| Personal Description: I am 26 and at present I am a Director at the Adam Smith Institute, an influential Westminster think-tank. Last year, I finished an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and previous to this I studied History at University College London. I am hard working and determined to excel, skills that I will pass on to whoever I tutor. I know what it takes to succeed and will work beyond what is expected to enthuse this confidence in to those that I teach. |
Teaching Experience: While at LSE, I tutored another fellow student from Japan who had only a limited grasp of the English Language. I took this extremely seriously and he managed to pass the MSc from being in a position in which his professors were certain he would fail. Outside of academics I have spent a number of years teaching tennis to children and adults of varying skills and abilities. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to teaching is based on two fundamental premises. The first is that it is absolutely essential to find satisfaction in the learning process. This may not come through the actual material that needs to be learnt and it is up to the tutor to inspire in the student the confidence to succeed. As your tutor, I will lay down the learning structure that will cement this through detailed lesson plans. The second premise is that supervised practise testing is imperative. This needs to be followed by a thorough evaluation of the results, in order to understand where improvements need to be made, in both knowledge and approach. As your tutor I will be available outside of teaching time to answer questions by email and phone, there will be no extra cost for this service. |

| Personal Description: I am a nineteen year old student, living in the West Midlands, with strong values regarding education, I am very trustworthy and reliable, am always punctual and am very passionate about both learning and teaching. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently training to be a teacher at Newman University in Birmingham, where I am studying a degree in Initial Teacher Training with QTS and specialising in English. However, I have subject knowledge in all areas of the curriculum and have developed during my education a number of teaching methods, as well as developing my own style. At A Level I did English, Psychology, Philosophy, ICT and Spanish. I also work for St Johns the Evangelist church as a Sunday School teacher on Sundays. I have done multiple work placements at schools across the West Midlands tutoring. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that my approach to tutoring is very thorough and comprehensive, I have developed a number of different teaching methods and techniques that can be applied depending on the child, or group of children. In my eyes, education is an extremely important process and should be fun and engaging. In each hour that I teach I will follow a lesson plan that teaches the children a chosen topic(s) and teach them how to apply this knowledge in order for them to process information at a higher level. |

| Personal Description: I am currently a student at the London School of Economics, undertaking an MSc in International Relations. Previously, I was at Goldsmiths, University of London, where I received a First Class Honours degree in Politics - being one of only two in my class to receive this distinction. During this time I studied under many scholars who are at the top of their fields - such as Dr. Saul Newman, Professor Sanjay Seth, and former Liberal Democrat candidate Dr. Richard Grayson. Outside of academia, I have had an article published by Monitor Mid-East - a venture which seeks to link politically minded students from across the world in their work and research. My main areas of interests of study are the politics of the Middle East (specifically Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq), Structuralism and post-Structuralism, post-Colonialism, Marxism, Islam, the politics of Latin America and Security Studies. Beyond these areas, I have also studied many topics that are specific to current A-Level curricula across a wide range of subjects, such as the British political system and British history, French New Wave cinema, literature of the Romantic period, and Continental political systems (Italy and Germany). I am also willing to teach younger children basic mathematics, science and English literature and language. |
Teaching Experience: Whilst I do not have any teaching experience, I feel that a tutoring position would be the perfect opportunity for me to demonstrate the skills that I have gained throughout my academic career. Both before and during my university career, I have been expected to deliver presentations to my peers and tutors, and receive questions afterwards. I would have to be prepared to address questions from my Professors regarding my presentations, which would require a steady nerve and a careful understanding of what was being asked. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that my time within the education system has given me the tools to combine the informal, one-to-one environment of teaching with the hard-working ethos necessary to succeed at any subject. Students will be expected to work hard in all areas, but also identify those areas that they find particularly difficult, so that they may achieve a balance of learning new things and brushing up on the old. Learning techniques will vary from student to student, and across disciplines. There may be subjects which call for a more informal learning environment (such as Media and Film studies), and those which would benefit from more formal and conventional learning techniques, like Maths, Politics and History. Age, student profiles, language skills and academic achievement will all be taken into consideration when choosing the appropriate teaching method. |

| Personal Description: I read Classics at Magdalen College, Oxford, then taught English in Greece. Since then, I've been tutoring full-time in London. |
Teaching Experience: I taught English as a Foreign Language in Halkida, Greece from September 2007 to June 2008. This was mainly classroom teaching, but I also did some private tutoring, which I enjoyed very much. I've now been tutoring full-time for over a year in London, teaching a variety of subjects to students of all ages. |
Tutoring Approach: I've been told that I'm very friendly and approachable. I think tutoring works best in a relaxed environment, and I try to ascertain exactly what the student wants to get out of the lessons, and tailor them accordingly. |

