Personal Description:
I am a part-time student at the University of Bristol studying an MA in Philosophy & History of Science. I resigned from a job in finance in London to move to Bristol with the ambition of restarting the more fulfilling endeavours of both teaching and learning. I am a 26 year old male and i live with my girlfriend in Bedminster, South Bristol. Academically i am a high-flyer and achieved straight A grades in four A-levels. In secondary school i won the science prize and in college i won the George Leonard Barber prize for outstanding progress. My career ambition is to become a physics teacher at either secondary or A-level standard.

Apart from teaching and learning centred around philosophy, mathematics and the natural sciences, i am very keen on sport and fitness; i enjoy playing team sports along with cycling and running.

I have a car and a full driving licence so am mobile.

Note that i am happy to undergo a CRB check upon initialisation (at present the process can only be performed in conjunction with an employer).

Teaching Experience:

In the academic year 2005-06 i was given the opportunity to tutor GCSE Physics on a one-to-one basis to a friend's sister, by appointment of her mother. Holly, by her own admission, did not possess a particular aptitude nor interest for physics, yet both Holly and her mum were well aware of the importance of achieving grade A-C in GCSE science subjects, hence the need for tutoring. In the end, Holly achieved it! :) A reference is available from her mother Margaret.

In my final year of my undergraduate degree (2004-05) i opted to undertake a module that provided me with first hand experience of science education. I was required to visit Westminster School weekly for a term to help the A-level students out with their physics projects. The module gave me a lot of confidence as well as an appreciation for the importance of balancing my explanation & instruction against the students' need for their own space and time to realise things for themselves.

Tutoring Approach:

I resolutely believe in the importance of opening a person's mind to a subject by using everyday language and simple real-life analogies to start with (NOT throwing big words at them from the outset!), before gradually immersing them deeper into a subject. Learning is a multifaceted process and people need to experience a rich array of media - listening, reading, animation, problem-solving, discussing, etc. - before they can fully appreciate and understand a certain subject. I tutor in this spirit.

When it comes to helping people to pass exams, i like to find out exactly what the exam is likely to entail and prepare the student accordingly. I am even happy to contact teachers/lecturers to ensure an overall strategy that will compliment the student's learning at school, not complicate it.

Personal Description:
I am 29 years old and hold a Masters degree from Oxford University.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring on a one-to-one basis for over 5 years. I also sometimes teach small classes. I am happy teaching children, teenagers and adult learners.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching uses traditional methods and lively interaction. I expect the student to complete tasks between lessons. Without repetition and revision no-one can be expected to remember. Therefore, I am not afraid to go over the most basic elements until they are well known. Solid foundations are the basis for confidence.

Personal Description:
I am a recent Masters graduate in European Literature and Culture (specialised in Italian), with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Italian Studies. I learned Italian from scratch when I started university, and have since become fluent and lived in Italy for more than two years. As a result I can empathise fully with the difficulties of learning Italian from an English perspective. I have a real passion for learning and teaching language skills, and I am keen to pass on some techniques given to me by a very good teacher! As an arts/humanities student I enjoy helping people to get the most out of literature and critical thinking.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience as an English language assistant, and I have done private tutoring, for English and Italian, and mentoring young adults.

Tutoring Approach:

For Italian, I believe that formal grammar is essential, and that it can be fun to learn. The first step is to begin to understand how Italian is structurally different from English, and afterwards it becomes ever easier and more enjoyable.

For literature and philosophy, my approach is based mainly on a relaxed conversation, focused on a central issue or question relevant to the literature. I place a very important emphasis on summarising and clarifying the results and achievements of the conversation. It is important to be able to answer questions such as: do I agree with the author/character?; Why/why not?; How has my opinion changed?

Personal Description:
My name is Jennifer, I am a mature student who is currently undertaking a Masters Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I recently graduated from Reading University with a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and Ancient History. I have several years of experience working with children of several age groups, and am currently training to become a Secondary School teacher. I am dedicated and passionate about learning, I have excellent exam technique, and always achieve results.

