Personal Description:
My names Will, I am a young student aged 18. My passion is music, and it is what I study and perusing as a career. I've been a percussionist since about the age of 8 and started playing the kit when I was about 10/11. I've always taken the drums very seriously, and new from a young age it was in this instrument that my talents lay, and also music in general, as I am also a pianist and composer. My main, preferred style of drumming is jazz. Jazz fusion being the strongest sub-genre. I also play for a big band, and a couple of outfits playing rock and funk. I can teach almost any genre apart from maybe heavy metal, as I never took much interest in that, and don't use a double pedal! My main influences out of many I would say are Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, John Bonham, Jojo Mayer and Buddy Rich...

I am also a keen artist, and have studied many avenues of art over my time practicing the subject. After music, it is my biggest interest, and I have been doing it all my life. My area of focus is fine art, but I have plenty of knowledge in other areas. Recently I had an oil painting exhibited in the Royal Albert Hall for the remembrance day.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught 5 pupils in my time as a tutor so far. With the age range starting at about 8 up to 40 odd. I have also taken a group percussion class at my old school this year, and I'm about to start teaching a fellow student of mine in the upcoming weeks.

I have no formal teaching experience as yet for art, but I have always been asked and offered help at school from colleagues and sometimes even teachers.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching the drums, is to build a strong technical approach through consistent and extended study of the different aspects of drumming and genres they can be used in. I make sure time is taken to master certain elements of drumming technique, but also try to make the lessons as enjoyable as possible, by having an extended library of music to play along to, and also by trying to get the student to explore their own creative ideas, and help find their own voice on the instrument.

My approach to teaching art will be similar to how I teach the drums. I will aim to teach the student all the fundamental techniques I know, experiment with a wide range of media, and help them achieve what I call 'flare,' which some people regard as only being a natural talent, but I think you can find it in almost everyone, If they haven't already found it themselves.

My interest in music began at primary school. I took instrumental lessons in flute and vocal tuition at the early age of 7 and piano aged 10. After quickly becoming involved in choirs, orchestras and solo performances I managed to achieve two music scholarships into two Independent schools.

Currently aged 21, I am a recent Music graduate from Bath Spa University. My studies included Opera, Singing, Composition, Performance, Musicology and Community Music. I have covered an extensive variety of repertoire, on all instruments, and performed on a number of occasions. Performances have taken place at St. Peters Basilica, The Pantheon, St. Peters Square, Bath Abbey, Wells Cathedral, Corsham Court, St Michaels Without, Worcester Cathedral, Bath Assembly Rooms and low key events such as termly school concerts and voluntary performances to the elderly.

Alongside teaching, I am interested in providing music-making workshops to local schools. I am also in discussion with the Worcestershire communities, to provide singing sessions for the elderly. Singing provides great enjoyment to many people, and working with community choirs is another factor of teaching I am interested in, as choral music is another great passion of mine. I enjoy composing new music and was honoured with having a recent Christmas composition performed in Bath Abbey's carol service.

My approach to tutoring is a traditional one, particularly when it comes to the teaching of Latin and Greek, which is taught by composition into the language from English and through the reading of original texts.

I ask for a tutee to try their hardest - as long as they do, they will be met with a tutor who will give their all in order to help them achieve their goal, a tutor dedicated to his teaching and his pupil.

I also incorporate modern methods into my teaching, including the use of ICT and the latest examples of Digital Humanities e.g. The Perseus Project.