| Personal Description: I have recently completed a PhD at King's College London and also have degrees from the universities of Oxford and Manchester. I have a strong academic background and my research touches on a variety of different subjects including literature, philosophy, theology and film. I have published a number of articles and am currently working on my first book. Prior to commencing my PhD, I worked in event management for four years which gave me the opportunity to travel extensively as well as an insight into business writing, marketing and administration. I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm and besides teaching and writing, my interests include running, capoeira, going to the cinema and theatre and cooking. |
Teaching Experience: I have two years experience teaching English language, literature, history and business writing and oral skills at the Universit de Paris Ouest in France. I have also taught French translation and philosophy at King's College London. I have tutored in both the UK and France. My students' ages range from 9-40. |
Tutoring Approach: My priority when tutoring is to provide students with the skills they need to express themselves confidently in both their oral and written work. My sessions are both fun and challenging since I push my students to think for themselves rather than simply giving them the answers they want. I put particular focus on dealing with any specific problems or worries the student may have about a particular subject. I can give tailor-made lessons on exam and writing technique as well as oral presentation. My students find me friendly and approachable - my biggest strength is perhaps my ability to explain difficult and complex subjects and ideas in interesting and exciting ways. |

| Personal Description: I am a fully qualified English teacher who has had to retire from full time classroom teaching due to ill health and disability. I am an extremely competent and professional teacher, and would like to continue with my vocation, teaching, to the best of my ability. To this extent I would like to offer my skills as a tutor for students up to, and including, A'Level. My students have achieved excellent results and I have also proved to be very talented at raising students results from those predicted to 1 to 3 levels higher. I have experience of working with students at all levels, from those who may struggle with the subject to those who need an extra challenge that they may feel they are not getting in the classroom. I am also experienced at teaching students with special educational needs, including Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Cerebal Palsy, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalcula, Deafness and visibility impairment, SPLD and many others. |
Teaching Experience: I have been an English Teacher for 3 years (4 including my training year). I was also a school ambassador and mentor during my degree and tutored to GCSE level while studying for my A'Levels. Over the course of the previous year I have tutored a variety of young people with a good deal of success: an A2 Level student achieved an A grade in English Literature, which guaranteed her place in her chosen university; a GCSE student who was predicted C grades achieved an A in English Literature and a B in English which has enabled her to continue her studies in 6th Form; also a Year 10 student has improved his coursework grade from a predicted C/D grade to an A/B grade. I am obviously very proud of my students results and feel they offer evidence of my skills as a tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is two fold. I feel it is very important for my students to be relaxed and enjoy the tuition they receive in order for them to retain the information they are learning and be able to use it in the future. On the other hand it is impotant to work very quickly and intensively when tutoring as the sessions pass very quickly and it is also important to cover a great deal of information in a short period of time. Therefore my tutoring sessions are relaxed yet intensive, fun whilst exhaustive. |

| Personal Description: I'm studying for a BA in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, but I'm currently taking a year out. I'm eager to do tutoring in the meantime, and am considering a career in teaching. I have an avid interest in the sciences, as well as in philosophy, and am therefore offering GCSE-level tuition in chemistry, physics and maths (at varying rates according to the extent of my qualifications). My experience of tutoring is fairly wide-ranging, and I have an excellent success rate in helping my students to achieve their desired grades. |
Teaching Experience: I've taught students of a variety of ages and abilities, from basic KS3 French, through GCSE (Higher) Science, to AS level Maths and A-level Philosophy. I think that this has provided me with a good understanding of the needs of different students, and has allowed me to tailor my teaching style to each individual. I also have experience of tutoring small groups of GCSE level pupils, and I taught GCSE Maths for six weeks at the Open Academy in Norwich. |
Tutoring Approach: I don't have a "set approach" to tutoring- I think it is of utmost importance to consider the individual requirements of the student. I therefore offer sessions of varying lengths according to the wishes of the students, and discuss the aims of their tuition in the first session. After the first lesson, I compile a rough plan of work for future sessions, in accordance with the information given by the student. I generally favour a personal approach- verbal discussion of issues/arguments (in Philosophy) and problems (in Sciences), rather than endlessly setting exercises. I do, however, have access to various resources, and use these to supplement discussion where appropriate. I often set a small amount of "homework" to consolidate the work we've done in a session, but this will be discussed with the student. I've had very positive feedback on my approach to tutoring, and I hope that all my students find me clear, friendly and helpful. |

| Personal Description: I have just finished studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, where I finished with a first, and am now studying for an MA at York. My main areas of interest are in philosophy, religious studies and development economics. Outside of studying, I'm a keen sportsman and especially enjoy rugby and football. |
Teaching Experience: While at sixth form, I was a volunteer mentor on a mentoring programme for young people. For those hoping to apply to Oxbridge, I am able to provide some feedback and advice about the application process. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring focuses on developing discussions rather than providing lectures on topics. I think the key to succeeding in any area of study is developing a passion for the topic in hand, and this is what I will hope to develop in tutees. |