Teaching Experience:

1.) One years experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a Catholic Primary school, where I was directly involved in Year 6 preparation for 11+ examinations. I also obtained 8 months experience working with children with Autism and learning difficulties.
2.) Two years experience in Secondary Education n the Langley area, in which I lectured A-Level Philosophy and taught Year 7-9 Religious Education. I also tutored several GCSE students during the Summer examination period.
3.) I have chaperoned educational trips abroad to Greece and the surrounding islands, with children studying Ancient History at GCSE and A-Level.
4.) I am also heavily involved in the Girl Guide association in both the UK and America, having undertaken a year in New York a Drama Director for a local Summer camp.

Tutoring Approach:

My typical approach with a new student, would be to have an initial one on one discussion about the subject they feel they need support in, what areas they are struggling in, and what parts of the subject they enjoy or dislike. This allows the student to take control over their own learning, in order to feel pride in their achievement of a good result in the end.

My style is to provide guidance and support in the areas which the student feels less confident in, whilst reinforcing the areas which they enjoy, or are perhaps more able in.
This allows for a well balanced, diverse and enjoyable teaching framework, for both the pupil and the student.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of St John's College, Cambridge (graduated with a 2:1 in History in 2007), currently studying for a Graduate Diploma in Law at the City Law School working towards becoming a barrister. I studied at Magdalen College School, Oxford, gaining 4 As at A Level and 11 GCSEs, 4 at A*, 7 at grade A.

I am required to be at university from 9am-6pm during the week, but would be available for weekday evenings for tutoring.

I have a wide breadth of knowledge of History, English Literature, Media and Philosophy, and am able to tutor in virtually any topic which may arise during the study of these subjects. I would be happy to tutor multiple subjects with the same student if required.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching tutorials in History, English, and Media Studies to students of various levels of ability and age, from students aged 11 working towards a 13+ entrance exam, to students studying for A Levels.

I have also had three summer's worth of teaching experience teaching international students English as a foreign language as part of STS Language Schools, tutoring classes of 15-20 students aged 12-18.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to encourage students, rather than lecturing them. I believe that student's own discoveries of the answers to problems they are dealing with are much more memorable and beneficial than simply being told what they must do. I try and teach at the pace the student requires, so that if they are able to grasp a great deal quickly, then I will move the progress of the tutorials along quickly, if they require more time to be spent on something they are having difficulty with then I will happily slow the pace until they have understood.

I am able to set homework or not depending on the requirements of the student, and am happy to mark any work done. I would also analyse in detail any work done for me with the student so they are aware of what elements of their work were well done, and which parts might need improvement.

I believe that the focus of the tutorials should be on the student and their needs, and so I would tailor the teaching style and the nature of the course depending on the particular needs of each student.

Personal Description:
I am an 19 year old girl studying a BA in Classics at the University of Oxford tutoring as a summer job. I'm very dedicated and friendly, and believe that I'm very much in touch with children and teenagers, and hence very suited to tutoring. I'm highly academically adept in both arts and sciences - achieving 5 A-grades at A-level in Classical Greek, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Critical Thinking, an A-grade at AS-level in Further Mathematics, and 13 A*-grades at GCSE. I'm very well qualified to teach what I offer, and confident that I really understand my subjects.

Teaching Experience:

Although I've never had any formal tutoring experience, I used to be a voluntary helper for GCSE Maths Classes when I was in Sixth Form, at Nonsuch High School for Girls, Cheam. This involved attending a GCSE class once a week, finding out which students were struggling and in what areas, explaining concepts they didn't understand, and guiding them through difficult questions.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a highly flexible approach to tutoring: after all, each child has a different attitude to learning, different needs, and different abilities. I am both very patient and very creative, thus I'm willing to persevere and try different methods of teaching to suit their needs. Most importantly, however, I believe that a tutor should always have a genuine enthusiasm for teaching, and a genuine interest in learning. This is exactly what I instinctively possess, and what I hope to pass on to others.

