Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to teach the concepts clearly. Once the student has
the fundamental concepts straight then academic attainment follows naturally.

Many pupils struggle with maths and physics because of poor explanations
of the concepts involved. Schools often rely on rote memorisation and cramming, as
alternative to understanding. My approach is to explain the derivation of
material. A successful technique is to work through the pupil's choice of homework
or revision problem exercises or past exam papers, showing how each exercise can
be solved. This way the tutoring is targeted at exactly those areas that require
help and is also most directly relevant to achieving exam success.

I graduated with a first class undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Nottingham in June 2012. As a recent student myself, I have used many different learning styles whilst studying for my own examinations. I also plan and conduct reviews with parents/students frequently and incorporate the findings into the tutoring plan.

I have always had an interest in teaching maths, as far back as my own GCSE's i helped most of my friends with their coursework and I've continued in that vein my whole life. Now i have Graduated with my Masters degree (Hons) I have gone straight back into what I've always enjoyed doing. I have been teaching in some form for many years. I was a peer tutor at university and I casually tutored privately through a lot of my degree to subsidise my studies. I have Professionally tutored for a year now and look forward to a great deal more.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach my tutoring with an open mind and I encourage input from the student, the downfall of the teaching system is its impersonal nature and the students trepidation to come forward after an initial misunderstanding. I am very patient and am willing to go over a topic as many times as necessary and i like my students to feel comfortable enough to ask me the same question a hundred times if its required. I favour a Socratic method of teaching in which i encourage students to ask questions and i manipulate the learning process to create such opportunities as information is more readily accepted and retained in this way.

I relocated to Scarborough in 2011 having lived in Norton/Malton for one year and Nottingham for three. I'm 29 years old. I currently teach Science to students up to the age of 16 in Scarborough. I studied Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle, graduating 8 years ago and going on to to complete a PGCE in Science (Biology) at Nottingham Trent University.

Just finished 3rd Year at Oxford University studying Engineering Science in which I achieved a First. Competitive Swimmer, British Record Holder, British Champion, took 2 years out of university to train full time in the lead up to London 2012 Olympics. At A-level I studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Latin, achieving A grade in all of them and achieved 9 A* grades at GCSE. I would describe myself as a very relaxed, friendly and approachable person and am extremely patient.

Teaching Experience:

I have a dyslexic younger brother who I tutored a lot for GCSE maths and science. I have also tutored a girl for GCSE, AS and A-Level maths and another boy for AS and A-Level Physics and another boy for AS and A-Level physics. Also at school I helped explain various concepts to fellow students.

Tutoring Approach:

It would work best if the tutee contacted me in advance, outlining where they're having trouble and what they'd like to go over. Then in the tutorials it is best if we work from the tutee's book but I have many I could bring along if they don't have one, and, from my experience, the best method of revising is practice, so after I have explained the concept we will work though some problems together until they have a firm understanding of what's going on.

My name is Julia and I am 22 years old. I have just finished the third year of my MSci Astrophysics degree at University College London, but am moving home over the summer break from university so I am looking to tutor in Birmingham until late September.

I completed 5 A-Levels (Maths, French, Physics, Chemistry and General Studies) at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls in Birmingham, receiving 3 A grades (Physics, French, General Studies) and 2 B grades (Maths, Chemistry). I have a keen interest in the languages as well as the sciences, and at GCSE received 9 A* grades and 4 A grades, so am able to teach a very wide spectrum of subjects confidently. Personal Description:
I am currently reading Classics at the University of Liverpool and live in West Kirby. My tutoring experience has been built upon earlier experience of classroom and individual teaching in Schools (both Primary and Secondary), which I have now returned to alongside tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

September 2013 to present: teaching a GCSE Classical Greek course.
July 2013 to present: tutoring English, Maths and Latin.
September 2011 to June 2012: taught an introductory Latin Course at a local Primary School.
September 2010 to July 2012: taught an introductory Classical Greek course & mentored several students in Latin.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths: As teaching in schools is very often rushed and group-focused, many students are left with gaps in their knowledge, so by covering the theory behind certain methods and explaining problems in a simple way, I try to remedy this. 'Practice makes perfect' is especially true for this subject and so, for the GCSE student, I spend a large part of the lesson focusing on past papers and put the theory to practice.

English: As well as ensuring that the student knows the set poetry & prose for their exam, I like to introduce reading of something new at the start of each lesson, in preparation for the unseen section of the exam. I believe this is also important, as it helps the student to appreciate areas of the literary canon outside of their exam, and at the same time to develop a 'feel' for the discussion of noteworthy elements in a text. In terms of English Language, points of rhetoric and oratory are discussed and practised in exercises of composing speeches, articles, etc. as will be found in their exam. For the advanced student, intertextual links between their set texts are discussed and a lot of time is spent in oral essay-practice.

Latin & Greek: I have found that the best way of getting to grips with the language is through reading, so I let the student read the sentence out in Latin/Greek, then systematically work through, picking out the words in the order that they should be translated. By following this method, it allows for the practical discussion of grammatical constructions and vocabulary, which are much more rapidly absorbed through reading instead of learning tables of words. The aim of this method is for students to be able to read a text at the required level with reasonable fluency and to develop their confidence in translating unfamiliar words and phrases.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a Mathematics teacher since 2001 and have been a Head of Department for Mathematics, a Learning Zone Coordinator for Mathematics and ICT and also a Mathematics Consultant for a local City Council.

I have experience of working with both Primary and Secondary School children but my career as a teacher has been mainly in Secondary Schools.

I have also taught English at lower GCSE level (up to grade C).

Tutoring Approach:

I am very kind, sympathetic and non judgemental in my approach to tutoring and work very hard to make sure that all my students feel confident when working with me - it is vitally important that students do not feel embarrassed when making a mistake as this prevents them from learning.

I fully encourage and help to develop each student's confidence in mathematical discussions which allows them to think through mathematical problems when they are doing school work or taking an examination.

All of my previous GCSE students have achieved A* to C grades.

Personal Description:
I am an Undergraduate studying Medicine at Imperial College London.

I am extremely passionate in the Sciences and Mathematics (ever since I was a child, as weird as that sounds.) and I've always enjoyed helping my peers and juniors improve and excel in these subjects.