Included two non-mandatory requested presentations. 2005-2009 Invitation to speak at several art festivals on Journalism. 2006-2009 Transcription in Lectures and facilitating one-to-one study and skills sessions. |
Tutoring Approach: Lesson plans are loaded with additional resources for student access after the lesson has ended, fostered by the enthusiasm for the construction of knowledge. I like to teach so that one might teach, that knowledge production be cyclical and generating. I like my lesson plans tight so as to deliver, while including opportunity for communicating with students to ensure an understanding has been gained that will go beyond the session. I have a kind and friendly manner and great experience as a facilitator. I am responsive to other people's experiential and learned knowledge and a hard, keen worker. Although, truth be told, my harmonica playing needs work. |

| Personal Description: I am currently experienced in Science, English and History predominantly, and am fluent in 3 languages, with a basic knowledge of some European languages. I have also been involved in setting up a Limited Company which aims to provide academic resources to students in Higher Education (at University level). |
Teaching Experience: I have 2 years experience, delivering 1-2-1 tuition to students ranging across KS1-4, and ages 6-16, teaching mostly Science to GCSE Level, Maths to KS3 and English + History + ICT to A Level. For those interested in Business Studies, or how to set up your own business, I can offer lessons on these topics as well, including topics on where to go to get your funding, and how to market yourself effectively (including networking) etc. Below is a more complete and comprehensive list of subjects which I am able to teach. This service is available to businesses as well, to form a part of your group training exercises. |
Tutoring Approach: I always aim to follow the National Curriculum, without making each lesson feel like more schoolwork. We can approach lessons in different ways. i.e. We can do mini-projects which incorporate a range of subjects to enhance your overall learning experience, while improving skills such as organisation, essay-writing, note-taking, observation etc. OR We can have set lessons focusing on topics mentioned by the student, that need improving. For example, analysis of a book/text in English, improving History knowledge etc. Generally the first hour for every student is where we develop a working plan that works for both parties, and so everyone knows what to expect. I am very laid back and flexible about things, so if there's ever a need to deviate from the plan, then that's not a problem. I'm also very open to questions. One-to-one tuition is all about being able to talk to your tutor and ask the questions you may not be able to in school. Therefore, lessons are always informal, and as long as we get our set work done, we can have a chat about anything else that may be concerning you in school/college/work or life! As a final note, after evaluating each students specific needs, we will agree on the number of hours we will work together, and what pattern they will follow. For example: Normally people opt for -2hrs per week Closer to exams you can have a series of intensive lessons - i.e. 2-3hrs per week all at once or spaced out over 3 days. Some people need a quick crash course to prepare them for an assessment, or to complete an assignment that they need help with. In these instances we can develop an intensive program ranging from 1 full day to Xhr(s) per day leading up to your deadline. I understand this may all seem very long-winded, but hopefully you can understand my working ethos and will want to enquire further to see what I can do for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon. |

| Personal Description: I am currently undertaking a funded MA in English Literature. English (and therefore reading and writing) is my primary discipline. I graduated last year with a First Class degree in English Literature. My ultimate objective is to teach and research at university level. I am a keen individual who values learning and particularly learning about the Arts and Humanities. I believe education is not simply a means to an end, but rather, education offers exciting and new ways of thinking about ourselves and the world around us. While my background may be English I have an extensive knowledge of history and philosophy having previously tutored both of these subjects up to 'A' level. One core skill that I have found is my tutoring encourages is abstract thought. This is a useful skill both in and out of the class/seminar room. |
Teaching Experience: For my age, my teaching experience is fairly extensive. I have taught both in this country and abroad. I am most used to individual tutoring assignments however; I recently lead a group course on "British Culture". This course was essentially a history of ideas in this country from the Roman invasion to the present. I have some experience of leading university seminars and am currently tutoring grammar for mature students before they start undergraduate study. At the other end of the spectrum, as an undergraduate I worked as a teaching assistant in a state primary and secondary school. |
Tutoring Approach: As I have mentioned, I do not view education as simply a means to an end. However, I realise that, at Key Stage 1,2, and 3 the emphasis needs to be on passing exams. At this level I aim to provide an entertaining and relaxed session which remains focused on providing and reinforcing the information required to pass an exam. I hesitate to say that my style is informal. I do believe that when instructing younger children a certain amount of structure is required. This does not mean that the session needs be myopic. Rather, that we focus on a structured approach to attaining goals in an interesting and fulfilling way. At the higher levels (or mature students) my approach is more relaxed: adults require less structure. This more laid-back technique is strong preparation for university study. |