Personal Description:
I am a graduate student with particular affinity for the humanities in the broadest sense. Born and raised in the local area and the first in my family to sit 'A'-levels I have a particular and personal interest in raising the aspirations of sixth form students considering their academic options or doubting their abilities, as well as in the lifelong learning of students from diverse backgrounds.

I am particularly suited to tutoring A-Level students seeking an extra boost in their grades between AS and A2 via an intensive summer course, or those aspiring to Oxbridge, undergraduates seeking the one-to-one tuition offered by vanishingly few UK universities, or adult students of all kinds.

Teaching Experience:

Examiner & Seminar Convenor for Master of Studies in International Relations, Institute for Continuing Education & Department of International Relations, University of Cambridge, Academic Years 2008-2010. Involving small groups of full-time, part-time, professional and amateur students from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds.

Undergraduate Supervisor in the history of the United States, c. 1865-, University of Cambridge, Academic Years 2007-2009. Duties involved weekly, hour-long, one-to-one tutorials for students aged 18-19, based upon marked essay submitted 24hr in advance.

Guest Lecturer, Hinchinbrooke High School, Huntingdon, Autumn 2009 - multimedia-led presentations to sixth form students in the political uses of history in the rhetoric of the 2008 presidential elections in the United States.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is highly flexible and adaptive to the particular needs of students, but follows a number of general principles. Firstly, in most cases, tutoring will serve as a compliment to - rather than a substitute for - a primary learning environment that will ultimately accredit any qualifications. The aims are to sharpen skills of critical thinking and appreciation of methodology, but also to develop a deeper and more enthusiastic engagement with subject matter for its own sake, as well as teasing out broader implications than may otherwise be possible.

To this end, the student's own work, submitted in (24 hr) advance and returned with extensive written feedback, will act as the text for discussion, argument and the development of synoptic links to broader subject matter and the requirements of syllabi and, ultimately, examinations. Towards the end of each tailored, ad hoc course, exercises in examination conditions will be offered. Returning to difficult topics - and even the repetition of exercises - will be undertaken with little of the hesitation necessary in more structured environments. The aim is for plenty of disputatious fun in an environment where the student is not afraid to try difficult things, or take the time to do more than just 'get by', or to stop and seek more clarification and detail.

Personal Description:
Hello,
I'm a second year Bsc Creative Music Technology student at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
I am mother tongue in both English and Italian and also speak French, which I studied for eleven years. I grew up in Italy travelling frequently to England, France and Germany.
I studied Maths, Italian Literature, English Literature, French Literature, Philosophy, History, Physics, Art History and Latin at the Italian equivalent (Diploma di Stato) of A-Level standard and as music is not part of the Italian curriculum beyond age 13, I pursued my musical interests in my own time, following 11 different courses over a period of nine years.

Teaching Experience:

While in Italy, I had experience tutoring students aged 15-18 in English and French, as a foreign language, and taught guitar and drumming to kids aged 12-14.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is specific to the pupil and the pupil's needs, I can give a general overview of the subject for the casual learner or tackle in-depth analyses of specific elements for a student approaching an exam.
With regards to music, tuition can be theory or practice-based, although some elements of theory will be necessary even for practical sessions.

Personal Description:
I am at present studying for a Masters degree at the University of York in composition. I graduated from York with a first class music degree in 2008. I completed A levels as a mature student at night school, achieving AAB in History, Music and English literature. I also have grade 8 piano. I am an experienced composer, theatre sound designer and singer, and regularly perform with a number of ensembles at the University and in York. The University of York music degree has high academic standards, and has helped me to develop strong research and writing skills.

