjoy tutoring! I have a genuine love for all of the subjects I teach and so my lessons are full of that same enthusiasm and sense of fun!

I always carry out an informal skills and needs assessment before starting the lessons. This means that I can find out what level the student is at, specific strengths and weaknesses, specific aims etc. Then I can tailor the lessons around the student.
Its also important to clarify realistic aims right from the start, so that everyone is clear about what to expect from the lessons.
I also do periodic reviews of how the student is progressing, making sure I am teaching in a way that suits the student, and covering the right material.

Personal Description:
I am a freelance photographer, 32, living and working in Leith. I specialise in PR/events photography and wedding photography, but also cover sporting events, music gigs, landscapes and portraiture. Call me for my website details at Thomsonphotography.
I graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA(hons) in Fine Art Photography in 1996, and have since exhibited my work in Scotland and England, including Stills, Edinburgh and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. I worked extensively in retail after gRaduating, eventually managing both the photographic dept. in Black & Lizars, Edinburgh, and as store manager of Jessops, Shandwick Place, Edinburgh.

Teaching Experience:

Before becoming a freelance photographer, I have had no explicit tutoring experience-but after over 4 years of photographic retail experience, including 2 as store manager, I have tutored, cajoled and convinced the most experienced photographer and the most timid beginner! I was in charge of a team of up to 14 staff, looking after training and development needs.

I have technical knowledge ranging from black and white developing and printing to photoshop techniques; from manual SLRs to all forms of digital imaging.

Tutoring Approach:

As with my management career, I have develpoed not with a style in mind-everyone is different. But, I have always worked with customer service as a priority, and I have a friendly and relaxed manner. I tend to work on a reactive/critique basis, letting the student follow intuitively where they feel their styles lead, and then refine and suggest parallels with other artists and styles. After graduating I have contacts in the artworld, gallery world, retail and professional worlds.

I feel that I have gained valuable experience and wish to continue on my journey of teaching both ICT and Multimedia.

My approach to tutoring is modern and fun, i have a firm ideology that students learn best when they are interested and entertained by their subject. I provide a series of practical tasks for them to complete rather than focusing on the purely theoretical side of the subject.

Personal Description:
I was born in 1951 and have worked in the creative industry for over 30 years. I have extensive knowledge of art photography supply, digital fine art printing and publishing and have worked in most photographic fields including architecture, interiors, travel, fashion, portraiture and still life.

Teaching Experience:

I run regular photographic workshops in the UK, mainland Europe and the United States but have no formal teaching qualifications other than an Dip ad from a three year photography course as a student in the early 1970's.

Tutoring Approach:

There is a good deal of confusion in the relatively recent transition from film to digital photography. For those who seek not to just take a snapshot on auto but wish to understand what constitutes a good photograph, a certain amount of technical information has to be imparted. The camera however is only the tool to capture the image. Seeing clearly, and understanding how to look, observing natural lighting, composition and exposure are the most important elements of any good picture. Thereafter, downloading, editing and simple manipulation are necessary in order to review and enjoy your work. All of this is taught in an engaging and informal manner with the emphasis on immersing oneself in the activity and not just attending a course. The workshops are open to all and professional 35mm SLR digital equipment and laptops are provided. Workshops are run in London, Wiltshire and Majorca.
A minimum of three people are required for any of my workshops although one to one is possible, subject to price.

I have many years of experience as a visiting lecturer, workshop tutor and digital imaging consultant teaching at all levels from infants to higher education. I can help demystify technology and translate geek speak into language mere mortals can understand, so whatever aspect of computing or other technology has you defeated it won't be for much longer! Allied with my own personal work as an artist/photographer/digital image maker I can offer unique insight into the creative and technical requirements of image making processes to help you achieve your academic and/or creative goals.
This is about what you, as a student, would like to know and how you, as a person, shape the knowledge into your own unique art. This is the principle from which to begin - not just learning technique for the sake of it, but because you would like to express something for which the technique is the tool. My work as a tutor is about helping you develop your creative vision and developing techniques to help you express that vision - ensuring an enjoyable process of discovery.