| Personal Description: I am 29 years old and hold a Masters degree from Oxford University. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring on a one-to-one basis for over 5 years. I also sometimes teach small classes. I am happy teaching children, teenagers and adult learners. |
Tutoring Approach: My teaching uses traditional methods and lively interaction. I expect the student to complete tasks between lessons. Without repetition and revision no-one can be expected to remember. Therefore, I am not afraid to go over the most basic elements until they are well known. Solid foundations are the basis for confidence. |

| Personal Description: I teach Philosophy, Critical Thinking and English, including reading and writing skills. I teach part-time in a school and am also doing research in the Philosophy of Education at London University. I have written several coursebooks (published by OUP) and some poetry. I have an A Level Philosophy blog, which students can use for resources and as a forum for discussion with other students. I am an Examiner for A Level Philosophy (AQA). I live in Bristol (near the Downs) and am married, with two grown-up sons. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught in secondary schools for thirty years, and was for many years Head of the English Faculty in a comprehensive school. I have also taught Philosophy in Adult Education classes. I now work part-time (teaching Philosophy, Critical Thinking and English) whilst researching and doing some private tutoring. As an experienced sixth form tutor, I can offer advice on university applications. |
Tutoring Approach: I can accept work in both Bristol and Central London. (I am usually in London on Wednesdays.) I can also work via email and phone. I will start by establishing what the student already knows and understands. Understanding will be carefully monitored throughout. Help will be given with essay writing and exam technique. Essays and practice exam answers will be marked and annotated in detail, using the exam board mark schemes. Lessons will normally be informal and discussion-based rather than lectures, and will often be backed by a handout or on-line resource. I am an experienced, good-humoured, professional teacher. |

| Personal Description: I am about to start my first year, studying English, at Cambridge University. I extremely enjoy film and music, playing the guitar and trombone, and also theatre, having been in many plays at school, and last year taking up a piece I wrote to the Edinburgh Festival. |
Teaching Experience: I was part of a team at my previous school coached to mentor the kids about to start their GCSEs. Other than this I tutor my 14year old sister and several other kids from my local area. |
Tutoring Approach: Having just successfully been through the schooling system I feel that I have as good approach as any as to how to approach different subjects and which revision skills work best. Although study techniques differ between pupils, I believe I can help individuals find what works best for them. The best help for me was not only being taught how to tick the correct boxes for exams, but also ways of keeping the subject fresh and interesting, finding areas that kept my enthusiasm up. |

| Personal Description: I am a recent graduate from the University of London, and have studied Literature, History and the Italian language as parts of my degree. Additionally, I have developed a wide knowledge of philosophy, both in generally as part of my study, and in a specialized course on Art Philosophy in my final year. As a relatively young tutor I pride myself on my ability to engage with pupils, and enjoy working with individuals towards a strong personal goal. I believe that even compulsory education should be enjoyable, and that with a little nudge in the right direction, any pupil can discover a life-long passion for learning. |
Teaching Experience: As President of my University's Creative Writing Society, I was actively involved in giving constructive criticism and feedback to members. I believe that my personal approach helped to build their confidence and skills in equal measure. Both before and during my University career I have taken opportunities to do work experience at local schools, and to work with students of all ages. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that a solid essay writing style is the foundation to any academic subject, just as grammar underpins any language. This is especially vital to those pupils working towards a University place, but is in fact important in all walks of life. Solid writing and language skills open doors to interviews and careers just as much as they do to Halls of Residences. I work to ensure that these vital elements are interesting and exciting to pupils, while building on their knowledge of the subject material. Many pupils are surprised to realize just how much they know about a subject, and this realization can provide a real boost to their confidence. This confidence is the key to the fantastic results I want to inspire my students to achieve. I also offer Proofreading for essays and Personal Statements, and a Mock Exam Sitting Service. |

| Personal Description: I graduated from Warwick University with a 2:1 join honours BA in Philosophy and Literature. Both subjects have been a passion of mine for a long time. I received an A* in both subjects at GCSE and A at A/AS level. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored GCSE and A/AS level English and Philosophy whilst studying at Warwick to students from the local grammar school. |
Tutoring Approach: I encourage my pupils to be analytical in thought and essay style. I find that working through essay questions/practise test papers is the best way to prepare for exams. I am keen to ascertain the pupils learning style and to let this inform the method I use to tutor. I am a good source of knowledge in both philosophy and literature and find that I have has a lot of success in conveying complex ideas in the most simple way possible then building from that. I have found that the overlap of both subjects leads to higher than average marks, and I am keen to impart this on my pupils. |
