I'm an extremely strong mathematician, scoring top grades through school (including scoring 300/300 in my AS Level Further Maths), and went on to a heavily maths-based degree in Civil Engineering with Management. I'm a GCSE Maths Examiner, so I know exactly what is required to get your target grade.

Aside from teaching Maths, I've had a wide range of experiences - I've helped set up an community project in my friend's village in Tanzania and have taught some of our sponsored students out there. I also work as an actor, and am filling the gaps with supply teaching and private tutoring.

I've recently moved to Watford in summer 2014, so I have lots of gaps to fill with tutoring sessions.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm keen to help pupils understand how maths works, and not simply learn a standard set of instructions to follow to reach the "right" answer.

With the new changes coming to Maths GCSE, having a good understanding is more important than ever - students simply cannot get by on rote-learning the method alone any more. Students need to be able to explain their answer clearly, and I make sure I incorporate this into my lessons.

Of course, approach will vary substantially depending on the student.

Students who are very close to their exams will need more focus on how to get the best result.

With younger students there will be more opportunity to focus on their understanding, and exploring how Maths works. I try to avoid simply teaching "How To Get The Right Answer To This Particular Type Of Exam Question", which might get them through tests in the short term, but is rather less helpful to them in the long term.

As a tutor I'd be choosing the most appropriate approach for the student.

Although I specialise in Maths, I am more than comfortable with science, and can also help students up to secondary school level in this subject. I will also do English with Maths at primary level.

when teaching children on a one to one basis, I usually start by giving them a general assessment on their reading and problem solving skills. After this I am able to plan for each child on an individual basis on how to help them improve their levels and fill gaps in their learning. Sometimes children come to my home but most times I tend to teach children in their own homes. I normally teach the children for an hour and then give them homework for further skill practice. I also help children and parents draw up a reading and learning timetable which is very easy to follow, this has proven to be very effective in the past, in helping children become independent learners. Personal Description:
I am currently reading Classics at the University of Liverpool and live in West Kirby. My tutoring experience has been built upon earlier experience of classroom and individual teaching in Schools (both Primary and Secondary), which I have now returned to alongside tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths: As teaching in schools is very often rushed and group-focused, many students are left with gaps in their knowledge, so by covering the theory behind certain methods and explaining problems in a simple way, I try to remedy this. 'Practice makes perfect' is especially true for this subject and so, for the GCSE student, I spend a large part of the lesson focusing on past papers and put the theory to practice.

English: As well as ensuring that the student knows the set poetry & prose for their exam, I like to introduce reading of something new at the start of each lesson, in preparation for the unseen section of the exam. I believe this is also important, as it helps the student to appreciate areas of the literary canon outside of their exam, and at the same time to develop a 'feel' for the discussion of noteworthy elements in a text. In terms of English Language, points of rhetoric and oratory are discussed and practised in exercises of composing speeches, articles, etc. as will be found in their exam. For the advanced student, intertextual links between their set texts are discussed and a lot of time is spent in oral essay-practice.

Latin & Greek: I have found that the best way of getting to grips with the language is through reading, so I let the student read the sentence out in Latin/Greek, then systematically work through, picking out the words in the order that they should be translated. By following this method, it allows for the practical discussion of grammatical constructions and vocabulary, which are much more rapidly absorbed through reading instead of learning tables of words. The aim of this method is for students to be able to read a text at the required level with reasonable fluency and to develop their confidence in translating unfamiliar words and phrases.

Since last year I have also been tutoring for IGCSE and IB Mathematics.

Tutoring Approach:

I always seek to combine a solid grounding of the subject matter at hand with the needs and skill set of the individual. My philosophy is to take this combination and convert it into a student whose mindset becomes independent and robust so they can think for themselves using real world examples wherever possible for relevance. The starting point is always topics students are comfortable with moving gradually towards more complex areas as their mindset and confidence builds.

For me this approach is key and once they're grounded in the basics and well equipped with a relevant skill set, only then do we move on to applying that to an exam format and past papers. This serves to further purify, solidify and perfect the students' understanding and technique. I also give a lot of emphasis to some of the less obvious but vital skills such as mathematical definitions, analysis and the direct link between Algebra and Geometry. Where appropriate, I set and mark work, giving students' detailed feedback to further facilitate their improvement.

Ultimately, I love Mathematics and to infect others with this love is the most rewarding part of my job.