Personal Description:
I have extensive experience of working in the mainstream commercial photography sector at a high level, working with clients as divers as Macdonald's, Citibank, Allied Carpets, Haagen Dazs and The Mail on Sunday. My images have been used worldwide in campaigns that have run to distribution figures in the millions and I have developed, managed and delivered projects with budgets in the tens of thousands.

I started my career in photography after a successful career in recruitment, culminating in running my own agency for 4 years. In 1991 I attended a photography evening course and as photography had been a constant passion since my early teens it was only a matter of time before I made the decision to embark on a new career.

During my career I have maintained a passion for developing my skill and creativity through my own personal creative work. I am never afraid to make mistakes or try new ideas or techniques. Photography has the potential to offers an almost unlimited canvas for experimentation and I understand that this can also be daunting to those new to the medium. I believe I have the skills and enthusiasm to be supportive and encouraging and to act as a facilitator, allowing the students to develop their own ideas and interests.

Teaching Experience:

I have been involved in the Leonardo da Vinci European Placement Programme where I was able to offer internships to 3 students from Sweden, Poland and Greece who worked with me for 6 months each. I made critical assessment reports of their progress, involved them in the day-to-day operation of a commercial studio and in the case of one student, supported him in developing a portfolio, which won him a place on Gothenburg University's School of Photography degree course.

I was involved in the Association of Photographers Education Committee for 4 years from 2000-2004 and during that time gave talks to Degree and Diploma students as well as delivering a lecture to degree course students at Reading University.

Rosendale Primary School in London commissioned me in 2002, to create an exhibition piece involving the pupils and their artwork. We copied, scanned and photographed artworks and images of the school and it's surroundings to create 1200 images used to make large-scale mosaic portraits of six teachers and pupils, samples of which I have included below.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is as a facilitator and mentor providing my students with the confidence to develop their own ideas within a supportive guided structure. I can implement a curriculum differentiated to each students needs meeting the exam requirements while encompassing the student specific range of interests.

Personal Description:
I studied Classical Studies at Reading University, mainly focusing on Latin Literature. I also studied German at university. I mainly teach Latin and English as a Foreign Language and Literacy for students with dyslexia, but am also willing to teach German, and English Literature. I can also offer tuition in photography, both film and digital, and can teach theory and darkroom work. I like teaching both children and adults (and teenagers!),

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as foreign language freelance to people from many different countries and language levels, and currently also work at a language. I have also tutored various children for exams, and provided one-to-one support to dyslexic students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am trained in the Communicative Method of teaching languages. This means that the the lessons are centred around what the student needs to learn, and are based on boosting the student's confidence in the language and encouraging them to use the language as much as possible, without becoming scared of making mistakes. I aim to make my lessons both fun and effective, and to make the students feel like they are making real progress.

Personal Description:
I'm Neil I'm a relaxed, patient person and easy to get along with. I can help you with History, Geography, Politics or English.

I'm from Brighton and am keen to help out anyone who requires any level of help with their subjects for one session or for one year. I continue to read around my subjects and have a genuine enthusiasm and passion for them which (I hope!) passes onto my tutees.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience has come from a variety of places, most notably at Sussex University where I mentored first year undergraduates. I believe that areas such as exam technique and revision are as important as learning the subject and I have many years experience, having successfully negotiated my way through years of exams, GCSEs and A-levels.

Leading seminars at university required careful preparation and planning and I use the same technique to enable successful tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient tutor, helping each tutee as an individual. I like to adapt to each case whether it be working on a topic already covered and which needs explaining; or teaching a topic from scratch.

If help with exam technique is needed that's no problem, I can show where attention should be focussed in exams.

Personal Description:
After twenty years experience in engineering and IT I am now starting a photography business being about to complete a photography degree.
In my professional experience I have had to provide technical support to people of all abilities, often having to teach complex subjects in plain English.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of mentoring new recruits and student interns in professional environments; tutoring Maths and sciences to GCSE and A-level; and informally teaching friends and colleagues many aspects of IT/computing and photography.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to understand what the 'tutee' needs from me. No two people are the same so I tailor my approach to your requirements and skills. I believe that everybody is capable of understanding any subject -- the key is to make that breakthrough: and by finding the holes in the learner's grasp of a subject great things can happen!
