Personal Description:
I am in my penultimate year at Hull University Business School reading Management and Accounting. I am, however, from Hull and have my own transport.

I am a very friendly and approachable 22 year old, who is always professional and genuinely enjoys teaching!

My main passions in life are design, the outdoors and the arts.

Teaching Experience:

After graduating from Hymers College in 2010, I have undertaken a number of students of all ages, mainly specifying in Maths and science. My area mainly lies in GCSE maths and confidence building.

Tutoring Approach:

Education is very important to me, and I see having confidence in learning as being a vital part of life, and such take a fun and proactive approach to tutoring.

I am naturally very organised, and so will provide all the equipment needed, exam questions, books, etc

Personal Description:
I'm a 28 year old aerospace engineer working for Rolls-Royce with a real passion for teaching. All my life I have loved helping others to learn (my little sister can vouch for that!), and maths was always my favourite class at school. I have a ridiculous amount of enthusiasm for the subject and love passing it on and infecting other with the love of maths (my friends, however, think I'm mad!). I think the thing I love most about teaching is the realisation; the point when the 'penny drops' and the student gets a thrill out of learning. This is why I love tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I've had quite a broad range of teaching experience - firstly, I am a semi-professional salsa dancing choreographer, performer and instructor. A little different from classroom mathematics, yes, but the teaching principles of patience and encouragement are the same in all fields.

I started tutoring when I was at university and a friend asked if I would help one of her year-11 friends with her maths, and I was happy to oblige. This experience made me realise that I not only did I really enjoy it, I was actually quite good at it. She took her maths GCSE and came out with an A grade - her expected grade 6 months earlier was a C.
This experience lead on to me tutoring a year 9 boy for a year. His mediocre grades were pulled up to level 7 - entry level for higher exam papers.

That was 6 years ago and since then I have tutored many students, usually about 3 per year for various periods. My level of expertise ranges from year 9 all the way up to year 13 in maths, and up to year 11 in physics. Although I LOVE physics, I wouldn't be comfortable teaching A-level - with one exception - Nuclear & Particle physics. This was always my speciality - so if you have a niche need, I would love to help!

Tutoring Approach:

I adore the subject matter. My students have told me that my enthusiasm not only comes across when I teach, it actually rubs off on them. I aim to make my students LOVE their subject!

I feel that the best way to encourage a maths or physics student is for them to feel that they are really achieving something. Firstly allow them to explore the problem and see if they can work it out for themselves, then drip-feed them the/a method so they don't feel like they are being spoon-fed. Extrinsic goals (doing it for someone else) are nowhere near as powerful as intrinsic goals (doing it because you want to) - my aim is to make the student find maths/physics - dare I say - fun(!). Once the student realises implications of what they are doing, and how important this esoteric language is to the world it really opens their eyes and makes them realise this is part of a thing much bigger than the problem in front of them.

Another quality that is absolutely paramount in a tutor is patience. Sometimes students just don't "get it". It's times like these that a tutor's mettle is really tested. I have learnt that a good technique is firstly to repeat what you have explained, as if it's the first time, and then repeat it again, but from another angle. Alternatively, moving on to something else and coming back to the problem helps some students. The important factor is to remain patient and relaxed at all times. Be on their side. If you get frustrated then the student gets frustrated, and then you've failed as a tutor.

I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. Tutoring Approach:

Naturally, what I do in tutorials depends on the tutee. The ability to adapt a lesson to the needs of the individual is one advantage tuition has over classroom teaching. When I meet a new student I try to assess what difficulties there are, and provide some sort of solution. Personal Description:
From an early age I have been extremely enthusiastic about mathematics and since leaving education, and before I chose to pursue a career in education, I have been fascinated by learning and problem solving. I am currently a teacher in a new school in Hackney, East London. The college is for 14-18 year olds so I specialise in GCSE and A-Level maths teaching. I believe the key to learning is presenting a new topic in a way that the learner can engage with best. I would aim to break a complex problem down into smaller more manageable parts. Maths is a subject where each new concept is just a collection of previously learnt skills or techniques used in a specific way. I would visit the house of the tutee under the supervision of a parent. Also, if acceptable, I would try to involve a parent in the tuition process so that they can work with the tutee at a later date, if they thought it would help. I am happy to set additional work to be finished between tuition sessions, if the parent and tutee consent to this. I aim to not only help the tutee in acquiring the grade they want but also to improve their confidence in maths and help inspire them to enjoy the subject more.

Approach to tutoring:

I'm a 23-year-old graduate of the University of Cambridge, having recently completed my studies and earning a First-Class Honours degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) with a Merit at the Masters course in Mathematics. Currently in my final year at KCL studying Maths. I tutor pupils of ages 11+ and of all abilities with a flexible timetable.

Teaching Experience:

I've had nearly 3 years experience both privately and under ACE Academy. Since I only took my exams recently, I have a first hand knowledge as to what is expected from pupils and I am fluent on the syllabus. I tend to see results after a few months tuition. Once pupils have the right attitude and confidence they often exceed their expectations.

Best achievement: One of my KS3 pupils started at the bottom of the class with a poor attitude to maths, after a few months they managed to earn their way to the top and now they're even predicted an A for Maths GCSE (from D previously).

Style:
Perfectionist. If there is a difficult problem I will break it up into bits so it is easier to understand. I like to build things from first principles so it gives them a purpose as to why they are doing it.

Structure:

Discipline:

I have found that the most efficient use of a tutoring session is for me to first outline the theory of what we are going to study in that session to the student, and then use the remainder of the time to work through questions with the student as they become progressively more comfortable with the content until, ultimately, they feel able to answer the questions alone.