Teaching Experience:

I have run regular music workshops in York primary schools over the last few years. The most recent was a Javanese Gamelan workshop with local primary children at the University in March 2009. I have also taught piano to children in York and London.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe strongly that a very important quality in a teacher is the ability to communicate effectively. It is important to understand how significant the relationship between teacher and pupil is, and how strongly this effects the learning process. The most important thing is to listen to any individual pupil and understand what there particular needs and interests are, try to understand their individual way of learning. If a pupil is not learning and progressing, it is always the teacher's fault. It is not good enough just to blame the pupil - a teacher is paid to teach, to inspire the pupil to learn and to work, and if the pupil is not doing so, it is the teacher's failure in my opinion.

Personal Description:
I'm a qualified teacher who's taught students at a wide variety of levels. I have an unusual combination of qualifications, with degrees in both literature and mathematics, and am the author of a well-received book for A Level students entitled *Studying Poetry*. I also spent ten years outside teaching, writing computer software on City trading floors.

I'm intellectually excitable, a quality with which I hope to infect my students. Above all I aim to make my students autonomous learners with the ability to master their subject and an appreciation of why that's worth doing.

Teaching Experience:

I've taught English Literature and Philosophy at undergraduate degree level, and taught postgraduate students at the Cardiff School of Journalism. I'm currently teaching mathematics to students from entry level (ie numeracy skills) to A Level.

I'm also involved in running adult education courses privately and am passionate about lifelong learning. I usually take conventional students but I'm happy to discuss providing you with tuition even if you're not enrolled for a course of any kind.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies by subject and will also adapt to your personal needs and your own style of learning. I'm here to help you, not the other way around. This is what teachers call "student-centred learning".

In literature and philosophy I specialise in developing an awareness of cultural and historical context, including making connections with the arts (especially music, painting and architecture), events and ideas. Not only is this interesting in its own right, it's also a great help for essay-writing in exams. I also enjoy helping my students to make connections between their subjects, especially at A level, and find this can help to make sense of material that might at first seem unattractive.

In maths, on the other hand, the key is to begin with understanding: first understanding the point of a new idea, then understanding how it works. Only then should students proceed to learn methods and do exercises. Too often these steps are skipped in an effort to "get through the syllabus" and "teach to the test", leading to confusion and lack of confidence. This is something I can help you to put right, and working one-on-one is absolutely the best way to do that.

I can also help with exam performance and study methods, including advanced techniques for memorization, note-taking and speed reading.

Personal Description:
I am 33 years old and currently nearing the end of my studies for a PhD in French literature, at King's College in London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English for three years in France, including in the capacity of private tuition, mainly for English as a foreign language as well as at university. I taught professional adults in both group and individual sessions. At the University of Val de Marne (Paris 12) I taught English to first and second year undergraduates in the Sciences faculty.

Tutoring Approach:

I first ask students to outline what they consider their strengths and weaknesses to be and then to focus on building a consistent set of skills. I organise sessions by establishing a timetable and plan of study, which is not pressured and which allows for flexibility. I aim to provide a relaxed yet studious atmosphere. I try to teach in a way that is as much about building confidence as it is about achieving excellence.

Personal Description:
With university qualifications in Maths & Philosophy along with graduate qualifications in Law, I am passionate about enabling others to understand and enjoy these subjects.

Teaching Experience:

I recently completed a university scheme where I worked in a local secondary school helping to teach the children. I worked with a range of students from those who were keen and fascinated to those who just needed to pass the qualification. I enjoy helping others and finding new angles on the subjects. I have always enjoyed mentoring and helping others to find the best way of understanding the subject.

Tutoring Approach:

After finishing my degree and post-graduate qualifications, I decided to work in a local school on a student scheme for three weeks. Having particularly enjoyed teaching in smaller groups and 1-1, I am tutoring for a year before going back to university to obtain further qualifications.

My strengths are in mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, with extensive knowledge in law and philosophy. I am a humourous and patient person, well aware that there are many ways of looking at the same problem and solution and I am happy to find the one that is most comfortable for the individual.
